00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today, we're sitting back, grabbing our popcorn, and reliving some
00:11of the God of War series' best cinematic moments.
00:21Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified
00:25about our latest videos.
00:29That's what comes next, God of War Ragnarok.
00:42There's little doubt Odin has been a shadow over the Nine Realms for as long as history
00:47has been written, and even as Kratos brings Ragnarok to the All-Father's doorstep, he's
00:52not going to give up his pursuit of knowledge, even in the face of inevitable defeat.
00:57Already near death, Odin swears he will never stop until he knows what comes next, which
01:03prompts Atreus to lock his soul away in one of the giant soul marbles.
01:07Now completely harmless, Kratos, Atreus, and Freya weigh the options of what to do with
01:13the mad god, while Sindri knows exactly what Odin deserves.
01:17Having lost his brother directly by Odin's hand, Sindri had become a shell of his former
01:22self, instead fueled by vengeance and hatred for the once-feared god of Asgard.
01:28While no one could blame Sindri for his actions, seeing the once-timid dwarf consumed by his
01:33thirst for revenge is still incredibly heartbreaking.
01:37That's what comes next.
01:49Kratos' Hope, God of War III
01:56By the end of God of War III, it's obvious Kratos' quest for revenge against the gods
02:01has been very detrimental to the entire world itself.
02:06Massive floods, all plant life withering away, the entire sun going dark, the cost of Kratos'
02:12revenge was the end of the world.
02:14However, as Athena explains, when Kratos opened Pandora's box, he unleashed Hope, which could
02:21be used to rebuild the world anew, and Athena wants to be the one to do it.
02:27After demanding Kratos give her the keys to humanity's salvation, Kratos instead decides
02:32to give Hope back to the people, and leave their fate in their hands instead of another
02:36god.
02:37Plunging the Blade of Olympus into his chest, Athena chastises the former god of war for
02:43his arrogance, and then abandons him to his fate.
02:47It's an extremely powerful moment that shows not only the start of Kratos' growth, but
02:52also the cost of his vengeance.
03:00Kratos and Atreus' journey into the world of Midgard had already been much more than
03:18they bargained for, but after arriving at the Lake of Nine and finding nothing but flooded
03:22ruins, it would seem their journey had come to a premature conclusion.
03:27However, after finding a statue that calls for the Traveler to sacrifice your arms to
03:32the center of the water, Kratos hurls the Leviathan Axe into the waves.
03:37Only this time, the weapon does not return, and the pair's boat is instead nearly swallowed
03:42in a tsunami as the lake suddenly seems to awaken.
03:46Father and son watch in awe as the world serpent Jormungandr rises from the waves and not only
03:52returns Kratos' axe, but also speaks to them.
03:56Sony Santa Monica absolutely nailed the scale of the world serpent here, as the beast dwarfs
04:01nearly every other creature Kratos has ever faced up to this point.
04:06Betrayer, God of War Ragnarok.
04:21Something had seemed off with Tyr ever since Kratos and Atreus rescued him from his prison,
04:34but most simply chalked his new demeanor up to PTSD from being in Odin's captivity for so long.
04:41However, Brock was never buying it.
04:44As the group strategizes their plans to attack Asgard and bring about Ragnarok,
04:49Brock makes his suspicions known and relentlessly questions Tyr about his actions
04:54until, unable to withstand any more harassment, Odin drops the veil entirely
04:59and stabs Brock in the chest, attempting to silence his relentless rambling for good.
05:05Understandably confused and angry, the group surrounds Odin attempting to prevent his escape,
05:11while Sindri calls for aid for his brother slowly dying in his arms.
05:16As Brock fades, he and Sindri share one final moment before Sindri absconds with
05:21Brock into parts unknown. A twist and a heartbreak few, if any,
05:26saw coming, and handled masterfully even with the unbreaking camera movements.
