00:14Barbara and Sam, living it up in the Amazon.
00:17I want a hammock and a glass of cava, please.
00:20Jeremy and I were really ready for an adventure.
00:23I'm going to eat, pray, love the hell out of this.
00:26The tough reality of the race kicked in.
00:30We're in trouble here, mate.
00:32Where are we going, mate?
00:34We're in the middle of nowhere.
00:35I don't think Dad's coping well.
00:37For four celebrities and their loved ones.
00:40I don't need this right now.
00:42You've got a lovely cheat room and you've got a miserable wife,
00:44so well done.
00:45One more day like this will break us.
00:47God, I was so naive.
00:49The 12,500-kilometre race...
00:52This is another level.
00:53Mate, Lemonada.
00:55..from the Amazon to the Andes.
00:57This is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
01:00It's made me fall in love with life again.
01:02Woo!
01:03Has strengthened them.
01:04You get knocked down, you can get back up.
01:06That's what it's all about.
01:07I feel like I'm winning.
01:09And their relationships.
01:11Have I let you down?
01:12No, you've never let me down.
01:14I wouldn't have wanted to have done anything else with anyone else.
01:18Proud of you.
01:20Oh!
01:22Now, the final stretch.
01:24That's a volcano.
01:25And a mountain to climb.
01:26This is it.
01:27Which team will triumph?
01:28It's really steep.
01:30This is our last sprint together.
01:31Let's do it.
01:32I can feel it.
01:33Ah!
01:34There's a flag.
01:35And a race...
01:36Turn it up!
01:37..across the world.
01:39Oh!
01:54Lying in the foothills of the Andes,
01:57the Argentinian town of Tilcara,
02:00where some precious downtime is enjoyed
02:03before the last and longest leg of the race.
02:06Oh, this is gorgeous!
02:09Oh, stunning.
02:12I've forgotten who won.
02:14How can you forget?
02:15Oh, it was you!
02:16Oh, yeah, it was you!
02:17Congratulations.
02:19Congratulations.
02:2139 minutes between us all.
02:22That's the time it takes me to brush my teeth
02:24and bloody have a sink wash at a bus station.
02:28After racing 9,750 kilometres,
02:32there's now just 39 minutes separating all four teams.
02:36Who's going to win?
02:38Ah!
02:41Oh, we've got one bag!
02:42We've got two!
02:46We're in a very strong line-up
02:48with lots of people that really, really want to win.
02:50We're already emptying our bags.
02:52Are you? Ready.
02:53Are you?
02:54I've got one pair of knicks, one bra and a lip gloss.
02:58Yeah.
02:59We haven't come this far just to give up now.
03:02I know we're fourth.
03:03I think we've got a little bit of fight left in us.
03:06I don't think I've won anything, so to win this, of all things,
03:09I'd be like, oh, my God.
03:11Yeah, I wouldn't shut up about it.
03:13Your team-mate says she's never won anything in her life.
03:16You're like, what?
03:18I think we can win it, definitely.
03:20Even if we don't have enough money to get there,
03:22we'll make it happen somehow.
03:24Yeah, mate.
03:26With the slenderest of leads,
03:28Kola and Mary-Ellen also have the smallest of budgets,
03:32a third of Geoff and Freddie's.
03:35Argentina is expensive, but what is Chile?
03:37Yeah, exactly. I think it might be more.
03:41We get the impression that we might have a little bit more than others.
03:44Let's see how that advantage plays out.
03:46I think our budget was going well,
03:48but then in the last week or so, we've been splashing.
03:53We've made a few gambles and they have paid off
03:56and I'm hoping that we've got one more gamble left in us.
03:59The race is anyone's.
04:01Everyone's out for blood.
04:03Cheers. Cheers, everybody. Good luck.
04:05Good luck, everyone. Good luck.
04:155.35am.
04:17Morning. Good morning. How are you?
04:20So, this is for you.
04:23I think we know where we're going.
04:25Head to Fratilla and wait for further instructions.
04:292,750km south from Tilcara,
04:34the finish line.
04:37Frutijar, a small town situated in Chile's lake district, Los Lagos.
04:43It sits beside Lake Yanquiway
04:46and beneath the shadow of the mighty Osorno volcano.
04:52All right, let's go. Go, go, go.
04:54Standing in the team's way, the Andes.
04:58Forming over millions of years
05:01and now towering up to nearly 23,000 feet,
05:05the longest mountain range in the world
05:08separates Chile from Argentina
05:11and the decision of where to cross is crucial.
05:15They could cross early and enter Chile
05:17by taking the northern border through the Atacama Desert,
05:21a rugged, less-travelled route
05:23but with dramatic otherworldly scenery.
05:26Or head to the hub city of Mendoza, where they have a choice.
05:30Either take the high-altitude mountain pass
05:33to Chile's capital, Santiago, to find good transport links
05:37or continue south through Argentina's beautiful Patagonia
05:42before crossing the southern Andes, closer to Frutijar.
05:47I think crossing the northern border into Chile as quick as possible,
05:51that's a win. Yeah.
05:54And if we don't make it, at least we can say we made it to Chile.
05:59Go, go, we're released. Let's go. Let's do it.
06:02It is go time.
06:03Geoff and Freddie are only seven minutes behind us.
06:06With buses crossing the northern border thin on the ground...
06:09Is this a taxi point? Hola!
06:12..the cousins look for a faster getaway.
06:15We need to go San Pedro. San Pedro, Atacama.
06:18Atacama, yes.
06:19We're going to win. I'm manifesting my name in that book.
06:23Oh, 100%.
