00:00I want to ask you a question now that has nothing to do with the playoffs.
00:07You saw Paul Skeens set down murderer's row in the Bronx, humiliate them with nothing
00:13but 100 mile an hour gas.
00:16You know the numbers, you know the stats, you know his record, you know his ERA, you
00:22know his strikeouts, you know his whip, and you're still going to give that Jackson Merrill
00:28the Rookie of the Year over that guy?
00:30You must be nuts, Scott Miller.
00:33I will turn on you unless you admit that Skeens is the Rookie of the Year right now.
00:38Where was Merrill the last month?
00:42I like your style, as always, Scott, and yeah, I'll give you two answers.
00:49One, absolutely you can make the argument for Paul Skeens.
00:53If he wins the Rookie of the Year award, it's well earned, it's well deserved, and good
00:57for him, and I don't think there should be any argument at all.
01:02There is a case to be made for Merrill, and I would almost lean that way because for a
01:09number of reasons.
01:10You know, the Padres cut $90 million from their payroll last year.
01:14They didn't have a center fielder when spring training started.
01:17Jackson Merrill never played center field before.
01:19He's converted in spring training.
01:21He's helped them on both sides of the ball, offensively, defensively.
01:25He's obviously played almost every game.
01:30As a starting pitcher, whether you're Paul Skeens or anybody, you're, you know, not because
01:34it's your position, but you're relegated, you know, every fifth day or so, whereas,
01:39you know, Merrill also from the eighth inning or later has like six or seven home runs that
01:45have either tied the game or won the game in the eighth inning or later for the Padres.
01:51You know, he's been money when they needed it, and here's where you can quibble about
01:57whether the Rookie of the Year is purely an individual award or if you like your guy to
02:03contribute to the team.
02:04I mean, Merrill helped lift the Padres into the playoffs.
02:09You know, Skeens didn't really have the opportunity because he didn't have help among the Pirates,
02:15but, you know, you could argue Merrill because, as I said, all the offensive and defensive
02:20greatness plus helping, you know, he played a big part in getting the Padres to the playoffs.
02:26So I think if Merrill wins, I think it's deserved, and I think I could, you know, I could see
02:30that.
02:31Not to waffle on you, but Skeens, it's kind of comparing apples and oranges, different
02:35positions, but yeah, the numbers are phenomenal, some of the best ever, so it's going to be
02:41fascinating.
02:42Dominant.
02:43Dominant.
02:44Total domination of Major League Baseball hitters.
02:47He dominated the headlines, dominated baseball television, dominated the All-Star Talk.
02:54Everything.
02:55Everything.
02:56Everything he did was domination.
02:58It's amazing to me what he did.
02:59I don't deny Jackson's a great player.
03:02I like the Padres.
03:03You know I like the Padres.
03:04You know I like the Padre games.
03:05I put my money where my mouth is.
03:08I like Petco.
03:09I like everything about the Pirates.
03:11I'm rooting for San Diego in the National League playoffs.
03:15That's just all there is to it, and I hate the Dodgers.
