00:00Hi, I'm Tembi Banks, director of the movie Young While Free, premiering at the 2023 Sundance
00:14Film Festival.
00:15So growing up, I was a huge John Hughes fan.
00:18I loved his films, but none of those centered black people.
00:22And so I realized that once I became a filmmaker, I wanted to change that.
00:26I wanted to make a film that I would have wanted to see when I was growing up.
00:30And so Young While Free is very much in that vein.
00:32It is a coming-of-age story where you have these two beautiful black kids, and they're
00:38discussing life, and they're making mistakes, and they're figuring things out.
00:42But they're also just having so much fun.
00:45And you have the beautiful backdrop of South L.A., and then all of L.A., really.
00:50And it's their world to explore.
00:52And we go on this journey with them, and we realize that black kids can, too, dream
00:58and have fun, and just kind of take the world by storm.
01:02So the journey of making this film is a unique one.
01:05We actually started filming in March of 2020.
01:09And so we shot for one day, and then the next day when we arrived to set, we found out that
01:13the whole world was shutting down.
01:15And so that was quite devastating, and we knew that we were going to have to figure
01:20out how we were going to get back up and going.
01:23But two years later, we were able to come together and finish what we started out to do.
01:28I can't wait to share this film with you guys.
01:30Thank you so much.
01:31I hope you enjoy it.
01:34Okay.
01:35How was that?
01:36Was that giving Young While Free, or was it giving Old, Sleepy, and Stale?
01:42Ooh, a little of both.
01:44All right.