06:25$50?
06:27I might be, like, not in the game for 89 minutes,
06:30but at the last minute, mate, it's game time.
06:34$50? Handshake?
06:36CHEERING
06:38Five minutes in, baby, we are the move.
06:43Taking the northern desert route,
06:45Cola and Mary Ellen are the first team to leave town
06:48but have no room for monetary mishaps.
06:51See you later, mate.
06:52Geoff and Freddie...
06:53You're absolutely right, we don't have to work.
06:55..are starting off with the deepest pockets.
06:58Because we've got a really good budget,
07:00work isn't going to dictate our leg.
07:02My focus is enjoying this with you.
07:04For us to not do that on this last leg will be a bit of a crime.
07:07Yeah.
07:09All of these wonderful big moments
07:12are going to help shape my little boy.
07:15I want that for Fred.
07:17I want that moment of opening the book on that last leg
07:21and coming first.
07:23What do you think we'll do?
07:25You'll be in a cry.
07:27Mendoza gives you flexibility, doesn't it?
07:30It means that we can go into Chile at Santiago
07:33or we can carry on through Argentina.
07:36Avoiding the less-travelled northern route, Geoff's plan,
07:40hop to nearby transport hub San Salvador de Jujuy
07:44to make an onward connection to Mendoza.
07:47Let's go, Fred, last bit. Give it our all.
07:52Oh, it's early. Remind me to never do the breakfast show.
07:55Eight minutes behind...
07:57Let's plan our route.
07:59..Scott and Sam.
08:00So do we just go straight to Chile?
08:02We have no signs at all of how expensive Chile is.
08:05If we cross early, everything could be more.
08:10Do we stay in Argentina, then?
08:12Oh, I don't know.
08:14This is the biggest decision we'll have to make.
08:17One wrong route could be the difference between winning and losing.
08:28Let's go. Let's do it.
08:30Freddie, Mendoza, via San Salvador.
08:34This is it. The last push.
08:36Geoff and Freddie aren't the only team heading to San Salvador
08:39for a way to Mendoza.
08:41I'm really keen to take quite a direct route all the way south
08:44and then head straight over into Fritillia.
08:47Jeremy and I have loved Argentina so much
08:49and there's still more to discover.
08:51I honestly think it's going to be not only really scenic
08:54but also quite quick.
08:57Hola. 7.45, Jujuy.
09:00We can take a cab.
09:02Have a little look, see if we can find a taxi.
09:04There you go. Keep the change and we're done.
09:06While Geoff and Freddie take the cheaper option...
09:09Taxi? OK. Bye.
09:14..banking on a speedier journey,
09:16Kelly and Jeremy fork out five times as much.
09:19Oh, they've got impatient again in the cab.
09:22Get on the move, son.
09:26Are we actually doing this? Which way do you want to go?
09:28Are we doing this? Unless you want to make a decision.
09:31Right. Heads. Argentina.
09:34Tails. Chile.
09:40Heads. Argentina. Argentina.
09:43Let's go.
09:49The boys.
09:51Yeah, they're on there.
09:53They're out of here. They're gone.
09:55Geoff and Freddie are out.
09:57There's nothing more depressing than seeing another team
10:00wave to you from a bus.
10:02Hello!
10:04Good luck, guys. Good luck.
10:06Thank you. Good luck.
10:08So that's two couples out of here. Brilliant.
10:10Come on, then. Let's race, race, race.
10:22How was your taxi? It was good.
10:24Our bus went so quickly,
10:26so taxi would have been no advantage.
10:29Enough about us.
10:31Hola. We're in Mendoza.
10:33This is great. We want to get on this bus
10:35cos the tickets are selling out.
10:37The 21-hour bus catapults team's 1,300km to Mendoza,
10:43where they can either head to Chile's capital, Santiago,
10:46with its myriad of transport options,
10:48or continue further south through Argentina.
10:51But with the Easter holidays approaching,
10:54tickets are at a premium.
10:56Oh, that is heavy.
10:58Big bucks.
11:02Arriving last in San Salvador...
11:04Gracias.
11:06..also hoping to catch the same 1.15 bus to Mendoza...
11:09I spy with my little eye something beginning with KB.
11:13Shall we go and find bus tickets?
11:15Hola. Mendoza?
11:22Oh, tonight.
11:24There's no buses till this evening,
11:26a nine-hour wait here.
11:29And that means if there's a nine-hour wait...
11:33..that's us gone in the competition.
11:37This is the problem when you've got loads of teams
11:40descending on the same bus station.
11:43I think that the other two teams that are here
11:46have managed to get on that bus,
11:48and the bus is now full.
11:52I actually don't know what to do.
11:57It really is breathtaking being this high up.
12:01It's just unreal. Absolutely stunning.
12:05The only team making an early break for Chile,
12:08Kola and Mary Ellen,
12:10are approaching the northern border crossing
12:13and ascending the Andes.
12:17Oh, for altitude. I'll have some.
12:20See?
12:23What is this, then?
12:26HE COUGHS
12:28It's bitter.
12:33En route, the Salinas Grandes.
12:37212 square kilometres of white salt flats,
12:41a remnant of an ancient lake evaporated over time.
12:46I've never seen anything like this before in my life.
12:49It's so random.
12:51Like, what makes a lake just leave?
12:54Crazy.
12:55Something to behold.
12:57It's unreal.
12:59Absolutely stunning.
13:01This is beautiful.
13:05We are out of here.
13:08Do you think we're the most ahead?
13:10Yeah.
13:11Woo-hoo!
