03:11And now, here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message, The Golden City.
03:19Eliezer ben Yehuda and his new wife Deborah
03:23sailed wide-eyed into the port of Joppa, which is in Israel.
03:28They had dreamed forever that they would be able one day to step into the Holy Land
03:32and now their dream had come true.
03:34They arranged to get from Joppa to Jerusalem by an overnight horse cart
03:39and they approached the city of Jerusalem just as the sun was coming up.
03:44They noticed that the gate had been closed to the city,
03:48but just as they got there, it started to open.
03:51It seemed almost miraculous to them.
03:54But when they entered into the city, they were very confused.
03:59They thought, where are the Jerusalem people?
04:02Where is the spirit of holiness we expected?
04:06Was this the city which had so many centuries of conflict
04:10and plunder and massacre and misery?
04:13Was this the city from which men from all over the world had fought?
04:17Was this the city which the prophets had preached,
04:20which had been destroyed and reconstructed 18 times?
04:24The city didn't seem right.
04:26You see, the year was 1881,
04:29and Eliezer and Deborah were among the first Zionist Jews
04:33returning to the land that would later once again be called Israel.
04:38In the years to come, Ben Yehuda
04:41would almost single-handedly do the impossible.
04:44He resurrected the Hebrew language from antiquity
04:48and made it the language of the Jews once again.
04:51In fact, Ben and Deborah had a son,
04:54and they told Ben that he would never hear another language
04:57in their house but Hebrew.
05:00And Ben Zion was raised hearing and speaking only Hebrew.
05:04He didn't play with other children.
05:07He became the first native speaker of Hebrew in modern times,
05:11and Eliezer and his wife believed
05:14if their own son could learn the language,
05:17the whole nation can learn the language.
05:19Unfortunately, Ben Yehuda didn't live long enough
05:22to see the state of Israel become official,
05:25but Yehuda and his wife were very loved people
05:28because of the gift they had given to the nation.
05:31When he died, 30,000 people came to his funeral.
05:35So, what drew the Zionists back to Jerusalem?
05:38Why is Israel today such a magnetic place?
05:43It's a very conflicted city.
05:46For 3,000 years, it's been at the forefront
05:49of geopolitical struggles.
05:51Even today, it's the centerpiece
05:53of the world's three major religions.
05:56It's ground zero for international
05:58political maneuvering.
06:00For generations, Jerusalem has been a place of pilgrimage
06:03and pillaging, miracles, and mayhem.
06:06They're being shot at from the north
06:08and shot at from the south,
06:10and rockets coming in from everywhere,
06:12hated by many of their neighbors
06:15but loved and respected by many of us.
06:19The long-time mayor of Jerusalem,
06:21a guy named Teddy Kollick, said,
06:23Jerusalem has been the center of Jewish hope and longing,
06:26and no other city has played such a dominant role
06:30in the history, culture, and religion of the world.
06:35Without Jerusalem, the land of Israel
06:38is a body without a soul.
06:41Why does this desert city charm people when they go there?
06:45I have to honestly tell you, whenever I go to Israel,
06:48we start out in the northern part of Israel
06:50by the Sea of Galilee,
06:52and we stay in Tiberias for a little bit.
06:54Then we come down, and we spend
06:56between three and five days in Jerusalem.
06:58We stay in a hotel right in the center of the city,
07:00and periodically when I go out of that hotel
07:03to walk around in the city,
07:05I feel like I'm in some sort of a spell or something.
07:08It's like an aura that surrounds you.
07:10I never have understood that
07:12until I began to really read
07:14what the Scripture says about Jerusalem.
07:17The Bible tells us that Jerusalem
07:19has a big badge on it that says,
07:22God's city.
07:24Listen to 2 Chronicles chapter 6.
07:27Here's God speaking.
07:29"'Since the day that I brought my people
07:31"'out of the land of Egypt,
07:33"'I have chosen no city from any tribe of Israel
07:37"'in which to build a house,
07:39"'that my name might be there.
