00:00So you want me to go to college?
00:02College?
00:03Ha!
00:04Barber or clown?
00:05Bart!
00:06Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the stupidest things ever
00:10done or said by the lovable oaf, Homer Simpson.
00:14Don't say revenge.
00:15Don't say revenge.
00:16Uh, revenge?
00:17That's it, I'm getting out of here.
00:22Number 20.
00:23Fighting the World Heavyweight Champion.
00:25And are you man enough to throw a punch should the opportunity arise?
00:28Yes!
00:29Are you man enough to give me a 60% cut?
00:32Yes!
00:33I'll take it.
00:34We know Homer fancies himself a tough guy, but fighting the best boxer in the world?
00:38Come on now.
00:39Moe gets Homer into professional boxing, and his escapades attract the attention of heavyweight
00:44champ Dredrick Tatum.
00:45The fight is enormously hyped in the media, but even Moe knows that this showdown is a
00:50bad, bad idea.
00:52And well, it goes about as well as he expected.
00:55Homer is nearly knocked out by the very first punch, and then he proceeds to stand there
01:00in a daze while Tatum turns his face into a punching bag.
01:04He doesn't land a single blow, and he probably would have died if it wasn't for Moe's
01:10timely intervention.
01:15Number 19.
01:17Shooting a Flare.
01:25The army realizes that they messed up recruiting Homer, so they use him as a guinea pig.
01:30He and a number of other recruits are targeted by the malicious colonel, who hopes to kill
01:34them during a live-fire exercise.
01:37Falsely believing that it's Chinese New Year, Homer decides to celebrate with a flare gun.
01:42He shoots the bright flare into the dark night sky, accidentally exposing his unit's location.
01:48Luckily, the colonel's group were wearing all-night vision goggles, and the flare disrupts
01:52their vision just long enough for Homer and his friends to escape.
01:56He can be pretty smart when he's being stupid.
02:01Number 18.
02:03Not reading the safety manual.
02:07You'd think the safety inspector of a nuclear power plant would have at least read the safety
02:12manual.
02:13You'd think.
02:14When Homer finally goes to work early in one episode, he finds time to clean up his desk
02:18and even cracks into the nuclear reactor safety manual.
02:21Something he should have read when he started the job.
02:25But not only has he not read it, he hasn't taken it out of the plastic wrapping.
02:30The reason for putting it off for so long is even worse.
02:33This is the man keeping the entire town safe from nuclear radiation.
02:43Number 17.
02:44Not understanding Chief Wiggum.
02:53Not offering a bribe on the grounds of moral decency is one thing.
02:56Not offering one because you just don't get the idea is something else entirely.
03:02Homer and Bart take over a rigged ring-toss game at a local carnival, and the booth attracts
03:06the attention of Chief Wiggum.
03:08He threatens to shut the operation down if a bribe is not offered, and he tries everything
03:12in his power to get Homer to understand this.
03:15At one point, he calls out his own wink and refers to a Mr. Bribe while asking for the
03:21money.
03:22But Homer just doesn't get it, and Wiggum shutters the game after losing his patience.
03:38Number 16.
03:39Winking into the phone.
03:47Homer proves to be a bad football coach, and his behavior causes Bart to quit the team.
03:53This infuriates Homer, who decides to teach Bart a lesson about quitting.
03:57He calls up Mr. Burns to tell him he's resigning, but immediately winks into the handset, hoping
04:02that Burns catches on and plays along with his act.
04:05But as Marge very patiently points out, Burns has no way to catch on to what Homer is trying
04:12to do.
04:13To his credit, Homer immediately realizes his mistake, but for some reason he hangs
04:17up in a panic rather than explain the situation to Burns.
04:25Number 15.
04:26Batman to the rescue.
04:32Written by Conan O'Brien, Marge vs. the Monorail is often considered one of the show's best
04:38episodes.
04:39It's packed with iconic lines, brilliant visual gags, and clever references, including
04:44a Batman spoof where Burns and Smithers escape from Town Hall.
04:48Batman is referenced again when Marge brings engineer Sebastian Cobb to Springfield.
04:53She and Cobb manage to patch through to Homer, who is trapped on the runaway monorail.
04:57With Marge letting Homer know help is available, should have probably given him a few more
05:11guesses there, but it is kind of adorable that he immediately thinks of the superhero.
05:16Number 14.
05:18Wasting is three questions.
05:28In this classic episode from season 5, Homer gets Apu fired from the Quickie Mart after
05:33the latter sold him bad ham.
05:35But after Apu does all he can to right his wrong, Homer tries to get Apu his job back.
