00:20CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:31Hello, everybody. It's time to give birth to another week of Countdown.
00:35It's nice to be back. I'll be seeing you right through
00:38until we crown a new champion at the end of this season.
00:41Really nice to see you. Welcome back.
00:43Well, you've been bugging me on WhatsApp every single day
00:46for the last month, so, you know, we've still been chatting a lot.
00:49Question. You know it's random.
00:51Mm-hm.
00:52Birthing music. Mm-hm.
00:54When you had your little sprogs... Yeah.
00:57..did you have music playing, and what was it?
01:00Well, the first time, they tell you it's going to take forever,
01:03so my best friend had a five-day labour,
01:06and I was getting ready to give birth in December,
01:08so I had Christmas films ready, I had a comedy happy playlist
01:13with things like I Want To Break Free, Queen,
01:16and then by the time it came, she came too quickly,
01:19I was screaming for it to come out, and she just came out at home
01:22instead of there, didn't watch any films, didn't turn anything on,
01:25didn't do anything apart from shout.
01:27Wow. Let's just go to Dictionary Corner,
01:29and the mother of all lexicographers, Susie Dent,
01:32and congratulations, everybody, it's a comedian,
01:35making his debut, Stephen King!
01:37APPLAUSE
01:39Can I just say, I am so excited to be here,
01:43sat in Dictionary Corner for the first time,
01:46having watched this show from boy to man. Yes.
01:49It's incredible. And Susie, it's like we're married.
01:52You don't know this, but we are married.
01:54Every afternoon, we are married. Very happy about that. OK.
01:57It's quite interesting here about the music,
01:59because birthing songs, I'm a twin,
02:02and when I was born with my twin sister,
02:05my mum didn't know, because of technology,
02:07that she was actually expecting twins.
02:09So she gave birth to my sister,
02:11then was getting dressed, about to leave.
02:13And the nurse was like, Mrs Amos, there is another child,
02:16and I think they put on Don't Stop Me Now.
02:19You were the encore!
02:21Brilliant, Stephen, great to have you here.
02:24APPLAUSE
02:25And we love having somebody who's a genuine fan of Countdown
02:28in Dictionary Corner, it makes all the difference,
02:31as is our champion, Clare Watkins, one win under her belt,
02:34although our first time meeting. Lovely to meet you. Thank you.
02:38So you are a schoolteacher, primary schoolteacher. I am.
02:42Tell me this, because I get messages from people,
02:45I didn't realise it was this common,
02:47do you watch Countdown or involve Countdown in your lessons?
02:51Yes, I play Countdown with my class, the numbers game especially,
02:55to practise their mental arithmetic,
02:57and we do the letters game for spelling as well.
02:59Right, that's fantastic. Well, where's your school?
03:02My school is John Bunyan Primary School in Braintree in Essex.
03:05OK. I'm not going to ask you about birth and music,
03:07but I am going to ask our challenger,
03:09Nicky Frank from Aldershot in Hampshire.
03:12How are you? I'm good, thank you.
03:14Come on, spill the beans, you're the reason for all this.
03:17I had a big birth plan, as most people do,
03:20and obviously it completely went out of the window.
03:23But as I was rushed into theatre, I said,
03:25I still want one thing to go my way.
03:27And they said, what do you want? I said, I just want some music on.
03:30So they asked me what I wanted, and I asked them to play Eminem.
03:33So my little boy was born to Eminem playing.
03:36What track? I Sing For The Moment.
03:39Scream For The Moment, more like it.
03:42Because there's quite a few Eminem tracks that would work.
03:44My Name Is would be very good, as you're about to name your kid.
03:48Cleaning Out My Closet would also be quite a decent choice.
03:52But let's leave it at that and get on with the show.
03:56Good luck to Nicky. Lovely to meet you, Claire.
03:58APPLAUSE
04:0115 rounds of letters and numbers before we're done.
04:04Claire, you're up first. May I have a consonant, please?
04:07You may indeed. Thank you, Claire. Start the week with D.
04:10And another, please.
04:12S. And another.
04:15F. And another.
04:18T. And a vowel.
04:21E. And another.
04:24U. And another.
04:26O. And another.
04:29I. And a consonant, please.
04:31And lastly, N.
04:33At home and in the studio, let's play Countdown.

05:06What an intriguing first set of letters today, Claire.

