00:00Ouch direct from the a-list
00:22Oh
00:30Hello
00:32Good evening everybody
00:34Yes you are very welcome to the show
00:36Yeah like pumpkin spice salade
00:38We're back for the autumn
00:40And we've got a good'un for you
00:42Yes later we'll have music right over there
00:44From Jack Severetti and Miles Kane
00:46Yeah
00:48They'll be performing a track from Jack's latest album
00:50But first on my sofa tonight
00:52Since his BAFTA winning role
00:54As Morris Voss of the IT crowd
00:56This actor, writer and director has continued
00:58To stare at the camera with his arms folded
01:00In the likes of Travelman
01:02The Crystal Maze
01:04And as presenter of the BAFTAs
01:06His latest book
01:08The unfinished Harold Hughes
01:10Has been described as Nabokov meets Spinal Tap
01:12It's also very funny
01:14Like it's author Richard Ayoade
01:18There he is
01:20Hello sir
01:22Nice to see you
01:24Have a seat too
01:26This Irish superstar
01:28Has played opposite so many acting greats
01:30Tom Cruise
01:32Al Pacino
01:34Nicole Kidman
01:36And my personal favourite
01:38Jenny the donkey
01:40That was in the Banshees of Ennish Erin
01:42Which last year won him a richly deserved
01:44First Oscar nomination
01:46Now he's unrecognisable and brilliant
01:48As supervillain turned crime boss
01:50The Penguin
01:52Please welcome the great Colin Farrell
01:56Hello
01:58How are you
02:00Good to see you
02:02I'm going to give you a hug
02:04Go on
02:06She burst onto the scene
02:08As part of the 80s Hollywood Brat Pack
02:10Going on to become one of the biggest film stars
02:12In the world
02:14In hits like Indecent Proposal
02:16A Few Good Men, G.I. Jane
02:18And the iconic Ghost
02:20Now she is giving an extraordinary performance
02:22As Elizabeth Sparkle
02:24And the substance
02:26Which critics are saying is
02:28I think they like it
02:30It's a pleasure to welcome for the first time
02:32Demi Moore
02:38So nice to see you
02:40Meet the boys
02:46And she's a pop superstar
02:48An actor
02:50A fashion icon
02:5213 Grammys, 2 Golden Globes
02:54A BAFTA and an Oscar
02:56For Best Original Song in A Star Is Born
02:58Now she's striking up
03:00A bad romance
03:02As Harley Quinn in Joker
03:04It is a warm welcome back
03:06To the one and only Lady Gaga
03:14So good, so nice to see you
03:22I know
03:24I know
03:26I know
03:28They're pleased
03:30Some kind of buyer's remorse
03:32They're happy
03:34So welcome back to Richard, Colin and Lady Gaga
03:36But a first time welcome to Demi
03:38Thank you, so happy to be here
03:40I feel like I finally made it
03:42Yeah right, this is it
03:44Now you have been travelling all over the world
03:46Promoting The Substance
03:48But you haven't been alone
03:50You've been upstaged at every turn
03:52Yes, I have a significant other
03:54Yes, I think we've got a
03:56We've got a picture, there
03:58This is, what's
04:00Pilaf?
04:02It's a
04:04Pilaf the little mouse
04:06And is it a male mouse or a female mouse?
04:08It's a female
04:10I want a selfie with it
04:12Oh, and it is photogenic
04:14Pilaf is very photogenic
04:16Because it's done a cover shoot
04:18I knew that she had really moved into
04:20A whole new category when my publicist
04:22Got a call just for Pilaf
04:24To be on the cover of Doge
04:26Doge, is there really a dog?
04:28For real
04:30It's Vogue for dogs
04:32I got that part
04:34That's amazing
04:36That's amazing
04:38Have you got that framed in your house?
04:40Not yet, but I plan to
04:42And that's the size the dog actually is
04:44Obviously, why did you leave her
04:46In the snow
04:50Pilaf isn't on set yet
04:52No, but she is here
04:54Shall I?
04:56We ought to
05:02Did we mic the dog?
05:04To hear her heartbeat
05:06Oh my, oh my, oh my
05:12Oh, you're so good
05:14She's so weird
05:18Do you have treats in your pocket?
05:20No, no, she's just an equal opportunity receiver
05:24Now, does Pilaf understand this is television
05:26So she ought to piss
05:28And that would go viral for us
05:32I had a feel backstage
05:34Yes, you had a feel backstage
05:36Oh, I'm afraid I'm going to hurt her
05:38I know, and she's so fragile
05:40Oh my god, she's so little
05:42The tongue is amazing
05:48How old is Pilaf?
05:50She's so cute
05:52Pilaf will be four in November
05:54I don't mean this rudely, but looks older
05:58She had one flaw
06:00Which is she didn't have a full set of teeth
06:02And she had to lose some, hence why the tongue does not stay in
06:04Oh, no way
06:08She's perfect
06:10I think the teeth pulled straight away
06:12She's so cute
06:14Should we let Pilaf relax?
