00:04:21I was in the engine room.
00:04:23And when I come back up, they were gone.
00:04:26Not a damn sign of them.
00:04:28You're bleeding.
00:04:30Yeah, I hit my head on the door.
00:04:32What the hell happened out there, Bill?
00:04:36I was down in the engine room.
00:04:38I was resetting the engine overheat switch.
00:04:43And then I hear the screaming.
00:04:46And I come back up and they're gone.
00:04:49There were bubbles, these bloody bubbles all around the boat.
00:04:55It was horrible.
00:04:57I need to get you down to the med center.
00:05:00Them boys are still out there somewhere.
00:05:02Coast Guard's out searching for them now.
00:05:08Have you been drinking, Bill?
00:05:11What's this?
00:05:15That'd be a bottle of rum.
00:05:17You're not supposed to be drinking out there, Bill.
00:05:20Okay, I had a little splash.
00:05:22You had a little splash, I know, right?
00:05:24I need you to go with Alice.
00:05:27Are you arresting me?
00:05:29No, no, but I am detaining you until we can sort this thing out.
00:05:36This ain't right.
00:05:38What about them boys?
00:05:44If they're out there, the Coast Guard will find them.
00:05:50I need to have a blood alcohol done on them.
00:05:53I'm going to go to the Coast Guard.
00:05:55I'll meet you back at the station.
00:05:57You got it.
00:06:14Oh, shit.
00:06:44Hey, Sheriff.
00:06:45Hey, Brad.
00:06:46What's the situation out there?
00:06:48So far, nothing.
00:06:49We found that beacon, but no sign of anyone out there.
00:06:53Hey, Sheriff.
00:06:54Hey, Darren.
00:06:56I was just heading down to the responder to talk to Bill.
00:07:00Why didn't he wait for us to get out there?
00:07:03He came in.
00:07:04He was talking crazy.
00:07:06I don't know.
00:07:07It could have been drunk driving.
00:07:10So I took him into custody.
00:07:12So what's the story?
00:07:14He said he was down below.
00:07:16When he came up, they were gone.
00:07:20Then he said something about a strange sound and bloody, bubbling water.
00:07:28I don't know.
00:07:29I have him down at the med center with Alice.
00:07:31We'll do a blood alcohol on him, find out if he's really dead.
00:07:36Been quite a while since we've had any fishermen lost at sea around here.
00:07:39Yeah, it sure has.
00:07:41Earl Green.
00:07:42We never knew they were missing.
00:07:44Took off for Newport and washed ashore about a mile up the coast.
00:07:48Right.
00:07:49And that was, what, about 10 years ago?
00:07:53Yep.
00:07:54Almost exactly.
00:07:56We had a bad salmon run that year, too, didn't we?
00:07:59We had no salmon run that year.
00:08:01Right.
00:08:02We had no salmon run that year.
00:08:04Right, and that's what the fishermen are saying now.
00:08:06No fish.
00:08:09What do you think's causing it?
00:08:11I don't know.
00:08:12Sharks, maybe?
00:08:14You should talk to that marine biologist.
00:08:17I was thinking about that.
00:08:18John Burton.
00:08:20Right.
00:08:21Newport Marine Biology Center.
00:08:23Right guy, wrong place.
00:08:25He's at Ocean World in Crescent City.
00:08:27Ocean World?
00:08:28Isn't that some kind of kiddie roadside attraction?
00:08:31Yeah.
00:08:32I guess he got demoted.
00:08:34Sheriff, you copy?
00:08:37Yeah, go ahead.
00:08:38Can you come over to Pearl Beach?
00:08:40Old Ben Burns called.
00:08:42Well, you just need to get over here.
00:08:44What now?
00:08:46All right, roger that.
00:08:48On my way.
00:08:49Busy day?
00:08:51Keep me posted.
00:08:53Will do, Sheriff.
00:09:02♪♪♪
00:09:11What the hell's going on?
00:09:13Ben Burns was perch fishing, hooked into a leg.
00:09:22I'm guessing it's one of our missing fishermen.
00:09:25Guys, get this over to the medical examiner.
00:09:29See if they can figure out what the hell caused this.
00:09:33Get a location of where Ben was fishing?
00:09:36Yeah, right next to that rock outcropping.
00:09:40Shit, the tide's coming in.
00:09:43What time is low tide again?
00:09:47825 a.m.
00:09:49Organize a search party.
00:09:50We're gonna need a dog.
00:09:51Will do.
00:09:53Figure if the leg washed up,
00:09:55the rest of them can't be too far behind, right?
00:09:58Alice, you copy?
00:10:00Roger, Skip.
00:10:01Go ahead.
00:10:03Reach out to Ocean World.
00:10:05Get in touch with John Burt
00:10:06and ask him if he can meet us up on Pearl Beach, 8 a.m. tomorrow.
00:10:10Roger that, Sheriff.
00:10:12Will do.
00:10:13Leave this tape up before we run that search party in the morning.
00:10:17You got it, Sheriff.
00:10:19♪♪♪♪
00:10:27Have a good tour, everybody.
00:10:29Hey, hey, hey.