05:40They both travel to the Himalayas and meet the benevolent president and CEO of the Quickie
05:45Mart franchise.
05:46Like a genie, the president allows them to ask three questions.
05:50Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, Homer quickly wastes all three questions with some
05:55truly inept queries.
05:57Homer and Apu are swiftly booted from the building and, after all that, Homer still
06:02doesn't believe that he was the head of Quickie Mart.
06:10Number 13.
06:11Calling a Grand Piano Homer isn't one to care about other people.
06:19And if that means tearing up the roads of Springfield so he can have a grand piano,
06:23then so be it.
06:24Marge mentions that Main Street is in horrible condition, owing mainly to people driving
06:29with winter chains and carrying too much weight in their cars.
06:33Well, that seems like a pretty pointed comment.
06:36Cut to Homer driving down Main Street with winter chains and a grand piano strapped to
06:41the roof.
06:42How he got that up there, we have no idea.
06:45The chained tires rip terrible divots in the road and Homer proudly comments on the chunks
06:49of pavement shooting from his car.
06:51This is why Springfield can't have nice things.
06:59Number 12.
07:00Sticking Fire Into His Ears Homer is no stranger to sticking foreign objects
07:12inside his body.
07:13And sometimes those objects are on fire.
07:16Lisa makes some endearing comments about a man on the TV and Homer walks into the room
07:21claiming that his ears are burning.
07:23This is a phrase typically used by one when they feel others are talking about them.
07:28But in this case, Homer means it literally.
07:30His ears are actually burning because he stuck a flaming Q-tip in them.
07:40This ridiculous statement is met by a puff of smoke emerging from his ear, just to really
07:45drive home the utter stupidity.
07:47Oh Marge, we see you girl.
07:49Number 11.
07:50SMRT As clever as the writers are, some of the
07:56most genius lines can actually be accredited to the talented voice actors.
08:02And sometimes even those aren't intentional.
08:05The Nuclear Regulatory Commission forces Homer to attend college and study nuclear physics.
08:11He is accepted into Springfield University thanks to Mr. Burns and, to celebrate, he
08:16sets his high school diploma on fire.
08:19He then sings a catchy little jingle about being smart, while misspelling the word smart.
08:31Apparently this was a genuine mistake from voice actor Dan Castellaneta.
08:35But it was kept in for being very Homer-esque.
08:40Number 10.
08:41Jumping Springfield Gorge Heralded as one of the best episodes of the
08:53early seasons, Bart the Daredevil is largely remembered for its iconic ending.
08:58Which just so happens to be one of Homer's dumbest moments.
09:02Bart decides to jump the Springfield Gorge on a skateboard, having been inspired by Daredevil
09:07Lance Murdock.
09:08To Homer's credit, he does try dissuading Bart from the reckless stunt.
09:13But then, to teach him a lesson, he purposely puts himself in the exact same situation.
09:19Fighting stupidity with stupidity.
09:22Classic Homer.
09:23He's successful in stopping Bart, but unsuccessful in preventing his own stunt.
09:27The skateboard rolls away, Homer is dragged along with it, and the rest is Simpsons history.
09:34Number 9.
09:35Ruining the Rafting Trip When Bart joins the junior campers, both he
09:46and Homer go on a father-son rafting trip and share the structure with Ned and Rod.
09:51What would have been a fun day out quickly turns into a living nightmare thanks to Homer's
09:55total ineptitude.
09:56First, he folds the map into a hat, which quickly blows away.
10:01He then commits a flurry of other asinine acts, like using their water to wash his socks,
10:07eating all their rations, riding with the current, and shooting down the rescue plane.
10:12To his credit, Homer ends up saving the group by bringing them to an oil rig.
10:16But man, talk about incompetence.
10:23Number 8.
10:26Marge is Pregnant This episode contains what could be the most
10:38touching ending in Simpsons history, and also one of Homer's most dim-witted moments.
10:44It's largely told through a flashback, showing how Marge became pregnant with Maggie.
10:49Patty and Selma break the news to Springfield, and it seems like everyone in town starts
10:53congratulating Homer.
10:54Naturally, he doesn't get it.
10:57Instead, he thinks they're congratulating him on getting a job at the bowling alley.
11:00Even the most obvious of tells, like Marge's baby shower and Moe directly mentioning the
11:06pregnancy, go completely over his head.
11:08Funnily enough, it's only when Maude actually does congratulate him on his new job that
11:14Homer finally makes the connection.
11:22Number 7.
11:23Using Plutonium to Grow Crops The Simpsons move to Homer's old farmhouse
11:33in order to avoid a southern colonel who wishes to duel Homer.