06:16I don't want her to steal everything
06:18I'll take her back
06:20Pilaf, everybody
06:26I love that I have this level of couch
06:28But a very small dog
06:30Shits all over everything
06:34Now, you were here tonight as an author
06:36But you are also a director
06:38A director of films
06:40Have you worked with any of the people on the sofa?
06:42I have not
06:44I have sent Colin a script
06:46Which I had told you I was yet to read
06:48No, the good thing is
06:50Because we were both on this
06:52You had to read it
06:54Is it a no yet?
06:56You had to read it, otherwise it could have been awkward
06:58That's the gospel
07:00I said to him
07:02I said
07:04Yes, I said to him
07:06Greensbury rules, of course
07:08He's agreed to do it for no money
07:10Which is very nice
07:12That's Colin
07:14Anytime you want
07:16I'm there, I will not take a penny
07:20Colin's words, not mine
07:22Alright
07:24We're going to start with Lady Gaga's new movie
07:26Joker
07:28I know
07:30It opens in cinemas on the 4th of October
07:32And this is the sequel to
07:34Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix
07:36And you play Harley Quinn
07:38But what version of Harley Quinn is this?
07:40What can you tell us about her?
07:42So I play Lee Quinzel
07:44That's my version of Harley Quinn
07:46And you know
07:48This movie, this story
07:50Really centres around Arthur Fleck
07:52If you saw the first film, you know him
07:54And in the first film, Todd really slowed down
07:56To take a look at Arthur Fleck's life
07:58Somebody that maybe would get pushed aside
08:00Or passed by on the street
08:02To see who he was and what made him Joker
08:04So in this film
08:06He meets Lee, my character
08:08And they fall in love
08:10But she's very different than the Harley Quinn
08:12That everybody has known before
08:14I tried to root her in the reality
08:16Of this film
08:18And create Arthur's match
08:20Who would be the person that he would love
08:22If he stopped for a moment
08:24To talk to her
08:26What would be the storm inside of her
08:28That would make her catch his eye
08:30So that's my Lee
08:32She's got a little bit of a hurricane
08:34Inside her, like the ground is shaking
08:36All the time
08:38Or a bomb might go off in her
08:40We've got a clip, this is you as Harley
08:42Visiting the Joker, played by Joaquin Phoenix
08:44In the asylum
08:46This is going to be good for us
08:48Now I can be at your trial everyday
08:50I can see you everyday until you get out
08:54We're going to build a mountain
08:56You're perfect
08:58I want to see the real you
09:27It's just us now
09:42Thank you
09:44Here's the thing, that scene where you're putting the
09:46You know, you're putting the mask on the Joker
09:48And I heard you talking about this
09:50That in ways you really relate to that idea
09:52Of wearing a mask
09:54And how that can help you in your life
09:56Well, I don't know if it helped me
10:00Yeah, I've always kind of had a relationship
10:02With dual identities through my music
10:04And creating characters on stage
10:06Which was maybe
10:08Unconventional to some people
10:10You know, playing an actor in a film makes a lot of sense
10:12But everybody wants to kind of see you be yourself
10:14On stage, and I am myself on stage
10:16I'm just also something else
10:18And so I was really
10:20Interested in making this film
10:22Because Arthur is this
10:24Kind of incredibly unique person
10:26Who has this affliction
10:28That he suffers with
10:30And the way that people treat him
10:32Where he lives in Gotham
10:34Joker is kind of like
10:36A symptom of his conditions
10:38And I just thought that that was
10:40A really beautiful way to tell the story of Joker
10:42And I thought it was also beautiful for a love story
10:44Who would be the complex woman
10:46That would
10:48Love him completely
10:50And who would, to me, love Joker
10:52And love Arthur too
10:54And Lady Gaga, as one would hope
10:56Music in Folly You Dare
10:58But am I right in thinking that when this goes out
11:00On Friday night, by the time that happens
11:02There will be a new Lady Gaga record
11:04In the world
11:06Yeah, so I was really inspired by my character
11:08Lee, and all the music in the movie
11:10So I decided to make my own album
11:12Called Harlequin, inspired by her
11:14And it's all
11:16Original productions
11:18That I did
11:20To basically define her
11:22Without defining her at all
11:24There's a lot of jazz influence
11:26And I take you through
11:28So many different genres on the record
11:30To me, Harley
11:32Cannot be pinned down, she's a woman that can't be defined
11:34So I was sort of saying
11:36I'll be jazz when I want to be jazz
11:38And I'll be funk when I want to be funk
11:40And then I'll be soul, and then I'll be blues, and then I'll be church
11:42I'll be whatever I want to be
11:44Whenever I want to be it
11:46Because I think women, you know, we want to feel that way sometimes
11:52And the truth is, we aren't any one thing
11:54We're a lot of things
11:56Yes, and we can be all those things
11:58At the same time
12:00The album is called Harlequin
12:02And I think we've got the cover art there
12:08I was lucky enough to hear the album
12:10Because it's not the soundtrack
12:12It's such a joyful album
12:14Thank you
12:16She's super happy
12:18Over the moon
12:20But it's a joyous thing
12:22To hear you sing these standards
12:24I think it's a great record
12:26For if you're having dinner with your friends
12:28And one of your crazy holiday parties
12:30It's meant to be
12:32Music to have fun to
12:34But yeah, it's not the soundtrack
12:36It's a companion piece to the movie
12:38Now talking of singing
12:40We saw you at the Paris Olympics
12:42That was me?
