00:00:08Man, this is it feels like it's been a couple years in the making but like honestly, it's been
00:00:13Well over a decade. I mean once Gonzaga rose to prominence there were
00:00:18people saying like they need to leave the WCC and join the Pac-12 because they're too good for the WCC now the rest of the
00:00:24WCC kind of up their game and it made it a
00:00:27More competitive conference with Gonzaga, but this is something that
00:00:31Has been in the works for a while in the sense that like it's it's been an obvious arrangement
00:00:37And then the conference realignment started happening. Everybody's like well surely Gonzaga's gonna go to the Pac-12 then the Pac-12 dies
00:00:44And then it comes back from the dead and then Brett McMurphy says Gonzaga to the Pac-12
00:00:48Everyone says shut the fuck up Brett. Shut the fuck up. You don't know what you're talking about
00:00:52And Brett's like I don't know man
00:00:53I think I might and even the Gonzaga athletic director was like Brett McMurphy's a dumb bitch doesn't know what he's talking about
00:00:59And I'll be damned Gonzaga to the Pac-12 was right after all so uh as we often do on this show
00:01:04I don't know. I'll say I don't like it, but I guess we do it every single show
00:01:09So I must like it enough to do it every show
00:01:12We're probably gonna talk a little conference realignment and also about the scoop wars
00:01:17Around the conference realignment because I Gonzaga the Pac-12 is a big deal
00:01:20It is it's a huge deal and certainly in the basketball world and I think anybody that's paying attention to what the Pac-12 is
00:01:26doing realizes that
00:01:28They're not done yet. They can't be done yet. They need one more football program at least but
00:01:33You know Memphis is back on the menu
00:01:35I think and and UConn is is always there even though that makes no geographical sense
00:01:39But you know we're all trying to figure out what UConn is thinking so Gonzaga the Pac-12 is certainly the story of college basketball
00:01:46This week story the NBA since we last did a show Carl Anthony Towns traded to the Knicks and a bit of a surprise
00:01:53Certainly surprised me and it seemed to surprise him
00:01:55He seemed shocked by it all Carl Towns was drafted to the Timberwolves obviously has
00:01:59Been a pivotal part of the the T Wolves rise to I think prominence counts
00:02:05I think the Timberwolves are certainly an awesome team. They're they're waiting to get over the proverbial hump
00:02:11But it's a franchise that frankly hasn't had a ton of great things go their way and in the last few years they have and
00:02:17They haven't won a title yet, and they haven't made the finals yet
00:02:20But uh they're they're knocking on that door and at a moment when it feels like they might be a candidate to run it back
00:02:25And and try again with this core that they have they they send
00:02:28I know Anthony Edwards is the franchise player, but they send the guy who's the former franchise player
00:02:34I guess the guy who was supposed to be the franchise player. They send him to New York
00:02:37They break up the Villanova Knicks Dante DiVincenzo to Minnesota Julius Randall also to Minnesota Katie Bates
00:02:42DFR guy the Buckeye also going back to Minnesota where he started his career, I believe
00:02:47That was the massive trade in the NBA talk about that a little bit. Maybe a little NBA media days as well
00:02:52I'm fired up for the NBA this year. I think the the the offseason or the summer I should say with the Olympics

00:04:51Gonzaga is going to join the Pac-12 and this was we had about one hour
00:04:55Maybe less than that probably 30 minutes of like, holy shit
00:04:59And everybody group chats are popping off everybody sending the link like oh my god, this is happening
00:05:03But quickly every other blue check
00:05:05Comes running to the opposition and says that's just simply not happening. It's not the Gonzaga athletic director
00:05:13I believe came out and said
00:05:15That's wrong. That's not we're not doing that every every
00:05:18The Pac-12 themselves said that's wrong. Everybody that could say that was wrong said that is just not true
00:05:23It's not true at all. And then a week later. It was true
00:05:26And then even when the athletic director was asked about it
00:05:28they said that Brett McMurphy still had it wrong and
00:05:32That he if he knew that they were going to the Pac-12
00:05:35He knew things that the athletic director didn't even know and that he must be Nostradamus to know that this was happening

