00:00Sean, that was some comeback, what happened in the dressing room at half-time?
00:14Not a lot, we just tried to correct a few things and told them that it's a team game,
00:20everyone's got to make a difference, not wait for someone else. I just felt we played a bit cagey,
00:24which is understandable obviously, it's a nervy stadium to get that first win.
00:29I think we handled the second half very well, two great moments from, well certainly one great moment from Dwight and another good moment.
00:36I think after that I thought we managed the game well, which obviously has come into question this season,
00:42so I was very pleased with the mentality to see the game through and manage it well,
00:45because I think we kept them down to pretty minimal as regards near-cut chances.
00:49What was the thought process behind the change and how pleased were you to see Harrison have such an immediate impact?
00:55Yes, I said to him he's learning about what it is here, I said to him about reacting to a mistake,
01:02getting after it and shutting the game down. He's a player who is learning about the culture of Everton Football Club
01:09and I think Jack's got more of that about him, because obviously he's learnt quicker,
01:13well not quicker, but he's learnt over his time here. I was pleased for Jack,
01:16because I never mentioned to him lately that his energy is great and he's a very talented footballer at either foot,
01:22but he used it today by doing the simple thing well, we mentioned about playing more simple,
01:25playing two-touch, gets it down to his feet, puts a great ball in, so I'm pleased for him.
01:28I'm pleased for the other subs, it's not an easy game to see through on us, I'm pleased for all the subs today.
01:32How tough was the call to bring Brantford back in so quickly?
01:35Yes, I think it's tough on Keno, I think he's had a strong start for the season and pre-season,
01:40but I think that back five, I don't know the exact stat, but that back five played together quite a lot last season
01:45and obviously have 13 clean sheets in a tough season, so that's a pretty good measure of a back five that works well.
01:52I thought it worked well for the most part anyway, it worked well today.
01:55After a tough start to the season, what does that first win mean to you?
01:58Well, it just means it's a step forward, that's all. The work's never done here, that's for sure, I've said it time and time again.
02:05The reality is, the expectation now is go and get a win again, go and win again, go and win again,
02:10so that's the mentality we've got to show is we just park that very quickly and we get on with next week,
02:15we get up, building up to the next game. Obviously, it's advantageous to us to get Jared through it,
02:21to get Miko through it, you know, illness and injury. They can only get fitter and sharper, and others out there as well.
02:28I know it's only a one-win, you can't keep your feet on the ground, but how nice was it for you as a player,
02:34just going to the dressing room?
02:36Yeah, to be honest, it's nothing to do with feet on the ground, I wish the feet weren't on the ground,
02:39I wish we'd have won all five, but the reality is it's a tough league. I think it's good for the players,
02:47I think they've earned the right from the previous results, because there's a lot of question marks,
02:51to play in a nervy situation and see the game through properly, like we know we can do,
02:56and find the moments they can win a game. I don't think we've been as far off as people think,
03:01especially the last few performances, but you've got to get things right at both boxes, and I thought we did that today.
03:06Sean, what were the main things you wanted to correct at half-time?
03:11Just the feel of it, it's hard to explain. I always explain to the lads, sometimes in football you wait for someone else to make a difference,
03:19and sometimes they do of course, but if it's a game where no-one's quite making a difference,
03:23then it's got to be a collective. So it's more about that, bringing not just a tactical thing,
03:27it's like a feel to an actual performance, that kind of emotional feel to wear the shirt, to get together,
03:32to play hard, to go and win a game, and I thought there was more edge to our game second half,
03:36and the way they've delivered that was important.
03:38You've obviously been ahead a few times in recent weeks and not been able to close it out a difference today,
03:44so what do you think made the difference this time around?
03:47Well, I think that we debrief games, we speak to them and you learn, that's what you want.
03:52It's not that exact, obviously it's not that easy, does everyone do it?
03:56Showing them ways that we can kill the game off, showing them from keeping your shape,
04:01you know, professional things, and I appreciate that fans want glorious football constantly,
04:06it's hard to deliver that, so I said the professional things to do, just lift it behind them,
04:11ask questions of the opposition, turn the game around and defend resolutely,
04:15so some of the basic principles are what it is, and don't forget to do the absolute basics,
04:19which is head it, kick it and clear your lines, and I thought we did that very well as the game went on.
04:25Sean, how does it feel to have a positive week, both on and off the pitch, because it's been a rarity?
04:31Well, the off the pitch thing is, we don't know whether it's a positive yet,
04:34but there's positive signs, that's for sure, so we'll wait and see on the ongoing situation.
04:39On the pitch is the bit that I can at least try and control, and it's pleasing for the players,
04:44they put a lot of effort in here, we've still got players who are getting totally Premier League fit,
04:48I think they'll benefit from that game today, and the win, so the mentality,
04:52the shifting mentality, we need that, and I think that was important to reinforce the work,
04:57you need to win, that's part of the process, we played well, I thought we played ever so well
05:01at the beginning of last season, and we couldn't find a win, we haven't played as well this season,
05:05although in a couple of games we have, and we couldn't find that win, and then we've done it today,
05:09so it's a strange situation, but that's more or less what I see, is focusing on the pitch,
05:15getting the new players to involve themselves and understand what it is to be here,
05:19and then the older, wiser players to go and deliver that, and I thought Taki's getting stronger again,
05:24I think Jared came in and did well, especially as he hasn't played,
05:27Young excellent I thought with his mentality, I know he's been questioned here, but at the end of the day,
05:31that's why he's made it to where he is in life, on the football pitch and probably off,
05:35with his mentality, and these are all really important markers for players to come through these things
05:41and to grow into what we want here.
05:43And the hope now will be to put a string of wins together?
05:46Yeah, of course, everyone wants that, it's not that easy, but that's the challenge,
05:50you win that one, park it very quickly and we go again.
05:55Did you ask them to do something different in the midfield for the second half to stop Wharton?
06:01Yeah, a lot of it was just getting on the front foot a bit, going a bit higher, going a bit tighter,
06:06we changed it again in the second half and went more like a three, with Manga sitting,
06:11which I thought they'd just got a little 10 minutes where they got a little bit more play,
06:14looked a bit more threatened, I thought that worked pretty well.
06:17And as I said, we saw the game through well.
06:19Like I said, it wasn't all about tactics, of course, you mentioned about tactics,
06:24the structure from the front to the back and back to the front playing out,
06:28but a lot of it is about the feel of performance and I thought the second half, the feel was there,
06:31the energy, the belief in each other to go and make a difference and I was pleased with that.
06:36Any further questions before we take one for the Mondays?
06:40Just to ask about Dwight McNeil's change in position, Sean, what's been the force behind moving him into the Number 10 role?
06:46We know he's got quality, we know his stats and facts from certainly the first season out here were very strong
06:51and he was working hard and couldn't quite find the same moment,
06:54so me and the staff, we spoke about it and could we get him inside?
06:59I think Illy has done well in the wide area to allow us maybe more freedom to move Dwight,
07:04and of course you've got to find a result at the end of the day, you've got to find a win.
07:07So we needed that slight better opening quality, as in finding a pass, finding a finish, finding the delivery
07:14and being higher up the pitch and in the centre of the pitch, in theory anyway,
07:19as long as we can get the ball in there, then that brings him to life more than maybe on the wide.
07:24I think he can do both well and I think he'll mature into that role as he plays there more.