13:12We'll probably be the first ones to leave Argentina.
13:14First, yeah.
13:16We are approaching the border,
13:18from Argentina to Chile.
13:19How exciting, Kola.
13:21Vamos!
13:24The southernmost country in the world...
13:29..squeezed between the mighty Andes and the vast Pacific.
13:34Half of Chile's flora and fauna is found nowhere else on Earth.
13:38It's a land of extremes,
13:40from sparkling lakes to the driest desert in the world,
13:44the Atacama.
13:46Amazon to the Andes, my peoples.
13:48We have made it!
13:49HE SCREAMS
13:52We're a bit of a reckless duo,
13:54but we've made it to Chile,
13:56and we're really, really proud to be here, so...
13:59They're absolute hustlers.
14:01Hustlers, genuinely.
14:03Look, alpacas.
14:05Are they llamas?
14:06Llama.
14:07I think it's been the best road trip I've ever been on.
14:12Imagine if we were on a bus into the city.
14:14Yuck.
14:17Babe, I've got this for you.
14:18Yeah, yeah, I want everything.
14:19I'm literally going to make a bed.
14:21The 1.15 bus to Mendoza is about to depart,
14:24with two teams on board.
14:26We're just re-checking.
14:28There might have been one with a big queue that we didn't join.
14:31Sam is determined to find a way to stay in the running.
14:34Hola. Hola.
14:36Mendoza? Sí.
14:37Today? Sí.
14:38Dos?
14:39Only two lugares.
14:41There's only two seats left?
14:43Solamente.
14:44Scott, there's two seats left.
14:47Scott, there's two seats. Go.
14:52$150.
14:54And then there's nothing we can do about it.
14:56That's the price.
14:58$150.
15:00That's quite a lot of money.
15:01Yeah.
15:06Right, we're on it.
15:07But, yeah, I think we're sharing a bus with them for 20-odd hours.
15:10That's going to be annoying,
15:11because then we can't plan our next move on the bus.
15:13Do it quietly.
15:15So, we've got to go to M.
15:17We're going to M now.
15:18Mendoza.
15:19Then we need to go from M to S.
15:21Santiago.
15:22Then we need to find a BC to S.
15:27A border crossing.
15:28OK, that's our code now.
15:30A FBC.
15:34Fast border crossing.
15:36FBCBC.
15:38A fast border crossing, but cheap.
15:41The desk just said BC, S and M, OK?
15:48For the next 21 hours...
15:51..we're all joined.
15:54Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.
16:11Roses are red, violets are blue.
16:14I hope I win this race, and it's not you.
16:17That's a good one.
16:23Here we go, then.
16:25After 21 hours on a bus together...
16:28Go, go, go, Freddie!
16:29..a chance to make a break,
16:31and three teams now head in different directions.
16:34Just grab your bag.
16:36Chile, Santiago.
16:40Keen to cross the border into Chile as soon as possible,
16:43Scott and Sam are travelling 360km west to Santiago.
16:48That's nice, next to the toilet again.
16:50And the bin. When you recline, your head's in the bin.
16:53Oh!
16:57Hi, Colin.
16:58Hi.
16:59How are you?
17:00Good.
17:01How are you?
17:02Good.
17:04I can't see the others on the bus.
17:07Interesting, where's everyone else going, then?
17:09Where are they?
17:11Oh, my God.
17:12Kelly and Jeremy are taking a gamble
17:14on the route south through Argentina.
17:17This woman doesn't realise that she's between us and first place.
17:21She's taking her time, having a lovely little chat.
17:24The stakes are so high, she's just oblivious.
17:27What?
17:30Today.
17:32Today.
17:33Their strategy, a leap of over 1,000km to Bariloche in Patagonia
17:39to take a southern border crossing over the Andes into Chile.
17:44Sold out.
17:46Direct sold out.
17:49No, no, no, no.
17:51This is terrible.
17:53It's the religious week, everyone's moving around.
17:56Like, we want to get to the Patagonia region,
17:58so we're happy to go to Neuquén, or is there somewhere else?
18:02Si, today.
18:0460,000 for two.
18:06We've only managed to get, like, half the trip down there towards Neuquén,
18:10and I think if we get there, there'll be some other kind of options
18:14to get more down towards Bariloche.
18:16I thought this was going to be a really straightforward route,
18:18and now it obviously is turning out to be a little bit more complicated.
18:22OK, we've got a plan.
18:23We've got half a plan.
18:24Half a plan.
18:27We're going in, boys.
18:39There's a slide, there's a lazy river, and you've got mountains around you.
18:43What more do you want?
18:45I've never been anywhere like it.
18:48Recharging their batteries after the long bus journey,
18:51Jeff and Freddy are outside Mendoza at the Cachalta Thermal Spa.
18:57How's that, Fred?
18:58That's like the shower that I crave when I haven't washed for two days.
19:02Wash every day at home.
19:03Buoyed by still holding a healthy budget,
19:06they relax before the final push.
19:09Here he goes.
19:10The natural hot springs, rich in rejuvenating minerals,
19:14can reach up to 40 degrees.
19:17Fred plus water equals joy.
19:22Obviously, seeing Fred happy makes me really happy.
19:25But in this hand, I'm thinking about the race.
19:28I'm thinking about the next steps,
19:30and I find it really hard to switch off from that.
19:34I was brought up playing football,
19:36and it was train to win, you play to win.
19:39It's a part of why I'm really resilient.
19:42But there are always going to be experiences like this,
19:46where I think it just demands your focus be taken from the race
19:51and just put on the now.
19:53That's something I'm really grateful for.