07:41"'Nor did I choose any man to be a ruler
07:43"'over my people Israel.
07:45"'Yet I have chosen Jerusalem
07:47"'that my name may be there.'"
07:50The reason Jerusalem is special to me
07:52is because it's God's chosen city.
07:55Of all the cities of the world,
07:57and you know how many there are,
07:59God chose Jerusalem as his city.
08:03And because it is God who established the city,
08:06Psalm 87 3 says,
08:09"'O city of God,
08:11"'what glorious things are said of you.'"
08:14You may not realize how prominent this city is
08:17even in the Bible.
08:19It's mentioned in the Old and New Testament 811 times.
08:23The next closest city is, like, in the 200s.
08:27800 times Jerusalem is mentioned.
08:30And the Bible intimates that if you are born in Israel,
08:34if you are born in Jerusalem,
08:36there's a special blessing attached to you.
08:39Here is Psalm 87 from the living Bible.
08:42"'But someday the highest honor
08:45"'will be to be a native of Jerusalem.
08:48"'For the God of heaven above all gods
08:50"'will personally bless this city.
08:53"'When he registers her citizens,
08:55"'he will place a checkmark
08:57"'beside the names of those who were born there.'"
09:00So, you get born in Jerusalem,
09:02God puts a checkmark next to your name.
09:04I don't understand all that, but I believe it,
09:06and I know it's just another reminder to us
09:09of the importance of Jerusalem
09:11and a reminder to us that we should learn
09:14everything we can about this city
09:16as we head toward the future.
09:18Of course, Jerusalem is an Old Testamently prophesied city,
09:23but it is also a New Testament city,
09:25and it's a city that was loved by Christ.
09:28I put it this way.
09:30Jesus was a Jerusalem boy.
09:32He loved Jerusalem.
09:34He first visited this city when he was an infant,
09:37when he was dedicated to the Lord in the temple.
09:40Remember, Anna and Simeon prophesied about him.
09:44Then, when he was 12 years old,
09:46Jesus went to Jerusalem again during the Passover,
09:49and he didn't want to come home,
09:51so he stayed three days longer,
09:53and his parents left
09:55and didn't know that he wasn't with them.
09:57They got almost all the way back home,
09:59and one of them said,
10:01"'Where's Jesus?'
10:03And they found out that they had left him,
10:05and he was sitting among the aristocracy
10:07and the intelligentsia
10:09answering all of their Bible questions
10:11and their Christian questions
10:13like he was an adult
10:15because he was really a brilliant child.
10:19When he was baptized, he was taken to Jerusalem.
10:22He and others around him spent many days in Jerusalem,
10:26as you read in the Gospels, but listen to this.
10:29He was arrested in Jerusalem.
10:31He was tried in Jerusalem.
10:34He was crucified in Jerusalem.
10:36He was buried in Jerusalem.
10:38He was resurrected in Jerusalem.
10:40He ascended from Jerusalem,
10:42and one day he's coming back to Jerusalem,
10:45and he's going to put his feet on the same place
10:47from which he ascended, the Mount of Olives.
10:51Jesus loved Jerusalem.
10:53There's no question about it.
10:55When Jerusalem was in hard places,
10:58we read of Jesus' lament over them.
11:01He said, "'O Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
11:04"'the one who kills the prophets
11:06"'and stones those who are sent to her,
11:09"'how often I wanted to gather your children together
11:11"'as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,
11:15"'but you were not willing.'"
11:18Though Jesus died in Jerusalem,
11:20don't forget that he was resurrected there,
11:23and one day he will come back.
11:26The first place to feel the soles of his feet
11:29will be Olivet on the eastern side of the Golden City.
11:34Jerusalem is a conflicted city, a chosen city,
11:37a Christ-loved city,
11:39but it's also a city that's gonna be changed.
11:41That brings us to the Golden Age,
11:44the millennium that we're studying in these days.
11:47I wanna tell you about three things
11:49that are gonna happen in Jerusalem
11:51when Jesus' feet touch Mount Olivet.
