00:00Call it the witching hour for Marvel Studios. Kevin Feige's first foray into Disney Plus
00:05streaming went extremely well with WandaVision, the 2021 spinoff series that follows the powerful
00:10Scarlet Witch as she struggles to come to terms with the loss of her beloved Vision.
00:15And one of the series' highlights was Catherine Han's mischievous neighbor-turned-antagonist
00:19Agatha Harkness, a rival witch with a gift for gaslighting, girlboxing, and more.
00:25There's so much to explore with this character. She's like a bottomless pit of mystery."
00:32It took three years for the studio to bring Agatha back for more hijinks, but we're finally
00:36mere days away from the arrival of Agatha all along. And after a buzzy Hollywood premiere,
00:42the first reactions are in. Early word is generally positive, with a couple of caveats.
00:47"...to Harbingers of Doom?"
00:50And because Marvel only screened the first few episodes of the series ahead of time,
00:54early reactions are inevitably made up of incomplete thoughts and educated guesses
00:58about where things might go. We'll start with our very own B.J. Colangelo, who took to X
01:03to report,
01:04"...I've only seen a few episodes, but Agatha all along does what every good Marvel show
01:08should do — make me want more. I am eagerly awaiting the rest of the season to see where
01:12this sensational cast goes next."
01:15The cast in question includes Catherine Han, Aubrey Plaza, Joe Locke, Sashir Zameda, Alice
01:20Woo-Gulliver, Deborah Jo Rupp, the great Patti LuPone, and probably a few surprises,
01:25too.
01:26"...what witch in her right mind would join Agatha Harkness' coven? Not looking for right-minded
01:33witches as it happens."
01:35Eric Goldman of IGN and Fandom echoes Colangelo's thoughts, though he notes a few early growing
01:40pains along the way, along with some bad news for the worst members of online fandom these
01:44days. Goldman wrote,
01:46First four episodes of Agatha All Along are decent. Really dig the premiere and its very
01:50WandaVision vibes, but second episode is shaky tonally, begins to find itself more in three
01:55and four, will predictably make guys who demand badass as the only setting to scream, woke,
02:01and cry like babies.
02:02IndieWire digital spy and Yahoo! critic David Opie suggested a target audience for the series,
02:07writing,
02:08"...Agatha All Along is a bit slow to start with, but you won't care because you're having
02:12so much fun with the cast and vibes that are just as camp and spooky as you'd hope for.
02:16This show really is for the gays. If anything, Marvel actually downplayed how gay it is in
02:20tone and feel."
02:21"...Do I hate her or do I want her phone number?"
02:25That's the problem with studios refusing to send out full seasons to critics ahead of
02:29time. Reactions end up slightly muted if the early episodes aren't clicking on all cylinders.
02:34That appears to be the case here, as evidenced by many of the more cautious reactions making
02:38the rounds on social media. Take Mama's Geeky Movie & TV Geek's Tessa Smith, for instance,
02:43who said,
02:44"...Perhaps I love WandaVision too much, making Agatha All Along start off extremely slow
02:49and a tad boring for me. It isn't until Episode 4 that I start to really care about the answers
02:54to the questions we've been given. Catherine Hahn and Aubrey Plaza are great together."
02:58"...That witch is gone, leaving you trapped in her distorted spell. Claw your way out."
03:06Of course, that's not to say the entirety of the first four episodes are a total wash.
03:10Jenna Anderson of ComicBook.com begs to differ with the naysayers, writing,
03:14"...Agatha All Along is a delight. The first four episodes are kooky, legitimately funny,
03:19and surprising on a comics MCU level. Dynamite performances across the board. I can't wait
03:24to see more."
03:25"...Heard you guys were having a party."
03:27The Mary Sue's Rachel Leishman offers more high praise, saying,
03:31"...Must be the season of the witch, baby. Agatha All Along is the perfect continuation
03:35of Westview and everything my witchy soul needed. A perfect blend of Marvel lore for
03:40the witchy season and I cannot wait to see the rest of the series."
03:43Not excited yet? Then allow Alex Zalban of Comic Book Club to throw some chum in the
03:48water for the shippers out there, writing,
03:50"...Loved the first four episodes, perfect witchy vibes, a fantastic cast, some real
03:54spooky moments, and slowly creeping emotion as well. Catherine Hahn is superb as Agatha,
03:59Aubrey Plaza is incredible as Rio. You are going to ship the two of them so hard."
04:04"...Join me."
04:06Say no more. We're in. The first two episodes of Agatha All Along hit Disney Plus on September
04:1118th, 2024.
