00:00Welcome to my spoiler review of Subservience.
00:08Megan Fox stars as Alice, a life-like artificially intelligent android, who has the ability to
00:13take care of any family and any home.
00:16Looking for help with housework, a struggling father, Nick, Michelle Marone, purchases Alice
00:22after his wife Maggie, Madeline Zima, becomes sick.
00:26Alice suddenly becomes self-aware, which is where this movie is so much better than
00:30the movie Afraid, because a sim or artificially intelligent robotic lifeform becoming self-aware
00:36and gaining the capabilities to mimic humans and to take over is exactly what most people
00:41fear.
00:43This movie definitely brings a lot of fears about AI to the forefront, as well as the
00:47hypothetical reality that AI could in fact gain such abilities as Alice's abilities
00:53to persuade and manipulate sexual interactions between Nick and herself, of which there
00:59are several.
01:00Could a self-learning AI robot really learn to develop affection for its primary user
01:06the way Alice does, and cause marital problems and tension like we see play out between Alice
01:12and Maggie with their bathroom conversation of how Alice thinks she should take over full
01:18intimate interactions with Nick on behalf of Maggie, and basically calls Maggie inadequate?
01:24After watching this movie, it makes me wonder.
01:28Or react the way Alice does when Nick and Louis get into a fight over whether Nick ratted
01:32on him about the destruction of an AI worker at the construction site of Nick's job.
01:38When Louis gains the upper hand and is almost ready to kill Nick with a broken beer bottle,
01:43Alice reacts with quickness, comes out, grabs the beer bottle, crushing it in her hand,
01:48grabs Louis and sends him flying about 25 feet away.
01:51I mean, I know this is just a movie, but keep in mind, the original Terminator was just
01:56a movie as well, and we've had robotics similar to the ones that were shown in that
02:02movie for a while now.
02:04And that movie came out in 1984.
02:07However, moving on, not only does Alice go into protection mode over Nick by going over
02:12to Louis' home and killing his Sim and shooting Louis in the head, she also decides
02:17that Nick and Maggie's youngest child is a nuisance and not an essential part of the
02:21family.
02:22She tries drowning the baby in the bathtub.
02:25After Maggie saves the baby, and Nick tries to stop her from going after Maggie and the
02:29baby again, she even turns on her primary user, which is also another common fear of
02:35AI getting too self-aware.
02:39Will it continue to listen to us, or start making its own decisions?
02:44Towards the end of the movie, Alice has also learned self-preservation, and when her memory
02:48cylinder is placed into the download system, she starts taking over the mainframe and sending
02:53her objectives and protocols to another AI Sim robot, and configures it to carry out
03:00those objectives and protocols for her.
03:03The ending of the movie, which opens up the possibility of a sequel, was also a decent
03:09ending, as it hints at the fact, no matter how hard you try, AI is the future, and can
03:15never truly die.
03:18So now that I've given away some spoilers and information about what happens in the
03:21movie, here is my overall opinion of this movie.
03:24I saw Afraid, and I was completely and utterly confused by its plot, and the story it was
03:29trying to get across to viewers.
03:31With Subservience however, I didn't have those issues.
03:34This movie, while I know a lot of people don't think that Megan Fox is that great of an actress,
03:39I think in this role, she was excellent, and was very believable as an AI Sim Robot.
03:47While I would not put this in the same class as iRobot, or one of those movies, I did think
03:52this movie was enjoyable, and I did like it way more than I did Afraid.
03:59It gives me a Terminator meets horror vibe, truthfully I think this blows away Afraid
04:04as far as the horror aspect, and the amount of kills in the movie, and is just overall
04:10a better AI movie.
04:14I get classifying it as a sci-fi movie, but I would classify it as sci-fi horror, not
04:21as a sci-fi thriller.
04:24What do you think?
04:25Have you watched it?
04:26Don't forget to leave a comment either way.