05:11Five. The five is?
05:13Found. Found, absolutely.
05:15And Claire? Infused.
05:17Yeah, good start. Good start for the champion.
05:20There was a lot of endings up there, I tell you.
05:24As I head to Stephen Kamos for the first-ever time in Dictionary Corner.
05:27Do you know what? I cannot believe this.
05:29I really, honestly, cos at home, my top scores are four-letter words max.
05:34But today, I've literally got tedious.
05:37You have, within two seconds.
05:39APPLAUSE
05:42Good morning.
05:44Right, Nicky, your first letters. Off you go. You get to pick them.

06:21BELL RINGS
06:24BELL CONTINUES
06:50All right, Nicky, how did you get on?
06:53Going for a big eight after, you know, a very safe start.
06:56Clare?
06:58I'll try an eight.
06:59You both feel like you're not entirely sure.
07:01I wonder, is it the same word? Nicky, what have you got now?
07:03Feasters.
07:04Feasters. It's the same word, feasters.
07:06I'm sure, because you never trust a teacher.
07:09Right, feasters.
07:11Feasters, people who feast on food round the table, you know?
07:15Is that there?
07:16It's in. Yay!
07:18APPLAUSE
07:20Stephen, if you've got a nine, then, you know, we'd love that.
07:24I'll be honest, Colin, no.
07:26I have to revert back to my four, which was fist.
07:29Yes.
07:30But then I moved on, with the help of lovely Susie,
07:34for another eight.
07:35And that eight is safeties.
07:37Safeties. Very, very good.
07:39APPLAUSE
07:41Right, so, first numbers round. And, Clare, you're picking.
07:44May I have two large and the rest small, please, Rachel?
07:46You may indeed, thank you, Clare.
07:48Here are the big four little first numbers of the week.
07:51And they are...
07:59And the target to reach, 198.
08:02198 numbers up.
08:18DRAMATIC MUSIC
08:34198, Clare?
08:36198. Yeah, Nicky?
08:38No idea.
08:39Do you know what? You'll kick yourself,
08:41but let's just put Nicky out of her misery here.
08:4350 x 4 is 200.
08:4650 x 4, 200.
08:4810 minus 8 is 2.
08:50Yeah. Well done, 198.
08:52APPLAUSE
08:55OK, 25 plays it.
08:57It's our first Tea Time teaser.
09:01Sorry.
09:03I can't say it.
09:05It's... Oh, wow, it's two words in my language.
09:08I just can't say.
09:10What are they?
09:12I can't say it.
09:13I'm not going to say it cos I know you're going to laugh.
09:15OK.
09:16Clare, you're a schoolteacher, can you do the Tea Time teaser?
09:19Yes, of course. This is unprecedented.
09:21But just... There you go.
09:23Don't be too good.
09:25Here you go.
09:27Bear hair. Bear hair.
09:30Might you find Basil hanging out in this region?
09:33Might you find Basil hanging out in this region?
09:36DRAMATIC MUSIC
09:44APPLAUSE
09:51Welcome back.
09:52What she said, and the answer was herbaria.
09:56I can barely say that.
09:58Susie, give us an explanation.
10:00Yeah, it's the plural of herbarium,
10:02which is simply a collection of dried plants.
10:04Right, swiftly moving on.
10:06No doubt there's a Tea Time teaser with char in it on the way as well.
10:10Right, Nicky, let's get some more letters.
10:12Can I start with a vowel, please?
10:14Thank you, Nicky.
10:16A. And a consonant.
10:18H. And another consonant.
10:21Y. And a vowel.
10:24O. And a consonant.
10:27N. And a vowel.
10:30E. And a consonant.
10:33S. And a vowel.

