00:00You received my instruction in your dressing room, respect my
00:06instruction all the time, protect yourself at all time,
00:09touch love, good luck.
00:13And we take a look at the tail of the tape, Mary Spencer and
00:17Naomi Manes, you see the physical advantages that Mary
00:21Spencer will enjoy here tonight. Although 39 years of age, you do
00:27have to wonder if Mary Spencer can't get it done here tonight.
00:31Is this potentially the last big opportunity for Spencer to earn a
00:36world title? This one's scheduled for 10 two minute
00:39rounds.
00:40It's, it's now or never time for Mary Spencer. But we've said
00:43that the last couple of times you've seen her fight. But the
00:45reality is, a lot of women's weight classes are sort of top
00:49heavy with with talent, not a big middle class. So you get a
00:53one or two wins, you are right back in the title picture. But
00:56Mary, Mary Spencer came off of back to back losses to Femke
00:59Hermann. The win that got her back in the title picture was the
01:02last one we saw against Sonja Dwelling. And so now here she is.
01:06But again, at nearly 40, we don't know how many more times
01:10she can repeat that cycle.
01:11Yeah, Hermann certainly an example of a fighter who was able
01:15to bounce back and get another opportunity as is Hannah Rankin,
01:18who Naomi Manes defeated last time out. But again, the age of
01:2239 certainly makes people ask questions about how much time is
01:26left if Spencer can't get it done here tonight.
01:29We were saying at the top of the show that Hannah Rankin fight
01:32really gave Naomi Manes experience and what it's like to
01:36deal with somebody who's both taller than you but also really
01:38aggressive, somebody that comes forward. The difference though,
01:41is that Mary Spencer seems to be a much sharper puncher than
01:46Hannah Rankin was. So that's something else for Naomi Manes
01:49to deal with.
01:50Seeing Manes doing something that she said she would do a lot
01:55of in this fight, just trying to reposition, trying to maneuver
01:58the lead hand of Mary Spencer, trying to get it out of the way
02:01to land that overhand left. She did that, but Spencer, you see
02:05the physicality and the power, just able to force Manes back.
02:14About 15 seconds of the opening round.
02:20These are the moments that Spencer's corner has been
02:22warning her about. They noted that Manes stole a lot of
02:25rounds.
02:31A closely contested opening round in this interim WBA title
02:35fight.
02:42I want you to keep touching with that jab and the straight
02:44punches. Okay, don't go looping too much right now. Keep
02:47touching with the jab here and there. Right hand to the body is
02:50super good. Okay. Now, keep touching the body. I want you
02:58to keep moving forward. Pop, pop, pop. Tighten it, and then
03:01leave it. Anything else, guys?
03:09There's Spencer doing just what her coach asked her not to do.
03:13Throwing a looping right hand, following it with a left hook,
03:16succeeding in driving Naomi Manes back to the ropes, but not
03:20connecting as cleanly as she would like.
03:32Round two underway. You saw in that highlight something that
03:35Manes does quite well, but was also a question coming into this
03:40fight. She counters well, fighting off the ropes, but in a
03:44smaller ring that she was operating in against Hannah
03:47Rankin, and an even larger opponent with more power. There
03:51were questions about whether that strategy could work here
03:53tonight, but there you see her having some success with a nice
03:56flurry off the ropes.
03:57Yes. But also, Mary Spencer is sort of forcing the issue in
04:04ways that Hannah Rankin didn't or couldn't. Just because, again,
04:08because Spencer is a sharper, more authoritative puncher, and
04:12not just sort of tall and long and aggressive.
04:18A straight left hand there from Manes. Manes competed mainly as
04:23a lightweight in the amateurs, and she said that during that
04:27period, she was usually the taller fighter in the ring, and
04:31as a result, it caused her to develop, and she gets rocked by
04:35a nice right hand there from Mary Spencer. Caused her to
04:38develop more of a counterpunching style.
04:40Yes.