12:44Yeah, that was you
12:48I mean, you know, as a superstar
12:50Do you think, really, in the rain, I'm doing this?
12:52Because it was properly raining
12:54It was properly raining
12:56But the most crazy thing was that they
12:58Insisted that the staircase be carpeted
13:00For the performance
13:02And it was raining, so it was wet carpet
13:04In my underwear
13:06If anyone wants to perform on TV
13:08In their underwear, on a wet carpet
13:10Call me
13:12But now, it was the Paris Olympics
13:14But there was an extra ring
13:20I see what you did
13:22That was good
13:24No, because you got engaged
13:26Did you get engaged at the Olympics?
13:28Actually, yeah
13:30That's last night
13:32We got engaged, actually
13:34On April 1st
13:36Actually, I thought he was joking
13:38He was not
13:40But, yeah, it was really nice
13:42And then we went to
13:44Paris for the Olympics
13:46And the Prime Minister actually
13:48Had his people filming us
13:50While they were saying hello
13:52And they caught me saying, oh, this is my fiancée
13:54And I was trying to keep it hidden
13:56But then they announced it to everyone
13:58But that was kind of fun
14:00I like that you get the full Team USA
14:02Thing by going to the Olympics
14:04It's good
14:06You were awesome
14:08You were awesome
14:10And very quickly, Lady Gaga
14:12I must say, in Joke of Hollywood
14:14Obviously, you're marvellous, Joaquin Phoenix
14:16But we must mention some of the other cast
14:18A close friend of Colin's, Brendan Gleeson
14:20Oh, yeah
14:22I loved working with Brendan
14:24He's so sweet
14:26Really, really cool guy
14:28And did you know him when this happened?
14:30Look at that
14:32You know, I was doing that sweet thing
14:34When you see someone and you go, oh, hi
14:36And then that happened
14:40He saw you puckering up and he went, okay
14:42His eyes are wide open
14:44He wants to remember this moment
14:46He knows exactly what he was doing
14:48Not to mention his right hand
14:50Oh, yes
14:52It's just like pre-tango
14:54You found yourself in a similar clinch
14:56Go on, then
15:00My eyes are closed because I'm in heaven
15:02And then that's where I got COVID
15:04He's okay
15:06Really?
15:08Fact
15:10Brendan the super spreader
15:12Hand on the back of the head
15:14You're going to get it, son
15:16I want it all in there
15:18Yeah
15:20That was in Nando's as well
15:22But it is a terrific cast
15:24Just a brilliant movie
15:26Joker is out on the 4th of October
15:28Yeah
15:30I hope so
15:36All right, we're moving on to Demi Moore's
15:38Extraordinary new film
15:40The Substance
15:42It is out now
15:44And if you haven't seen it, it has to be seen to be believed
15:46But I highly recommend
15:48Don't see it alone
15:50I saw it alone
15:52I know
15:54I still enjoyed it
15:56It's just good to have someone with you to witness it
15:58Just so that you can go, oh my god
16:00It's just a bonkers film
16:02A brilliantly bonkers film
16:04How are you describing it to people?
16:06It's actually almost impossible to fully describe
16:08And you don't want to give it all away
16:10No, but the general kind of gist
16:12Is one, it's
16:14Dealing with ageing
16:16And it, you know
16:18I play a woman who is being fired
16:20From her own show
16:22An actress who has a fitness show
16:24Because she's ageing out
16:26And she gets, you know, sees her face
16:28Being ripped down from a poster
16:30Of her campaign
16:32So everything, she's at the lowest point of her life
16:34And is offered a substance
16:36For a newer, better, younger
16:38Her
16:40But unbeknownst to her
16:42That is not me that transforms
16:44It's another entity that comes out of me
16:46It's like a young clone
16:48We share consciousness
16:50Where can I get it?
16:52You're the problem
16:54I got some in the back
16:56I'm happy to share
16:58So that's like
17:00The long, it's very difficult to fully describe
17:02But it is interesting, so you kind of think
17:04We're used to this idea of a potion
17:06That can make you young again
17:08But you, Elizabeth Sparkle
17:10In her 50s exists alongside
17:12The young Elizabeth Sparkle
17:14Played by Margaret Qualley
17:16Did you cast her?
17:18Were you responsible for casting her as the young you?
17:20No, I think our director Corley
17:22Was looking for a right match
17:24But in fact not wanting us to look identical
17:26So she chose
17:28A taller, blue-eyed version
17:30Of me, which I can say
17:32I always wanted blue eyes
17:34I wanted longer legs
17:36But you know, what's interesting in the film
17:38Just to kind of give in more seriousness
17:40Is that, you know, that idea
17:42Of the pursuit of perfection
17:44Leading us down a road
17:46Where we then only decay
17:48Further away from
17:50Being able to embrace the beauty
17:52Of all that we are in the present moment
17:54Yeah, and I suppose we ought to flag up
17:56That is a proper, full-on
17:58Body horror, I mean, there is
18:00Blood, blood
18:02There's about 30 gallons
18:04Not exaggerating
18:06No, no, for real
18:08Where did they keep the blood on set?
