New York City Police Commissioner Edward Caban resigned Thursday, one week after it emerged that his phone was seized as part of a federal investigation that touched several members of Mayor Eric Adams’ inner circle.

00:00A short time ago, I accepted the resignation of the NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban.
00:08He concluded that this is the best decision at this time.
00:12I respect his decision and I wish him well.
00:17Commissioner Caban dedicated his life to making our city safer,
00:21and we saw a drop in crime for 13 of the 14 months he served as commissioner.
00:29In his time as part of the NYPD during our administration,
00:34we removed more than 18,000 illegal guns off our streets,
00:39had the lowest number of robberies in recorded history in the month of October
00:46in our subway system and throughout the entire last few months,
00:53and just had the lowest number of shootings above ground ever
00:58in the history of recorded history in this city in August.
01:02To ensure crime keeps going down in our city today,
01:05I'm taking immediate action in appointing Tom Donilon as Interim Police Commissioner.
01:11Tom is an experienced law enforcement professional who has worked at the local, state, federal, and international levels.
01:19He served as New York's Director of the Office of Homeland Security,
01:24ran the FBI's National Threat Center and the FBI-NYPD Joint Terrorist Task Force,
01:33and worked as the co-case agent investigating the 1993 Twin Towers bombing,
01:41as well as the attacks in U.S. embassies in Africa and the USS Cole in Yemen by al-Qaeda.
01:51He is also a Bronx native.