04:44Interesting here from Mary Spencer, because we didn't see a
04:46lot of this in previous fights, but you see it's clearly part of
04:50her strategy just to get in close to Naomi Manes and just
04:54lean on her and just impose her length and her leverage and her
04:59size on Naomi Manes, just to wear her out. Now we'll see how
05:03effective it is as the rounds unfold, but we've seen Spencer
05:06do it a couple of times.
05:11Right hand to the body there from Spencer.
05:17Here again, those closing moments that Spencer's corner is
05:21particularly worried about when it comes to Manes. A little bit
05:25of a bolo punch there from Spencer, and now just crowds
05:28Manes to take that away as round two wraps up.
05:37Okay, you see when you put your punches together, she's
05:41tightening up, and then she wants to go with side punches.
05:43She's going with loop punches. She's going like, ah, I want you
05:46to cut down the middle. All right? So go three punches,
05:49tight knee, and boom, boom. Tight, tight, tight, down the middle.
05:53You got this? Now, keep playing with your jab. Don't stop using
05:57that jab. Your jab is magnificent. Okay?
06:01There's Spencer with a straight right hand lead right between
06:04Manes' gloves, more like her corner wants her to do.
06:08It throws that looping right hand, but only because Manes is
06:11moving into it. She's circling. Manes circling clockwise straight
06:14into that right hand.
06:27Cor, you mentioned Manes spent most of her amateur career as a
06:30lightweight, as a professional. She's fought at every weight
06:32from one to three, and she's fought at every weight.
06:36She's fought at every weight from 139 to 160, but she says super
06:41middleweight or super welterweight is her preferred weight class
06:45because that's the weight class that allows her to train hard
06:47without having to worry about cutting weight.
06:50Yeah, and not only not have to worry about cutting weight, but
06:52you know, when you hear fighters say they had to eat their way up
06:55to a weight, she literally did. Like the last two days, Naomi
06:59Manes has been eating anything you can imagine from poutine to
07:03candies to anything to get kind of close to 154, which she still
07:07didn't touch.
07:08She did post that picture on Instagram, on her Instagram story
07:11of the chicken shawarma, the pita bread, roasted potatoes.
07:15She's been eating the way she normally does in training camp,
07:22early in camp. Again, eating like someone that does not have to
07:24worry about losing weight, and she feels that's to her
07:27advantage.
07:29Nice right hand there from Spencer a moment ago, just stepping
07:31to the outside, throwing that down the middle. Interesting
07:35strategy from Spencer's corner, you know, rather than worrying
07:41about what Manes typically offers offensively, which is those
07:45counter flurries off the ropes. They're seeing that as their
07:48opportunity to work and beat her to the punch and work through
07:51the middle. They see that as a big opportunity, like right
07:54there. Although Manes got there first.
07:57Yeah, it's interesting to see whether...
08:02Top there from Manes.
08:03Yes, Spencer can follow her corner's advice from throughout
08:08rounds and from round to round. She landed a beautiful straight
08:11right hand lead there, but I think her corner wants more of
08:14that, not less of that.
08:18Looping shot, scoring year for Naomi Manes. Tried to come up
08:23the middle with that straight left hand.
08:24You also see Manes taking the initiative coming through. We're
08:27not used to necessarily seeing that.
08:29She is again, another straight left hand. And these are those
08:32closing moments that Manes thrived in against Hannah
08:37Rankin, and she might have done it again.
08:38Yes.
08:42Another close round, tough to score. Spencer controlled a lot
08:46of the middle of the round, but if you're a judge and the thing
08:48you remember the most is the last 10 seconds.
08:57Manes with that overhand left, connecting with Spencer's
09:01forehead. Manes coming forward again.
09:06That's that sequence right at the end of the round.
09:09And again, I don't know that Spencer wants to spend that much
09:11time moving backwards.
09:14Romanes knows when to press the action and when to do it, as
09:18we've been pointing out, when to do it in a way that's going to
09:22catch the judge's attention.
09:27Round four underway.
