Surfcoast Wildlife Rescue founder Jason Cichocki talks about a virtual fencing trial being run in Anglesea. The trial, currently in its third and final year, has seen great success in reducing the number of animals hit and killed along a stretch of road which had previously seen up to 250 kangaroos and wallabies hit per year. 00:00Well this stretch of virtual fencing is the longest stretch of virtual fencing in Australia.
00:05It's 12.4 kilometres where most of the other trial areas are around about the five kilometre mark.
00:11But yeah we've got the longest section of virtual fencing in Australia by far and we found that
00:21we were regularly receiving upwards of 200 to 250 kangaroos per year hit and killed on this one
00:2712.4 kilometre stretch. Since the installation of virtual fencing we're now seeing almost a 90%
00:37reduction in the second year showed us down to 28 so we went from 200 to 250 down to 28 in one
00:44in one year so you know it's working really well.
