00:00A pleasant Monday afternoon to all.
00:08I am William Thio and this is PTV News Now.
00:11We begin this afternoon's stories with the government directives raising daily wages
00:16of typical workers in the agriculture, non-agriculture, retail and service sectors have come few and
00:24far in between, hence a shared feeling among all of them that they are just working their
00:29lives away with no end in sight.
00:32Well for those aforementioned and marginalized workers trying to eke out a living in the
00:37Calabarzon, a modicum of relief perhaps with the announcement by the Regional Tripartite
00:42Wages and Productivity Board of wage order 4A-21 upgrading the daily wages of Calabarzon
00:51workers in the agriculture, non-agriculture and those in the retail and service sectors
00:57with no more than 10 workers in the payroll by $21 and up to $75.
01:05Non-agriculture workers based in component cities or 4th, 5th and 6th class municipalities
01:10will receive their pay raises in two trenches beginning September 30 for the first in April
01:16next year and for the second one.
01:18Meanwhile, the pay raise of agriculture workers is scheduled for the end of September this
01:23year for the first one and on April the 1st next year for the second.
01:29All other workers will receive theirs beginning and September this year.
01:34On the other hand, the Regional Tripartite and Wages Productivity Board also announced
01:39wage order number RO7-25 granting a daily minimum wage increase of up to 33 up to 43
01:49pesos in the provinces of Region 7 such as the daily minimum wages in the region is
01:54raised to 501 pesos for Class A workers from 458 to 468, 463 for Class B workers from 425
02:07pesos and 430 pesos and 553 for Class C workers from 415 to 420 pesos.
02:16The wage order kicks in or takes effect on October 2 next month.
02:23And with less than two months remaining before the America's electorate of some 200 million
02:29registered voters head to the polls to choose its next president and vice president, yet
02:34another act of political violence on the life of former President Donald Trump has been
02:39averted thanks to the eagle eyes of Trump's security and the Secret Service guarding him
02:45while he played on a Sunday at his golf course in West Palm Beach.
02:50Barely two months have passed since that fateful day and weekend in a rural town in Pennsylvania
02:56where former President Donald J. Trump came millimeters away from being felled by an assassin's
03:02bullet that had just grazed his right ear.
03:05This time another threat on his life came nowhere close with the alleged assassin suspect
03:11some 500 yards away and unable to fire his AK-47 looking rifle as members of the Secret
03:18Service spotted the barrel of his rifle from afar and then fired preemptively to send him
03:23scurrying away and fleeing the site.
03:26Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, a construction worker from North Carolina, was arrested after the
03:32black Nissan truck he drove was identified by an eyewitness who reported it to the local
03:38authorities in West Palm Beach, Florida.
03:42President Joe Biden expressed relief after hearing the news of Trump being safe on this
03:46foiled attempt on his life.
03:49Vice President Kamala Harris, for her part, said she is deeply disturbed on yet another
03:54assassination attempt on the life of her rival for the race to the White House.
04:01Immigration is among the top three issues for American voters in the November 2024 presidential.
04:07While Trump made a vow on mass deportations and Harris insisting to resurrect the bipartisan
04:13Bill Trump and his House allies effectively killed in the House floor, there are no specifics
04:19as of yet to a clear policy on both sides.
04:23The OA's immigration reporter Aline Barrios reports.
04:29Immigration was a big topic during the first presidential debate.
04:33While Vice President Kamala Harris didn't answer a question about the increased numbers
04:38of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border, former President Donald Trump repeated his false
04:43claims about migrants and crime.
04:47Millions of people let in and all over the world, crime is down all over the world except
04:52here.
04:53Research shows immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than the U.S.-born people.
04:59But at his rallies, Trump maintains his hard line on immigration, promising to build on
05:06his previous efforts if reelected.
05:09If I win on day one, we will begin the largest deportation operation in American history.
05:15Immigration experts have questions.
05:18What exactly are we talking about here?
05:20Is it, you know, are there going to be police and immigration officers showing up at everyone's
05:25door and asking to see their papers?
05:27When Harris was asked about illegal crossings at the border, which surged under the Biden
05:33administration before falling back in recent months, she shifted the blame to Trump, noting
05:40he had Republicans in Congress kill a bipartisan immigration reform bill.
05:46And let me say that the United States Congress, including some of the most conservative members
05:51of the United States Senate, came up with a border security bill, which I supported.
05:57And that bill would have put 1,500 more border agents on the border.
06:02Experts stress that without action from Congress, real immigration reform is out of reach.
06:08Neither one of them talked about the importance of Congress.
06:10And I feel like there's only, you know, the president makes a huge difference.
06:15And we would, you know, there's a lot a president can do.
06:19But there also are limits to what a president can do.
06:21At an Arizona rally, Harris reminded the crowd that as president, she would sign an immigration
06:27bill.
06:28We know our immigration system is broken and we know what it takes to fix it.
06:36Comprehensive reform that includes strong border security and an earned pathway to citizenship.
06:48It is unlikely Harris and Trump will share the debate stage again.
06:53Voters will need to follow their immigration plans closely as they continue on the campaign
06:58trail.
06:59Aline Barrows, VOA News, Washington.
07:02And that is a wrap for this afternoon.
07:06Join us anew later this evening for the next set of breaking stories.
