00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the gnarliest, bloodiest,
00:11or simply most painful deaths to come out of movies since 2000.
00:16To keep things from getting out of hand, we'll only be looking at live action features for
00:20this one.
00:21I think my throat's getting bigger.
00:24Number 30.
00:25Team One Gets Cut – The Suicide Squad
00:28Hardened criminals or not, no one was making it off this beach alive.
00:32The operation starts with Blackguard selling the team out, and ends with a bullet storm
00:37the likes of which you may never see in a superhero movie ever again.
00:49The Suicide Squad takes some heavy casualties, to put it lightly.
00:52There's also an exploding, fiery helicopter crash, just in case this beachside massacre
00:58wasn't dramatic enough.
00:59Yeah, we don't blame Savant for turning tail and running, although he doesn't get
01:07very far before Waller pulls the plug on him too.
01:10Hey, you don't get a name like The Suicide Squad if you aren't expendable.
01:15Number 29.
01:16A Total Wash – Serenity There's unexpected, there's abrupt, and
01:21then there's whatever happened to Hoban Wash Washburn.
01:24The Serenity pilot had just navigated the crew through a nail-biting crossfire, and
01:29even pulled off a miraculous crash landing too.
01:37Then as he's beginning to clap himself on the back, bang, a rogue spear blasts through
01:41the cockpit and impales him right in the chest.
01:44It doesn't just happen in the middle of a scene, it happens in the middle of a sentence.
01:51Giving Wash his moment of glory and then immediately taking it away isn't just gruesome, it's
01:55downright cruel.
01:57Number 28.
01:58Hot Shot – Dread Hostage negotiators should take notes from
02:02Judge Dread.
02:03His terms are pretty fair.
02:05If the girl goes free, the croc can peacefully live out his days behind bars.
02:10The other option?
02:11Well, it leans towards the cruel and unusual.
02:13Predictably, the villain tests his luck and if Dread's anything, he's a man of his
02:18word.
02:19The gunshot later, and the guy has a mouth full of Dread's heat bullets.
02:28He can't even utter his last words before his whole head has erupted like a baking soda
02:32volcano.
02:33The verdict is in.
02:34Never test Judge Dread.
02:40Number 27.
02:41Emily's Last Meal – The Invisible Man Horror films always have a few unlucky victims,
02:47but Emily is the saddest of all.
02:50Her only crime was hearing her sister out, and in doing so, she puts herself right in
02:54harm's way.
03:06Once Emily learned about the possibility of the invisibility suit, she had to be cut from
03:11the equation.
03:12And we do mean cut.
03:14There isn't even time to process what's going on before Emily is gone.
03:27Even worse, she was at a dinner with her sister, who is then promptly framed for the murder.
03:32He may be invisible, but this villain's body count is all too real.
03:36Number 26.
03:38Roasting Over an Open Fire – The Menu At the island restaurant Hawthorne, the entree
03:44is bloodshed.
03:45The sides come with social critiques, and it's all washed down with a tall glass of
03:50black humor.
03:51Oh, and dessert?
03:52You'll never forget it.
03:54Chef Sloic's signature s'mores recipe calls for a secret ingredient.
03:58Everyone on the island.
04:11He isn't a monster, though.
04:12He sweetens the deal with some sugary additions.
04:15Adorned with marshmallow helmets, chocolate toupees, and graham cracker suits of armor,
04:20the staff and guests all submit to Hawthorne's final dinner service.
04:30It's probably the first and only time you'll see a restaurant of people die via s'mores.
04:36Number 25.
04:38Deadpool 2 Despite his penchant for quips, the merc with
04:43a mouth isn't exactly a great team leader.
04:46Case in point, the X-Force is almost entirely wiped out on their very first mission.
04:51It's not pretty.
04:52In fact, most of them don't even hit the ground.
04:54At least, not in one piece.