10:43DRAMATIC MUSIC
11:11All right, time's up. Nicky?
11:13Er, six. Six and Claire?
11:16I'll try a six.
11:18Try a six. You're not too sure about it, so what is it?
11:20It's mousy with an E.
11:22Mousy with an E. And Nicky?
11:24Monies. And monies, E-Y-S,
11:27which I think I would have taken a gamble on.
11:29So over to the god of the dictionary.
11:32Well, normally, as you know, I'm the party pooper. Yeah.
11:35But today, the dictionary's been quite generous,
11:37so both of them are in. Yes. Well done.
11:39APPLAUSE
11:41Never a two-year-old spoken dead.
11:44How are you getting on, Stephen?
11:46We do have an eight. Wow.
11:48Which is...? A houseman.
11:50A houseman. Houseman, yeah. Explain.
11:52So, if you like Adam Kay's brilliant books about being a doctor,
11:56you will see this term.
11:57It's a junior intern at a hospital, a houseman.
12:00Brilliant. Let's get some more letters. Claire, you're up.
12:03May I have a consonant, please, Rachel? Thank you, Claire.
12:06T. And another?
12:08B. And another?
12:11S. And another?
12:14N. And a vowel?
12:17E. And another?
12:19A. And another?
12:21O. And a consonant?
12:24V.
12:26And a vowel, please?
12:28Lastly, A.
12:30Here we go.
12:38ELECTRONIC MUSIC PLAYS
13:01This is Watkins.
13:03Six. Nikki?
13:05Five. OK, the five is...?
13:07Beast. And the six?
13:08Ovates. Ovates, yeah, we'll be all right there.
13:10Fairly straightforward.
13:12Stephen Kay, Amos still making his debut.
13:14He's been off the flyer. How did you get on?
13:16We did find a seven. Yeah.
13:20And that is novates. Novates.
13:23Yes, good countdown term, that one.
13:25It means to...
13:26To novate is to replace an old legal contract with a new one.
13:29Good stuff. Right, 37 plays 14.
13:32Nikki, big ten points up for grabs.
13:35Can I get one large and then the rest small, please?
13:38You can indeed, thank you, Nikki. One large.
13:40Five little and ten points coming up.
13:42This numbers round is...
13:51And the target to reach, 778.
13:53778, numbers up.
13:55ELECTRONIC MUSIC PLAYS
14:05ELECTRONIC MUSIC CONTINUES
14:25Right, 778, Nikki.
14:28777.
14:29One away. All the sevens, Claire?
14:31780.
14:32780, so seven points, possibly, for Nikki,
14:35if you've worked it out correctly. Here we go.
14:38So I've got 5 plus 3 is 8.
14:415 plus 3, 8.
14:43Times 100, that's 800. Yeah.
14:46Minus both the tens.
14:49And then minus the three. Yep. Yeah.
14:51The other three gets you to one below.
14:53Very, very good indeed. Big seven points there for a challenger.
14:57Rachel, can you take me one closer?
15:00You... Well, just the one way.
15:02Lots of dead ends for this one that I found anyway.
15:05You could say 10 minus 3 is 7.
15:07And then 100 plus the second ten is 110.
15:11Times those together for 770.
15:13And the five and the second three gets you to 778.
15:17There it is.
15:21That brings it a little bit closer
15:23as we cross over to the dictionary corner
15:25and take a few minutes out with Stephen K Amos.
15:27I love when anybody in dictionary corner goes,
15:30oh, my God, I'm so happy to be here.
15:32Genuine fans, which I can see that you are.
15:34Oh, my goodness.
15:35I've told everybody that I'm going to be on this show
15:38and they're like, no! Really?
15:40What can you bring back with you?
15:42So I do want to find out what's appropriate.
15:44I know we can't bring humans like the amazing Susie.
15:48I can't take her, I hope.
15:49But I just wondered, Colin, would it be appropriate for me
15:52at least to stroke the clock?
15:54At least to just touch it?
15:56Or even maybe take the marking pen that's been used by Rachel?
15:59Something.
16:00Well, it's who you know, right?
16:03I know you.
16:04So, for example, if you go into the darkness just off set
16:09and you befriend those who are in charge of the letters,
16:13they may give you your name to put on your fridge.
16:17They're magnetic.
16:19So I have Colin in my fridge at home,
16:22but it took me six months to prise those letters away from them.
16:26But the actual size?
16:28Yes.
16:29Oh, can I have those, please?
16:30There's no point asking me, I'm not in charge of those.
16:33The only thing I am in charge of is the teapot,
16:37which you would have to wrestle out of my cold, dead hands.
16:40And I would not feel comfortable taking...
16:43Well, A, wrestling you, but B, having that teapot,
16:46which should rightly go to whoever the champion is.
16:48But, you know, letters you can replace.
16:50Yeah.
16:51Those iconic letters, can you imagine them?
16:53They would not be on my fridge.
16:54They'll be on my front door, on my gate.
16:57People will know that I've been here.
