A devastating combo of strong winds and unusually high tides at noon brought waves slamming into seaside spots in Penang on Tuesday (Sept 17), forcing many to look for shelter.

Areas such as the Esplanade were hit hard, with seawater gushing into Medan Renong food court.

00:30These incidents lasted less than an hour, but left the area a devastating mess with
00:34lots to clean up.
00:36Over on the mainland, restaurants in Pantai Bersai also took the brunt of waves crashing
00:41into them.
00:42Floors caved in at a restaurant, and strong currents were seen slamming into the back
00:47of other outlets.
00:48The beach in Bagan Ajam nearby, usually popular in the evenings, was similarly bashed by strong
00:54waves.
00:55Unfortunately, no casualties were reported in the incidents.
00:59It is said tides rose up to 2.8 meters high at about 12 p.m.
01:05It is also expected that tides will reach up to three meters for the next two days.
01:10For safety, visitors are advised to refrain from visiting the jetties and coastal areas
01:15during high tides.
01:17Penang has been lashed by bad weather over the past three days, with trees uprooted in
01:22almost 200 areas, and flash floods reported in over 70 areas.
