Our teenage dream, Katy Perry, stops by the Hard Rock Hotel in New York to have a chat with Mike Adam on all things music, family and the 143 era!
Transcript
00:00What's up? It's Mike Adam. I am here at the Rockstar Suite at the Hard Rock Hotel New York with Katy Perry.
00:08We have so much to celebrate. First of all, thank you for being here.
00:12Of course. I feel like a rock star.
00:15I know. They do a nice job up here. But we were talking a little bit off camera about our kids.
00:21And I got to tell you, my son has made me re-fall in love with your song, Birthday.
00:26He is obsessed.
00:27Thank God it wasn't Peacock.
00:29Yes, thank God.
00:31That's really cute.
00:33He loves his birthday, so it makes sense. He asked, how many sleeps until my birthday?
00:37Is this his first one since he's four that he really is super aware of?
00:41I feel like he was aware of his third birthday, but now it's just like he wants...
00:49Birthday cake?
00:50He anticipates the celebration. Oh yeah, he wants the cake.
00:52Whenever it's anyone's birthday, it's like, is there going to be cake?
00:56Yes.
00:57What was his theme?
00:59Last year, we did subway trains.
01:03It was like we got to get a little crafty and do subway themed stuff.
01:09And we had the special conductor hats and stuff like that.
01:12It was really cute.
01:13This year, we did princesses.
01:17He loves dresses and stuff like that, so that was an easy one.
01:21But what about Daisy? Do you get into the themes a lot?
01:23This year, we had to pivot, but we just did mermaids on the sand.
01:28She actually had a mermaid come. She was very excited.
01:31Cute, cute, cute.
01:32It's so funny. She loves these chocolate gold coins,
01:35and I hide them whenever we're at the beach in her sandcastles.
01:39So she'll dig and she'll feel like she's really found old pirates' treasure and their chocolate coins.
01:45And it's very sweet.
01:47And I actually have the song Lifetimes from my album.
01:51It's so funny. I tell her every night,
01:53Will you find me in every lifetime?
01:54And she's started to say,
01:55Yes, mommy, and we'll find chocolate gold coins together too.
01:59Beautiful.
02:00I know. Don't you cry every day?
02:01Yes. So I was going to ask you, is that her new favorite song or is it still Daisy's?
02:05Or what's her current favorite Katy Perry song?
02:07She loves Lifetimes, and yes, her current favorite is now Roar.
02:13Okay.
02:14The Roar one, the tiger one, mommy.
02:16Mommy tiger.
02:18Or, you know, I run a foundation called Firework Foundation.
02:21We run a camp and she's been with me and she calls camp fireworks song.
02:28So it just melts my heart.
02:30I took her to, oh my gosh, have you taken your son to the Gazillions of Bubbles show here yet?
02:35Yes.
02:36Whoa, I took Daisy there and she went on stage.
02:39She got to be one of the volunteers and I was in tears watching her just be so confident and beautiful.
02:44And, like, on stage, it just melted my heart.
02:48You have to take your kids.
02:49Yeah, but you got to – here's a word to the wise.
02:52You have to sit in, like, the first or second row.
02:55Yeah, we sat in the third row, which Orlando was grateful for because he's like,
02:59please don't get bubbles on this fit.
03:02Wait, so did you go in the thing to the side of the stage where you could stand in the bubble?
03:06I didn't get to do that, but they did, like, a whole thing on stage and Daisy got called.
03:10Adorable.
03:11She was like – they put four little kids in bubbles.
03:14You're not allowed to not tell me this.
03:16What's she going to be for Halloween?
03:17Do you know yet?
03:21So last year I put her in a costume.
03:23She's like – she wanted to be a witch.
03:25I don't know where – I think she loves, like, the spooky stuff sometimes that she'll find on, like, Netflix.
03:30I'm like, what are you watching?
03:32But I put her in a Daisy Duck outfit with, like, duck feet.
03:40And dad was Donald Duck with a Donald Duck shirt, and they had duck feet together, and she looked so cute.
03:46Because I think – I'm such a huge fan of Disney.
