00:00We, the doctors, come to make these children sick
00:04through injections and so on.
00:07But you come, you come to heal them emotionally.
00:16The one with us now is Iskandar Shah Ismail.
00:21He has been entertaining the younger siblings at the hospital for more than 20 years.
00:26And the name of the glamour is Dr. Bubbles.
00:30One of the things I like to do is to play with the children.
00:34That's how I got the name Dr. Bubbles.
00:37Clown Hospital may be different from Birthday Party Clown or Circus Clown
00:42because we care for children who are suffering from chronic and critical illness.
00:49And most of them have been in the hospital for a long time.
00:53I remember 20 years ago,
00:57I saw a sick child lying on the floor.
01:00He wouldn't have the opportunity to go out like other friends.
01:04And at that time, I said to myself,
01:06how can I entertain this child who won't be able to go out,
01:11who will stay in the hospital for a long time.
01:14And this question haunted me.
01:16One day, I read an article about the Clown Doctors Program in Europe.
01:22And since then, I started to look for opportunities to become a clown hospital.
01:26That's what brought me to travel far to America, to Europe,
01:32to learn from the Clown Doctors Programs that are well-known in the world,
01:37and try to bring the knowledge back to Malaysia
01:40and train the potential candidates to become a good clown hospital.
01:46The approach is different,
01:47where we use the concept of clown theatre more.
01:52We use a lot of music, physical comedy, slapstick,
01:57falling, being hit by a door.
02:03We go from bed to bed.
02:05Our performances must be spontaneous.
02:08We have to take into account the age, background, what illness,
02:13adjust our performances based on the condition of the patient.
02:16We received an invitation to go to Selayang Hospital.
02:20The expert doctor there told us this.
02:23He said,
02:24we, the doctors, came to make these children sick,
02:29through injections and so on.
02:32But you came to cure them emotionally.
02:38Baim is a pediatrician
02:42who suffers from leukemia at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
02:46At first, we came to entertain him.
02:49Baim said,
02:52there were three clowns in this room.
02:55At that time, there were only two people.
02:58I was with my partner, Dr. Shai.
03:00We were looking around, where is the third one?
03:03Suddenly, I was the third one.
03:05We tried to make his dream come true
03:09to become a clown through injections.
03:12So after that,
03:14somehow his health deteriorated.
03:17We came to his house on his request.
03:21One of Baim's requests at that time,
03:23he wanted to play hide-and-seek.
03:24He invited us to go out to the corridor in the orphanage.
03:28And we played.
03:37For more than 20 years,
03:39he spent time every week
03:41to entertain children's illnesses in the hospital.
03:44And this is the current fighter
03:46that we should celebrate
03:48because this is Malaysia.
03:50This is us.