05:04Whether it's by public transportation, helicopter propellers, or good old-fashioned woodchippers,
05:09most of the X-Force end up dead and buried in exceedingly grotesque fashion.
05:14And Vanisher, well, his demise is the most shocking of all.
05:18Since this is still a Deadpool movie, it's all played for laughs.
05:22But that doesn't make the reality any less disturbing.
05:32Number 24.
05:33Mightier than the Sword.
05:35John Wick Chapter 2 When you think of a hitman's weapon of choice,
05:45a measly pencil probably doesn't come to mind.
05:48But this is John Wick we're talking about.
05:50It has a sharp point, that's all he needs to absolutely shred through enemies.
05:55When two assassins try to double-team him, he uses the writing utensil like an exacto-knife,
06:00causing enough damage to leave you queasy.
06:03John certainly gets points for creativity, even if it is hard to watch at points.
06:08That pencil is going to need a serious cleaning after this fight, that's all we're saying.
06:23Number 23.
06:25Barbaric!
06:26Cocaine Bear Like all great movies, this sophisticated
06:32think piece asks a very important moral question.
06:36Can a coked-up black bear outrun a speeding ambulance?
06:39These paramedics have to learn the hard way that the answer is, unequivocally, yes.
06:45Look, Cocaine Bear is all kinds of insane.
06:49But seeing a high-speed car chase turn into an on-the-run bear feast is just something
06:53else.
06:54Whatever you think you're prepared for, we promise you, this scene is even crazier.
06:59The paramedics could try calling another ambulance, but something tells us they may have better
07:04luck with animal control next time.
07:11Number 22.
07:13Wolverine's Last Hunt, Logan With his regenerative abilities failing him,
07:18Wolverine stepped into this fight knowing full well it could be his final stand.
07:27But all things considered, battling his clone to save his quasi-daughter is the most poetic
07:33ending Logan could have hoped for.
07:35That doesn't make it a happy goodbye though.
07:37Between Logan, Laura, and X-24, there's a lot of adamantium claws bloodying things up.
07:43Logan takes it all like a champ, but not even he can bounce back from a tree branch in his
07:48midsection.
07:49It's a wince-inducing farewell to Wolverine that's soaked with both blood and tears.
07:56Number 21.
07:58Unmasking Immortan Joe, Mad Max Fury Road There's no such thing as mercy in this post-apocalyptic
08:05wasteland.
08:06Immortan Joe should know that better than anyone.
08:09So it's only fitting that he reaps what he sowed at the hands of Furiosa, who chains
08:14his iconic mask to the wheel of his vehicle.
08:16The truck keeps going, the chain goes taut, and Immortan Joe loses his face covering.
08:22And a lot of other stuff too.
08:24You get the picture.
08:26It's the kind of haunting end that only gets worse the more you think about it.
08:30But then again, we can't say Immortan Joe didn't have it coming.
08:37Number 20.
08:38Georgie Meets Pennywise, It Georgie's parents taught their youngest son
08:42not to take things from strangers.
08:45However, that didn't stop the killer clown Pennywise from striking up a deeply uncomfortable
08:50conversation with the boy.
08:51Georgie, meet Pennywise.
08:54Now we aren't strangers, are we?
08:58The scene stews in spine-tingling tension just long enough to make the eventual jump
09:03scare downright unforgettable.
09:06For his friendliness, Georgie lost his boat, his arm, and his life.
09:10The pained cries for his brother are haunting no matter how you cut it.
09:14Let alone from a six-year-old child.
09:16It set a sinister precedent for Pennywise's rampage throughout the rest of the film.
09:24Number 19.
09:25Meet the Grinder, Kingsman, The Golden Circle.
09:29More often than not, traitors and villains end up in handcuffs by the time the credits
09:33roll.
09:34So those are your principles?
09:35Making money?
09:37Our agencies were founded to uphold peace, to protect the innocent.
09:41Except in this case, there isn't a hand left to cuff.