03:48I think I might have subliminally named her after Daisy Duck.
03:53It's okay.
03:54So that worked.
03:55This year we're still on the fence.
03:56I think maybe, like – I found this really funny one that's, like, the women of the suffrage movement.
04:03Okay.
04:04And since voting is such an important issue right now, I thought,
04:07why not be a little cultural, a little pop culture about that?
04:12So her and her best friend might go as, like, a turn-of-the-century suffrage movement.
04:16So then you're not going to get into the theme.
04:18I love that.
04:19That's adorable.
04:20But you won't piggyback on that?
04:21I was not there last year because I was doing a show in Vegas.
04:25But this year, I don't know.
04:27We'll figure it out.
04:28But I'm just so excited because I don't think I've ever been trick-or-treating with her yet.
04:34She's only gone once so far because she's only four.
04:37So this year will definitely be something.
04:39We'll probably do something together as a family.
04:41Cute, cute, cute.
04:42I dress up so much and get so involved that, like –
04:44You really do.
04:45You know.
04:46I love the costumes over the years.
04:47I do, like, go deep, like, on Etsy and try and buy, like, a used E.T. costume.
04:52Listen, we are the same person.
04:54Yes, because on Etsy you got these, like, grandmas that all they do now is make costumes for these children.
05:00Yeah, or there's old stuff, like, archive stuff from, like, random, like, theme parks or –
05:05Yes.
05:06And you literally can, like –
05:07Or, like, mascots from the corner that you can just buy.
05:10That's my tea.
05:11Boom.
05:12Yeah.
05:13So with this new album, I know on 143 you have some features on there.
05:17Was there anyone you discussed, like, collaborating with that it ended up falling apart beforehand
05:23and maybe we could potentially get for, like, a deluxe or the next album?
05:26Well, I'd hold that secret then for the future.
05:30All I know is that the 21 Savage collab on Gimme Gimme is really hypnotic and super fun.
05:37I'm so excited for people to hear it.
05:39You've been doing this too long.
05:40You were like, let's circle back to what is –
05:42Why talk about something that hasn't yet happened that is still swirling?
05:46You know what I'm saying?
05:47Yeah.
05:48So let's land it in reality.
05:50So did you have a song that was the easiest to come together on this album and the song that was the hardest?
05:56For 143, the song that was the easiest – gosh, they all have their layers and they're all kind of easy to, like, write and stuff.
06:13It's just when you're actually tracking them and pulling your sleeves up and doing the hard work and getting it right and finding the pocket.
06:19I would say the hardest one to come together probably was Gorgeous just because there was some rewrites on that just to get that right.
06:28Because it's a simple, beautiful, sexy song.
06:31Sure.
06:32And we just wanted to – that's featuring Kim Petras, and we just wanted to attack it with just that feeling of, like, I don't know.
06:40Like, you want to – even if you don't do makeup tutorials, you want to do a reveal when you hear this song.
06:46You want to go and walk somewhere catwalk style or do a slow motion or do some piece of, like, I don't know, creative content with it.
06:56It just feels like a reveal song, but it just makes you feel like you also just want to call your girlfriends and go out.
07:02I love it.
07:03What was the component, the last component to come together in that song where it clicked and you were like, ah, yes, okay?
07:09It was just deciding on – like, we wrote a couple of different verses, and some of it got scrapped, and some of it stayed, and then just a delivery of different verses.
07:19It's just like melody is so important.
07:22Yeah.
07:23That's what really is the hook in all of it.
07:25And then the line is the lyrics, you know?
07:29Okay.
07:30So you've got to have both in order to catch the fish.
07:32So I imagine you played your family this album and –
07:37I don't sit them down and play them.
07:39I play, like, little bits and pieces, yeah.
07:41Oh, so there's not, like, a listening party with the fam?
07:44They've had enough of me.
07:47I mean, they're fine, but they're, like, they're my family.
07:51They, like, tell me to move or take the trash out.
07:55They're not, like, you know, sycophants.
07:58Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:59But, I mean, you know what?
08:00It's family.
08:01They're just going to be real.
08:02Yeah.
08:03You know?
