Three lanes have been closed on the M6 southbound between junctions 31 (Samlesbury) and 30 (Blacow Bridge) this afternoon (September 26).
National Highways said the closure was due to a collision and delays of 70 minutes have been building in the area.
Traffic officers have been called to clear the scene, with normal traffic conditions expected between 7.30pm and 7.45pm.
Lane three reopened at around 4.35pm, but six miles of congestion remains in the area.
Traffic maps also show delays are building on the M55 and M61 as motorists attempt to join M6.