19:56I feel like we deserve this because of how well we've done.
19:59Yeah.
20:04Ciao.
20:05Where do you think the bus goes from, Fred?
20:07Heading back to Mendoza to continue their onward journey.
20:13Dad, we've just missed our bus.
20:15Oh, my God.
20:19What a mess.
20:21You go somewhere relaxing, you take your head off the race,
20:25and then all of a sudden you just, like,
20:28completely go off the boil.
20:30Now I can't even, like, literally get out of here.
20:33Fred, what do we do? We messed this up.
20:39We could possibly hitchhike.
20:41I'm going to walk with my thumb out.
20:44Why?
20:45Mendoza?
20:46Why?
20:47Are you going to Mendoza?
20:49Please, can we come with you?
20:55Mendoza, Pepevo?
20:57Pepevo.
20:58Pepevo.
21:00Mendoza, Pepevo?
21:03OK.
21:04Mendoza.
21:13Go on, quick.
21:15Hola.
21:16Mendoza, Pepevo?
21:18Yes.
21:21Thanks again, guys.
21:22I love this.
21:25Where are you from?
21:26Sorry.
21:27I was in England two times.
21:29Really?
21:30I was in Manchester, London, Southampton, Bournemouth.
21:32But this is beautiful.
21:34We're going to South Chile.
21:36That's the finish line.
21:38OK.
21:39A big question for us,
21:41do we stay in Argentina and go south?
21:45Or actually, do we go to Santiago
21:49and go south through Chile?
21:51We just really need the quickest option.
21:54Where to south Chile?
21:56Rutila.
21:58Do you know it?
21:59Yeah.
22:00Maybe it's quicker by Chile.
22:02Sure.
22:03It looks like we're heading to Santiago then.
22:06I hope you win.
22:07Thank you so much.
22:08200 kilometres ahead...
22:10Well, we made it to Chile.
22:11We did.
22:12Quicker than I thought.
22:14Already on the road to Santiago,
22:16Scott and Sam are the second team to traverse the Andes.
22:20I've never seen anything like this.
22:23It just goes on.
22:24The scale of it.
22:26You know, on these buses,
22:27because we've taken so many of them,
22:29I normally sleep to pass the time.
22:31I don't want to sleep on this one
22:32because I'm worried I'll miss something.
22:35Climbing 10,500 feet,
22:38the crossing takes in views of Mount Aconcagua,
22:42the highest mountain in the Americas.
22:47Oh, my God.
22:48I can't look at that, it's too high.
22:53The descent is one of the world's windiest roads,
22:57a steep series of continuous switchbacks.
23:03I find it mad there's no barriers.
23:05Stop talking.
23:08Oh, I don't like it.
23:12Oh!
23:14That's my worst nightmare.
23:19As the sun's setting behind the mountain,
23:21it's making the mountains all look red, was it?
23:24Red sky at night, shepherd's light.
23:26I'd be saying that every night if I lived here.
23:31The couple are the first team to reach Chile's capital,
23:35one of South America's most expensive cities.
23:38We need to find the cheapest hotel in town.
23:43Can we book one room, please?
23:45No breakfast, cheapest room possible.
23:47I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous about the budget,
23:51cos I am.
23:52We're literally counting pennies now.
23:54It's just adding to my anxiety about finishing the race.
23:58$49.
24:00Dollars.
24:01Yes, yes.
24:02Quite a lot of dollars.
24:05It's vital that we work now, and we can do this.
24:09We've come such a long way.
24:11We're so close to the end, and it's been brilliant,
24:15and at times it's been brutal.
24:18And winning would just be an absolute dream.
24:23Oh-ho-ho-ho-ho!
24:25Oh! We're from London.
24:30Back in Mendoza, much later than planned,
24:33Geoff and Freddie console themselves
24:35with the spending power of their healthy budget.
24:38We're going to drop some pesos, a lot of pesos, actually.
24:41I've just hitchhiked. That is something to celebrate.
24:44We're winning.
24:45It's probably the best thing we've eaten this whole race.
24:50I remember in the early days in Brazil,
24:52eating buffets in the petrol garages.
24:54And now, look, three steaks in front of us.
25:00It's good, innit?
25:02I've got many beautiful memories,
25:04not just from this trip, from the whole time.
25:08Yeah.
25:09Jumping in the waves in Rio de Janeiro with you,
25:12that was probably one of my favourite moments.
25:15I think what you teach me is what I always need to be reminded,
25:20and that is to be less serious.
25:23Life got challenging, it got complicated.
25:27Now it isn't.
25:28Yeah.
25:32When me and Bobby lost our mum,
25:34he had a big responsibility to very young boys who were grieving,
25:40and that's not very fun.
25:43I feel like I haven't given myself the time to grow up
25:47because I've been holding on to a lot of things
25:50that happened to me as a kid.
25:53Yeah.
25:54I guess that's why I've still got such a playful side.
25:57You have a wonderful nature that is instantly forgiving,
26:02wonderfully carefree.
26:06I often describe you as a better person than me.
26:11I've learned a few things this race.
26:13I feel like I'm getting a bit more comfortable in myself,
26:17and it's OK to show vulnerability.
26:22I love you a lot, and I'm also very grateful for you.
26:29Yeah.
26:31I've also learned...
26:34..me and Dad are a pretty good team.
26:37Here we are, Guerrilla Hostel.
26:40I knew Dad was competitive, but, wow, like, competitive.
26:44Door F, Dad.
26:46Look, I would love to win,
26:48and I would love to share that moment with Dad.
