00:00Welcome to The Advantage. Today we're talking about LeBron James and Tyrese Halliburton
00:06and exactly how they got buckets in the end season tournament.
00:10Alright, this is very much an IQ video and we're diving deep into how those buckets came about.
00:15Because this show is called The Advantage, we don't just play the game, we think the game.
00:21It's all about learning players' advantages, how to stop it, and how to utilize it.
00:27So let's go ahead and kick it off with Tyrese Halliburton. What are his advantages?
00:31Well, he can shoot it. He's a sniper for real. Shot kind of wonky, but he can shoot it.
00:37Alright. Number two, he can pass it. Point guard for real.
00:42Number three, he got a nice little handle on him. Point guard for real.
00:47Number four, he's patient. He's patient.
00:54Which, as young as he is, for a lot of guys in the league, just a lot of players period, patience is a virtue.
01:02Five, IQ. Dude is actually really smart if you pay attention.
01:08The biggest aspect that is on the scouting report for other teams is that he can shoot it.
01:13So throughout the whole game, they're sitting there playing a drop coverage.
01:17So drop coverage is basically this, where you see Brooke Lopez playing in that drop position.
01:24He's not hugging up on anybody. He's playing low.
01:29So if they come off of that screen, he's there to pick up Halliburton off the screen,
01:34but also be able to get back to his man in the paint.
01:38And the other defender is trying to come over the screen and stay with Halliburton on his hip.
01:45So this is what we call a lock and trail.
01:48So we lock onto that hip and then we trail over the screen. Lock and trail.
01:54The whole purpose of drop coverage is to make sure that they can't shoot it off the screen.
02:00They can't pull to Stephen Curry and pull up, even though Stephen Curry would still pull up.
02:05So this is the game plan for the Bucs. Clearly.
02:08Because they did it the whole entire game. They didn't switch it up.
02:11I want you guys to pay attention to two things.
02:15First thing is my corner shooters.
02:18Usually when you're coming off of a screen, once your feet hit the paint, you hit a corner shooter.
02:26And those shooters have to be respectable.
02:29So obviously those shooters in the corners are respectable because the Bucs are playing tight on them.
02:34So you can't drive and kick.
02:36And the second thing I want you guys to pay attention to is the roller.
02:39Because now it all comes down to the two man game.
02:42What is the person with the ball going to do and what is my roller going to do?
02:47So there's two things that always happen for the roller.
02:49The roller either slip the screen right away to force them to make a decision.
02:56So now Brooke Lopez has to make a decision.
02:59Am I going to guard the ball or am I going to guard my mans?
03:03That rotation has to be crisp.
03:06You can't just stand there and hesitate.
03:09Because he's slipping that screen so fast and heading straight to the rim, I have to hurry up and get back.
03:14You see what's happening.
03:16And the second thing that will happen, Tyrese will come off the screen.
03:21Keep the defender on his hip.
03:24Now the roller would space out.
03:30And here's what happens when you don't stick to the plan, Damian Lillard.
03:36Damian Lillard didn't go over the screen.
03:39He didn't do a lock and trail.
03:40He went under the screen not once, but twice.
03:43And guess what Halliburton gets to do?
03:46He got to utilize his advantage.
03:48Shooting it.
03:50So now you got to live with it, right?
03:52The other thing I also want to point out is that when the Bucs created this game plan,
03:58the drop coverage is like, yo, we are going to live with them not shooting threes.
04:04We are going to live with them trying to score points in the paint.
04:08We good with that.
04:10That's the game plan.
04:11But the Pacers did it so effectively that it's just like, yo, you take what you can get.
04:19Because once again, we're not just shooters.
04:22We're ball players.
04:23We can do more than just shoot the ball.
04:24We got the layup package on lock.
04:26We got the passing on lock.
04:27So that's the advantage to having multiple advantages.
04:31And by the way, I've gotten a B in workouts with Tyrese Halliburton.
04:34He's really like that.
04:36Like his shot is funky, but he's really like that.
04:39Now for my man with the plan, LeBron James.
04:43Okay, guys, I was at this game, all right?
04:45And when I say LeBron was really like that, like, come on.
04:50So what is LeBron's advantage?
04:52Well, first of all, he's big, right?
04:55Really, when he was coming through the paint, it's really like a freight train.
04:58Y'all see it on TV, but if you've never gotten to see him in person, he's really like, he's fast.
05:06And he's big.
05:07Move out the way on some ludicrous move.
05:11Get out the way.
05:13And of course, the game plan most of the time will always be pack in the paint.
05:17Because what would you rather have?
05:20Would you rather have LeBron shooting threes?
05:24Or would you rather have LeBron in the paint?
05:29Once again, he's a freight train.
05:31And no offense, I don't care how good LeBron shot is getting, I want LeBron shooting threes.
05:36Because we playing percentages here.
05:38We not just playing, you know, the percentages say you get this many points in the paint.
05:44And you get this many points from the three.
05:47And the team as a whole doesn't shoot great from three anyway, right?
05:52And you've got AD down there.
05:53So it's like we're going to pack in the paint as much as possible.
05:56And the game plan also was they're not trying to guard LeBron too far from the three-point line.
06:03So kind of like the game plan, how it usually is for Jokic, give him a late contest.
06:09All right.
06:10So it's kind of like a hesitation when you see people just standing there like a defender standing there.
06:14And they're not because it's like LeBron can decide to get the ball.
06:19You know how you look at the ball for a second.
06:21And then you just drive.
06:22Or he can look at the ball and decide he want to shoot it.
06:26Because when he shoot it, he'll shoot like a little leaner, a little fadeaway.
06:29Right?
06:30So it's harder to block anyway.
06:32So we're not going to guard you too far out from the three-point line.
06:35Right?
06:36And we're going to give you a late contest every time.
06:38The problem is that night LeBron took advantage of it.
06:41He hit three threes in a row.
06:43My man was balling.
06:45And there were two instances of how he was scoring his threes.
06:48So he would score it off a fast break where he just come down, shoot it in your face.
06:52Because it's a late contest anyway.
06:54Or he would score it off the rotation.
06:56All right.
06:57So once the defense has rotated, we swing, swing, pick and roll, swing.
07:01Right?
07:02The defense has rotated two or three times.
07:04Now I get a kind of late contest on top of the hesitation of the contest that you're doing anyway.
07:11I'm going to shoot it in your face.
07:14And of course, last but not least, the pick and roll worked very well for LeBron.
07:19You know, it was times where he'll come off that screen.
07:22And it's like, yo, the defender is on my hip.
07:26First of all, the person guarding me is too small.
07:30So I'm not going to play bully ball with Valanchunas or go up with Valanchunas.
07:35I'm going to stick right here with this little small dude right here.
07:38And it's going to be me and you.
07:40So you know he gets into his body and tries to get a nice little one-two for the one time.
07:45And then, of course, pick and roll with AD.
07:48You got Zion and Valanchunas.
07:50If they get the switch with Zion on AD, meet me at the rim.
07:54Throw it over Zion to where he can't jump.
07:56He uses athleticism.
07:58And meet me at the rim for AD.
08:00Either way, this in-season tournament has been fun to watch.
08:03And I'm super happy to break it down for you guys, first of all.
08:07But either way, I'm trying to get tickets to the last game right now.
08:11Just to see LeBron.
08:13Maybe if he gets his first trophy in the first in-season tournament.
08:20Or, shoot, I got to see Tyrese do his thing.
08:25Hopefully he gets his first trophy for the in-season tournament.
08:29Either way, it'll be very entertaining.
08:31So I appreciate you guys watching The Advantage.
08:34Peace out.