16:59Well, I love that enthusiasm.
17:01It's going to be brilliant to have you here all week.
17:03Stephen, thank you.
17:05APPLAUSE
17:06Well, no pressure on, Clare.
17:07The teapot's already in the bag.
17:09That's going home with you.
17:10But how many wins?
17:11Just one so far.
17:12Let's get more letters.
17:13May I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
17:15Thank you, Clare.
17:16S.
17:17And another?
17:18M.
17:19And another?
17:20G.
17:21And another?
17:23B.
17:24And another?
17:26T.
17:27And a vowel?
17:29E.
17:30And another?
17:31A.
17:32And another?
17:34O.
17:36And a consonant, please.
17:38Lastly, R.
17:40Start the clock.
17:41CLOCK CHIMES
17:50MUSIC PLAYS
18:11Clare, how do you get on?
18:13I'm going to try an eight.
18:14She's going to risk it for a biscuit.
18:16And Nicky?
18:17A six.
18:18A six is?
18:19Faster.
18:20What's your eight, Clare?
18:21Can I have sportage?
18:23Oh, you might kick yourself with this, Clare, if it's not in.
18:26It's not.
18:27Oh, boo!
18:28You could have portages if you put the S at the end,
18:31which is all about carrying a boat between waters.
18:34So a misplaced S has made a real difference.
18:37What a second part Nicky's having.
18:39We're now back within that crucial Countdown Conundrum Zone.
18:42Just ten points in it.
18:43What a good game we have.
18:44And, Nicky, it's your letters.
18:46Can I have a consonant, please?
18:48L
18:49And another?
18:51N
18:52And another?
18:54S
18:55And a vowel?
18:57E
18:58And another?
18:59I
19:00And a consonant?
19:03W
19:04And another?
19:06G
19:07And a vowel?
19:10E
19:11And a consonant?
19:14Lastly, N.
19:15Half a minute.
19:16BELL RINGS
19:47Right, let's see, let's see, let's see.
19:49Nicky?
19:50Just a five.
19:51Just a five.
19:52Clare?
19:53Six.
19:54Six.
19:55Nicky, the five?
19:56Swing.
19:57Swing's in roundabouts this game.
19:59The six?
20:00N sign.
20:02N sign.
20:03Yeah, absolutely fine.
20:04No problem with that at all.
20:05Beautiful.
20:06Six points back.
20:07Well done, champ.
20:08But the ING was there, as was an S,
20:11so I had higher hopes for this round.
20:13So, Stephen, K, Amos?
20:14I think we have managed to come up with a seven.
20:18Swingle.
20:19Yes.
20:20Swingle.
20:21I thought you said swindle,
20:23and I was looking for the D that wasn't there.
20:26A swingle?
20:27I know, I love the sound of this word,
20:29but it's a wooden tool for beating flax,
20:32so when you want to remove the woody bits from flax,
20:35you swingle it or use a swingle.
20:37All right, 43 plays 27, our third numbers round of the game,
20:42and that means, Clare, you're picking a game.
20:44Two large ones and the rest small, please, Rachel.
20:46Thank you, Clare.
20:47Two from the top, four from the bottom ones.
20:50And for this round, we have 10, 7, 7, 5,
20:55and the big ones, 25 and 100.
20:58And the target to reach, 474.
21:01474.
21:02Numbers up.
21:12MUSIC PLAYS
21:33OK, pens down.
21:34Clare, declare.
21:36475.
21:37475, one away.
21:39Nicky?
21:40470.
21:41And 470, so it's for seven points, champ.
21:467 minus 5 is 2.
21:49Yep.
21:50Add that to the other 7 and a 10 is 19.
21:54OK.
21:55And multiply it by the 25.
21:57Yep, 475.
21:59Wow, you've had a mare there, Clare, I have to say.
22:02It's one of those, you can't overcomplicate this one.
22:05Well, I think it's going to ruin their day, but off you go.
22:08I mean, I sometimes have a harder one in my back pocket,
22:11so I don't get embarrassed when you just say it's easy.
22:14Because you could have said 100 times 5 is 500,
22:18take away the 25, and then 7 over 7 gives you 1.
22:21Awesome.
22:22There you go!
22:23APPLAUSE
22:25Second Tea Time Teaser of the day.
22:28This one is Yon Shah.
22:30It's not.
22:31Update it.
22:32Update it.
22:33You can solve this if you've got the ability.
22:35You can solve this if you've got the ability.
22:38MUSIC
22:53Welcome back.
22:54Update it becomes Aptitude.
22:56You can solve this if you've got the ability.
22:59Well, we've still got six rounds to go.
23:01It can go either way.
23:02And, Nicky, let's get the first one now.
23:04Can I have a consonant, please?
23:06Thank you, Nicky.
23:07G.
23:08And a vowel?
23:10A.
23:11And another?
23:12O.
23:13And a consonant?
23:15R.
23:16And another?
23:18P.
23:19And another?
23:20Z.
23:21And a vowel?
23:23I.
23:25And a consonant?
23:27G.
23:29And another consonant, please?
23:31Could be a challenge.
23:32A final T.
23:35Tied and done.
23:36MUSIC
24:05Nicky?
24:06Just a five.
24:07Might not be just.
24:08Claire?
24:09Just a five.
24:10Right.
24:11I think that's staggering for this round,
24:13given the letters, Nicky, what you have.