26:52Fred, I think today was the day we become actual backpackers.
26:56We hitchhike.
26:58And we're in a hostel. Backpacker crew.
27:01What has this race done to us?
27:06Making their way through northern Chile,
27:08Kola and Mary-Ellen have reached the mystical Elqui Valley...
27:12Welcome! Hola! Buenas noches!
27:16..where the clear skies come alive at night with a blanket of stars.
27:21These are the clearest sky in the world,
27:24so tonight is going to be a good night.
27:27The cash-strapped cousins are here to work at a campsite
27:30run by Amador,
27:32who believes in the healing power of the mountains.
27:36And did you come before? No, I haven't come.
27:39We give the tent, bed mattress, pillows and everything.
27:43Amazing. I've got a two-bedroom apartment here.
27:46Yeah, yeah, yeah.
27:49This place, you can feel the, like, positive energy,
27:52the magic. Many people heal here. Yeah, do they?
27:56Yeah.
27:57Kola lost his father six months ago.
28:00Oh. This weekend.
28:02And this Sunday. So...
28:04And also, it's the same day as my mum's birthday.
28:07OK. And I lost her 16 years ago.
28:10Oh.
28:13The memories that I have of my parents are all lovely ones.
28:17My mum was a larger-than-life character.
28:20She fostered over 200 kids.
28:23My dad, yeah, he loved travel, yeah.
28:26Both loved to embrace life.
28:29Gillian Wayne. Oh, thank you so much.
28:31Oh, you don't have to ask me twice.
28:33Gracias. Gracias.
28:35Larry, look where we are.
28:37I know, right?
28:40Just look at how many clusters there are.
28:43I think they would be happy, like, you know, seeing us.
28:46Oh, my God. They would love this.
28:50My mum sadly passed from cancer in 2008.
28:55It was very hard growing up without your mother.
29:00Yeah.
29:05It made me more driven to make something of myself
29:10and make my mother proud
29:12and be the person that she would have wanted me to be.
29:18Did you know I believe in reincarnation?
29:21I'm sure of that. We live many lives.
29:24So when you die, you're going to meet her again.
29:28Yeah.
29:30So you have to try to be happy now.
29:33Yeah. Yes.
29:35I've learned that on this trip, you know.
29:37First time backpacking, first time horse riding,
29:39first time camping, you know.
29:42My parents, if they could see me in the race right now,
29:45my mum would be over the moon.
29:47She'd be bragging.
29:49My dad...
29:53He'd be like, yes, you're going to do this race
29:55and then you're going to become a lawyer.
30:00I'm proud of you as well, Mary.
30:02How strong you are and how willing you are to face your fears.
30:05You know, that takes a lot of courage.
30:07Never did I think I'd be on a stage in Brazil,
30:10dancing with professionals.
30:12I felt so free.
30:14It was incredible.
30:16When you go back, it's going to be a new Mary with a new Lisa life.
30:20Thanks for choosing me to be your race partner.
30:23It's all right.
30:29With three teams standing still for the night,
30:32Kelly and Jeremy gain ground on an overnight bus to Newquen.
30:36So I would like to buy this ticket at ten o'clock.
30:38Yeah, let's make you win the race.
30:40Planning ahead by booking an onward connection to Bariloche
30:44and touching distance of the border.
30:46Because it's Easter weekend,
30:48all the tickets and all the buses are selling out so fast,
30:51so we bought tickets online for the bus at ten in the morning.
30:56So, are you sure you want to try it?
30:59It's a huge risk, but fingers crossed it's going to pay off.
31:02We are going to fight for this until the very end.
31:08Oh, my God.
31:11This isn't good.
31:17This is the worst thing that's happened on the way so far for us.
31:21I'm so nervous.
31:23I'm so nervous.
31:25I'm so nervous.
31:27This is the worst thing that's happened so far for us.
31:30We've spent quite a big chunk of our budget now on tickets.
31:34If we don't get this bus moving and we miss our onward travel,
31:38I don't think we can afford to buy another ticket
31:41and that's the end of the race for us.
31:44This is a catastrophe.
31:53I had the best sleep ever.
31:55This place is wonderful.
31:57It's really peaceful. Nice. I like it.
32:00After a night under canvas in the fertile oasis
32:04on the edge of the Atacama Desert...
32:06Is that a weed?
32:08Hey, this is a weed.
32:10I don't know.
32:11...Cora and Mary-Ellen are working Amador's land
32:14to replenish their funds and repay his hospitality.
32:17This is going to be wonderful
32:19because we're going to reproduce, you know,
32:22more plants that produce food for us.
32:26Me and Cora woke up with a spring in our step this morning.
32:30It helps that we had a good night's sleep.
32:33Camping's a breeze.
32:35Well, you get the mattress with the tent, yeah?
32:37If all camping's like this,
32:39I'd put a little tent in my backyard.
32:41But, you know, you can't do that in Pekin.
32:45You are going to arrive before two o'clock.
32:47Amazing.
32:48Thank you, my friend, yeah?
32:49Gracias.
32:50With their budget boosted...
32:52Hola!
32:53Ah, please!
32:54Serena, Santiago.
32:56..the cousins are heading south to Santiago
32:58in search of a quick connection to Frutijar.
33:01Wow, that was close!
33:04470km away...
33:06Going into the city.
33:09..after a slow start,
33:11Jeff and Freddie are finally leaving Argentina
33:14and also heading for the Chilean capital.
33:17Freddie, faster bus, do you think?
33:19Is it ready to break the land speed record
33:22between Mendoza and Santiago?
33:24That's the question.