08:04So, like, I don't do a listening party.
08:05But, like, I will play things to Orlando's son who's 13,
08:09and he has a really good ear.
08:10So he's the soundboard a little bit, huh?
08:12He's probably the best person out of my whole family, yeah, to –
08:17Anything he sent you back to the drawing board on?
08:20He loved Never Really Over.
08:22Okay, okay.
08:23And I played that to him before it came out,
08:25and I was like, what do you think?
08:26And he's like, yeah, this is good.
08:28So he's got good taste.
08:30He loves this song called All the Love, which is on 143,
08:35and that's, like, one of my favorite songs that I wrote.
08:37Sure.
08:38Is there anyone in the industry, outside of family,
08:40is there anyone in the industry that you confide in
08:43for that feedback on stuff as your process is going along?
08:48Yeah, my best girlfriend, she actually –
08:51she works at Apple Music.
08:53Okay.
08:54And we used to run a record label together.
08:56She used to work with me at my record label.
08:58I have a small, small little label that I have a couple artists on
09:03and producers and writers.
09:06And she's got such great taste.
09:08Like, for instance, she sent me Ocean Eyes by Billie Eilish,
09:13and, I mean, she was like, this is the next best thing.
09:16She sent me Chapel, like, when Chapel's record came out,
09:20like a year ago.
09:22She knew Adele before Adele was Adele.
09:26She's always, like, a number one pop music fan.
09:28She's got incredible taste, and she's got a huge standard.
09:32So I play things for her, and I'm like, what's –
09:35you know, what are your thoughts?
09:37Give me –
09:38Yeah, yeah.
09:39But she's – yeah, she's my best friend.
09:41And Sarah Hudson, who's written a lot on my record
09:44and previous records.
09:46We wrote Dark Horse together, and she's written on all over –
09:49I mean, Dua Lipa's record.
09:51She wrote Levitating.
09:52She's like a master writer.
09:53Huge.
09:54Those two girls, we call each other –
09:57our chat name is Funky, Hip, and Glam.
10:01It's really cheesy.
10:02I love it.
10:03It's so bad.
10:04Listen, I got my wife locked into my –
10:06I think I'm Glam.
10:09I think Lauren's Funky and Sarah's Hip.
10:12It's so good.
10:13But, yeah, it's really cheesy.
10:15So they're actually going to come with me to Brazil
10:17because that's when the record is out, you know,
10:20and they'll be there to celebrate.
10:22Talking about all these new artists
10:24and having kind of your finger on, like,
10:26the people that are on the cusp and popping off,
10:29you obviously are in tune with that with American Idol.
10:33And Benson Boone, last time I talked to him,
10:36he said he hadn't talked to you since the show.
10:38Has that changed?
10:39No.
10:40Still?
10:41Still.
10:42I mean, I just started to really go deep into promo mode.
10:44So I think I'll probably get the chance to see him very soon,
10:48which is exciting because then I'll just be like,
10:50Ha-ha!
10:51Yeah.
10:52I told you so.
10:53Seriously.
10:54My crystal ball was correct.
10:55You knew.
10:56Well, no, I mean, there was no denying.
10:58It was pretty obvious.
10:59And he's the one that's put in all the hard work
11:01and has all the talent and the adorable mustache.
11:03I love it.
11:05Before we wrap, we're here at the Rockstar Suite,
11:08obviously, at the Hard Rock Hotel.
11:10Lots of wonderful things have been done here.
11:13Party like a rock star.
11:14Yeah.
11:15And if you were out on the patio on the roof deck
11:18and you had your beverage of choice in hand,
11:22watching maybe the sunset and the beautiful skyline,
11:25what song off the new album could you play
11:28that would enhance that experience?
11:31I'd have a skinny Cosmo with Belvedere
11:36and I would play Gorgeous.
11:42Because I would say, Oh, gosh, the sunset's gorgeous.
11:44It's been a gorgeous day and I feel gorgeous
11:46and I'm ready for the night.
11:47I love it.
11:48Katy Perry, congratulations on everything.
11:50Thanks so much.
11:51Thank you so much for the time.
