Express & Star senior reporter James Vukmirovic joins fundraiser Manny Singh Kang and pupils from Long Knowle school on a lap around Molineux as Manny continues his 48-hour fundraiser
Transcript
00:00Morning Manny, how are you doing? I've got some helpers. You clearly have. How was last
00:17night then? Oh it was great, it rained all night, 12 hours of holding my brolly, so I'm
00:22grateful that the sun's out there. We've got 18 hours coming up to 112,000 steps and a lap
00:3180, 80 kilometres. And this is Long Knoll Primary School, a school that I've done a bit of a project
00:39with for my workplace Network Rail, and they've just surprised me and come out today, year six,
00:44to walk with me. So it's been amazing, you know, what a lift it is to see them. Just having that
00:50support, plus I've seen Warrinda's been down as well. You've had a message online from Susie Perry?
00:54Yeah, and Beverley Knight's niece turned up at half past two with a message off her. She came
01:00straight from the concert at Cardiff and, you know, we had a complete stranger turn up at four o'clock
01:06in the morning with two cups of tea. You know, it's been amazing, the support throughout the
01:11night and yesterday as you saw, and you see today, so it's the adrenaline, you know, that I need and
01:17we keep going. We've got more than 12 hours done, so how are the legs feeling right now?
01:22They're okay, they're okay. They're not going to be perfect, but they're okay, you know.
01:25So let's get everyone in at this point. Okay, get in everyone, get in.
01:33Yep, everyone, big cheer.
01:39Hey, how many of you are going to be walking with him through the night?
01:41That's on camera, you realise that, right?
01:55So Manny, I'll do a lap with you, let's keep walking. Let's go.
02:01Come on people.
02:04Do you ever sort of stop and think, I'm Manny from Wolverhampton, what am I doing?
02:09All the time, mate. I've just got one.
02:23I guarantee I'm going to walk into something at this point.
02:27I'll tell you what, you go inside, it's a lot easier.
02:35So far, what have been the hard bits?
02:39Yeah, the rain was, because you had to hold a brolly like this, you know, you could wear all
02:43the waterproofs, if it rains like it did last night, you'll get wet, so we had a brolly and
02:49it's so hard to keep the arm in that position, and when it cleared up, it was such a relief.
02:53Kevin at the back has been with me all night, he's just come back now, so I had support.
03:08Go Manny go! Go Manny go! Go Manny go! Go Manny go! Go Manny go! Go Manny go!
03:19We need him, we need him in the South Bank.
03:29So you can see, Meissen Kang, more than 12 hours in, more than 80 kilometres.
03:34Go Manny go! Go Manny go! Go Manny go! Go Manny go! Go Manny go! Go Manny go! Go Manny go!
03:41There's the horses with us all the way around here.
03:44This is what sponsorship is all about, this is what it's worth doing, to see someone like this,
03:49do this, get the sponsorship he's getting, and get the love he's getting for the people as well.
04:01You could have imagined these doing this with them on their way to Newcastle,
04:04couldn't you? Unreal, honestly, this is just unreal, you know, when you need a lift,
04:09when you're flagging a little bit, this is like better than any energy drink, you know, it's just
04:14unreal, and these are the kids of our future, you know, we want to inspire them to do
04:19these types of things when they're older. So while we're here Manny, let's talk about the course,
04:24let's talk about the walk around, because we're going around St Jack Hayward Way right now,
04:31towards the outside of the St Paul's stand, so has that been the hardest bit? Yeah, it's a little
04:35bit of an incline there, but you know, it's okay, it's not too bad, and you know, but it's for the
04:41cause, dementia UK, you know, it's an illness now, affects so many people, even had a guy from
04:49Brighton turned up yesterday, who only lost his loved one just seven days ago, but he wanted to
04:55be here in her memory, and you know, and these people need help, they need expertise help,
05:01so that's what Dementia UK supply. These are really loud! They really are!
05:14Keep going!
05:15Let's give you an idea of the route that we're taking, to the left you've got Asda, to the right
05:21you've got the St Ancolish stand, with the eponymous statue outside, St Paul's stand there,
05:30St Paul's University, so the view's not exactly boring is it? No, I think I know every brick,
05:39I know, I think I know every brick, you know, I've counted the bollards, I know all the stanchions
05:47and the lampposts. That's the thing, how have you been keeping yourself entertained? Just these
05:51people keep turning up, so I haven't had time to, you know, I've just been talking, and
05:58point of the world's right with lots of different people, and lots of positivity shown by so many.
06:04Obviously lots of people talking about wolves at the moment as well. Yeah, I think, you know what,
06:07we haven't really spoke about the football that much, and this is, this shows you what
06:12football clubs can do, which is more than football, and this is the best result isn't it?
06:19They're not getting tired are they? No, they're not. I'm getting tired, I've only been doing this
06:24for a couple of minutes. Yeah, just a sign, Madison can't be doing this all night, and he's
06:29going to be doing this over tonight, all the way until 4 30 tomorrow, when he'll get to,
06:34Billy Wright statue. Yes, yeah, Billy Wright statue, half past four, so. Just in time to see
06:41wolves, maybe, get a result against Liverpool. That's it, nothing's, you know, if the players
06:45are watching, nothing's impossible, you know, hard work, you know, giving everything, letting
06:52out, then you can do these things.
06:56Go Manny, go! Go Manny, go! Go Manny, go!
07:01Where shall I go? Where do you want me to go?
07:05Go Manny, go! Go Manny, go! Go Manny, go! Go Manny, go!
07:14Here we go, I mean last night I got, oh, here we go.
07:19The legend, Beverly Knott.
