00:00A joint trade and industry and National Bureau of Investigation or NBI team descended on a
00:06Mondescript warehouse that yielded a huge cache of unmarked and generic car batteries
00:12believed to be of substandard quality. Our Clazel Pardilla tells us more.
00:19On the second floor of this warehouse in Barangay Mandesa, Quezon City,
00:23the Department of Trade and Industry and the National Bureau of Investigation intercepted
00:28hundreds of boxes of automated batteries with a total count of 21,000 battery units
00:34valued at close to 94 million pesos. The operation was launched after authorities
00:40received complaints about sale of their cheap batteries that turned out to be unregistered.
00:58According to the Department of Trade and Industry, thousands of batteries stored in that warehouse
01:18pose a safety risk. They both lack an import commodity clearance and a product safety mark,
01:24which means they failed to pass the quality safety muster.
01:28Uncertified and presumably unsafe.
01:49Two business employees have been arrested. The owner is being identified and will face charges
01:54under the Consumer Act and Product Standards laws, which carry penalties of imprisonment and
02:00fines. The Quezon City local government has issued a closure order to seal the warehouse.
02:05Meanwhile, the products will be tested, and if they are found to be substandard,
02:09the DTI will take further action. The agency urges the public to be cautious
02:14of unusually low-priced products and to carefully inspect their purchases.
02:19Clazel Pardilla for the new and better Philippines.