11:56First, when he comes back and his feet touch the ground,
12:00he will trigger an amazing earthquake.
12:03Zechariah 14, 4 says,
12:05"'On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives
12:08"'east of Jerusalem,
12:10"'and the Mount of Olives will be split in two.'"
12:14That's not all that's gonna happen.
12:16There's gonna be an earthquake,
12:18and aquifers from underground will erupt and form a river.
12:22So, get this picture now.
12:24When he comes back, his feet touch on the Mount of Olivet,
12:27the mountain is split in two,
12:29and in the ravine that is split,
12:32water starts to come up and develop huge sources of H2O.
12:38Zechariah tells us about that.
12:40He says, "'On that day living water
12:43"'will flow out from Jerusalem,
12:45"'half of it east to the Dead Sea
12:48"'and half of it west to the Mediterranean Sea
12:51"'in summer and in winter.'"
12:53In other words, the river will divide
12:55at some point south of Jerusalem,
12:58and half of it will go to the Mediterranean Sea,
13:01and the other half will go to the Dead Sea,
13:04and it will transform the Dead Sea
13:07from a dead sea to a living sea.
13:10If you've ever been to Israel and to the Dead Sea,
13:13you know it's the lowest point on the earth,
13:16and the Dead Sea is called the Dead Sea because it's dead.
13:21There are a few microscopic insects that live in the sea,
13:26but that's it.
13:28The prophet Ezekiel devotes an entire chapter
13:31to describe this, and he said,
13:33"'I saw water coming out from under the threshold
13:36"'of the temple toward the east.'
13:38"'And then,' according to Ezekiel,
13:40"'this river will grow stronger and wider,'
13:43"'and this is what it says,
13:45"'this water flows toward the eastern region
13:47"'and goes down to the desert
13:49"'where it enters the Dead Sea.
13:51"'When it empties into the sea,
13:53"'the salty water there becomes fresh.
13:56"'Swarms of living creatures
13:58"'will live wherever the river flows.
14:01"'There will be large numbers of fish
14:03"'because this water flows there
14:05"'and makes the salt water fresh.'"
14:07Did you know that?
14:09That's what's gonna happen, but there's more.
14:11The power of Christ's return will trigger an earthquake.
14:16It will unleash a river,
14:18but it will also elevate the city of Jerusalem
14:22like it was on an elevator.
14:25The entire city will be lifted up,
14:28and to this city everyone will look.
14:31It is an amazing story.
14:33Isaiah hinted at this when he said,
14:35"'Now it shall come to pass in the latter days
14:38"'that the mountain of the Lord's house
14:40"'shall be established on the top of the mountains
14:43"'and shall be exalted above the hills,
14:46"'and all nations shall flow into it.'"
14:49Zechariah 14 says,
14:51"'The whole land from Gibba will become like the Araba,
14:55"'but Jerusalem will be raised up high
14:58"'from the Benjamin Gate to the site of the first gate,
15:01"'from the corner gate, and from the tower,
15:04"'and will remain in its place.
15:06"'It will be inhabited.
15:07"'Never again will it be destroyed.
15:09"'Jerusalem will be secure.'"
15:12These verses tell us that the Lord
15:15will bring to Jerusalem and her surrounding regions
15:18on that day an elevation of the city of Jerusalem
15:22that will make it the highest city in the world.
15:25The area on top of Jerusalem that day will be 10 miles,
15:29and Ezekiel's temple will be created
15:32on the top of that mountain.
15:34And if you want to read about Ezekiel's temple,
15:37it's in Ezekiel 40 through 46.
15:41Six chapters tell you about what's gonna happen,
15:43some surprising things.
15:45Out of the midst of this desert
15:47will rise up this incredible mountain
15:50upon which will be the city of Jerusalem
15:53and the temple of Ezekiel.
15:55What an amazing thing's gonna happen when Jesus comes back.