09:41It's been a good fight so far between Mary Spencer and Naomi
09:44Manes.
09:50Manes vying for an interim title, a world title of any sort
09:54of any qualification for the first time in her career.
09:57Mary Spencer, as we've mentioned, fought for the IBF
10:00title twice against Femke Hermans.
10:03If she were to win this combination there from Spencer,
10:08as we've pointed out, she'd become the first Canadian
10:11Indigenous woman to win a world title of any sort in
10:15professional boxing.
10:16It would be a monumental moment for Indigenous sport and for
10:19Canadian sport as a whole.
10:21Corey, these two sequences have sort of been microcosms of what
10:25Spencer's corner wants.
10:26And if she could produce more of these moments, they'd be
10:29really happy.
10:30We saw Manes move in with sort of looping punches, a sweeping
10:34left hook, a sweeping right hand, and Spencer just clipping
10:38her right in between with sharp, straight punches.
10:41She did it with the jabs and then with the right hand a few
10:43years ago.
10:44Manes trying to step in with that right hook, left hand, the
10:56score is up from Manes.
10:58It's a bit of a role reversal here.
10:59Here's Manes coming forward and Spencer moving back.
11:06Body shot there, a move to go from Manes, Spencer.
11:09The early portions of this round look comfortable.
11:13Fighting off the back foot, but now Manes starting to amp up the
11:17pressure.
11:20And this is a pattern we're seeing thus far, Morgan, kind of
11:22a tale of two halves of these rounds.
11:24Yes.
11:35Shot there from Spencer, and that will be the final moment of
11:38the round.
11:42Now she's brushing you, she's leaning, she's falling in your
11:55uppercut.
11:56You wait for her with the check hook, but I want to see the
11:58uppercut too.
11:59Okay, you caught her with nice body shot.
12:02I want you to touch that body again.
12:03On the inside, tight beat.
12:05I want to see that down the middle.
12:07You remember that punch?
12:12Use that jab.
12:19There's Manes missing with a looping right hand, Mary Spencer
12:21making her pay.
12:23Beautiful straight right hand counter.
12:25There's Manes landing a right hook, but then eating a right
12:29hand from Mary Spencer.
12:33And again, Spencer is doing what her corner is asking her to do,
12:36but in spurts, and I'm sure they want her to sustain that
12:42straight, those effective straight long punches.
12:45Not doing enough of it to convince me that she's winning a
12:50lot of these rounds clearly.
12:54Tough for me to get inside a judge's head, but if I'm Mary
12:56Spencer's corner, I want her to do more of that to erase any
12:59doubt.
13:05Here's Manes moving forward.
13:07The sort of situation now where Spencer's corner had called for
13:09a check hook.
13:11And there's Manes catching Spencer with a hook.
13:15A quick little shoeshine combination there for Manes.
13:17You see Matt Cassavon giving the last two rounds to Manes.
13:24Spencer tried to crowd her along the ropes, but again, Manes
13:27able to get compact enough to throw those flurries off the
13:30ropes.
13:31She's very, very good at being able to operate from that
13:34position.
13:35Yeah, we talked to Manes yesterday.
13:36She is ambidextrous.
13:38She can fight orthodox or southpaw.
13:40She feels her best punch is the left hand from the southpaw
13:44stance.
13:44You saw her try to dig into Mary Spencer's body.
13:49Mary Spencer always has fantastic fight camps here in
13:53Montreal.
13:53Naomi Manes, we referenced it earlier on in the broadcast.
13:57She spent most of her camp sparring Terry Harper, the full
13:59champion.
14:00Yes.
14:01And so, yeah, she's used to high level opposition.
14:04She's used to crafty sparring partners.
14:06It's not one of these situations where you have to imagine you
14:10spar with a bunch of B-level fighters and have to imagine
14:14what an A-level fighter is going to be like on fight night.
14:16She's been sparring with A-level partners.
14:20About 20 seconds of round five.