18:10It was in a fire
18:12They did it on a carpet
18:14She used it with a fire hose
18:16Really?
18:18You haven't gotten to that scene yet
18:20You haven't gotten to the scene
18:22But yeah, I think
18:24It's dealing with some really interesting
18:26Subject matter
18:28The best way I can sum it up is
18:30It's kind of like the picture of Dorian Gray
18:32Meets Death Becomes Her
18:34And a Jane Fonda workout
18:36I mean, that is the movie
18:38Your performance is so
18:40Intense and visceral
18:42We've got a clip here
18:44Set it up for us, I think
18:46You're going on a date
18:48I'm just getting ready for a regular date
18:52So this is a moment
18:54Where she has
18:56An offer to ultimately
18:58Allow her to almost escape
19:00The self-imposed prison
19:02Of her own
19:04Isolation
19:06And she's been asked out
19:08And it's a moment of true compare
19:10And despair
19:12Which we've all had
19:14You're looking, let me just try to fix this
19:16No, let me change that
19:18And the more we try to make it better, we just make it worse
19:20Here it is
19:44Here it is
19:50Wow, so intense
19:54I love both of our sequences
19:56It's all about lipstick tonight
19:58Oh yeah
20:00You must be so proud of this movie
20:02I think I'm very
20:04I'm really moved by the fact that it
20:06Actually is, has the potential
20:08Of laying a few pavers down
20:10For a cultural shift
20:12I don't think any one thing creates that shift
20:14But I think the way in which we look at ourselves
20:16The way in which
20:18We hold ourselves
20:20It's important to find the love and the value
20:22And appreciation for who we are
20:24As we are
20:26In whatever moment we're in
20:28And I hope that this can kind of help
20:30Move that needle
20:32I think it's really interesting, that idea of body image
20:34And being vulnerable
20:36It kind of goes back to that incredible
20:38Iconic moment
20:40At the New York City Fair
20:42Were we seven months pregnant?
20:44Seven and a half months pregnant
20:46Wow, I mean that has become such a kind of
20:48It was a real moment
20:50I mean the fuss at the time
20:52Was this your idea?
20:54Well this wasn't actually
20:56We were shooting this at the end of the shoot
20:58Just for me, it wasn't for the magazine
21:00And I said at that moment, why wouldn't it be great
21:02If they could use this for the cover
21:04And then two weeks later
21:06Annie Leibovitz called and said
21:08What do you think?
21:10And I was like, amazing
21:12I mean I didn't know it would have such an impact
21:14And it's been so replicated
21:16I mean the thing is
21:18It's not like I was the first person
21:20But it's the idea
21:22That we've lived in times where
21:24Once you were that big pregnant
21:26You weren't supposed to remind anybody
21:28That you'd ever had sex
21:30You reminded everyone
21:32I did, yes
21:34And who's in there? Is that Scout in there?
21:36It was Scout when Scout figured out, oh I'm on the cover of Vanity Fair
21:38Oh they saw it right away
21:40They loved it
21:42I mean the reason I did it was for them
21:44Not even for me
21:46It's for each of them
21:48I did it with Annie, with all three of my children
21:50And I heard you talking about
21:52Reading the script for The Substance
21:54And you said it reminded you of reading the script
21:56For Ghost
21:58Yeah because there's something about
22:00When I read The Substance
22:02I thought, wow this could be really
22:04Amazing
22:06Or it could be a fucking disaster
22:08And so of course I had to say yes
22:10And I feel like Ghost was very similar
22:12It's like, okay we're going to do a comedy
22:14A thriller and a romance
22:16Okay, but I think when we
22:18Push ourselves out of our comfort zone
22:20When we do things that make us a little afraid
22:22It always makes us a little better
22:24Even if it fails
22:26And wasn't there a moment when the reviews came out for Ghost
22:28You kind of thought, uh oh, it's not going well
22:30The reviews were disastrous
22:32For Ghost
22:34And then, people loved it
22:36That makes no sense
22:38They were awful
22:40Because it'll survive decades, it'll keep going
22:42Forever
22:44They were awful, and I thought, wow I can't trust myself
22:46Because I actually thought I saw something that was good
22:48And I love that you are a proper collector
22:50You've kept the pottery you made
22:52Okay, let's not
22:54Go wild, my piece of pottery looks like a
22:56Kindergartner
22:58I mean literally, my pots are pitiful
23:00Well, he kept coming up behind you
23:02So
23:04Very difficult
23:06Very difficult
23:08You've got to concentrate
23:10Yes, you're right
23:12It reduces the quality of the work
23:14That wasn't your fault
23:16Good point, thank you, I appreciate that
23:18Are they on display in your house?
23:20I have them tucked away
23:22Okay, do you always save things from movies?
23:24Like, did you keep anything from the substance?