00:10:31Have a good tour.
00:10:34Hey, guys.
00:10:36All right, you have a good tour.
00:10:38I will.
00:10:40♪♪♪♪♪
00:10:51Hello, everybody, my name is John Burton.
00:10:53Welcome to Ocean World.
00:10:55The first stop today is the tide pool
00:10:57where you'll find lots of our local tide animals,
00:11:00mostly sea stars and sea anemones.
00:11:03Now, if you were to touch one of the sea anemones,
00:11:05you might notice they feel a little sticky on the outside,
00:11:08and that is actually them trying to sting you,
00:11:10but not to worry because your skin is way too thick
00:11:12to be affected by their stingers.
00:11:14Lots of different types of sea stars in the tide pool.
00:11:18The larger, more colorful ones are the ochre sea star
00:11:22and the small, red, slimy ones, those are leather sea stars.
00:11:27See?
00:11:29John, call for you?
00:11:31Can you take a message?
00:11:34It's the sheriff's office in Harvard.
00:11:36They want to talk to you.
00:11:38What does he want?
00:11:40I can take over.
00:11:44Hi, everyone, my name is Sandy.
00:11:46I'll be your guide for the rest of the tour.
00:11:48If you want to just watch your step and follow me,
00:11:50we'll head on down to the shark tanks.
00:11:52We're in a turtle.
00:12:01music
00:12:16It's so exciting.
00:12:17We haven't had a band in a long time.
00:12:19Oh, Phyllis, you didn't have to go through all this trouble.
00:12:21Yes, I did.
00:12:23It's good to have you home again.
00:12:27You're sweet.
00:12:41Blood analysis.
00:12:42Great, thank you.
00:12:48Have you talked to the coroner?
00:12:50Any word?
00:12:51Not yet.
00:12:52All right, let me know when you do.
00:13:14How long are you supposed to keep me here?
00:13:16I'm not.
00:13:18Unless I charge you with something, which I can.
00:13:22Your blood alcohol content was .07.
00:13:25What the fuck is that supposed to mean?
00:13:27It's one point under being legally drunk.
00:13:31So I can charge you with impairment.
00:13:34I ask it.
00:13:36You know I ain't drunk.
00:13:38And I told you everything there is to tell.
00:13:40I done nothing, nothing, nothing to them boys.
00:13:45We found a piece of a body.
00:13:50Washed up on Pearl Beach.
00:13:55Jesus.
00:13:58The good news is, at least for you, is that the blood on your boat is type O.
00:14:04You happen to be type O.
00:14:08So I'm gonna guess that you've been telling us the truth about that.
00:14:12Of course I've been telling you the truth.
00:14:14I'm gonna let you go, Bill.
00:14:18I'm gonna overlook that you were drinking while you were driving your boat.
00:14:25But you are not to go around telling any tall tales.
00:14:29Do you understand me?
00:14:33Not a peep until we figure this thing out.
00:14:37You're in my way.
00:14:49Skip.
00:14:52If you need anything, you just give me a call. Okay?
00:14:56Anything.
00:14:58Go home and get some rest.
00:15:08Press is out there.
00:15:10Wow, terrific.
00:15:12Listen, do me a favor, take Bill out the back.
00:15:14No problem.
00:15:16Oh, and John Burton says he'll meet you at the beach tomorrow.
00:15:19Okay.
00:15:22Hey, guys.
00:15:24We had an unfortunate event today.
00:15:26This morning, a couple of our local fishermen went overboard.
00:15:31And the Coast Guard was contacted immediately.
00:15:34As of this hour, neither has been found.
00:15:38And where are their names?
00:15:39We're not releasing names right now.
00:15:41What's going on at Pearl Beach?
00:15:43I can't comment on that.
00:15:45Is it true that Bill Morgan is the suspect?
00:15:47No, no.
00:15:48Bill was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and he was released.
00:15:54That's all I got for you right now.
00:15:56As soon as we get anything else, you'll be the first to know.
00:16:00Okay. Thank you.
00:16:03Now, as a bit of a grand finale,
00:16:04Cora will show you just how high a sea lion can jump up out of the water.
00:16:08So please direct your focus on that red buoy up there.
00:16:11Okay.
00:16:15Thank you all for visiting Ocean World.
00:16:16We hope you come back and visit us again really soon.
00:16:20Bye.
00:16:22Thank you so much.
00:16:23Bye.
00:16:30Bye.
00:16:34John, what was that all about?
00:16:37Something washed up on the beach and they want me to take a look at it.
00:16:41Well, look at you.
00:16:44Told them I would be down in the morning.
00:16:47Do you mind driving me?
00:16:48I could use an assistant.
00:16:52You mean a chauffeur.
00:16:55Get my license back in two months.
00:16:58I could use the help.
00:17:00Official business only.
00:17:02Oh.
00:17:03Well, that's no fun.
00:17:06But, sure.
00:17:08I could use a break in here.
00:17:09Sure.
00:17:17Look who's got an eye for you.
00:17:19Greg.
00:17:21He's kind of cute.
00:17:23Hard worker.
00:17:24I would never go for a fisherman.