33:26So, I know everybody wants to win,
33:28but there's that sense that, you know, one last push,
33:31it would really be something to cross the line first.
33:35This main transportation route between Argentina and Chile
33:39is a notoriously congested crossing over the holiday period.
33:44Oh, there's a bus lane.
33:48Fred, do you know what we're doing?
33:50We're cutting all the traffic.
33:52We're breezing past absolutely everyone.
33:56This is unbelievable.
33:59This is very good for our race.
34:01See you.
34:03Arriving in Newquen after their bus breakdown...
34:07We really haven't got a lot of time to get our tickets.
34:10..Kelly and Jeremy are the only team
34:12continuing through southern Argentina.
34:14Our connection is in about 20 minutes.
34:17Oh, my God. We need to pick up tickets.
34:23Oh, it's two hours late.
34:28This is crazy.
34:30We don't know when we will leave
34:32because the bus is blocked beyond the accident,
34:35so we have to wait.
34:37The couple are now held up 500km away
34:40from the border crossing near Bariloche,
34:43where they still need to find a connection
34:45across the Andes to Frutijar.
34:49Do you want to go and find out how much a taxi is to Bariloche?
34:52Oh, God.
34:57It's a nightmare.
35:05A metropolis rising from the foot of the Andes,
35:09Chile's capital was founded in the 16th century
35:12and is home to South America's tallest building
35:15and almost half of the country's population.
35:19These are sexy, aren't they?
35:21After clearing out their funds,
35:23booking an overnight bus to Frutijar,
35:25Scott and Sam use the time on their hands
35:27to find cash for their break to the finish line.
35:30This is our last chance to make some money.
35:32We need to top up the budget
35:34because now we've bought the bus tickets, we have nothing.
35:37They've picked up a job making a Chilean speciality, completo.
35:42Beautiful.
35:43A hot dog smothered in chopped tomatoes, avocado and mayonnaise.
35:49Under the supervision of food truck owner, Ramiro.
35:53Oh, God, it's going to fall apart.
35:55I mean, I think I put a bit too much mayonnaise on.
35:59My first customer and he's chuffed.
36:02Look at him, really enjoying himself.
36:07Oh!
36:11Working was important because I've got a feeling
36:14that we need to keep some reserve money behind
36:17just in case when we get close to the checkpoint
36:20we need to pay for a donkey, pay for a taxi, pay for something
36:24so that we can make sure we finish the race.
36:27Thank you so much. Thank you.
36:30Thanks, Ramiro.
36:32Got money now.
36:35Is this exciting? I quite like it here, I think.
36:38It does remind me of, like, Paris.
36:40For the best views of the city's spectacular skyline...
36:44Are you scared? No, not scared.
36:46..a cable car up San Cristobal Hill.
36:49Oh, OK.
36:53Oh, wow, look at the mountains.
36:57It's mad to think that we started in the Amazon
37:00and there's the Andes.
37:03What a mad few weeks, Sam.
37:05After this, then, are you sure you're marrying the right person?
37:08I think if we can get through the last 30 days together,
37:11I think we can get through life together.
37:13I don't think I would have been able to do any of this
37:16with anybody else.
37:19It has been like one continuous date.
37:22I've loved every minute of it.
37:24Not every minute, but most minutes.
37:28At the start of this, I think I was quite caught up in work
37:32and I think I've learnt to spend more time for just you and me.
37:37Yeah.
37:40I don't want it to be over now.
37:42But we have got a race.
37:44We've got a race to think about.
37:46We've just got to make sure we win it now.
37:51It's so epic.
37:54So nice you've got it.
37:56Spanning Argentina and Chile,
37:58the remote wilderness of Patagonia.
38:01Once home to some of the largest dinosaurs ever to walk the earth.
38:05This does look like dinosaur country, doesn't it?
38:08Well, where would I be if I was a dinosaur?
38:10The one who fly. It does a lot of noise.
38:15Yeah, that's me.
38:17Approaching Bariloche,
38:19Kelly and Jeremy are just over 300km from Frutijar,
38:24but are the only team yet to cross the Andes.
38:27What time are we supposed to get to Bariloche?
38:313.30pm.
38:32Now we'll arrive probably at 7pm.
38:34Oh, it's quite late.
38:36I honestly believe that we picked the best route into Chile.
38:41I honestly believe it was the fastest, the most direct.
38:45I just think we have been so unlucky,
38:47with buses breaking down, buses being delayed.
38:51I just think that stuff is just, like, that is so out of our hands.
39:01Arriving late, the border crossing is shut
39:06and there's no option for onward travel tonight.
39:09We need to get a bit of rest, have some dinner.
39:12We've got energy at the moment. Yeah, absolutely.
39:15Everyone's going to get here a day before us, babe.
39:18We are so late.
39:25What I'm excited about, Fred, is getting to Santiago
39:28and realising that they have really good onward transport connections.
39:32I really do hope that's the case.
39:36In Santiago, the holidaymakers are taking to the roads.
39:41Wow.
39:42This is the busiest bus station I've seen.
39:44It's absolutely rammed.
39:46Scott and Sam are on an overnight bus in a final push to Frutijar.
39:52Please move. Move, please.
39:55We can't have this bus be late.
39:57Yes, I think we're going.
39:59The engine's making a promising sound.
40:01We're reversing.
40:08It's a green light and our bus ain't moving. Why?
40:13We've got 20 minutes to catch our bus and we're stuck in traffic
40:16and all I can hear is people's horns.
40:18Just arriving in the capital to catch their connection,
40:21Cola and Mary Ellen.
