The UN is "gravely concerned by the widening hostilities in the Middle East," says Liz Throssell, spokesperson for the organisation's rights office. Speaking at a press briefing, as the Israeli military claims its ground troops have carried out raids against Hezbollah in south Lebanon, Throssell adds that "a large-scale ground invasion by Israel into Lebanon would only result in greater suffering."

00:00We are gravely concerned by the widening hostilities in the Middle East and their potential to
00:12engulf the entire region in a humanitarian and human rights catastrophe.
00:18The prospects that the situation may deteriorate further with a terrible impact on civilians
00:24and that it could rapidly expand to embroil other states in the region are real.
00:29With armed violence between Israel and Hezbollah boiling over, the consequences for civilians
00:34have already been awful and we fear a large-scale ground invasion by Israel into Lebanon would
00:39only result in greater suffering.