00:17:26Well, honey, you're going to have to lower your standards if you want to get a man around here.
00:17:30This ain't Miami Beach.
00:17:33Here we go.
00:17:35How you doing, Abby?
00:17:36Hi.
00:17:37Hi, Greg.
00:17:38I just wanted to say it's nice to see you.
00:17:40It's been a long time.
00:17:41When did you get back?
00:17:42Just last week.
00:17:45Can I get you another?
00:17:46Yes, please.
00:17:51Here you go.
00:17:54She's kind of sweet if you ask me.
00:17:56I told you I would never date a fisherman.
00:17:59One, two, three, and!
00:18:01What do you do with Duncan Saylor?
00:18:03What do you do with Duncan Saylor?
00:18:05What do you do with Duncan Saylor?
00:18:07Early in the morning.
00:18:10Way, hey, and up she rises.
00:18:12Way, hey, and up she rises.
00:18:14Way, hey, and up she rises.
00:18:17Early in the morning.
00:18:19One more time!
00:18:20Way, hey, and up she rises.
00:18:22Way, hey, and up she rises.
00:18:24Way, hey, and up she rises.
00:18:27Early in the morning.
00:18:30Woo!
00:18:32Better man, I'm gonna take you sober.
00:18:34Better man, I'm gonna take you sober.
00:18:36Better man, I'm gonna take you sober.
00:18:38Early in the morning.
00:18:41Any word from Burton?
00:18:43No.
00:18:44He said he'd be here.
00:18:49Dog's on to something.
00:18:52Dog, dog, dog!
00:18:59It's just a dead seagull.
00:19:01Just a seagull.
00:19:03Jeff, I just got a frantic call from Jeff on the Jenny Lynn.
00:19:07Says he thinks he found one of your missing fishermen.
00:19:10Oh, shit, at the harbor?
00:19:12Yeah.
00:19:13Also a John Burton called, said he's on his way.
00:19:17I'm gonna call to Burton,
00:19:18tell him to meet me down at the harbor dock, all right?
00:19:27You're not gonna believe this one.
00:19:29What's going on, Jeff?
00:19:30We went out yesterday, set some pots,
00:19:32let them soak overnight, came out,
00:19:34ran them this morning, no crabs in them,
00:19:36and this is what was in it.
00:19:40Just hang tight. I'll be right back.
00:19:47I think it's...
00:19:48I know who it is.
00:19:52All right, guys, get him out of here.
00:19:55Boy, can I get a look?
00:19:59Thank you for coming, man.
00:20:01Sorry I'm late.
00:20:02It's all right.
00:20:05Wow.
00:20:06What could do this?
00:20:08Huh.
00:20:10Something mean?
00:20:13Yeah.
00:20:14I'm gonna need an autopsy room. You got one?
00:20:17At the coroner's office.
00:20:19Great.
00:20:20Also, could you give me the coordinates
00:20:22where you pulled this up?
00:20:23Absolutely. It's not very far out there.
00:20:25I'll show you exactly.
00:20:26Okay.
00:20:28All right.
00:20:29Thank you, John.
00:20:31Deputy Nelson, Alice.
00:20:33Nice to meet you, Alice.
00:20:39What the hell's going on, Sheriff?
00:20:43Let's wait and see what John has to say.
00:20:54You're not gonna want to see this.
00:20:58You're not gonna want to see this.
00:21:01Do you want me to wait in the car every time?
00:21:05Okay. Fine.
00:21:19Can you get her out of here, please?
00:21:27As you can see, the top and bottom extremities
00:21:31have been severed.
00:21:33Yeah.
00:21:34Well, I can say by the bite pattern
00:21:36that it's not a shark.
00:21:38I mean, you can see by the bones,
00:21:40they're more snapped off than bitten through.
00:21:44And sharks leave a clean bite mark.
00:21:47So you have any idea what did this?
00:21:51Honestly, I would say a giant squid,
00:21:54but that's just too unlikely around here.
00:22:00Can you get me a boat?
00:22:02Yeah, I can set something up with the coast guard.
00:22:05No, I need a fishing boat.
00:22:07Fishing boat.
00:22:10All right, I'll call Bill. He owes me one.
00:22:14Tell him to bring some bait.
00:22:25You're back.
00:22:28Yeah.
00:22:31You feeling better?
00:22:33A little.
00:22:35I should probably eat something.
00:22:38There's a tavern across the street.
00:22:40You want to go with me?
00:22:46John.
00:22:49Sorry.
00:22:51They have a bar?
00:22:53It's a tavern.
00:22:55Yes, they have a bar.
00:22:57Um, just give me a couple minutes
00:22:59and I'll meet you over there.
00:23:01Sure.
00:23:22Hi there.
00:23:24Hey.
00:23:25What can I get you?
00:23:26Do you have a 7-Up?
00:23:277-Up.
00:23:31Do you want a glass?
00:23:33No.
00:23:35Oh, thanks.
00:23:37So I don't recognize you. Where are you from?
00:23:39Are you visiting?
00:23:41I guess you can say that.
00:23:43Can I see a food menu?
00:23:44Um, we have chips.