05:42Two Knives, God of War 2018
05:46The discovery of Tyr's vault is not only a major turning point for the story of God of War 2018,
05:58but also for Kratos and Atreus.
06:01Having recently learned of his godlike heritage,
06:04Kratos gifts him a knife he made for him the day he was born.
06:08Along with the knife, Kratos imparts his advice to his son, and shares his hope that Atreus will
06:13be the better version of him and to use his powers intelligently and for the greater good.
06:18This newfound bond is further strengthened on their ascension from the vault,
06:23when the pair share a drink of the wine from Kratos' homeland of Greece.
06:27A beautiful father and son moment from beginning to end.
06:36It is the nature of the thing, God of War Ragnarok.
06:43But we're going to the nature of the thing.
06:47I was almost following him for the moment there.
06:49God of War Ragnarok gave players a chance to explore new areas of the realms,
06:54and even get Brock and Sindri out of their shop,
06:56and further explore their relationship with Kratos and Atreus.
07:00During their trek to forge a new weapon for Kratos using the Dropnir Ring,
07:04Brock can barely contain his excitement meeting the lady,
07:07who unfortunately appears completely indifferent to him.
07:11It's at this moment Brock realizes he died,
07:14and Sindri revived him, but lost a part of his soul in doing so.
07:19Seeing his longtime friend distraught, Kratos asks Brock to bless his new weapon,
07:25and upon Brock rejecting his proposal, Kratos reminds Brock of his own words.
07:30It is the nature of a thing that matters, not its form.
07:35Reminding Brock that even without all of his soul, he is still the man he is,
07:40and Brock's blessing would become more true than we could ever realize in the coming moments.
07:46May this weapon strike true.
07:50May it be wielded with wisdom.
07:53May it be put down when its job is done.
07:59The Stranger, God of War 2018
08:02I thought you'd be bigger.
08:05You're definitely the one.
08:07Um, long way from home, aren't you?
08:11Having shielded themselves from the outside world using Faye's runes since before Atreus' birth,
08:17a knock at the door and a demand of an audience is understandably concerning.
08:22Hiding Atreus away beneath the floorboards, Kratos finds a heavily tattooed man at his door,
08:27who he promptly demands leave his home.
08:30When he does not abide, Kratos quickly dispatches him,
08:34only to be sucker-punched over the entirety of his cabin.
08:38The battle that ensues changes the landscape of the surrounding area,
08:42and starts the father and son pair on the journey to spread Faye's ashes.
08:46The brilliance of the surprise attack and battle against the god Baldur
08:51not only establishes the stakes of this new realm,
08:54but also paints Kratos in a much more vulnerable light,
08:57as the aging God of War becomes beaten and bruised
09:01in a battle his younger self could have easily walked away from.
09:06Carry your things. We are leaving.
09:10Freya's Missing Piece, God of War Ragnarok.
09:13The sword was forged for the ceremony.
09:17A symbol of our union.
09:20Odin put Freya through absolute hell after their arranged marriage,
09:25holding her captive from her native realm, cursing her to remain trapped under his control.
09:30After finally breaking free, Kratos assists Freya in retrieving her blade,
09:35while reliving her memories with her of her wedding day to Odin,
09:39which was supposed to be a union of the realms before the inevitable betrayal.
09:43Unable to retrieve the sword from the stone, instead of offering aid,
09:48Kratos chooses to allow Freya to come to the realization
09:51that as much as she despises Odin and Asgard,
09:54it has become a part of her, and through her acceptance, the stone relinquishes the sword.
10:00The scene was a powerful moment not only for Freya,
10:03but also for her actress Danielle Nicole Busutti,
10:06who reportedly would leave the floor mat covered in tears during her performance.
10:12The pain he caused is his.
10:16I refuse to keep holding on to it.
10:19Reunited and torn apart, God of War Chains of Olympus.
10:25Why did you go?
10:26I am here now, child, and I will not leave you again.