16:00In other words, the very geography of the promised land
16:03is going to be altered at the second coming of Christ.
16:07The Mount of Olives will be fractured,
16:09opening a wide and accessible lane
16:12for the residents to flee the city for safer places.
16:16And the foundation of the city will shift to such a degree
16:19that rivers of healing water will flow throughout the city,
16:23and the elevation of the city will rise
16:25as the surrounding countryside levels out.
16:29So, on that day, Almighty God is gonna shake up Israel.
16:35On the day you were saved, he shook up you.
16:39And you should allow what he's doing in your life
16:42to have its perfect way so that wherever you go,
16:46you take with you the influence of the Lord Jesus Christ.
16:50One day, this Israel will become the capital
16:54of the whole world.
16:56Jerusalem is the capital of Israel now,
16:58and we moved our embassy there, as you know, back in 2017.
17:03But the prophet Jeremiah said that when Jesus comes back
17:07and he sets up his kingdom, at that time,
17:10they will call Jerusalem the throne of the Lord,
17:13and all the nations will gather in Jerusalem
17:16to honor the name of the Lord.
17:19And Zechariah says,
17:20many nations will be joined to the Lord in that day,
17:24and they shall become my people, and I will dwell in your midst.
17:28Then you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you,
17:32and the Lord will take possession of Judah
17:34as his inheritance in the land
17:36and will again choose Jerusalem.
17:39Ladies and gentlemen, even though it doesn't seem so,
17:43Jerusalem is at the center of our world.
17:46Without Jerusalem, none of the things the Bible says
17:50are gonna happen will happen.
17:52It is a changed city. It is a capital city.
17:56It's a continuing city.
17:58Almost all the Christ-centered events in the future
18:01will take place in Jerusalem.
18:03Without Jerusalem, these events would be impossible.
18:06I remember when 1948 happened
18:09and the Jewish people returned to their land,
18:12it was like somebody turned a key in the prophetic clock
18:16and opened the door to a lot more things
18:19than what we had known of before.
18:21The city of Jerusalem has a great future.
18:25One day, Jesus will be seated on the throne.
18:29The whole world will be under his subjection,
18:32and the city of Jerusalem
18:34will be the capital of the whole world.
18:36That's what the Bible teaches.
18:38You know, I don't wanna leave without telling you
18:41some things that kinda touched my heart
18:44as I was studying all of this to present it to you.
18:47I wanna end this message by showing you
18:50how Jerusalem challenged me right now.
18:53Over the last few years,
18:55and especially these last few months,
18:57I've considered this,
18:59and I wanna conclude this message
19:01with two challenges for all of us.
19:03First of all, in our own hearts,
19:05no matter who we are or what our background is,
19:07if we're Christians,
19:09we need to determine to love Israel.
19:12We should determine to love Israel and its capital city.
19:15Here's what the psalmist said.
19:18Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
19:21May they prosper who love you, Jerusalem.
19:24Peace be within your walls,
19:26prosperity within your palaces.
19:28For the sake of my brethren and companions,
19:31I will now say,
19:33Peace be within you, Jerusalem.
19:35Because of the house of the Lord our God,
19:37I will seek your good.
19:39There are some instructions for us,
19:41what our attitude should be about Jerusalem,
19:44what our attitude should be about the Jewish people.
19:47God prospers those who love Jerusalem.
19:51Let's pray for the international safety of Israel.
19:54When you pray in your prayer time,
19:57make sure Israel's on your prayer list.
20:00Modern Israel's been forced to maintain
20:02a continual state of warfare throughout its years.
20:06Someone has said,
20:08Israel is like living in a very nice house
20:11in a very bad neighborhood.
20:14And that's where they are, and they need our prayers.
20:18Secondly, I don't know if you've ever thought about this,
20:22but there's a lot we can learn from Jerusalem and from Israel.
20:26I never have understood why they are so hated.
20:29It has to be the fact that they're the nation
20:32that brought Jesus into the world.