00:23:47Chips. We just have chips.
00:23:50Okay.
00:23:52So where are you from?
00:23:53Uh, Crescent City.
00:23:54Boss drugged me up here.
00:23:56It's not that far.
00:23:57Um, I'm Abigail, but most people call me Abby.
00:24:00Sandra. Most people call me Sandy.
00:24:03So what do you do?
00:24:04Marine biology.
00:24:06I mean, I'm not a marine biologist yet.
00:24:09My boss, John, is.
00:24:11He let me tag along.
00:24:13And are you working on something?
00:24:16Trying to figure out what attacked those fishermen.
00:24:19Why do you think something attacked those fishermen?
00:24:23Well, let's just say they're finding them in pieces.
00:24:32Oh.
00:24:34There you are.
00:24:35I was just telling Abby about the fishermen.
00:24:37You must be John.
00:24:39John Burton.
00:24:40John Burton, the marine biologist.
00:24:44Yes, wow.
00:24:45She must have, uh, told you a lot in five minutes.
00:24:49It's really awful what happened to those guys.
00:24:52Do you really think something attacked them?
00:24:55I can't say.
00:24:57Um, but, you know, probably shouldn't be talking about it
00:25:00because it's an ongoing investigation.
00:25:02So, you know what I can say?
00:25:05I would love a rum and coke with a lime.
00:25:07Rum and coke with a lime.
00:25:09I'm gonna go grab another bottle.
00:25:13What are you doing?
00:25:15I was just making small talk.
00:25:17That's not small talk.
00:25:19And it will spread like wildfire,
00:25:21so please just keep your mouth shut.
00:25:23I'm sorry. I fucked up.
00:25:25It's fine.
00:25:42Rum and coke with a lime.
00:25:46Can I get those chips?
00:25:48What's wrong with you?
00:25:50Nothing.
00:25:52I'm just tired.
00:25:55Here you go.
00:25:57Thanks.
00:25:58Have a nice night.
00:25:59You, too.
00:26:01See you back at the hotel.
00:26:04Sorry I got her in trouble, didn't I?
00:26:06No, it's fine.
00:26:08I mean, she just doesn't know all the rules.
00:26:11I shouldn't have been prying.
00:26:13No, it's fine.
00:26:15Listen, if you could do me a favor
00:26:17and just keep whatever she said to yourself,
00:26:19it'd be helpful.
00:26:21Deal.
00:26:23Can I ask you about marine biology?
00:26:25Why?
00:26:27Because I'm a marine biologist.
00:26:30Can I ask you about marine biology?
00:26:32Why?
00:26:34Because I think it's fascinating.
00:26:36Huh.
00:26:38Okay, Abby, shoot.
00:26:40What is the most interesting sea creature you've ever seen?
00:26:45Hmm.
00:26:47Hmm.
00:26:48That's a tough one.
00:26:50They're all interesting.
00:26:52What if you had to choose one?
00:26:57Why don't we go with smartest, because that's easy.
00:26:59Smartest, I know the answer to that.
00:27:01You do?
00:27:03Well, which one is it?
00:27:04What do you think chased the salmon away?
00:27:08Sure, tell me.
00:27:10A pod of mermaids from far away came and scared them off.
00:27:18Wow.
00:27:20Well, thank you, Abby, because now the problem is solved.
00:27:22You're welcome.
00:27:24You want another?
00:27:26Yes, but no.
00:27:28I have to get up early now tomorrow and go fishing for a mermaid.
00:27:33They're not that hard to catch.
00:27:35Just make sure they don't catch you first.
00:27:38You going to be in town for a while?
00:27:40We shall see.
00:27:42I will give you my number, and if you need anything...
00:27:51Just give me a call.
00:27:53Why?
00:27:55Well, thank you, Abby, and thank you for the drinks.
00:27:57I'll see you around.
00:28:28You didn't eat your chips.
00:28:33That bartender was a trip.
00:28:36You really are a dick.
00:28:38Whoa.
00:28:40Where is this coming from?
00:28:45Oh, you're not jealous of her or something.
00:28:48I work with you every day.
00:28:51I'm not jealous of you.
00:28:53Or something.
00:28:55I work with you every day.
00:28:57I protect you, mostly from yourself.
00:29:01And I do it because I care about you, John.
00:29:04I do. I really care about you.
00:29:06I really do.
00:29:08And you act like you don't have a drop of interest in me.
00:29:11You know that's not true.
00:29:13No, it is true. It is true.
00:29:15I'm so stupid.
00:29:17You didn't even thank me for driving you up here.
00:29:21And I fainted?
00:29:25Get her out of here.
00:29:27Yeah.
00:29:29I heard that.
00:29:31And yet, you know, hey,
00:29:33you can go chat it up with the sleazy bartender
00:29:36and then everything's just great
00:29:38and act like I'm not even there.
00:29:40So, I am...
00:29:42I'm done.
00:29:44I'm out of here. I'm gonna go.
00:29:46What? No. Listen.
00:29:52Look, you're right, okay?
00:29:55I am a dick.
00:29:59And I take you for granted.
00:30:03I take everyone for granted.