09:44Pedro Pascal's traitorous whiskey put his personal vendetta above the mission.
09:49But all he got was a much-deserved beatdown courtesy of Eggsy and Harry Hart.
09:54The two agents didn't just stop at fisticuffs, though, and they decided whiskey was better
09:59left as a paste instead of a man.
10:03As far as painful ends go, diving headfirst into a meat processor has got to be pretty
10:08high on the list.
10:17Number 18.
10:19Flipping Out, Final Destination 5.
10:30Death will not be thwarted.
10:32In the fifth entry of this horror franchise, the first named character Death is the most
10:37brutal.
10:38Candice's fatal gym practice is full of misdirects and dead ends, conjuring an unbearable
10:43sense of dread to every move.
10:46In the end, though, it all comes down to gravity, namely a rather botched landing.
10:51Candice definitely earned a few deductions on this one, and that's putting it lightly.
10:56It's just a mercy that the aftermath is obscured until the dust settles, which leaves
11:01plenty of time to look away from the disturbingly mangled remains.
11:12Number 17.
11:14Spine Tingling, Predators It's a cardinal rule of horror that the villain
11:18always comes back for one last scare.
11:21But evidently, Stan's hadn't brushed up on the topic before gloating about killing
11:25the Predator.
11:31The creature doesn't take it very kindly, and treats the death row inmate to a shot
11:36in the back and a very rough spinal surgery.
11:39As if the visuals alone weren't bad enough, the sickening sound effects prove that it
11:43doesn't feel very nice.
11:45At least Stan's bought enough time for his team to get away.
11:52Number 16.
11:54David Devoured, Shaun of the Dead By the time all is said and done, this guy
11:59probably wished he would hurry up and zombify already.
12:02Admittedly, it's hard to feel too bad for David's demise, especially since he's
12:07the one who decided to start removing the barricade in the first place.
12:15All it did was put him on a silver platter for the zombies, who didn't stop feasting
12:19until his insides were on the outside.
12:22A single bite would have done the same thing, and been a lot less painful.
12:26But hey, at least Diane found a use for his detached leg.
12:30Quite frankly, it's the biggest help David had been in the whole movie.
12:39Number 15.
12:40A Dance to Die For, Ghost Ship This adds new meaning to the phrase, dance
12:45like there's no tomorrow, since for most of these passengers, there wouldn't be
12:51After all, the only thing sharper than these dance moves was the razor wire that swept
12:56the crowd.
12:57And not in a fun way.
13:05The result is a remarkably bloody, inventive, and effective massacre that lives on in horror
13:10infamy.
13:11Honestly, we can't decide what's worse, death by division, or being the only one
13:16left in an actual sea of bodies.
13:19But at least it was quick, because judging by the force of the wire, it most certainly
13:23wasn't painless.
13:28Number 14.
13:30Illuminati No More, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness
13:34No one expects a so-called superhero to stain their hands red, much less in a family-friendly
13:40Marvel film.
13:44But given the history of director Sam Raimi, it shouldn't have come as a shock when Wanda
13:49upgraded to supervillain, or that she went on an absolute massacre through the multiverse.
13:54From Black Bolt's implosion, to shredding Reed Richards, to Peggy's bisection, each
13:59of her murders are more gruesome than the last.
14:02It's all compounded by the fact that this is coming from a former Avenger of all people.
14:07Suffice it to say, the Scarlet Witch lived up to her name by embracing a different shade
14:12of red.
14:13Number 13.
14:23Face Off, Jason X In this futuristic slasher film, everyone's
14:28favorite hockey-masked killer found some equally forward-thinking ways to dispose of his victims.
14:34Unfortunately for Adrian, that meant a swirly into liquid nitrogen.
14:42On its own, a face of severe frostbite is creative enough to stand out even in Jason's
14:47esteemed Kill Catalog.
14:49But no one's ever accused this horror icon of shirking on his work… at least, not the
14:54kind that involves putting people into body bags.