20:35Joe Lieberman, who was a Democratic senator,
20:39he ran for vice president in 2000,
20:41and he became the first Jewish candidate
20:44to ever be on a presidential ticket.
20:47Joseph Lieberman wrote a book called
20:49The Gift of Rest, Rediscovering the Beauty of the Sabbath.
20:55And he said,
20:56I love the Sabbath, and I believe it's a gift from God
21:00that I want to share with everyone.
21:02He said that although the Jews keep the Sabbath,
21:05the real truth is the Sabbath has kept the Jews.
21:09When people ask me,
21:11Joseph, how can you stop all your work as a senator
21:14and observe the Sabbath every week?
21:17And I answer, how could I do all my work as a senator
21:21if I didn't stop and observe the Sabbath every week?
21:24Every Friday, if detained at the Capitol Building,
21:28Joseph Lieberman walked the four miles home,
21:32accompanied by a U.S. policeman
21:35and another police car alongside for extra security.
21:40He said, one day, Jews like me
21:42don't ride in cars on the Sabbath.
21:45We walk.
21:46Many of the officers who accompanied him
21:49on his journey home were evangelical Christians.
21:52Many of them have talked about their discussions
21:55with this great man.
21:57They relished his conversations.
21:59Along the way, Joseph Lieberman always stopped
22:03at the Safeway in Georgetown
22:05to buy flowers for his wife, Hadassah,
22:08and treats for the family.
22:10Once he got home, the family gathered,
22:13lit the Sabbath candle, read the scripture,
22:15enjoyed supper, attended worship at the nearby synagogue.
22:20Lieberman wrote,
22:21the truth is that we and the world will survive just fine
22:26if we stop working or shopping,
22:28stay home with our families on a day each week.
22:32Our lives will continue.
22:34Our careers will go forward.
22:36Our families will flourish.
22:38We live in a culture of hard work
22:40where people are desperately in need of rest,
22:43not just rest to recharge our batteries
22:46so we can work harder,
22:47but to recharge our souls so we can live better.
22:51Sounds like something a Christian would write.
22:54For me, he said,
22:55the answer to that need has been the Sabbath.
22:58It has anchored my life, revived my body,
23:02restored my soul, and I know it can do the same for you.
23:06Now, we as Christians don't observe the Sabbath.
23:09We observe the Lord's Day.
23:11But many of the things that he said about the Sabbath
23:15could surely be said about this day.
23:17We do not realize, men and women,
23:19how important it is that this day is set aside,
23:23and what do we call it?
23:25It's the Lord's Day.
23:27It's not our day.
23:28It's the Lord's Day.
23:29And when we set aside this time to come and honor the Lord,
23:34we not only honor the Lord, but the Lord honors us.
23:40You want God to bless you in your life?
23:42Be a man or a woman of the church.
23:44The Bible tells us not to forsake the assembling
23:47of ourselves together,
23:48and especially as we see the day of the Lord drawing near.
23:54Just as the Sabbath was so crucial to Joseph Lieberman,
23:59so should the church be to us, who are God's people,
24:03and even more so, because we live
24:06on the other side of the cross.
24:08We know the Messiah has come,
24:10and as we have been learning, he's coming again.
24:14When he comes again, he will set all things right.
24:17What was taken out of us in the curse will be reversed.
24:21I want to ask you a question today.
24:23If you're excited about King Jesus reigning
24:26someday on the earth, is he reigning in your heart?
24:30There's a little phrase that I ran across in studying.
24:33It goes like this,
24:35already, but not yet.
24:38What does that mean?
24:39He's already here, but not yet.
24:43I know most of you believe the yet part of it,
24:46but is he already here?
24:49Is he the king of your life?
24:51You say, how do I know that?
24:52Well, is he sitting on the throne?
24:55Is he calling the shots?
24:58Or are you the one doing all of that?
25:02When you become a Christian,
25:03you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
25:07He wants to be not just a resident in your life,
25:10he wants to be the president of your life.
25:13And he will become that if you allow him,
25:16if you invite him.