23:26I do, I have
23:28When people see the film, you'll see the drug
23:30That we're given is this, you know
23:32Kind of fluorescent green-yellow
23:34Substance, and it says
23:36The Activator on it, and I have one of those
23:38Fantastic, well listen
23:40It's terrific, I hope people flock to the cinema to see it
23:42The Substance, it's out in cinemas now
23:48Okay, we're moving on
23:50Colin Farrell
23:52No, no, we're still just talking
23:54Right, Colin Farrell is
23:56The Penguin
23:58Critically acclaimed, already a huge viewing hit
24:00The first episode is already out there
24:02And new episodes drop on Monday
24:04On Sky and Now
24:06Now, we first saw you as the penguin in the movie
24:08The Robert Pattinson movie
24:10So, it begins
24:12Is it a week after the end of the first movie?
24:14Yes, at the end of the first film, the Batman film
24:16The Riddler exploded the city walls
24:18That keeps the water back
24:20And the place is flooded
24:22And it's about a week after that
24:24And it's about a week after that
24:26And it's about a week after that
24:28And it's about a week after that
24:30And it's about a week after that
24:32And it's about a week after that
24:34And it's about a week after that
24:36And it's about a week after that
24:38And it's about a week after that
24:40And it's about a week after that
24:42And it's about a week after that
24:44And it's about a week after that
24:46And it's about a week after that
24:48And it's about a week after that
24:50And it's about a week after that
24:52And it's about a week after that
24:54And it's about a week after that
24:56And it's about a week after that
24:58And it's about a week after that
25:00And it's about a week after that
25:02And it's about a week after that
25:04And it's about a week after that
25:06And it's about a week after that
25:08And it's about a week after that
25:10And it's about a week after that
25:12And it's about a week after that
25:14And it's about a week after that
25:16And it's about a week after that
25:18And it's about a week after that
25:20And it's about a week after that
25:22And it's about a week after that
25:24And it's about a week after that
25:26And it's about a week after that
25:28And it's about a week after that
25:30And it's about a week after that
25:32And it's about a week after that
25:34And it's about a week after that
25:36And it's about a week after that
25:38And it's about a week after that
25:40And it's about a week after that
25:42And it's about a week after that
25:44And it's about a week after that
25:46And it's about a week after that
25:48It was Mike Marino's genius as an artist
25:50So it was kind of like, the creation of the character
25:52was a collective of a load of people
25:54People that designed the body
25:56That was totally his imagination
25:58Was that hard to, the make-up every day
26:00Did you ever panic?
26:02Panic, like panic attacky panic?
26:04No, not in make-up, just as myself
26:08But I did, like
26:10You know the way it's hard to say it's hard
26:12Because you know what hard life actually is
26:14And we do what we do
26:16But I will say that by the end of it
26:18I was a bit miserable
26:20I remember my sister being on the set
26:22And going back to the trailer and saying to Claudine
26:24Am I being a dick on the set?
26:26And she was like no
26:28And I said okay good, because I was just angry
26:30I was just angry by the end of it
26:32And I remember looking up Jim Carrey
26:34I remember hearing a story that Jim Carrey
26:36Struggled when he was doing
26:38The Grinch
26:40We all do
26:42When he was doing The Grinch
26:44I remember that Ron Howard, the director of The Grinch
26:46Spent a day in the make-up
26:48Just to see what it felt like
26:50There should have been a support group for people in prosthetics
26:52Because I would have been there
26:54He got guys who
26:56Oh he did, he got Navy SEALs
26:58Or FBI guys
27:00Who undergoes torture
27:02To counsel him about how to get through it
27:04To calm himself and how to work on his breath
27:06So I never got to Jim Carrey's level
27:08So many ways in life
27:10But I did struggle by the end of it
27:12I was just in my own noggin
27:14And the material was really dark as well
27:16I'd never done anything like that
27:18Was it as dark as Banshees?
27:20Darker, because there was love in Banshees
27:22Banshees is kind of love unanswered
27:24It's the pain of that
27:26And even though there's the mutilation
27:28I do like to meditate to them
27:30To Banshees?
27:32Twisted, twisted puppy
27:34I know
27:36My man comes home and he's like
27:38Why?
27:40What scene?
27:42I think it's actually just the tone of the film
27:44And the scene
27:46The scenery is beautiful
27:48And the music, Carter Burwell
27:50In terms of watching your performance
27:52I was saying to you backstage
27:54You do forget, in the first 15 minutes
27:56You keep going, wow that's Colin Farrell
27:58And then you kind of forget about it
28:00And you're just watching a drama
28:02When we are looking at this man
28:04Is any of that you?
28:06Well that's me needing a bowel movement
28:08You can tell by the expression
28:10And realising it takes 2 hours
28:12To get out of the body suit
28:14Can I ask, do they do your hands as well?
28:16My hands were the only thing that was me
28:18It was a full body suit
28:20It was 3 hours of make-up in the morning
28:22And about 40 minutes to take it off
28:24So we can see your eyes
28:26How do you go to the bathroom?
28:28Just curious
28:30I don't eat breakfast or lunch
28:32That's the most civilised way to answer that
28:34But for a piss, yeah
28:36I was sweating crazy
28:38So you need to have your sat-nav
28:40To find yourself
28:42On top of it all
28:44There's a zip and a button and a pad
28:46And a flap
28:48I have very similar stuff as well
28:52You know what I'm talking about
28:54It's just for safety
28:56So the eyes are you
28:58What about the mouth, are the teeth yours?