14:57So instead of letting Adrian succumb to her very fatal wounds, he decides to shatter her
15:01skull into bloody crystals… you know, just for good measure.
15:14Number 12.
15:16A Splitting Headache, Apostle While this macabre execution definitely earns
15:20points for creativity, that doesn't make it any easier to watch.
15:35The poor Jeremy is framed for the murder of his lover, and sentenced to a slow and agonizing
15:40death by makeshift drill.
15:43Not only is it a shockingly vile way to go, but the fact that the entire village has to
15:48watch makes it that much worse.
15:50Seeing some of them lose their lunch at the site says more than the drill itself does.
15:55After all, if this is too much for even the cultists to stomach, it's no wonder the
16:00scene is a total jaw-dropper to the uninitiated.
16:09Number 11.
16:11Jonah Served Up, The Green Inferno This bloody demise is beyond savage.
16:23As they say, no good deed goes unpunished, and Jonah's well-intentioned activism results
16:28in his dismemberment.
16:30He basically becomes an action figure to the natives, complete with limbs and organs that
16:34easily pop out of place.
16:36It's plain disgusting in every sense of the word, especially when the cannibals feast
16:40upon the remains as if they were a delicacy, and all in front of his friends too.
16:46The only small mercy is that the villagers started with his head, putting him out of
16:50his misery before they finished their plates.
16:52So there's that.
16:59Number 10.
17:00Lawn Maintenance, Sinister These may be forgotten tapes of other families,
17:06but they have more in common with horror films than home videos.
17:09The footage starts out innocent enough, but there's still a certain unsettling quality
17:14to the grainy filter.
17:15Then, just when it seems the danger seems to have passed, suddenly the mower isn't
17:20only cutting grass anymore.
17:27The shrill score sells it as one of the genre's most effective jump scares, but the actual
17:32mode of death is nothing to forget either.
17:35Even putting aside the pain of it all, the victims had to endure torment at the hands
17:39of one of their own, which is just a different kind of demented.
17:50Number 9.
17:51Going Down, Drive This hyper-violent action thriller delivered
17:56an unforgettable assassination in the tight confines of an elevator, before it even reached
18:02its floor.
18:09It's all done without a single word uttered, or even a weapon for that matter.
18:14All it took was a small space, a worthy pair of kickers, and a whole lot of rage.
18:19Ryan Gosling's titular driver just doesn't quit, even when the hitman is clearly down
18:24for the count.
18:25The end result is a man with a puddle where his face should be.
18:29It's a stunning sequence that's remembered just as much for its brutality, as it is for
18:34its technical merits.
18:46Number 8.
18:47Slice and Dice, Final Destination 2 Even in a series known for offing its cast
18:53in exceedingly dramatic fashion, this was a rough way to go.
18:57Surprisingly, it wasn't the exploding car that kills Rory, or at least, not directly.
19:10That honor, or dishonor, belongs to a barbed wire fence, which gets blasted with enough
19:15force to do more than shave a few pounds off.
19:19In the end, all Rory, or rather, the pieces of him, can do is slowly fall to the ground
19:24like the uneven layers of human cake.
19:27As far as dismemberments go, this one cuts the deepest, if only because of that sickening
19:32aftermath.
19:41Number 7.
19:42Twisted, Suspiria What makes this horrifying scene even worse
19:47is that Olga's last dance wasn't actually her own.
19:51Instead, it was choreographed by the unknowing Susie, who created a routine that's practically
20:01to die for.
20:02It contorts Olga's body into a gross tangle of limbs that's just difficult to look at,
20:08let alone experience.
20:09The unflinching savagery easily positions it as one of the most ruthless body horror
20:14scenes in any movie, period.
20:16Afterwards, the matrons grab her with hooks and use her for their ritual.
20:21Olga didn't technically die here, but given what transpired after, she probably wished
20:26she had.
