00:00Vanakkam, I am Dr. Keerthana, Consultant Pulmonologist with Kaveri Hospital, Vadapalli.
00:06Today, we are going to talk about the treatment options for COPD, which is a common respiratory problem.
00:16First, what is your risk factor?
00:24The most common risk factor is smoking, which is related to COPD.
00:29You should stop smoking.
00:33Smoking will increase the risk of COPD.
00:51Second, you should start taking bronchodilators.
00:57Bronchodilators can be given in various forms.
01:00It can be given as an inhaler or as a capsule.
01:04It can also be given as a nebulizer in advanced conditions.
01:09It relaxes the muscles around the respiratory tract.
01:18It releases the narrowing obstruction in the respiratory tract.
01:24So, the patient will be free to breathe in and out.
01:29The symptoms of COPD will be reduced.
01:36Third, in advanced diseases,
01:41oxygen therapy is recommended for patients with low oxygen levels.
01:48Oxygen is also a medicine.
01:53Apart from medicine, there is pulmonary rehabilitation.
01:59It includes multiple modalities, including nutritional support.
02:05Nutrition is also important in COPD.
02:08High-protein diet is recommended as a part of counselling.
02:13Another one is exercise.
02:15When we exercise, our lungs are strengthened.
02:20There are various types of aerobic exercises.
02:23There are exercises for strengthening.
02:25There are exercises for breathing.
02:27All these help to stabilize your symptoms.
02:30Pulmonary rehabilitation helps to improve your physical activity.
02:40Another common problem in COPD is recurrent infections.
02:46How can we prevent it?
02:48By vaccinating.
02:50The main vaccine is flu vaccination.
02:54Flu vaccination is an early vaccine.
02:56Every year, patients get vaccinated.
02:58The other vaccine is pneumococcal vaccine.
03:02If we get both vaccines, the chance of recurrent infections will be reduced.
03:08In worst case scenarios, patients with severe COPD,
03:13lung transplant is an option.
