00:00Hi everyone, welcome out to a book reading, today's book that I'm going to read to you
00:15and it's called The Puppy Who Went to School, written by Gail Herman, illustrated by Bettina
00:30Hogan.
00:31Here's what it looks like, the front, it's got a cute little puppy on the front cover.
00:45Here's the side, and here's the back.
01:04Wags was Ben's puppy.
01:15Everything Ben did, Wags did too.
01:21He went swimming and did the dog paddle, he had lunch when Ben had lunch, he even went
01:30to baseball games where he had his own special seat, they went everywhere together.
01:48That's why Wags just couldn't understand it when one morning Ben ate his breakfast, walked
01:59out the door, and got on a bright yellow bus leaving him behind, bye Wags, I'm going
02:08to school, called Ben, waving from the bus window.
02:15Wags was so surprised there was only one thing for him to do, before the bus was out of sight,
02:25Wags went chasing after it, by the time the bus stopped and Wags caught up with it, all
02:41the children had gone off and gone into school, Wags bounded up the steps behind them, woof
02:52he barked, inside, down the long hallway, he saw a pair of sneakers, was that Ben?
03:11Wags started toward the sneakers, suddenly he heard a bell ring, in a moment there were
03:21sneakers and legs everywhere, rushing all around him, Wags couldn't see that pair of
03:29sneakers anymore, he couldn't see much of anything so he followed the crowd, the bell
03:46rang again, ring, all the children hurried into their classrooms, Wags went into a classroom
03:54too, maybe Ben was there, a group of children were sitting on the floor in a circle, good
04:02morning children, the teacher was saying, let's go around the circle and tell our names,
04:10I'm Ben, said a girl with pigtails, I'm John, said a boy with freckles, woof woof, said Wags,
04:17it's a puppy, there's a puppy in our class, the children shouted, here boy, they called and rushed
04:35to pet him, Wags rolled over so they could scratch his tummy, he wagged his tail happily,
04:42but Ben wasn't there, and soon Wags went on his way, goodbye puppy, the children said, next Wags
04:53padded into the art room, Ben wasn't there either, but Wags smelled something interesting, paint,
05:02the children were finger painting, Wags crept closer to get a better sniff, wagging his tail
05:09with excitement, oops, he knocked over a jar of blue paint, oops, he knocked over a jar of red
05:18paint, oops, indeed, it's a puppy, shouted the children, Wags jumped up on the table,
05:34stomp, stomp, stomp, Wags left red and blue paw prints all over the paper, woof, Wags barked at
05:44his picture, all the children crowded around Wags, these paw paintings, the children said to
05:53the teacher, can you make another picture, but the teacher shook her head, come on puppy, she said,
06:00shooing Wags into the hallway, go back home where you belong, well that's rude, all he was doing
06:10was finger painting, nothing against that, but Wags couldn't go home yet, he ran through the
06:23school searching for Ben, no running in the hall please, called the principal as Wags skidded past
06:31her door, then Wags noticed a water fountain, all that running had made him thirsty, he needed a
06:39drink, here doggy, I'll help you, said a girl who was in the hallway, she lifted Wags up to the
06:47fountain and pressed the button, whoosh, the water sprouted up and Wags laughed at it happily, just
06:56then the principal poked her head around the corner, I thought that was a dog, she said,
07:10but before the principal could come any closer, Wags ran off down the hall, following his nose
07:17to the school cafeteria, what a wonderful smell he smelled there, Wags jumped onto an empty seat
07:26and put his paw on the table, woof, he barked, hey there's a dog here, shouted a boy, and he looks
07:36hungry, he can have my egg salad sandwich, said one girl, he can have my tuna fish, said another
07:44girl, here's a banana, try some lettuce, bologna, dog like bologna, all the children came over to
07:52give Wags their lunches, I think that's very sweet that the kids are doing that for him,
08:05suddenly the principal rushed in, is that dog still in school, she asked,
08:11the children reached for Wags but Wags jumped through their outstretched arms around the
08:17leftover food and smack into a stack of trays, whoops, everything clattered to the floor with
08:24a great bang, catch him, cried the principal, catch that dog, I don't know why he hasn't really done
08:33anything wrong, so why catch him, all he's doing is looking for his owner,
08:45Wags raced out into the hallway with the children and the principal close behind him,
08:51just then he saw a closet filled with buckets and brooms, Wags slipped inside and hid behind a mop,
08:59everyone rushed past for the moment Wags was safe, then the door opened, it was the school
09:06janitor, now where is that mop, he said aloud, Wags blinked in the bright light,
09:12a second later he burst out of the closet, scattering moths and brooms as he speeded away,
09:19there he is, shouted a boy and soon Wags was surrounded,
09:33but then Wags felt someone lift him up, someone wearing sneakers that looked awfully familiar,
09:50it was Ben, Wags, what are you doing in school, cried Ben, hugging him close,
09:57woof, woof, said Wags, the principal let Ben take Wags back to his classroom for the rest of the
10:04day and before anyone knew it, it was time to go home, after everyone said goodbye, the principal
10:12walked Ben and Wags to the bus stop, there's one extra passenger today, she told the driver,
10:27and a few minutes later, the two friends were on their way home from school together,
10:35and the end, the back of it says, Wags is Ben's puppy, anywhere Ben goes, Wags goes too,
10:52so when it's time for Ben to go to school, guess who's falling right behind, children will delight