00:30:07Which is why I'm 45
00:30:09and I have never had a meaningful relationship.
00:30:17I'm sorry.
00:30:21I care about you.
00:30:23A lot.
00:30:27And you're right.
00:30:34I need to be better at showing that.
00:30:42Okay? Can we just get through whatever this is?
00:30:45And...
00:30:48when we get back,
00:30:50I promise I will be better.
00:31:02Deal?
00:31:11Yeah. Deal.
00:31:18Want a chip?
00:31:23Sure.
00:31:27I can't believe you didn't eat them.
00:31:32I was pissed at you.
00:31:36Thanks.
00:31:38Thanks.
00:31:59Hey, Skip.
00:32:03Yeah, I'm on my way.
00:32:08Okay.
00:32:38Oh, my God.
00:33:05John.
00:33:09It's Bill Morgan.
00:33:11He was a skipper.
00:33:13One of those deckhands we lost.
00:33:15Thought he'd be the best guy to take us out.
00:33:17Yeah, I was sorry to hear that.
00:33:19So what's the plan?
00:33:21Well, let's head out to the mouth of the river.
00:33:25If there's any salmon out here, that's where they'll be.
00:33:28Did you bring bait?
00:33:33Perfect.
00:33:38Let's go.
00:34:01Bill, we good?
00:34:03Now's it. Drop a line.
00:34:08Come on.
00:34:11Come on.
00:34:13Come on.
00:34:38We'll see.
00:34:40All right.
00:34:44There's nothing down there.
00:34:46Sonar's marking zero fish, not a thing.
00:34:52There has to be something out here driving these fish away.
00:34:55What could do that, Jim?
00:34:57It's hard to say.
00:34:59In most marine life, they emit panic impulse frequencies.
00:35:03It's kind of like flight animals.
00:35:06One starts running, they all start running,
00:35:08no matter what the threat is.
00:35:14Yeah, I don't know. We might as well just go in.
00:35:17I was just hoping, you know...
00:35:19He's marking something under the boat.
00:35:21It's pretty big.
00:35:44God damn it.
00:35:50I ain't never seen anything in these waters break a hook like that.
00:35:54Got to be a great white.
00:35:56It's not a shark.
00:35:58How's that?
00:36:00Sharks don't have scales.
00:36:04Here, hold this.
00:36:06Don't move.
00:36:08Let me see this.
00:36:11Let's head in.
00:36:13I'm going to have Sandy take this up to the lab for a DNA test.
00:36:17How long is that going to take?
00:36:19Probably a day or two.
00:36:25Hi, it's Sandy. Leave a message.
00:36:27Sandy, I'm sorry.
00:36:29I don't know what you're talking about.
00:36:31I don't know what you're talking about.
00:36:33I don't know what you're talking about.
00:36:35Hi, it's Sandy. Leave a message.
00:36:37Sandy, where the fuck are you?
00:36:39I need you to take a scale sample up to the lab.
00:36:42Call me.
00:37:06Hey, is there a car rental place anywhere around?
00:37:09I may need to drive this up to the lab myself.
00:37:11Oh, okay.
00:37:13I'll tell you what, I can find a vehicle in the fleet for you.
00:37:16I'll have one of the deputies drive it over.
00:37:18Okay?
00:37:19Great.
00:37:20Good. Need a lift to the hotel?
00:37:22No, I think I'm going to take a walk up the river.
00:37:24Just, you know, have a look around.
00:37:26All right.
00:37:27Find something interesting, you'll let me know, right?
00:37:29I will.
00:37:32Okay. Thank you, John.
00:37:35Bye.
00:37:49Hey. Hey, John.
00:37:51Hi.
00:37:52Hey.
00:37:53You're still around.
00:37:55If it isn't my favorite bartender.
00:37:59What happened to your hand?
00:38:01I got sea urchin.
00:38:03Prickly little burgers.
00:38:05Yeah.
00:38:06Make sure you clean that up.
00:38:07You don't want it getting infected.
00:38:09Yes, doctor.
00:38:11So, did you catch any mermaids today?
00:38:15You know, smoking marijuana is a lot more dangerous than people think.
00:38:18You're funny.
00:38:20Where's Sandy?
00:38:21I don't know.
00:38:22She went for a run this morning, but I haven't seen her.
00:38:24Where are you headed?
00:38:26Just thought I'd walk up the river for a little bit.
00:38:29Or...
00:38:31Let's see if any salmon have made their way up.
00:38:33Well, after you're done, if you want to come by,
00:38:36we got a liquor shipment today, so plenty of room.
00:38:41Well, I may take you up on that.
00:38:43I hope you do.
00:38:44Okay.
00:38:55Car enter.
00:38:56Hey, it's John Burton calling.
00:38:58Good.
00:38:59Listen, would it be possible to take a second look at that fisherman?
00:39:03Uh, yeah, today.
00:39:05Yeah, I'd appreciate it.
00:39:07In a minute?
00:39:08Sure.
00:39:09You got it.
00:39:10Okay, great. Thanks a lot. I'll see you soon.
00:39:15I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything.
00:39:23Oh, that's good.
00:39:24Okay.
