00:00One of the biggest developments in Peterborough right now is the proposed new station quarter,
00:05the station quarter being the area surrounding the city's railway station.
00:10The City Council is working with partners, the Cambridge and Peterborough Combined Authority,
00:14LNER and National Rail on a major transformation project of the area which has been planned
00:19to revitalise it and improve better connectivity and accessibility.
00:24The project is being funded by the government via a £47.8 million grant to improve the
00:30area.
00:31Currently, the council is consulting on plans and is seeking residents' views on what
00:35they would like to see in the new station quarter.
00:39There are many elements to the new station quarter, these include an eastern entrance
00:43to the railway station.
00:44This has been planned to improve the existing station building, to deliver a new station
00:49square allowing for easier onward journeys and better connecting rail and other travel
00:53modes.
00:54So, to do this, the plans would be to relocate the current taxi and drop-off area within
00:59the current car park to free up space in front of the station for the new station square.
01:04Also, refurbishing and extending the existing station building for a better customer experience
01:09through the station, and as well as reconfiguring the gate line and relocation of the stairs
01:14to the eastern footbridge on the train tracks to help address passenger congestion on platform
01:191 and provide passengers with a better station experience.
01:22There would also be a new western entrance to the station, reducing vehicle and pedestrian
01:27congestion and decreasing the congestion across Crescent Bridge to help reduce emissions
01:31and improve air quality.
01:33There would also be a suitable new junction infrastructure for the entrance with drop-off
01:36points and a multi-storey car park.
01:38The package of works aims to improve all types of connections between the city centre and
01:43the station.
01:44The station is currently approximately 10 minutes walk distance from the city centre,
01:47but currently the route is not easy or welcoming for people to navigate through a maze of paths
01:51and dark underpasses and pedestrian bridges.
01:54In order to improve this, proposals will make the routes and paths more accessible.
01:59This will be done by filling in one of the underpasses at Queensgate Roundabout to provide
02:03a level crossing between the station and Cowgate.
02:06A new station square and public open space will also help to create a better link between
02:11the station and the city centre.
02:15A long-running public consultation has been open since August and it comes to an end on
02:19Friday 27th September, which is your final chance to view the plans on the council website
02:24and give your views on what you would like to see in the station quarter and give your
02:28views on the current plans.
