00:00Tonight, the loss of a music legend, singer Judith Durham, dies at the age of 79.
00:15This is Nine News with Georgie Gardner.
00:20Good evening. She was the most unlikely of pop stars and yet, while fronting the seekers,
00:26Judith Durham took the world by storm while always remaining staunchly Australian.
00:32Tonight, sad news that after a long battle with ill health, she's died at the age of 79.
00:40She was the voice behind that unmistakable sound of the seekers.
00:45Hey there Georgie girl, there's another Georgie deep inside.
00:51Bring out all the love you hide and never what a change can be.
00:57In the 1960s, Judith Durham was Australian music.
01:01With that signature long brown hair and fringe, she would keep for a lifetime.
01:07Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling.
01:17She learned her craft as a jazz singer, transitioning into that pop folk seekers sound,
01:22which would be a backing track of a generation.
01:25Judith Durham provided the vocals, piano and tambourine as the band broke into the United States
01:32and was the first Australian group to make it big in the UK.
01:37To realise now that we were outselling the Beatles and the Stones at the beginning of 1965, I think it was.
01:43That was the year they topped the charts with this.
01:46There is always someone for each of us today.
01:53And to be my someone forever and a day.
02:01And Georgie girl, the year after.
02:03Hey there Georgie girl, swinging down the street so fancy free.
02:10Nobody you meet could ever see the loneliness there inside you.
02:16Judith and her band, Athol Guy, Keith Podker and Bruce Woodley, together as the Seekers,
02:22were named as Joint Australians of the Year in 1969.
02:26Rock and roll and ride along, all along the way.
02:35That same year she married Ron Edgeworth, who she would later lose to motor neurone disease.
02:41In 1995 the band was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.
02:46But later, in 2013, as they celebrated 50 years in the industry,
02:51Judith Durham suffered a brain hemorrhage backstage at the end of a performance.
02:56Judith Durham died in Melbourne last night. She was 79.
03:01We'll share a dream and sing with one voice.
03:08I am, you are, we are Australian.
03:15Lizzie Pohl, Nine News.