10:32The guilt of Kratos unwittingly killing his own wife and daughter
10:36haunts him and his allegiance to the gods.
10:39So when given the opportunity to reunite with daughter Calliope in the fields of Elysium,
10:44Kratos understandably agrees without question.
10:48However, it was only by relinquishing the magical abilities he'd acquired on his journey
10:52would he be allowed to be with her.
10:55Reunited at last, Persephone lays out her plan for mankind's and the gods of Olympus' destruction
11:01as payback for abandoning her to Hades and the underworld.
11:05Unable to let all of humanity and the world be destroyed,
11:09Kratos must once again leave Calliope behind,
11:12this time forced by the player's actions,
11:15and ignore her screams and pleas for him not to go
11:18while she clutches to him as tightly as her little hands can hold.
11:22Truly heartbreaking for a man who had already lost so much to the gods.
11:28At that moment, Kratos knew his destiny was not with Calliope.
11:34The fates were never that kind.
11:38The Dragon of the Mountain
11:40God of War 2018
11:43Can you kill something that big?
11:45There aren't many large-scale boss battles in God of War 2018
11:49in the way long-time fans are used to,
11:51but the Dragon of the Mountain fight is easily one of the most memorable in the game,
11:56if only for its fanservice final moments.
12:00After encountering one of the last remaining dragons in all the realms tormenting Porcindyre,
12:05Kratos and Atreus attempt to rescue the frightened dwarf
12:08with Kratos doing much of the heavy lifting during the encounter.
12:12After finally besting the beast thanks to Atreus' assistance,
12:16Kratos brings down the mighty dragon and triumphantly stands in its shadow
12:20as the dragon collapses in front of him,
12:22with Kratos standing squarely between the dead dragon's mighty jaws.
12:27It's easily one of Kratos' most badass moments in the series,
12:31which is saying quite a lot given his storied history.
12:40Bound by the Gods
12:41God of War
12:42The harpy had been sent as a warning,
12:45a reminder from his former master of the decision that had cost Kratos
12:51The catalyst for all the misfortune in Kratos' life,
12:54the Spartan's unwillingness to lose a battle cost him more than he could ever have imagined.
13:00Standing against the might of the indomitable barbarians,
13:03with his final moments before him,
13:05Kratos calls out to Ares and pledges his undying loyalty to the God in exchange for victory,
13:12which Ares is all too happily to oblige to.
13:15To solidify this new allegiance,
13:17Ares gifts Kratos the Blades of Chaos,
13:20carried in on the wings of harpies,
13:22and are molded to his flesh through chains that burn themselves to his skin.
13:26Kratos claims victory without a second thought to the consequences of his actions,
13:30his arrogance soon to be his undoing.
13:43Don't Be Sorry
13:44God of War 2018
13:46What are we hunting?
13:47You are hunting deer.
13:53Which way?
13:54In the direction of deer.
13:56God of War 2018 quickly establishes the rift and distance between father and son
14:01right from the start of the game,
14:02and this is never clearer than during the moments after lighting Faye's funeral pyre
14:06when the pair go hunting.
14:08Kratos, attempting to gauge the boy's skills, allows him to lead the hunt,
14:13but Atreus' over-eagerness to earn his father's approval instead backfires
14:18and garners his father's rage.
14:20After aggressively attacking the deer they were hunting without a clear shot,
14:24Kratos berates the boy and only barely controls his frustration
14:28before sending Atreus to track the deer once again.
14:36The moment perfectly encapsulates the pair's current dynamic,
14:40and fans even receive a callback to this moment in Ragnarok
14:44when Kratos and Atreus admit how much they need each other,
14:47but also accept their paths may not always be heading in the same direction,
14:51and Atreus reminds Kratos of his words.
14:55Don't be sorry, father.
14:57Be better.
14:59The House Call
15:00God of War Ragnarok
15:01Can I come in?
15:07I have me.
