00:00So I got a little treat for you guys.
00:16Very very rarely do I get a plug-in ahead of time to play around with and that's today's
00:22exception on a real home recording and that it would be the good old, well not good old,
00:29the good new iZotope Plasma.
00:34This is a plug-in that offers dynamic saturation.
00:38I'm assuming they did some kind of machine learning on different sections of a mix, including
00:45the mix bus.
00:48Basically what it does is it fills in the gaps where you want it to be and where it
00:55thinks it should be and you have just a few controls which is nice because similar to
01:01an LA-2A or an LA-3A or a Pultec EQ, the simpler the better as long as it sounds good.
01:08That's the way I like to put it.
01:10And so just to go down the list, presets over here.
01:14We have the all-important Delta Listen Control which allows us to hear the difference between
01:21the processed audio and the unprocessed audio.
01:26And really where this comes in handy the most is with our Overdrive Control and obviously
01:32the Flux Saturate Control.
01:35Both of these affect the amount of harmonics, the amount of distortion that's going on.
01:40The further to the left, or I should say counterclockwise, further to the left on the overdrive slider,
01:47the cleaner it is.
01:49Attack and release, how much the harmonics are affected dynamically.
01:54Attack and release, you know, the quicker, the lower the number.
02:01And if you go really slow then it changes slower.
02:06Alt-click takes us back to the default.
02:08I don't mess around with this too much and the main thing for me was actually this control
02:15right here which allows us to just focus the saturation in a given frequency range.
02:24So you pick this one where you want to start it.
02:26So it's essentially a high-pass filter, low-pass filter so that you're only affecting the area
02:36that you want to affect with the saturation.
02:40Very powerful control.
02:41Do not underestimate it.
02:44So what I'm going to do, if you're wondering why I have these other plugins going, this
02:49is actually the start of my 5 Plugins, 1 Mix series and my equalization for this one is
02:59going to be Zaffer from Acoustica Audio, VLA-3A from Black Rooster, Blue Cat Late Replies
03:08for delay and the reverb is the Sunset Sound Studio Reverb from IK Multimedia.
03:15But because I don't have those three, I'm not going to have them up there and Zaffer
03:21is just going to have to wait because this video is all about plasma.
03:26So let's get started.
03:27I'm going to load up all my tracks with different plas- I keep wanting to call it plasma.
03:35So plasma it is.
03:37The one thing I don't see on here is the ability to resize the GUI so maybe that'll
03:43come with the full version, I'm not sure.
03:47This is a pretty affordable plugin, I believe it's going to have a $29, well I'll just put
03:54that information on screen, okay, so I don't mess it up because I don't have my notes in
03:59front of me.
04:00So let's get started.
04:01Alright, so this is the first time I'm hearing all of these tracks.
04:07I'm not going to play them simultaneously.
04:09In fact, you know what guys, I'm going to load plasma on the rest of these tracks so
04:14that I'm not taking up your time as I show this plugin off.
04:18Alright, so first of all, let's show off a electric guitar distorted.
04:25So let's try it.
05:06I'm going to be honest with you guys, I'm using this remote software to do this and
05:30it's throwing out some audio artifacts and I'm not sure if that's a part of the mix or
05:36not.
06:06You know what I'm going to do is just duplicate this and then have one effect the low mids
06:25more than the highs.
06:42Okay that sounds alright.
06:43Now adjust this before I even start.
07:13And then really what you want to do is hear if it sounds good without it or worse.
09:13Alright, now the final test, put it on the other track, hard pan the one I was just doing
09:40to the left and hear how it sounds before and after.
09:49Like I said, the computer I'm using, the Windows 10 computer, it's definitely slower than the
09:56one I'm used to.
10:00Before I do anything, I'm going to hit save.
10:25I do like that.
10:26Alright, let's move on to another instrument.
10:29So let's try it on the drum overheads.
10:36Okay yeah, these need some work.
10:38So what did I do?
10:40Drums, full kit.
10:41See, I wasn't sure if I should pick drums full kit for the overheads, where's it at?
10:51Okay, drums full kit or drum cymbals.
10:56Because full kit to me is like a drum bus with the close mics and cymbals is like the
11:02overheads, right?
11:03Maybe?
11:04See, I'm not sure, so I'm just going to choose full kit and see what happens.
11:21Okay, it wants to add low end, so...
12:21Okay, that's the biggest difference I've heard so far.
12:50In a positive way.
12:52So I'm going to keep that on there for that.
12:55Snare drum I think also sounded pretty good.
12:59So let me remove that from the tom before I forget.
13:04I might go back to the kit, or I mean the kick, ugh, I don't know.
13:09I'll try it on the snare next.
13:11Let's see if that does anything useful.
13:14Oh yeah, this sounds a little thick.
13:44What do you guys think, did I overdo it?
14:14That's cool, let's go back to the kick drum.
14:43I think that sounds really good, really good.
14:46I may back down on it a little bit, but yeah, so the idea behind this, it's kind of like
14:54what a microphone preamp does to a sound where it shapes it and you're getting a different
15:02sound without EQing, but I mean it is an EQ, it's not really an EQ, it's harmonics, but
15:09whatever it's doing, it's making things sound clearer and add depth to it, and honestly
15:17where I really heard the biggest difference was when they were using the product demonstrator.
15:23He was showing us off on full mixes, and I don't have a full mix to show this off on,
15:29but I think I'm convinced enough where, I mean with everything I say guys, go check
15:37it out for yourself.
15:39If this video has piqued your interest, go check out some Plasma, but I'm definitely
15:46using this as my one and only saturation plug-in on my first five plug-ins, one mix video.
16:08I think the difference is obvious, let's give the bass a little listen before I stop recording
16:37this video.
17:07Okay, I'm not sure what difference it will make, but that answered my question, right?
17:28I don't know what difference it'll make, we'll check the Delta, listen Adam!
17:32So anyway, I'll do a bypass too.
17:48Oh yeah, that made a difference, I'll leave it at 4 just so it's not too much, and did
17:53I have anything else?
17:55Oh, clean electric guitar, let's try that.
17:59Hey, what's up with that?
18:10Okay, that'll be interesting, let's see where it wants to add it.
18:15Interesting!
19:15I didn't like what it was doing to the low end.
19:46Okay, that's a little something, so I'll keep that on, I'll keep going with my mix.
19:52So what I'm going to do with this is on Real Home Recording 2, you're going to get basically
19:59me twiddling with all the knobs and buttons on all that, pretty much in its entirety,
20:05except for the initial loading of all the plug-ins on all the different tracks, but
20:11then I'm going to make a more concise video showing off the plug-ins.
20:16I may not even record myself mixing, I don't know, it just depends on a few different factors,
20:23but I will explain what choices I made and all that in the concise video.
20:32So thank you all for watching, go check out iZotope Plasma for yourself.
20:38I don't know how long of a trial you get, I think typically it's either 14 days or maybe
20:45even 30 days, and that's about it.
20:48Thank you all for watching.