20:33Number 6.
20:34Nick Gets Halved, Bone Tomahawk Getting imprisoned by cannibals rarely spells
20:39good fortune, but the utter lack of humanity here puts it in a league of its own.
20:44At this point, it was already clear that the so-called troglodytes were not friendly.
20:49However, watching them strip and scalp Nick conveys their brutality in a way words never
20:54could, so much so that we can't show most of this scene here.
20:58The camera rarely points away from the bloodshed, which makes it an endurance test of sorts
21:03as the humiliation escalates.
21:05The desecration ends with them tearing him in two.
21:08Watching them eat his remains after the fact feels particularly callous considering everything
21:13they just put him through.
21:24Number 5.
21:25A Smashing Affair, Pan's Labyrinth We've all seen the bottom of the bottle
21:30during a night out.
21:32Unfortunately for this suspected rebel, Captain Vidal showed him a more literal meaning of
21:38the phrase.
21:49In doing so, he left the victim's skull looking more like a crater than a head.
21:54However, even that abrupt flash of gore isn't as spine-tingling as the complete calm in
21:59which Vidal does it.
22:01It's clear he's done this before, and will do it again if given the opportunity.
22:05He had a gun on him after all, so the fact that he chose to personally and violently
22:10dispatch the farmer speaks volumes.
22:16Number 4.
22:17A Good Head On Her Shoulders, Hereditary Evidently, iconic death scenes run in the
22:22family.
22:33No doubt Annie's throat massage with a piano wire was the greatest kind of shocking send-off
22:38a character could hope for.
22:40But despite Paiman's best efforts, even that can't top the unmitigated shock of
22:45Charlie's abrupt decapitation.
22:48It's the ultimate bloody surprise during a scene that demands its audience focus on
22:52anything but the coming telephone pole.
22:55While it's hard to say if Charlie's nut allergy would have claimed her anyway, it
22:59certainly would have been a less violent way to go.
23:02If anything, it would have left the Graham family with a lot less trauma.
23:18Number 3.
23:19Crucifixion, The Passion of the Christ Director Mel Gibson made sure this film earned
23:24its R rating, that's for sure.
23:29No matter how controversial the resulting violence may be, there's no denying it crafted
23:33one very memorable death scene.
23:36The movie puts an immense, prolonged, and almost gratuitous focus on the suffering that
23:41Jesus endured during his crucifixion.
23:44That means showing everything, blood and all.
23:47Even though it's adapted from revered source material, seeing it performed in a mainstream
23:51blockbuster is an entirely different experience.
23:55The excessive violence and somber score make the scene more unpleasant than uplifting.
23:59But then again, that seems to be the whole point.
24:15Number 2.
24:16Bedroom Butchering, Terrifier 2 Even psychopathic killers need a refreshment
24:21every now and then.
24:23But once he's rehydrated, Art the Clown does what he does best, terrify.
24:32He's not one to make false promises either.
24:37By the time his torment of Allie is over, she's lost skin, limbs, and has suffered
24:42broken bones to boot.
24:44Then Art decides to season his new victim with salt and bleach, even going as far as
24:49rubbing it into her wounds.
24:51Clearly, this is a dish best served with a barf bag.

25:18Number 1.
25:20On Acid, Saw VI Admittedly, this horror franchise has no
25:25shortage of gory, horrifying, and downright nasty modes of death.
25:33Look no further than the twisted rack scene from Saw III.
25:36Or how about the sadistically creative reverse bear trap from Saw 3D?
25:40No matter where you look, there's plenty of blood to satisfy genre diehards, and yet
25:45none of that compares to William's death by Acid.
25:49It might not sound all that bad until you realize that he doesn't just die.
25:54He dies from the inside out.
25:56What remains can't even be called a body anymore.
25:59If this isn't Jigsaw's sick magnum opus, we don't know what is.
26:04Which of these deaths do you have to watch through your fingers?