15:09Fans waited a long time for the eventual meetup between Kratos and Thor
15:14after the premonition tease at the end of the previous game,
15:17and Ragnarok most certainly did not disappoint.
15:21Playing out almost the same as Atreus' dream,
15:24Thor arrives at the duo's doorstep,
15:26but instead of immediately attacking them, offers them a drink instead.
15:31Obliging Thor's request, Kratos invites the God of Thunder inside,
15:35where another surprise guest soon makes an appearance,
15:38the Allfather himself, Odin.
15:40The tension during this entire exchange is something straight out of a Tarantino movie,
15:46as Odin reveals he knows all about Atreus' search for the Giants,
15:49as well as offering Kratos the chance to avoid all-out war.
15:54Kratos, understandably, doesn't trust Odin at his word and refuses,
15:58giving Thor the green light to finally start the fight
16:01he'd been itching to get going since he'd arrived.
16:09The Ghost of Sparta, God of War.
16:12Beware, Kratos.
16:15The dangers in the temple are greater than you know.
16:19Kratos' allegiance to Ares brought many challenges,
16:22not only to the Spartan, but also to his family,
16:25something Ares despised and felt was holding Kratos back from his true potential.
16:30Ares finally acted on this impulse and tricked Kratos into burning the village
16:35his wife and daughter were worshipping in,
16:39and in his blind fury, ended their lives by his own hand.
16:43Distraught by what he had done,
16:45the oracle Kratos had ignored earlier curses the Spartan to wear the ashes of his family's remains,
16:51so that all would know of his despicable acts in the name of glory and Ares.
16:57Ares' attempt to make Kratos the ultimate warrior succeeded,
17:01but at the cost of Kratos' humanity, which was replaced by rage and vengeance.
17:06His skin white with the ash of his dead family, the Ghost of Sparta had been born.
17:13Your son has returned, God of War II.
17:17Together, we will destroy the petty gods and we will see Olympus crumble before us!
17:24While the devs at Sony Santa Monica had no idea whether the series would continue past
17:28the first game back in 2005, by the time the sequel released,
17:32Cory Barlog and the devs made sure everyone knew this wasn't the end of Kratos' journey
17:37to kill the gods of Olympus.
17:39After his plan to kill Zeus is foiled by Athena's sacrifice,
17:43Kratos once again travels back through time, but instead of undoing his mistake,
17:47returns with the Titans of old and begins his ascension to the cliffs of Mount Olympus.
17:53As the gods look on at the advancing army,
17:56Kratos proudly proclaims that Zeus' son has returned to finish what he started.
18:01Back in 2007, this was next level hype for the next installment,
18:06which most certainly did not disappoint this brilliant setup,
18:09which picked up immediately after this brilliant line of dialogue.
18:14Zeus, your son has returned!
18:17I bring the destruction of Olympus!
18:22Atreus remains, God of War Ragnarok.
18:26She didn't want us to know her fate.
18:28We forged our own path because of her.
18:32The journey for father and son to the events of Ragnarok were some of the most emotional
18:37and bonding moments in the entire series,
18:39but as the dust settled, Atreus' journey had only begun.
18:44He tells Kratos he thinks he knows where the rest of the giants have gone
18:47and he feels compelled to find them, but that it's something he must do on his own.
18:52For nearly the entirety of the game,
18:54Kratos and Atreus have been preparing one another for a life without them respectively,
18:59and at this moment, Kratos knows this is the path Atreus must walk alone.
19:04But before sending him off, Kratos reminds Atreus he will always be his son,
19:09and that his father is proud of the man he has become, no matter who that is.
19:14Kratos perfectly sums up his love for his son with such a simple but powerful line
19:19before the two embrace for the last time.
19:22Loki will go.
19:26Atreus.
19:30Atreus remains.
19:37Journey's end.
19:38God of War 2018.
19:40This is our story.
19:43No.
19:46This is your story.