00:09:02Are you excited? I am I am excited. I think this is this is a great move for both parties
00:09:07We've kind of exhausted to death the point about the Pac-12 trying to survive as a basketball league and all that
00:09:13But you know, the the West Coast Conference is good. I think the West Coast Conference is a mid-major
00:09:18Basketball conference had
00:09:20Like I said earlier like I think Gonzaga was so dominant that that we were hoping Gonzaga either leaves or the conference rises up
00:09:27I think in the end both are gonna happen
00:09:29Like I do think the league like really elevated itself because of Gonzaga
00:09:33And and they pulled the rest of the league up and it turned into a really compelling league where there got it got to a
00:09:39Point where like Gonzaga did still feel dominant and felt like they were very obviously the top dog even the rare rare occasions when st
00:09:46Mary's would beat them
00:09:48Both like in a head-to-head game, but also like in the for the conference championship
00:09:53BYU was in that conference. They would beat him every saw it like there were
00:09:57Even when they were the top dog they would still
00:10:00it was still compelling enough that like BYU had some good teams and then obviously BYU left, but
00:10:05St. Mary's was good. I think all these other schools
00:10:08use Gonzaga's
00:10:11Prestige to their benefit it lifted it all all the schools up
00:10:15And I think they did a good job of like stepping up and building good basketball programs
00:10:19but I also think
00:10:20like Gonzaga did hit a ceiling a long time ago like they hit a
00:10:25They were a massive massive fish in a tiny pond and the WCC did their damnedest to like make that pond beautiful
00:10:32And they cleaned it up and they put a fountain in the middle of the pond and they they they paved a nice little sidewalk
00:10:38They put a little bench right there
00:10:40You could take your best gal and sit next to the ponds and have a have a grand old time
00:10:45Planted a bunch of trees tape, but in the end you can't do anything about the size of the pond
00:10:48It's that it's that small and the Pac-12 like as it stands
00:10:52I don't know if it's like demonstrably that much better, but it is better
00:10:56It's right definitively better like I know that this the group of teams that they have in the Pac-12 is
00:11:00Better than the group of teams they have in the West Coast Conference, so I'm excited for
00:11:05Gonzaga because they are it's not a it's not a step into the Big Ten or the SEC or the Big 12 or whatever like
00:11:12I was probably hoping eventually what happened, but
00:11:15There is a lot of growth potential with the Pac-12 and and and two
00:11:19I think Gonzaga is going to now help with that growth. I think it's gonna they're gonna feed into each other
00:11:24They're the best basketball school in the conference, right? I mean them in San Diego, San Diego State year will be cool
00:11:28Um, but yeah immediately walk in and if they're legit, yeah, they're still they're still like that
00:11:34but that's that's kind of like a
00:11:36That that's what makes it feel like if if you wanted to be a bitter WCC fan, you'd say it's a lateral move
00:11:42It's not but but that's the kind of line of thinking is like I mean
00:11:46Like we had some good programs too and like the Pac-12 has San Diego State who's good
00:11:50But like I mean St. Mary's is pretty good. You know, St. Mary's has gone to final four
00:11:53Um, but here's my thing for you then in the WCC can st. Mary's now fill that void?
00:12:00Like they will like Gonzaga made like 26 tournaments they went to the championship twice
00:12:04They never won one, but they always benefit there. They're always in the tournament because no matter what happened
00:12:10They would kind of clean up in that conference. Yeah now to st
00:12:14Mary's clean up in that conference and are they always in the tournament? I would imagine they would yeah
00:12:18I would imagine that it's there for the taking for st. Mary's. Yeah. I mean Randy Bennett's like it. He's a little older
00:12:23That's the only problem is I ideally this happened like 15 years ago

00:12:36but you know, it has been a mutually beneficial relationship for st. Mary's and and the rest of
00:12:42WCC to have Gonzaga in the conference. They're obviously gonna take a massive hit. They are
00:12:47I mean, they just like they're still going to exist as um, I still think that they have good basketball
00:12:52I think I think San Francisco has a had a decent program through the years
00:12:56I
00:12:57They're adding Grand Canyon Grand Canyon's a good program like this. They're gonna have a bunch of like
00:13:03You can see the vision type programs, but if we're being completely honest to get a small
00:13:09Conference on the west coast to matter to the rest of the country
00:13:12It took a Gonzaga took a team that it's going to take teams that you say that team can win a national championship now Gonzaga
00:13:18Hasn't to this point but there are there were Gonzaga teams that were capable of winning the national championship
00:13:23and if you were a college basketball fan, you had to pay attention to to the games that they were playing and
00:13:29By extension the entire conference and now you don't have to do that
00:13:32And I think like if you're a real sicko college basketball pervert, you'll watch the WCC
00:13:37So you'll recognize that there's good basketball being played out there
00:13:40but I think they're like Nash's I think the TV deals and like the
00:13:45You know, I I don't know how many WCC games are gonna be on ESPN at like 1030 Eastern anymore
00:13:50I don't know. I don't know if that's gonna be really happening
00:13:52yeah, the opportunity was there to put yourself on the map the past like 40 years or whatever is

00:14:40It's literally Utah State San Diego State Fresno State Colorado State Boys State, Oregon State, Washington State and Gonzaga Gonzaga State

00:14:49There's no there's no banger programs. They're really except for maybe San Diego State
00:14:54so I find that fascinating but I do think the growth potential is much better than it was with the WCC because one the

00:15:09despite none of those programs real other than San Diego State Gonzaga really feeling like

00:15:16I'm gonna die in the next 10 years if one of the Pac-12 schools doesn't win and I have to pick a school other than

00:15:24San Diego State I would just probably shoot your dad. Yeah, I would just shoot myself now, right?
00:15:28But the so they have no other like national title prospects
00:15:32But the average program in the conference is better than that
00:15:36I think it's like if you compare it to college football
00:15:38There are years where the Big Ten and SEC like the top end we've shown Ohio State Michigan can go beat them

00:15:48Minnesota's right, Illinois's and then not a great year example, but right not a good not good year for but Illinois generally
00:15:55Like if LSU comes in fifth in the SEC, they would come to right lean the Big Ten rock in that spot

00:20:42Financially though for Memphis really that's what I heard with the traveling and stuff

00:21:46And then as we wait on that Florida State and Clemson are trying to get out of the ACC
00:21:50They see in the big big 10 and SEC are meeting to just create their own great your own Super League
