00:00And to give us additional information regarding the Friato-Magmatic eruption in Bulcang Taal,
00:06we will talk on the phone with VIVO's Director, Dr. Teresito Bacolgol.
00:12Good evening, Director. This is Dominic Alvelor of PTV Ulatbayan Weekend.
00:19Good evening to you, sir.
00:21Director, this is the Friato-Magmatic eruption that happened this morning in Bulcang Taal.
00:26What is the explanation as to why this happened again, Director?
00:31Okay, so the Friato-Magnetic eruption happened when magma comes into contact with water.
00:37So as a result, there was an explosive event that would produce a mix of steam,
00:43ash, and fragmented volcanic material due to rapid steam expansion.
00:48This is not the first or second time that the Friato-Magnetic eruption occurred in Taal
00:53after it erupted in 2020.
00:56This Friato-Magnetic eruption happened in July 2021 and in March, September, and October 2022.
01:06Director, what is the difference between this Friato-Magnetic eruption and the frequent Friato-Magnetic eruptions in Bulcang Taal, Director?
01:15Okay, so the Friato-Magnetic eruptions are steam-driven explosions
01:20that happen when water comes into contact with hot volcanic gases or hot volcanic rock.
01:26There is no magma involved in the Friato-Magnetic eruption.
01:28Now, in the Friato-Magnetic eruption, there is an interaction with magma and water.
01:36That's the reason why we have explosive steam-driven blasts
01:40like what happened on October 2 and this morning.
01:45Director, based on your advisory, it was only a minor Friato-Magnetic eruption.
01:50What were the parameters that you observed? Why was it only a minor eruption, Director?
01:57Okay, so the plume height that we observed was only 2 kilometers.
02:02And the eruption was not sustained. It was only 4 minutes.
02:06That's why we call it a minor Friato-Magnetic eruption.
02:11Director, in the event that a major Friato-Magnetic eruption happens,
02:15what are the signs or parameters that indicate that it is possible, Director?
02:22Okay, so a major Friato-Magnetic eruption can happen anytime, even without warning.
02:28But sometimes, there are signs that we observe when there are more eruptions,
02:33like when there are more eruptions,
02:37it means that there is a new magma or mafia,
02:40or there is a rise in the volume around the volcano,
02:44or there is an increase in the sulfur dioxide emission,
02:47or the frequent occurrence of Friato-Magnetic eruptions,
02:50these are signs that there can be a major Friato-Magnetic or even Magnetic eruption.
02:57Director, on October 2, there was also a minor Friato-Magnetic eruption.
03:03Is this a sign that the alert level of Taal Volcano should be raised, Director?
03:08For now, let's maintain the alert level 1. We will assess this on a daily basis.
03:14On September-October 2022, there were also frequent Friato-Magnetic eruptions,
03:19but we did not raise the alert level.
03:21So again, we will maintain the alert level 1 for now,
03:25and we will assess this on a day-to-day basis.
03:30Director, even if it's just a minor eruption,
03:33and the alert level 1 of Taal Volcano is still high,
03:37there was also a sign of a sudden eruption, Director.
03:40What are our countrymen who live around Taal Volcano, Director?
03:46Again, that's right. Anytime, there can be a Friatic or even Friato-Magnetic eruption.
03:51So again, we remind our countrymen who live around Taal Volcano,
03:56do not go to Taal Volcano Island
04:00to avoid a possible Friatic or even Friato-Magnetic eruption.
04:05Director, how dangerous is the risk of a Friatic eruption
04:12that can be detected if there is a sudden violent eruption in Taal Volcano, Director?
04:19Friatic eruptions are dangerous.
04:22If a person is inhaled, it can be difficult for them to breathe,
04:25there can be irritation in the lungs,
04:27it can also irritate the eyes,
04:29and if there are hiccups or other respiratory problems,
04:32it can also aggravate the symptoms.
04:36Director, what are the updates on the condition of Kanlaon Volcano, Director?
04:41Kanlaon Volcano is currently at alert level 2.
04:44Right now, and for the past 12 hours,
04:46we have recorded a number of volcanic earthquakes.
04:50Yesterday, we recorded sulfur dioxide that reached 2,606 tons per day.
04:57But this is not very high,
05:00the sulfur dioxide emission, if we compare this with the readings that we had from previous days,
05:06on September 11, we recorded almost 11,000 tons per day of sulfur dioxide.
05:13Lastly, Director, what are the latest news and reminders to our countrymen
05:18who live near and around the volcano, Director?
05:22Again, we call on our countrymen who live around active volcanoes
05:29to be vigilant and follow the announcements of the LGUs and our office.
05:35Let us not enter the so-called permanent danger zone.
05:43All right. Thank you very much, VIVO's Director, Dr. Teresito Bacolgol.