29:00The teeth, all but one
29:02I have a gold tooth
29:04It was so comprehensive
29:06And to look at myself in the mirror
29:08In the trailer
29:10And see that staring back at me
29:12Was very powerful
29:14So you're in all the prosthetics
29:16You're looking out of this thing
29:18Onto this dark world
29:20Looking out in a different way
29:22What was that like when you went home then?
29:24It was weird, it was funny to say looking out
29:26Because I was in a sauna one night
29:28In New York
29:30In a public bathhouse
29:32A public bathhouse?
29:34Don't ask
29:36It's called the bathhouse
29:38It's a lovely place
29:40I was there one night
29:42And a fella looked at me
29:44I bet he did
29:46After a long day on the Penguin
29:48And I looked back at him
29:50And I realised I was looking at him
29:52In the same way I felt my look
29:54During work
29:56When you do it so long
29:58It comes home with you
30:00It's okay to bring your work home
30:02You can't inflict it on those you love
30:04That you share a house with
30:06But it's okay for it to come home
30:08But anyway, I looked at the guy
30:10And I realised I was looking as Oz looks
30:12And I felt like that
30:14And he just kind of went like that
30:16And I don't know if he thought I wanted to fight him
30:18And I never asked
30:20But there was something kind of very powerful
30:22About the makeup man
30:24That it did take a hold of the mood
30:26If you gave yourself over to it
30:28You give yourself over to it
30:30And the writing's good
30:32It takes over
30:34It's lovely, your imagination comes online
30:36And that's it
30:38Well for people who haven't seen it
30:40Let's have a little glimpse
30:42This is you as Oz Corb
30:44Meeting Sophia Falcone
30:46Played by Christine Melotti
30:48That'll do
30:50Yeah, here we go
30:52Was that a yes or?
30:54Sophia, please, join us
30:56Oh, I didn't mean to interrupt
31:02Oz, you remember Carmine's daughter?
31:04Yeah
31:06Sophia
31:08I thought you were still at
31:12Arkham?
31:14Yeah
31:16No
31:18I've been rehabilitated
31:20I've been rehabilitated
31:22That was amazing
31:24Wow, it's so great
31:26It's on another level
31:28But also
31:30New York accent
31:32I was born in New York
31:34You were from that part of the world
31:36You nailed it
31:38That's one hell of a sauna, I've got to say
31:42It's a good thing I didn't wear the suit in
31:44I would have melted
31:46I love the link in the worlds
31:48It's where Joker and you are
31:52It's one big dysfunctional disaster
31:54It sounds like they inhabit a similar space
31:56A lot of uncertainty in the lives
31:58And the psychology
32:00I'm so excited to see your movie
32:02I'm excited to see yours too
32:04I'm a really big fan of your work
32:06Everybody here
32:08Honestly
32:10It's true
32:12I mean it
32:14Take it
32:16Just to remind you all
32:18Colin Farrell continues his journey
32:20As the Penguin on Sky and Now
32:22Each Monday
32:24That's the take away here
32:26That's the take away
32:32Now
32:34Richard Ayoade has written a book everybody
32:36Yes he has
32:40Now
32:42Bear with
32:44We haven't finished Harold Hughes
32:46It's out on the 3rd of October
32:48So let's begin
32:50Who is Harold Hughes?
32:52Harold Hughes is a hugely important playwright
32:54British playwright
32:56Post war
32:58I stumbled across his work
33:00In a book shop
33:02And I saw that he looked very much like me
33:04This is a painting of Harold Hughes
33:06He looks quite like me
33:08He does look quite like you
33:10Thank you
33:12Yes
33:14It's very similar
33:16And so the book is sort of
33:18Like a mock documentary about my journey
33:20To find Harold Hughes
33:22Harold Hughes doesn't exist
33:24I should make this clear
33:26This is so complicated
33:28There's a lot of tension
33:30And so the book is really about this kind of
33:32Ridiculous character
33:34Who stops writing
33:36And there's a mystery as to why he stopped writing
33:38And I'm trying to find out why he stopped writing
33:40So here's the thing
33:42So this is the journey of your documentary
33:44To solve the mystery of Harold Hughes
33:46Who has written
33:48Lots of screenplays, novels
33:50Poetries, all sorts of stuff
33:52But those books exist
33:54So you've also written
33:56All of Harold Hughes screenplays
33:58And you've written
34:00This is the complete works of his plays
34:02Poets, pieces of poetry
34:04And these are his three novellas
34:06And there's words in there
34:08Beautiful pictures of Harold Hughes on the back
34:12Now is this the script that you're wanting Colin to play you?
34:14No, that's a different script
34:16That would be a whole different prosthetic
34:18Stronger, more original
34:20We've got the prosthetics worked out
34:22Don't worry, it's racially sensitive
34:24Nice
34:28You won't get into trouble
34:30I wrote all
34:32I wrote everything that Harold Hughes
34:34Wrote in order first
34:36I had a lot of time on my hands
34:38I think Demi Moore would like to get a can opener
34:40And look in your brain
34:42It is fascinating
34:44So you wrote all of this first
34:46Why?