00:39:28Thanks.
00:39:37You got some chemos?
00:39:38Yeah.
00:39:43Mm-hmm.
00:39:55That a scale?
00:39:57Yep.
00:40:03Sorry.
00:40:04Jesus, girl, where have you been?
00:40:06I just went for a swim and I lost track of time.
00:40:09What happened to your hand?
00:40:10Sharp rock.
00:40:14What?
00:40:18Your eyes.
00:40:24Who is he?
00:40:27What's his name?
00:40:30John.
00:40:32John what?
00:40:34John Burton.
00:40:35He's a marine biologist.
00:40:38Marine biologist?
00:40:40You can't be messing with professional men like that.
00:40:43They're hard to land.
00:40:45And they're even harder to hold.
00:40:48I really like him.
00:40:51Well, just watch your step.
00:40:53Don't be getting your heart broke.
00:40:56I will.
00:40:57I won't.
00:40:58I won't.
00:41:00Do something with your hair.
00:41:01It looks like hell.
00:41:25The weather is beautiful today.
00:41:27I'm highly glad that we decided to stop.
00:41:29I am, too.
00:41:30I'm glad we took the time.
00:41:31I'm just glad I don't have to play.
00:41:35Oh, Lord.
00:41:36That's a body.
00:41:39Hey, it's John.
00:41:43Good.
00:41:44Listen, have you, um, have you guys heard from Sandy today?
00:41:49Okay.
00:41:50Yeah, no, she went for a run this morning, but I haven't heard from her since.
00:41:57All right.
00:42:00Well, listen, just do me a favor.
00:42:02If you do hear from her, just have her give me a call.
00:42:04Hey, listen, just do me a favor.
00:42:05If you do hear from her, just have her give me a call.
00:42:34Okay.
00:42:56Hey, Skip.
00:42:57It's John.
00:42:58John, uh, I'm glad you called.
00:43:00I just sent a car over to you.
00:43:02It ain't much, but it will get you around.
00:43:04Listen, um,
00:43:07you know anything about a local fisherman,
00:43:10Jack Brandt?
00:43:11Is he still alive?
00:43:13I do know Jack.
00:43:15And yes, he is very much alive.
00:43:17He's legendary.
00:43:18Yeah, I'd like to ask him a few questions.
00:43:22Yeah, if he'll talk to you.
00:43:24You know, he can spin a pretty good yarn, that guy.
00:43:28You happen to know where he lives?
00:43:30Yeah, it's at the bank tavern.
00:43:31It's just a couple of blocks away from here.
00:43:33Yeah, I know where it is, but...
00:43:36what do you mean, he lives there?
00:43:37Yeah, he owns the place.
00:43:43Well, I think I'm gonna pay him a visit.
00:43:44Uh, John, if you do that, please be very careful.
00:43:47There are some really rough dudes hanging out there.
00:43:50Yeah, will do.
00:43:52Listen, I'll, uh, I'll keep you posted, all right?
00:43:55Right.
00:43:56All right.
00:44:00Thanks.
00:44:12Brown Hyundai Elantra, confiscating a drug bust.
00:44:16It runs.
00:44:18Where are you headed?
00:44:19Uh, the bank tavern.
00:44:22Pretty rough place.
00:44:25So I hear.
00:44:30Yeah.
00:44:44Oh, hi.
00:44:45Hi.
00:44:47What can I get for you?
00:44:49Yeah, I'm, uh...
00:44:51I'm looking for Jack Brand.
00:44:54Who's looking for him?
00:44:56Uh, I am.
00:44:57Yeah, who the fuck are you?
00:45:00I'm John Burton.
00:45:02I just want to ask him about the incident in 1979.
00:45:06You're John.
00:45:07Abby told me all about you.
00:45:09You want me to toss it?
00:45:10No, it's all right, Roger.
00:45:13He's upstairs.
00:45:15Go on up.
00:45:16He's waiting for you.
00:45:31What took you so long, John Burton?
00:45:39How do you know who I am?
00:45:41Well, you're the talk of the town, John.
00:45:50What happened in 1979?
00:45:53I don't know.
00:45:55I don't know.
00:45:57What happened in 1979?
00:46:01Have a drink, John.
00:46:04It's a little early for me.
00:46:06If you want to talk, you got to drink.
00:46:26Every ten years, they return.
00:46:29Who's they?
00:46:31Daughters of the sea.
00:46:36Ain't no shark or squid you're dealing with out there.
00:46:40Of course, you know that already, don't you?
00:46:42No, I don't.
00:46:45Thirty years ago, me and my boys were out fishing and drinking.
00:46:50I don't know where it comes from, but I'm singing from the sea.
00:46:55The compass starts spinning.
00:47:08I come out of there with my house.
00:47:12They're gone.
00:47:14Never to be seen again.
00:47:16They're gone.
00:47:18Nary a sign of them.
00:47:22Them boys didn't fall out of the moat.
00:47:27They were pulled out of that moat into the sea for a tasty meal.
00:47:33By mermaids?
00:47:36Mermaids, sirens.
00:47:40Call them what you will.
00:47:42But they're bad fish, John.