07:24Hey, it's Bev, listen, I know you're out there, walking around and around and around,
07:29Molly New, and you are one of the most generous and big-hearted souls that I know, and I am
07:38so proud of you for doing this, people adore you at the Wolves, keep going, we're right
07:45with you, we will donate, share everything, you're just brilliant Manny, keep it up, and
07:52lots of love.
07:54What are your Molly New's angels like?
07:56There you go, I mean, you know, she just finished a concert in Cardiff, she recorded that, sent
08:01it with her niece at half past two this morning, amazing event.
08:06Absolutely, I'm going to step off actually.
08:08You turned up at the right time, didn't you?
08:17I did, yeah.
08:19One more, are we doing one more lap, okay, come on, let's go.
08:25I want to do one more lap.
08:27How are you guys finding this right now then?
08:29Nothing.
08:3180 laps.
08:3380 laps?
08:35Okay, I'll do it.
08:37So, obviously there's the physical toll that this is taking, what's the sort of mental
08:45toll right now?
08:47I think the mental side is getting a real boost all the time, it's being fed with stuff
08:54like this, you know, so mentally I'm quite high, I feel great.
08:58People you don't even know who are just coming out and saying Manny, the bloke yesterday
09:02in the wolf shirt who said, I've never met him but I absolutely love him.
09:05There was a girl who turned up at four o'clock this morning, two cups of tea, I don't know
09:10who she is, four o'clock this morning she's there with two hot cups of tea and it's amazing
09:15that people are inspired to do that.
09:17The fact you're even keeping active on social media about it as well.
09:21Well, yeah, it gives me something to do I think.
09:25I mean obviously it's like a non-stop walk, how many times have you had to stop for walking?
09:30Well, I've sorted my feet out and we've stopped obviously to go to the toilet and stuff and
09:36pretty much I've been eating on the go so yeah, it is what it is.
09:41You're burning it off to be fair.
09:43Well, I have now gone past 9,700 calories.
09:49Wow, that's like the average marathon runner isn't it?
09:53Yeah, yeah.
09:55So yesterday we spoke about, you didn't have a specific target in mind but now you've seen
10:00the sort of the kilometers you've done, what do you think could be achievable?
10:04I don't know to be honest because we're coming up to like 80 kilometers, we're not even halfway,
10:10so it could be a quarter of a million steps, something like that, I don't know.
10:15Just try and think what 8,000 kilometers is, that's halfway around the world?
10:1980 kilometers.
10:2180 kilometers?
10:24So, you know, probably double that.
10:27But obviously we'll probably slow down a little bit with fatigue but
10:31it's about keep going and just up one front in front of the other.
10:36Of course, if we look behind you, you've got the wonderful view of Molyneux right now.
10:41And again, you know, that's the inspiring bit, the fact that you've got this
10:45magnificent stadium behind you as well.
10:47And Wolverhampton, you know, hasn't got many attractions but this is our main one.
10:53It's right in the center of our city, which is quite unique for a football stadium these days.
10:58And, you know, plays a big part in people's well-being, even though the team are not
11:04doing as great as they should be doing.
11:07But this type of stuff, look at it, people are happy and people are uplifted
11:11and people are contributing, donating.
11:13That's not a bad sign either, is it? The Molyneux Hotel.
11:16Or the City Archives, it's now known.
11:20And as you can see, it's not a flat route.
11:24I think I mentioned it yesterday, the idea it's undulating, that's the word I use.
11:29To tell you the truth, if you were just walking around a flat surface all day,
11:33it would get boring, wouldn't it?
11:35I don't know.
11:37I'll ask you at four o'clock tomorrow and see how you're feeling.
11:42Oh.
11:46Obviously, to the left we see the traffic passing by.
11:50People who are just going about their business.
11:52But every now and again they'll see this man with a long silver beard
11:56and a yellow turban and an orange jacket.
12:00Well, old gold, we'll say old gold because it's Wolverhampton.
12:04And putting in the miles.
12:06That's right.
12:07Putting in the kilometers that were going to be technical.
12:09Technical, yeah.
12:15Archives, not archives.
12:18Archives.
12:23So you pronounce it however you want to pronounce it?
12:25Yeah, you go, Chris.
12:27Is it archives?
12:28It is.
12:29Well, I thought it was archives.
12:31It's the history of our city, isn't it?
12:33All the old records of the people who lived here,
12:36of the people who passed away,
12:39the people who were the leaders, all the history.
12:52It's okay, man.
12:53I'll get a quick picture of you next to the statue with these guys.
12:56Come on, Johnny!
13:04Oh, loads.
13:13Can you see the view?
13:15What's up, guys?
13:20If you look there, you can see the wonderful sights
13:23of the Billy Wright stand and Molyneux Stadium
13:26as we go past the end of another lap.
13:29At the end of this, we'll get a quick picture with Manny and the group,
13:32and then I shall leave him to get on his way.
13:34Thank you, man.
13:35Thank you, everybody who's donated and shared.
13:37It's been incredible.
13:38I think a couple of thousand pounds has been added since yesterday,
13:43which is like, you know, wow.
13:46I wish I could thank people, you know, personally, each person.
13:49You can do that right now.
13:50Yeah, thank you, everybody who's donated,
13:52everybody that's given, everybody that's shared,
13:55everybody that's supported and turned out.
13:57You know, big hugs to all of you.
14:03I don't think there's much more that needs to be said there.
14:05Manny Sinkang, this guy, I can't even begin to imagine
14:08what this guy is going through right now, the physical toll, but...
14:11Stop down at the bottom! Stop at the bottom!
14:14We'll do the little bit of organised bit now,
14:16but I hope you've enjoyed this lap around Molyneux.
14:18Manny Sinkang, what a man.