34:48Because I needed to sort of find out who he was
34:50By what he wrote
34:52The why question does suggest
34:54Why did you bother
34:56This is a key question
34:58This is an important question
35:00But I've always wanted to do a thing
35:02Whereby you do a story about someone
35:04And you do all of the things that they did
35:06So you create a complete fictional world
35:08Kind of like a Salinger Glass family world
35:10Or like Spinal Tap
35:12I genuinely love their records
35:14I love Spinal Tap records
35:16And I like the documentary
35:18And where sort of comic worlds
35:20Can kind of go out and become bigger
35:22So that was the idea
35:24Is there anything
35:26I'm sure so much of you is in all of this work
35:28But is there any exact
35:30Anecdote or in the stories
35:32Or in your real life
35:34Yes in terms of how lots of people
35:36Find the character frustrating
35:38I've taken that from my life
35:40But did you discover anything
35:42About yourself through this
35:44Well this is the thing
35:46The book really is about
35:48Whether you should keep writing
35:50And in a way I've answered that question
35:52With those books
35:54So I'm announcing my retirement
35:56From writing
35:58And this is it
36:00I believe you brought one of
36:02Harold's poems with you
36:04Yes Harold wrote a lot of very
36:06Muscular and powerful poetry
36:08As well as you know
36:10His very important films
36:12And I have asked Colin
36:14If he would accompany
36:16It's a two-hander
36:18It's called The Breakdown
36:20I would love to
36:22So now I think you've each got a camera
36:24That you can look at
36:26I'll be playing Colin
36:28I'll try and get into character
36:30Because I
36:32Sorry
36:34Here we go
36:36Excellent
36:38It's going to take four and a half hours
36:40There it is
36:42Don't blow this
36:44So I think
36:46Richard is six
36:48And Colin is three
36:50I'll try and do Harold Hughes' voice as well
36:52So don't be alarmed
36:54And what's it called again
36:56Can we say it together
36:58One, two, three
37:00The Breakdown
37:02Have you broken down?
37:04I have broken down
37:06Where did the event take place?
37:08It took place near my home
37:10How far from your home were you when the event took place?
37:12I don't know how to get to my home
37:14Was the breakdown sudden
37:16Or were there warnings?
37:18No one warns me
37:20Are you with anyone
37:22Or are you on your own?
37:24I'm on my own
37:26Was anyone else involved?
37:28No one else is involved
37:30Would you like to stay where you are until we arrive?
37:32I would like to be home
37:34We are quite busy
37:36Are you okay to wait?
37:38I have time
37:40But I'm not okay
37:42Are you insured?
37:44I am not insured
37:46And what kind of car is your car?
37:48I am not in a car
37:50Perhaps it's better to stay in the car
37:52I do not have a car
37:56You do realise this is AA
37:58I know who you are
38:00We help people who have broken down
38:04I have broken down
38:06People who have broken down in their cars
38:10And what about those who haven't?
38:14Beautiful
38:22Thank you for the work
38:24I've come back out of character now
38:26Edward Traghetti, everybody
38:30Okay, it is time for music
38:32This man is one of our favourite singer-songwriters
38:34Who's recently gone back to his roots
38:36With his first all-Italian album
38:38Miss Italia
38:40Performing
38:42Ba-da-bing, ba-da-boom
38:44With Miles Kane
38:46Please welcome Jack Sabaretti
38:52I'm at the border once again
38:58Somewhere I've never even been
39:02A flag is burning in the night
39:04It's just another sign
39:06But I'm always on the run
39:08I'm always on the run
39:12Like an old-fashioned movie
39:16Where the ending's always you
39:18Where the ending's always you
39:22If tonight you wanna stay
39:24It's up to me to get away
39:26Just like I always do
39:30A-ba-da-bing, a-ba-da-boom
39:32A questo ballo
39:34Io ballo solo
39:36A un passo nuovo
39:38A-ba-da-bing, a-ba-da-boom
39:40Questo ballo
39:42Io ballo solo
39:44Ma senza i trago
39:46Trago
39:48A-ba-da-bing, a-ba-da-boom
39:50Go ahead and turn the light on
39:54There's nothing here for me to see
39:58I've never been afraid of dying
40:00With the sound of your crying
40:02That turned the crowd to me
40:06Like an old-fashioned movie
40:10Where the ending's always you
40:12Where the ending's always you
40:16If tonight you wanna stay
40:18It's up to me to get away
40:20Just like I always do
40:22A-ba-da-bing, a-ba-da-boom
40:24A questo ballo
40:26Io ballo solo
40:28A un passo nuovo
40:30A-ba-da-bing, a-ba-da-boom
40:32Questo ballo
40:34Io ballo solo
40:36Ma senza i trago
40:38A-ba-da-bing, a-ba-da-boom
40:42A-ba-da-bing, a-ba-da-boom
40:46A-ba-da-bing
40:48C'è chi parte, c'è chi torna
40:50C'è chi non ritorna mai
40:52C'è chi parte, c'è chi torna
40:54C'è chi non ritorna mai
40:56C'è chi parte, c'è chi torna
40:58C'è chi non ritorna mai
41:00C'è chi parte, c'è chi torna
41:02C'è chi non ritorna mai
41:04Oh, oh, oh
41:06Io ballo solo
41:08A un passo nuovo
41:10A-ba-da-bing, a-ba-da-boom
41:12Questo ballo
41:14Io ballo solo
41:16Ma senza i trago

42:08Thank you so much for having me.