00:47:45Bad fish.
00:47:50So let me get this straight.
00:47:52Every ten years or so, mermaids come in and feed on fishermen?
00:47:59All but one.
00:48:00And she has to stay and find a mate.
00:48:02She has to be quick.
00:48:05Only seven days to breathe.
00:48:09Or she must return to the sea where the other is.
00:48:12And if she finds a mate?
00:48:14When she accepts the seat of a man, she will live her remaining days on dry land.
00:48:24No, that's enough.
00:48:27Listen, I appreciate the drinks. I do.
00:48:30And that's a hell of a story you got.
00:48:32It is.
00:48:33I mean, you should write a book.
00:48:36And I can see, you know, the whole slamming shots thing really, it gives it a certain charm.
00:48:44You're the one she wants, John Burton.
00:48:48You can resist, or you'll try.
00:48:51But in the end, you will not be able to stop her.
00:49:02Thank you, Mr. Brandt.
00:49:06I appreciate the information.
00:49:31Hey, it's John. What's up?
00:49:36What?
00:49:39Where?
00:49:43Oh, fuck. I'll be right there.
00:50:05I'll be right there.
00:50:35I'll be right there.
00:51:05John, look, man, I know you're really upset. Do me a favor, don't leave now, okay?
00:51:31I need your help right now, man.
00:51:32I'm not the right man for the job.
00:51:35Look, you need to hire experts or forensic detectives.
00:51:38I'm just a biologist.
00:51:39You are supposed to be the expert.
00:51:41But not for this shit.
00:51:43Look, my assistant was eaten.
00:51:46And the only information that I can get around here is from a drunken fisherman and a bartender.
00:51:52Who keep telling me about fucking mermaids.
00:51:55Right.
00:51:56Mermaids?
00:51:57Mermaids.
00:51:58Skip.
00:52:00Look, just hand it over to the FBI or the Coast Guard.
00:52:07John, I'm really sorry.
00:52:11I'll get the car back to you tomorrow.
00:52:18Fuck.
00:52:29Fuck.
00:52:59Fuck.
00:53:29Okay, last one, Bill.
00:53:32Seriously?
00:53:33Yeah, I think you've had enough.
00:53:35Bill, take it easy.
00:53:37No more.
00:53:40John!
00:53:42There you are.
00:53:43I thought you left.
00:53:47We need to talk.
00:53:48About what, John?
00:53:49Hey, business of marine biologists.
00:53:52You know exactly about what.
00:53:55Hey, pal, this is no way to talk to a lady.
00:53:58I mean it.
00:53:59We need to talk.
00:54:02I said...
00:54:03Back off, Bill.
00:54:05We need to talk.
00:54:10We're out of here.
00:54:11Alright, Jeff, get him out of here.
00:54:12Come on, let's go.
00:54:13Get up.
00:54:14Come on.
00:54:15Let's go, brother.
00:54:19I bet I know what you need.
00:54:22I need the truth.
00:54:24What do you know about Jack Brand?
00:54:27I know that he's my father.
00:54:32Cut the shit, Abby.
00:54:35Look, I don't know what kind of twisted game you're involved with here,
00:54:38but people are dead.
00:54:40Including Sandy.
00:54:42Oh, yeah, Sandy.
00:54:44I'm sorry about that.
00:54:46It's not a game.
00:55:05Rum?
00:55:06I don't want a drink.
00:55:08I want to know what the fuck is wrong with you.
00:55:10I don't want to talk to you.
00:55:12I don't want to talk to you.
00:55:13I don't want to talk to you.
00:55:15I want to know what the fuck is going on around here.
00:55:18Have your drink and I'll explain everything to you.
00:55:20I at least owe you that.
00:55:22Jack Brand style, huh?
00:55:30Now talk.
00:55:46Where'd you put my drink?
00:55:54God damn it.
00:55:59I can give you things.
00:56:02Don't you want that, John?
00:56:06Let's go for a walk.
00:56:10I was born here.
00:56:12I usually leave, but this year I needed to stay to complete the cycle.
00:56:17Replenish the family.
00:56:19Create a sister.
00:56:21I thought I was going to have to settle for one of those dirty old fishermen,
00:56:24but then you walked in.
00:56:26Well, you and Sandy.
00:56:28Sorry about her, by the way.
00:56:31I just couldn't let her get in between us.
00:56:34Can't you see, John?
00:56:36It's all so perfect.
00:56:43Sorry I can't stay with you tonight.
00:56:46I've got to eat.
00:56:53Sweet dreams.
00:57:12Shit.
00:57:43Shit.
00:57:55Asshole.
00:57:57What the fuck are you doing here?
00:58:12No!
00:58:43Shit.
00:59:09You gotta be fucking kidding me.
00:59:12Shit.
00:59:35Oh, shit.
00:59:42Shit.
00:59:55There you are, John.
00:59:58Got a call from the hotel manager.
01:00:01You were drunk.
01:00:04You sleep on the beach.
01:00:07Skip, she drugged me.
01:00:09And then she took the backpack with the scales in it.
01:00:13And you're referring to...
01:00:16Abby.
