Cost of living and law and order were on the agenda for the major political parties as they shift into soft campaign mode, with exactly six-months to go before the state election. Premier Roger Cook announced free entry to the zoo for families over spring, while the Liberals want laws to keep repeat offenders out of retail shops.

00:00The Premier bonding with a tree kangaroo at the Perth Zoo, and trying to bond with the
00:09electorate.
00:10We're making a really cool announcement.
00:12We're having a spring sale at the zoo and it's the best bargain ever because it's totally
00:17free.
00:18The free zoo pass covers a family of two adults and two children, with free public transport
00:23thrown in until the end of November, saving each family $110 for a zoo visit.
00:29Vicky and Philip Irvine were looking after their grandkids while mum and dad were at
00:33work.
00:34It would be fantastic to help them with the cost of living and things like that with a
00:39young family.
00:40Kids will love it.
00:41And we're pensioners as well.
00:43My government is about bursting the bubble of the cost of living at the moment.
00:47But for many, the bubble is getting bigger.
00:49ABS data shows Western Australia had the highest percentage average home loan increase of any
00:55state or territory in the year to July.
00:58Up almost 17% from $472,000 to $552,000.
01:05While a trip to a Perth Zoo is a nice to have, Western Australians are struggling to put
01:10food on the table.
01:12We have done a range of cost of living measures.
01:15This is just another.
01:16While the Premier is focusing in on ways to encourage people to come into the zoo, the
01:21Liberals are looking at how to keep what they call repeated thugs out of shops.
01:25Roger Cook's soft touch approach to crime is emboldening criminals.
01:31Promising workplace protection orders to ban people who repeatedly act violently, abuse
01:36or threaten retail employees and customers from the workplace with potential jail time
01:41for breaches.
01:42No retail staff should have to go through what we sometimes go through.
01:47And we have the right to a safe workplace.
01:50The Premier says new laws in July already significantly increased penalties for aggression
01:56against shop workers.