40:23We've got ten minutes.
40:25I've never been so frustrated in my life.
40:27Snow is not even a word for it.
40:29I don't think we're the only ones in this situation right now.
40:31Frutijar?
40:32Yeah.
40:33Gracias.
40:34This bus costs 30,000 each.
40:38It broke us here.
40:42As two teams make their escape out of the city...
40:48There's a lot of traffic.
40:50..Geoff and Freddie have ground to a halt,
40:52trying to make their way in.
40:55All I know is we are moving very slowly.
40:59We are bumper to bumper with the car in front
41:03and that car is bumper to bumper with that car in front, so on.
41:07At what time we're going to arrive is anyone's guess.
41:11It puts into doubt whether we're going to be able to get that bus
41:14towards Frutijar or not,
41:16or whether we're going to have to stay overnight
41:18and go again in the morning.
41:21So, we've got a few hours before our next bus.
41:24There's a nice restaurant up here with, like, a lovely view.
41:28Oh, my God.
41:29Jeremy, look at this.
41:33I've never seen anything so beautiful.
41:38See, I can see us moving here,
41:40but I don't know if we're going to make it.
41:42We're going to have to wait and see.
41:44We're going to have to wait and see.
41:46We're going to have to wait and see.
41:48See, I can see us moving here,
41:50and we have, like, a little... See that little house right there?
41:53OK. A view of the Andes.
41:57And I'm so happy we chose this route
41:59because I wouldn't have wanted to miss this for the world.
42:07Before we came away, I had a couple of weeks
42:10where I wasn't very happy
42:14and actually quite scared.
42:19I didn't know how I was going to be,
42:21living in, you know, other people's homes,
42:24not very nice hotels, being on night buses, not eating well.
42:30And I was petrified that this race would show us
42:35maybe that we weren't as strong as we thought we were.
42:39You know, I can be quite bossy.
42:43You were amazing.
42:45Thank you. Because it was not easy.
42:47I think I'm a lot tougher than I thought I was.
42:51I think I learned something very important.
42:53I need to challenge myself a little bit more
42:55because I'm not lazy, but I like my routine.
42:59We need to leave the house more.
43:01We need to leave the house more. Don't do something.
43:03Something crazy.
43:06Shall we get to Chile? Come on, let's go.
43:10We don't really know where we are,
43:12so we need to find our way to a bus garage.
43:14Oh, it's five minutes from here.
43:16We're a long way, right? We're a long way from Frutilla.
43:20Yeah. You are.
43:22Stuck in heavy holiday traffic last night,
43:25Geoff and Freddie ended up diverting an hour south
43:28of the Chilean capital to the smaller city of Rancagua.
43:33It would be good if we knew how to say we need to travel now.
43:39Frutilla?
43:42We had a major delay last night,
43:44meaning that we couldn't get on our way on an overnight bus.
43:47It meant that we were stuck in Rancagua.
43:49We were expecting to be on a bus to Frutilla last night.
43:52Sooner?
43:54Maybe we would have been arriving right about now, actually.
43:57But the links to the south from here
43:59don't seem as good as we would need them to be.
44:02Frutilla? No? OK, gracias.
44:06Work your magic, Fred. You've done it so many times on this trip.
44:09This bus goes to Concepción,
44:12which looks about halfway. Yeah? Yeah, good.
44:15It will hopefully have better transport links.
44:18Sweet. Yeah.
44:20I have found a bus for 1.15. Well done, Fred.
44:25Going to Concepción, it does feel a little bit sad.
44:28We're putting ourselves out of the race a little bit.
44:31We're maybe even not going to sort of catch anyone.
44:34So in the context of the race,
44:36then I don't think there is a race any more.
44:39I wouldn't hold any hope coming in first, second or third.
44:43Did we do everything we could? Yeah.
44:46Yeah.
44:48We'll finish, and that's all that matters.
44:51You're right. You're right.
44:53Finishing together.
44:55Good lad. Give our best to the end, yeah?
45:03For the two teams that did manage to escape
45:06the Santiago gridlock last night...
45:08It is go time. It is go time.
45:11Yeah.
45:14..the end is in sight.
45:17How are you feeling? I'm so nervous for the next bit.
45:20This is the most important run to the checkpoint.
45:24There can be no slip-ups, no wrong turns,
45:27cos every moment counts.
45:36Mary, quickly, come on.
45:38I don't want to run too fast.
45:40After 30 days and 12,500km...
45:44Rapido, rapido. We've got this.
45:47..the lakeside town of Frutijar...
45:50Come on, Mary.
45:54..and the finish line.
46:00OK.
46:02Head on foot to the Teatro dell'Arno.
46:05It's a theatre. Let's ask.
46:07Hola. Teatro...
46:09..del Lago. Five blocks. Five minutes, five blocks.
46:12Straight down? Parallel. To the right. OK. Gracias.
46:15Do you think that's that red building over there? Yeah.
46:20Can't wait for me.
46:23Teatro del Lago.
46:25That. That. Thank you.
46:27Oh, my God, downhill, yes.
46:30Teatro del Lago.
46:32Come on, Mary.
46:34Oh, there we go.
46:37Here we go.
46:39By boat or any vehicle, head approximately 25 miles...
46:43That's miles. ..to Ensenada.
46:46Find the beach at the back of the Borde Lago restaurant.
46:50OK, I see a boat off that pier.
46:55Let's go. OK.
46:57Sorry.
46:59There's a boat there.
47:01I'm going to go and ask. Yeah.
47:04Look, there's a deer. Colab, what are you, a deer?