24:16Yeah.
24:17And, Claire?
24:18Groat.

24:24An old groat.
24:25But, Nicky, so what was yours?
24:26Razor.
24:27Oh, Razor, you need two Rs.
24:29Oh, God!
24:30I'm so sorry.
24:32Is that as good, fives all the way?
24:34Yeah, definitely was, yeah, really tough.

25:31MUSIC PLAYS
25:36OK, Claire Watkins?
25:38Six.
25:39Nicky Frank?
25:40Yeah, six.
25:41Yeah, what's the sixth, Claire?
25:42Buckle.
25:43Buckle.
25:44And Nicky?
25:45Bucket.
25:46There you go, Bucket and Buckle.
25:47Loads of lovely words in there.
25:48There are quite a few words in there.
25:50We've got another six, cackle.
25:52Cackle.
25:53But we also have a seven, which is cutback.
25:56Cutback for seven.
25:57Brilliant, Stephen.
25:58And we're going to sit back now.
26:00It's time for Origins of Words.
26:02Thank you, Colin.
26:03Well, I mentioned on Friday that I have spent the last year or so
26:08collecting words for emotions.
26:10So, the emotions that we all know about,
26:12like jealousy and envy and greed,
26:14but also emotions that we didn't know had a name
26:17but that some of us might recognise.
26:19So, I'm going to give you some more this week
26:21and I'm going to kick off with something that I feel very often.
26:25And that is cacoethes.
26:27OK, it's a bit of a mouthful.
26:29Cacoethes, which is C-A-C-O-E-T-H-E-S,
26:32is the irresistible desire to do something you know you're going to regret.
26:36Oh.
26:37So, it could be the response to a tweet that you know you shouldn't send
26:42but you can't help yourself.
26:44It could be any situation where you just feel this urge to do something
26:48without stopping and taking a breath.
26:50And few words beginning with cac in English,
26:52whether it's written C-A-C or K-A-K, promise anything positive
26:56is kakos in Greek, which means bad.
26:59So, cacophony is a really discordant din.
27:01No-one wants to hear that.
27:03And a kakistocracy is a government run by the worst of citizens.
27:08And cacoethes is no exception.
27:10So, it comes from the Greek for an ill habit or an itch.
27:14So, as I say, it perfectly describes the compulsion to behave in a way
27:17that you know ultimately will do you no good whatsoever.
27:20Love it.
27:22That will be a whole maelstrom of emotions now
27:25as we head into the last few rounds on Countdown.
27:28Nicky, it's your letters.
27:30Can I start with a consonant, please?

28:43Let's find out with Susie and Stephen.
28:45Yeah, I got trailer as well there.
28:48Did you get any of the sevens?
28:50Yeah, there is inertia is there for seven,
28:52and you can extend that to an eight with inertial,
28:55which is used in physics.
28:57Inertial forces are those that are either at rest
28:59or go in a uniform direction.
29:01OK, if you've got that at home, you can light the cigar.
29:0468 plays 40.

31:55I wasn't as close, 403.
31:57LAUGHTER
31:59Claire, let's see if you can get seven points.
32:01I did seven times eight is 56.
32:04Seven times eight, 56.
32:05Add on the six and the five to give 67.
32:08Yeah.
32:09Multiply it by ten and add on the two.
32:126723 away.
32:14Yeah, it's a very, very good effort, but 675.
32:18Yes, you could have said two times six is 12.
32:24Times it by ten for 120.
32:27Add the eight and the seven for 135.
32:31And times it by five.
32:33Yeah.
32:34APPLAUSE
32:37Could have, Rachel.
32:39Thousands of us didn't.
32:41That's how you get 675.
32:43It's not a crucial Countdown Conundrum,
32:45but it's been such an enjoyable show today.
32:47So let's get the fingers on buzzers.
32:50And actually, Claire didn't get the conundrum in her first win.
32:53So, you know, a bit of pressure there, Nicky.
32:55Let's see if you can go out on a high
32:57and let's reveal today's Countdown Conundrum.
33:11BUZZER RINGS
33:27Oh, I did this, Claire!
33:29Is it convivial?