19:48Everything has led to this.
19:51All the revelations, the pain and heartache,
19:53and especially the growing bond between father and son,
19:56they set all the events in motion to prepare Kratos and Atreus for a life without her.
20:02As the two finally arrive in Jotunheim, they discover not only the remains of the giants,
20:08but also how Faye was connected to all of it.
20:11As the two finally fulfill her last wish to have her ashes
20:14scattered from the tallest peak in all the realms,
20:17Kratos and Atreus have not only completed their journey,
20:20but have solidified their bond and relationship.
20:23The piece de resistance comes when Atreus tells Kratos the name the giants called him
20:28in the writings isn't Atreus, but Loki,
20:31which sets an entire new set of events in motion for the sequel.
20:35We also get a heartwarming story about the origin of Atreus's name
20:39on the way back down the mountain.
20:41I carried him home on his shield and buried him with all the honors of Spartan custom.
20:47His memory was a comfort in dark times.
20:50Eulachi, God of War Ragnarok.
20:53Brokk's death came as a shock to everyone.
20:56Despite everything that happened in Asgard,
20:59his friends and adoptive family wanted to pay their respects
21:02to the famed blacksmith with one final send-off.
21:05Accompanied by Freya, Kratos attends Brokk's funeral
21:08before everyone gets to say their final goodbyes to the beloved dwarf.
21:12As Kratos lays his friend to rest,
21:15Rey begins to play before a very visibly distraught Sindri
21:19finally appears to give his brother one final goodbye.
21:27As the music swells, Freya lights the arrow and ignites Brokk's pyre
21:31giving him the heroic burial he rightfully deserved.
21:34Even during this moment of unimaginable grief,
21:38Sindri still shuns Kratos' attempt to comfort him,
21:41instead choosing to once again disappear into solitude.
21:45In that moment, Mimir realizes the answer to Brokk's riddle
21:48that had plagued him for the entire game.
21:51Gets me every single time.
22:05Always a monster, God of War 2018.
22:11Spartan, put as much distance between you and the truth as you want.
22:17This is a part of the journey Kratos never expected he'd have to make.
22:21After Atreus falls ill, Freya tells him there's only one thing that can save him.
22:26And knowing what he must do, Kratos is plagued by the vision of Athena
22:30who taunts the God of War that he cannot change who he is
22:34and that he will always be the monster everyone always believed him to be.
22:38As he pulls the blades from under the floorboards and ignites their power once again,
22:43he proclaims that he may be a monster, but he is no longer a puppet of the gods.
22:49This was a moment felt by all longtime fans,
22:52newcomers to the series, and even to Kratos actor Christopher Judge.
22:57The weight of Kratos retrieving the blades he had tried to leave behind to save his son
23:02marked the first steps towards Kratos accepting his past had made him who he was.
23:08Always be a monster.
23:15I know.
23:19But I am your monster no longer.
23:22Acceptance, God of War Ragnarok.
23:26What can I say to you?
23:31Therapy through combat is such a bizarre concept it could really only work for Kratos.
23:36After Tyr invites him to Valhalla to work through his issues with his past,
23:41Kratos is finally forced to confront himself.
23:44Literally.
23:45Standing before his arrogant younger self sitting on the throne of the God of War,
23:49Kratos, afraid of repeating the mistakes of his past,
23:52takes his younger self to task for his decisions that led to the destruction of his life
23:57and everyone and everything around him.
24:00The meticulously written monologue delivered by a career-making performance by Christopher Judge
24:06perfectly encapsulates someone accepting of their past mistakes
24:09by allowing themselves to accept those decisions that made them who they are,
24:14but do not define them or their future.
24:17This moment brings the series' theme of hope full circle as Kratos once again sits on the throne.
24:23This time a new and better version of the God of War.
24:27Well done here then.
24:28So uh, what now?
24:32No.
24:36I believe I would like to sit here for a while.