47:06Galloping.
47:08The dog.
47:10Oh, my God. Colab, we need to ask them if they can go.
47:13Do you stop at Ensenada?
47:15No.
47:17So, you do a tour?
47:19Yeah. The boat's going.
47:21Stop, stop, stop. OK, get off.
47:25Right. Boat, what are the other options?
47:28Shall we get a taxi?
47:30Taxi right there. Hola.
47:32Borde Lago.
47:34Yes.
47:36How much?
47:3820,000.
47:4020,000 pesos.
47:42Oh, my God.
47:44Ensenada. How much?
47:46Is it quick?
47:48Yes. We need to win.
47:50Let's go. Oh, my God.
47:56Let's go!
47:59Woo!
48:02Yeah!
48:07Do you think we made the right decision getting a boat over a car?
48:11I'm not sure.
48:15Look, there's a speedboat right there.
48:17Have a look for other teams on the water.
48:22My adrenaline is pumping.
48:25Imagine someone's neck and neck with us in a car right now.
48:30It's impossible to know, and I'm trying not to overthink it.
48:34Come on! We're just going to get there now.
48:38I'm nervous. So nervous.
48:40Just get me there at this point. Get me there.
48:48Thank you so much.
48:51Is this the restaurant? Is that the beach?
48:54This is the beach at the back of the restaurant, right?
48:56OK.
48:58In front of you is the majestic Osorno volcano.
49:03By any means, head up to the base station
49:06and await your final instruction.
49:08Osorno volcano.
49:10I think it's there.
49:14For the teams, one last mountain to climb.
49:19Osorno volcano.
49:218,700 feet high.
49:24And on its slopes, the finish.
49:27Right, let's get on to the road.
49:29Taxi, do you think?
49:31Osorno volcano.
49:33That's a volcano? Oh, my God.
49:35Are we hiking? That is bonkers, Mary.
49:37Taxi? The Osorno volcano?
49:40See?
49:42OK, see? Let's go.
49:45Hola.
49:47Osorno volcano base station.
49:49How much?
49:52How much have we got left?
49:54Perfect, perfect. We've got it.
49:56Vamos!
50:02Oh, can you feel your ears popping?
50:06Woo-hoo! Yeah!
50:09This man's not in a rush.
50:11How far has he gone? 30km an hour.
50:13He certainly adheres to the speed limit.
50:15Like me, he's a cautious driver and I appreciate those people.
50:19But when you're in a race, I'd quite like you to put your foot on it.
50:22But that's not happening, is it?
50:24Come on, go, go, go.
50:27That's it there, isn't it?
50:29This is the base camp.
50:31Oh, my God.
50:34Race up the volcano by chairlift
50:36or foot to find the Chilean flag.
50:39The book awaits you at the finish.
50:42Yeah, but you can't afford a chairlift,
50:44so we're going to have to go by foot.
50:46Oh, my God, we're really racing up a volcano.
50:48Mary, come on, quickly.
50:50Do we know this is the correct route?
50:52Are we going the wrong way?
50:54We should follow the chairlift.
50:56Oh, my God.
50:58Oh, my God.
51:00Oh, my God.
51:02We should follow the chairlift.
51:04Do you want to go back down and re-route?
51:06Yeah.
51:08Last push now.
51:10This is it. Here we go.
51:12Gracias.
51:14Hola.
51:16Do you know where the Chilean flag is?
51:18That way. That way.
51:20OK.
51:22We're back on track.
51:24Walk or chairlift? That looks really slow.
51:26I think we can run faster than that.
51:28We've got this. Come on.
51:30This is expert level.
51:32I'm not even intermediate.
51:42It helps to walk diagonally.
51:46OK? Yeah.
51:48Big, powerful stride.
51:50Mary, for someone that's out of breath,
51:52you're talking a lot.
51:54Yeah, and it's my way of coping.
51:56This is it.
51:58Climb a bit.
52:00Oh, the flag!
52:02Oh, my God.
52:06It's got us here.
52:08Now I can see the back.
52:16Come on!
52:18I can do it with your hand right now.
52:20Oh, man.
52:26Oh, my God.
52:48Do you want to do it together?
52:50Yeah.
52:52Gracias.
52:54You were supposed to reach the finish line.
52:56Please sign in
52:58overly to find out
53:00if you have won the race. Ready?
53:02No. OK.
53:08Three, two, one.

53:18Oh, my God!
53:22Oh, my God.
53:24We did it.
53:30Speechless.
53:32When you open that book
53:34and there's no other names in it,
53:36there's no other feeling like it.
53:38I'm just glad we flipped the coin.
53:44To have a great experience and win
53:46is just the best.
53:48It's the best. I can confirm it's the best feeling ever.

53:56Sorry, it's the cold air.
54:08I'm so proud of you.

54:40It's been exhilarating.
54:42It's been tough.
54:44It's been so frustrating at times.
54:46But we've been there for each other.
54:48The good and the bad, ups and downs.
54:50It just proves we're a great team.
54:52The winning team.
54:56Look how much we experienced along the way.
54:58So much.
55:00First time hiking, never rode a horse,
55:02never been to a lagoon, never been to a sand dune.
55:04And it goes on.
55:06It's a journey that I'll remember for my whole life.

55:26We didn't have enough money to get the cable car.
55:28If we didn't work yesterday, we wouldn't have got here.
55:30Doesn't matter though, you guys won.
55:32Yay, you won!
55:34Well done.

56:10Yeah, some teams probably did.
56:12If they had no money, they would have had to.
56:14No thanks.
