00:00Hi, I'm Jyri Helko, and I'm here with Wheel on their very first Headline Tour in the US.
00:18Welcome on board.
00:19Let's start with the bass guitars.
00:20I got two Warwick Streamer models here.
00:23This is the main bass I'm using on this tour.
00:28It's a Streamer Stage 2 model, made in Germany.
00:34I guess it's from 2009.
00:39It's a neck-through model with active neck pickups, Warwick's very own design.
00:47And then the active EQ thing, which I'm not actually using.
00:51I'm only using it on full volume, basically, for the whole set, and everything centered
00:57here.
00:59For the strings, I'm proud to endorse Dunlop strings.
01:03I really love these low-tension ones.
01:06They give so much control of the instrument compared to any strings I've ever used before.
01:12And for the backup, I got this other Warwick Streamer model here.
01:18This is an LX5 model, also made in Germany.
01:24This is a bit older, so this is from 2001, and that means the neck profile is a bit different,
01:31but not that much it makes a difference on playability.
01:36The pickups are the exact same model, and all the adjustments are also exactly the same
01:43as on the main one.
01:45And this also has the active EQ, but with one less knob here.
01:51And also Dunlop strings, and all the usual stuff, Scalar strap locks.
01:59That seems to be the industry standard.
02:02And also, one thing I find really handy is these straps right here.
02:09This is a US-made strap.
02:11The company's called Couch Guitar Straps.
02:14These are 100% vegan, and these are from used car parts, basically.
02:19So it's made of vinyl instead of leather, and that's the perfect combination for me.
02:26And for the in-ears, I'm using Jerry Harvey Audio.
02:29The model I'm using is called Roxanne, and it's really good.
02:34It's really good.
02:36I can hear all the bass notes I'm playing.
02:39I can hear both guitars, although they're in drop C, and all the cymbal hits, all the
02:44drum hits, all the toms are super clear and punchy all the time.
02:50So I wouldn't change these to anything else, now that I've got my first pair like a year ago.
02:56And on this tour, I'm using only the quad quarters, so I'm the only one in the band who hasn't
03:01had a loud amp on stage and a tube head to accompany with.
03:06And that seems to be the winning combo here, because it's super important for us to have
03:12the amps on stage and organic feedback, but for the bass stuff, this is a really handy unit to use.
03:19I basically pre-programmed every single tone I'm using on it, and then made a set list.
03:26So basically every song is programmed here, and all the effects are on the same order.
03:33So in that sense, I'm using this more like a traditional pedal board, rather than a complex unit.
03:40I'm gonna go through the main tones I'm using.
03:43So on the first line, you can see my clean channel here.
03:48And first of all, I'm always using a gate.
03:52And then there's a compressor, which seems to be based on the 1176, but it's named differently.
04:03And then this amp over here is actually my real amp I got back home.
04:09And this is a factory preset, because we're from Finland, in Helsinki, and the company
04:16is based also in Helsinki, run by Douglas Castro and Pancho Cresp.
04:22I was a lucky one to hand my regular amps for them to make the models based on these exactly.
04:30So if somebody's asking if I'm using the preset tones, yes I am, but they are my presets.
04:37This is like a clean-ish amp, so I'd rather use an amp and a cab for the clean tone, rather
04:45than a straight DI sound.
04:48I guess I'm a bit old school on that one.
04:51And then I split the signal here, as you can see, and this row here is the distorted one.
04:59So basically, all of these tones are made that way, that this is my main distorted signal.
05:08And this is also a mess amp, or actually a combination of two different mess amps.
05:13And then, if there's a clean part of the song, I'm gonna press here, and then it changes
05:19this one.
05:22And this is also a mess amp, the very same one, but a little bit less distorted one.
05:28So therefore, I can switch in between the song sections, like how much distortion I
05:33want to use.
05:35And then, on the less distorted one, I also added just a bit of compressor to make it
05:42sound more even.
05:44And then a unity-level gain thing, just to adjust the volume according to the section.
05:55So these two are my main tones.
05:57This one I'm using like 80% of the time, and this is the clean one.
06:02And then there is the Joker.
06:05That's in Finnish, but it means the Joker.
06:06So every time there's a special part in the song, I program this button to be the special
06:13effect sound.
06:14And for the first songs of the set, it's gonna be a super distorted one.
06:18So I added a guitar distortion in front of the amp, to make it extra crunchy and cutting.
06:29And here's the delay section.
06:31So every once in a while, when there's a clean part going on, I'm gonna turn on the delay.
06:38And as you can see, there's not much of it, but it just gives it some space to it, to
06:46make it feel a bit more organic.
06:49And the same logic applies to different songs.
06:52So every time there is gonna be a change, this control here adjusts the gain level of
07:00the amp.
07:01This one is the special thing, and this is the modulation or the delay part of the song.
07:08And this other unit I got here is just a backup, where it has all the exact same patches.
07:14I know that you can basically sync these up, but I'm doing it manually.
07:18There's not that many changes, to be honest.
07:21We got like 13 songs on the set, and as you can see, the three first ones have the exact
07:26same tones on them.
07:28So that leaves me like 10 buttons that I need to press during the whole set.
07:35And on the main pedalboard, I got also a Peterson tuner.
07:40I prefer this, because it's a strobe tuner, compared to this one that's already inside
07:45the unit.
07:46This is a really quick one, and you cannot go wrong with it, so to say.
07:54Peterson seems to be the modern industry standard when it comes to tuning.
07:59And then I'm using this wireless unit.
08:02It's an Audio Technica model, which is already discontinued, but I find it to be the perfect
08:09one for the bass.
08:10All right, thanks for watching.
08:13Come to see we live when we hit your town next time.