01:00:17Abby.
01:00:18The bartender.
01:00:19The bartender, yeah.
01:00:21She didn't want us to do the test on the scales, so she took it.
01:00:25You're obviously drunk, John.
01:00:27She drugged me.
01:00:28Yeah, I'm sorry about this, John.
01:00:30We didn't mention you had a suspended license for a DUI.
01:00:33What?
01:00:34You gotta be kidding me.
01:00:39Sorry, John.
01:01:09Shit.
01:01:16Hey, assholes.
01:01:18I want my phone call.
01:01:22Now that's enough.
01:01:24Look, I had one drink.
01:01:26She put something in it.
01:01:28Not what she says.
01:01:30I don't give a shit what she says.
01:01:32She drugged me.
01:01:33Is that legal here?
01:01:35Drinking is legal, John.
01:01:37Driving under the influence and a suspended license isn't.
01:01:40Okay.
01:01:41Take my blood.
01:01:43You'll find something in it.
01:01:44And it sure as fuck won't be alcohol.
01:01:46Skip, we'll be back soon and he'll give you a breathalyzer.
01:01:51Great.
01:01:52What about my phone call?
01:01:55Like I said.
01:01:56Sheriff will be back soon and you can talk to him about it.
01:02:00They found another victim down on the docks.
01:02:04You don't say.
01:02:06You gonna blame that on me, too?
01:02:16How's he doing?
01:02:17Yep.
01:02:18He's a little hot under the collar, but he's awake.
01:02:20Wants his phone call.
01:02:23All right.
01:02:24I'm gonna go have a talk with him.
01:02:27Well, it's about fucking time.
01:02:29I need to ask you a few questions about your activities last night.
01:02:34Jeff said that you and Bill got into a little running at the bar.
01:02:40Jesus, Skip.
01:02:42He was drunk off his ass.
01:02:44It was nothing.
01:02:46Ask him.
01:02:47I can't.
01:02:48I don't want to.
01:02:49I don't want to.
01:02:50I don't want to.
01:02:51I don't want to.
01:02:52I don't want to.
01:02:53I don't want to.
01:02:55Ask him.
01:02:56I can't.
01:02:58He's dead.
01:02:59He was murdered on his boat.
01:03:02He was torn to shreds.
01:03:05So was my assistant.
01:03:07And so were those fishermen.
01:03:13You'd think I had something to do with it.
01:03:17That's what I'm trying to figure out.
01:03:19Well, if you are, you should be talking to Abby.
01:03:22Because she is in on all of it.
01:03:24Abby?
01:03:26Abby, who barely weighs a hundred pounds.
01:03:28You're telling me that she ripped the guts out of some grown man.
01:03:31Is that it?
01:03:32I know.
01:03:33It sounds crazy.
01:03:34It does.
01:03:35But I'm starting to believe...
01:03:36I think that she is...
01:03:37Oh, no.
01:03:38Come on.
01:03:39John, don't.
01:03:41Don't.
01:03:42I know.
01:03:43You think she's a mermaid?
01:03:46Look.
01:03:48Ask her dad.
01:03:50Her dad?
01:03:52Who's her dad?
01:03:53Jack Brand.
01:03:55You remember I told you.
01:03:56I thought he was nuts.
01:03:57But now...
01:03:59It all makes sense.
01:04:01Look.
01:04:03She needs to breed.
01:04:04And she needs semen.
01:04:06And she needs it from me.
01:04:08I know, Skip, how it sounds.
01:04:10I have a PhD.
01:04:12I know how it sounds.
01:04:14Let's chalk it up to this.
01:04:16Maybe you had a little too much to drink.
01:04:23Give me the breathalyzer, Skip.
01:04:27Hold on.
01:04:46Hold on.
01:04:57Breathe into that.
01:04:58Slowly.
01:05:09Well?
01:05:12Okay, one more time.
01:05:16Slow.
01:05:26Well?
01:05:30Be right back.
01:05:33You don't...
01:05:34Fuck it.
01:05:35Skip, I want a lawyer.
01:05:39And I want my phone call.
01:05:40I have a right to a phone call.
01:05:43I'll just bring you a phone.
01:05:47Fuck.
01:06:04Can I get some privacy, please?
01:06:17Okay.
01:06:30Come on.
01:06:32Hello, John.
01:06:35I need you to get to the sheriff's station.
01:06:38Right now.
01:06:39And explain to them what you did.
01:06:41What did I do?
01:06:43Well, first you drugged me.
01:06:44You killed Bill.
01:06:45I'm assuming.
01:06:47A girl needs nutrition to conceive.
01:06:49Don't be mad at me, John.
01:06:51You're gonna see how mad I am at you
01:06:53when I get my hands around your fucking gill neck.
01:06:57Don't fight it.
01:06:58I told you it's meant to be.

01:07:23And I can't get you on driving
01:07:26with a suspended license
01:07:28because I didn't catch you behind the wheel.
01:07:32Footprints on the boat don't match yours.
01:07:38I got nothing to charge you with.
01:07:40I got nothing to charge you with.
01:07:44You're free to go.
01:08:00I need you to sign this.