11:37The patriarch is looking to do some farming, but finds that the land is in poor condition.
11:42His solution?
11:43Call Lenny, get ahold of some plutonium, and stick the dangerous element in the ground.
11:48Surprisingly, this works, and by crossbreeding tomato and tobacco seeds, he creates the highly
11:54addictive, Tamaco.
11:55The fact that he used plutonium to farm is bad enough.
11:59The fact that he sold these radioactive fruits is just inexcusable.
12:03But hey, this is Homer we're talking about.
12:14Number 6.
12:15The Tiger Repelling Rock Lisa tries teaching her father a lesson about
12:28logical fallacies, and frankly, we don't know why she even bothers.
12:33A bear is spotted in Springfield, and to deter future attacks, Mayor Quimby stations a bear
12:39patrol in the city.
12:40No more bears are spotted, leaving Homer to conclude that the patrol is working.
12:45Lisa is quick to point out the fallacy, using a random rock on the ground to illustrate
12:49her point.
12:50Of course, the argument goes way over Homer's head, and he takes what Lisa is saying at
12:54face value.
12:55Guess who just became the proud owner of this, here, tiger-repelling rock?
13:08Number 5.
13:09Not Getting His New Name
13:18Giving Homer a new name was never going to end well.
13:21In an episode parodying Cape Fear, the Simpsons join Witness Protection to avoid sideshow
13:26Bob who has been released from prison.
13:28The program's agents tell Homer that he will now be going by Homer Thompson, and they
13:33give him a little practice run to try the new name out.
13:36He immediately fails to understand, completely ignoring the agents' calls for Mr. Thompson.
13:41After what seems like hours, they try something even simpler.
13:45All Homer has to do is smile and nod, but still, nothing.
13:50Homer's famous response is one of the greatest one-liners in the show's history.
14:01Number 4.
14:03Setting Cereal on Fire
14:08Only Homer Simpson can find a way to set cereal on fire.
14:11He becomes Mr. Burns' new assistant, and one of his many duties is making Burns his
14:17breakfast.
14:18He first tries some type of bizarre kebab, but he continuously sets it on fire.
14:22Those are certainly his own fault and lack of sense, especially that microwave bit.
14:27But fine, let's try something simpler.
14:30Not simple enough, apparently, but it does make for a fantastic visual gag.
14:35We'll commend him here, coffee and donuts seem like the right next course of action.
14:39Unfortunately, Mr. Burns isn't too thrilled about it.
14:46Number 3.
14:47Not Knowing What a Spoon Is
14:57This episode from season 3 does a lot of fun things with Homer's intelligence.
15:01Or lack thereof.
15:03When Lisa starts fearing for her father's health, Marge buys him a weight loss tape.
15:07But the company instead replaces it with a tape that improves vocabulary.
15:11Homer listens to it while he falls asleep and he quickly develops a scholarly lexicon.
15:16But he discovers that he isn't losing weight, so the tapes are thrown in the garbage.
15:21His vocabulary quickly returns to normal, and that includes losing the word for spoon.
15:26It's just a lucky thing Marge is able to decipher the term, metal dealy.
15:39Number 2.
15:40Causing a Nuclear Meltdown
15:47The Nuclear Regulatory Commission pays a visit to the power plant and places Homer inside
15:52of their van, which contains a simulated workstation.
15:55The goal of the station is to test the competence of the safety inspectors.
15:59Well, we all see where this is going.
16:02A man informs Homer that he is not in any real danger and the van obviously has no nuclear
16:08material inside of it.
16:09Despite this, Homer randomly presses a number of buttons and somehow causes a meltdown.
16:15A large amount of radiation is released and the van gets so radioactive that it melts
16:20into the parking lot.
16:21it to Homer to somehow break the very laws of quantum physics.

16:45Number 1.
16:46Giving Himself Brain Damage
16:54Homer's stupidity can be traced to many things.
16:58Maybe it was the 16 crayons he stuck up his nose as a child.
17:01Or maybe it's this story.
17:03Homer tells it to Bart, explaining that when he was a child, he desperately wanted a catcher's
17:08mitt.
17:09Unfortunately, Grandpa wouldn't get it for him.
17:11So Homer held his breath in an act of defiance.
17:14He held it for so long that he eventually passed out and hit his head on a coffee table,
17:19giving himself irreversible brain damage.
17:21It explains so much.
17:23Then again, he had to be pretty dumb to even do that in the first place, so who knows?
17:28Maybe he's just born that way.
17:33What's your favorite dumb Homer moment?