42:10No, not at all.
42:12This is a vain attempt to make me look less handsome, by the way.

43:30Miss Gaga.
43:32Is there one song that you think your dad
43:34would have loved the most off your album?
43:36Oh, man. Yes.
43:38There is, because there's only one song he heard.
43:40Which was, I never planned, like I said,
43:42on writing an Italian album. It wasn't a choice.
43:44It was like a necessity thing.
43:46But there was one song I wrote at like 3 o'clock in the morning.
43:48And I would usually phone him at 3 o'clock in the morning
43:50when I was staying up too late and just chat about life.
43:52And I said, I've written my first Italian song.
43:54He said it was okay.
43:56You're like an Italian father.
43:58Yeah, it sounds like an Italian father.
44:00But it's the song that means the most.
44:02It's the first song on the album.
44:04And I love your life. Your life is so mad.
44:06Because I follow you on Instagram.
44:08Of course you do. We actually write to each other.
44:10So, you were just doing these huge shows in...
44:12Was it Greece you were just doing?
44:14Greece, but we were blown away.
44:16We went to Romania. I mean, you've played everywhere.
44:18But the audiences in Bucharest, we went to Bulgaria, Sofia.
44:20These are parts of Eastern Europe
44:22that are still not super open to a lot of live music.
44:24So, when you go,
44:26it's the energy, the feeling you get from a crowd.
44:28For someone like...
44:30We don't always play to big crowds like this.
44:32So, that already in itself is unique.
44:34But when you get that unique, genuine...
44:36They're there because they feel this.
44:38Yeah, it's a release.
44:40Exactly. And that was, for us,
44:42very much of a first-time experience.
44:44We're still riding that wave.
44:46People in the UK get to have that experience.
44:48Is it next February?
44:50Yeah, but that's just kind of me alone.
44:52It's a whole different experience.
44:54Stay home, everyone.
44:56Jack just wants to be by himself.
44:58I'll come.
45:00It's all right.
45:02Who's in tonight?
45:04Just Jack.
45:06It'll be me alone with a lot of guests in different cities.
45:08Beautiful. That sounds cool, man.
45:10It'll be good. It'll be awesome.
45:12What I was saying was it'll be different.
45:14It'll be wonderful.
45:16Jack, thank you so much for that beautiful performance.
45:18Good luck with the album and that tour.
45:20Jack Severetti, everybody!
45:22Thank you so much.
45:24Gorgeous.
45:26I love you now.
45:28OK, that is nearly it before we go.
45:30Just time for the first visit of the new series
45:32to the Big Red Chair.
45:34Hello. Hello.
45:36Hi. What's your name?
45:38Brett Dunbar.
45:40Brett Dunbar. We have the full name and address here.
45:42LAUGHTER
45:44We just go with first names,
45:46because people Google people and find them on Facebook
45:48and are really abusive afterwards.
45:50We'll just say Brett. Brett.
45:52Now, I hear an accent. Where are you from?
45:54Originally from South Africa.
45:56OK. But you live here now?
45:58Yes, in Walton-on-Thames.
46:00OK, full address again.
46:02LAUGHTER
46:04Brett wants to be found!
46:06LAUGHTER
46:12Live location.
46:14All right, Brett.
46:16What do you do?
46:18I'm a communications manager for a company.
46:20OK.
46:22LAUGHTER
46:28All right, Brett, off you go with your story.
46:30Right, so I was in South Africa with my best friend.
46:32We were at a lodge,
46:34and we were students,
46:36no money, and we really only had money
46:38for beer and cigarettes.
46:40So we decided to go to a lodge,
46:42and we were on this beautiful gorge,
46:44and my friend Roxanne said,
46:46if you look, Brett, it's a monkey.
46:48And I looked and I said,
46:50no, Rox, that's a baboon.
46:52We need to go.
46:54So we slowly backed away,
46:56and we were the only ones on this gorge,
46:58literally looking between death
47:00and this baboon.
47:02And he came up, sat on our table,
47:04he ate every single one
47:06of our cigarettes, except hers,
47:08cos they were the cheap brand.
47:10Then he put his muzzle
47:12into our beers, downed both
47:14of them, and then,
47:16after a good time, just urinated all over the table.
47:18LAUGHTER
47:20I'm flipping, I'm flipping.
47:22APPLAUSE
47:24I wanted the baboon to do more.
47:26APPLAUSE
47:28He's two years sober now, the baboon.
47:30And also, if that had happened
47:32in Hyde Park, an amazing story.
47:34You were on safari in a lodge.
47:36Yeah, you were on a gorge
47:38in South Africa. Of course there's a baboon.
47:40OK, that really is all we've got time for.