14:26Spencer tries to come over the top of the right hand, catches
14:28the shoulder of Manes.
14:30Closing moments of the round.
14:36Spencer finds a route to the body for the right hand, and
14:41that will do it.
14:49You start moving backward without throwing anything.
14:52OK, now you let her work.
14:54It's not her.
14:55It's your fight.
14:56You got me.
14:57I want you to fucking go there and to push her.
15:00OK, good, good, tight, deep pressure.
15:02Put your punches together.
15:04I don't accept that they're moving you backward.
15:07All right.
15:08Now, I want a big, stiff jab.
15:11I want you to dig the body.
15:13Every time she's inside, boom, boom.
15:16You got this?
15:17Come on, yo, switch back on.
15:19You switched off that round.
15:20I don't like that shit, OK?
15:22I don't want that.
15:22Switch back on this round.
15:24You're not tired and you're not going to get tired.
15:26Come on.
15:27Don't let this little girl push you around.
15:29Come on, man, let's go.
15:35Well, a major total shift.
15:37Yes.
15:38In the corner of Mary Spencer, Sam Takari and Brian Cohen,
15:42the manager of Mary Spencer, also in the corner, really
15:45turning up the heat in the Spencer corner.
15:48And in talking to her team throughout Fight Week,
15:51they said that that's what Mary responds best to.
15:54Yes, is that she's the type of fighter that
15:57sometimes needs, but often just wants or appreciates
16:01somebody that's going to light a fire under her.
16:04And we're seeing a much more aggressive Mary Spencer
16:06this round.
16:07And again, the key, as always, is whether that motivation
16:11merges with some technical and tactical chops.
16:15And you put those things together and you can make something happen.
16:17Because motivation on its own, if you don't have a game plan,
16:21don't have the skills to carry it out, is it going to do much for you?
16:24Well, if the judges scorecards look anything like Matt Cassavance,
16:28it's indeed time for Mary Spencer to turn things around here.
16:33And certainly in the last round, you know, as I was watching things,
16:37Morgan, I was thinking, however, you score that last round,
16:40Manes looked like the fighter who was more sure of her offer.
16:43Yes, as she is right now.
16:48Mary Spencer, you know, that motivation
16:51got her through the first 30 seconds of the round.
16:55But now we're sort of back into a pattern where Manes is calling the shots.
17:00Manes is fighting the fight that she wants to fight.
17:02And Mary Spencer now is having to make adjustments.
17:09Mary Spencer lands that straight right hand, open the sequence.
17:12Manes responds with two or three shots of her own.
17:15The body shot from Spencer there a moment ago.
17:18And again, Corey, because this is what we've seen is flashes of Mary Spencer
17:22doing what her corner needs her to do.
17:24But this inability to sustain it.
17:28She's got countered by a nice right hook in that previous sequence.
17:32And here again, perhaps where these rounds will be won or lost.
17:37And again, it's just the hustle of Naomi Manes and a deep breath
17:40from Mary Spencer as she heads to the corner.
17:49All right. Put your hat down.
17:54I don't want you to sit on that.
17:55We still have four rounds to go.
17:57All right. You cannot give me something less than that.
18:01I want you to have a big jab and you put your punch together.
18:04Every time she comes with something, you come back right away.
18:07You got this.
18:09You're getting her build confidence.
18:11All right. Come on. You're not tired, right?
18:13Come on. Show me you're not tired.
18:15Strong position. Hands up.
18:17Big job. Put your punch together.
18:20You're getting the liver this round.
18:22One, two, liver. One, two, three, two, liver.
18:24Liver. Deliver all the rounds, OK?
18:27Make you a murderer. Even she's tough on you.
18:29Let's go. And we're starting. We're starting, OK?
18:32Come on. You got this. Get those punches.
18:34Let's go.
18:45Round seven underway in Oregon.
18:47That is the sound of a corner that is evidently concerned
18:51about where the momentum of this fight is headed.
18:53There's the momentum of the fight.
18:54And I don't know about you, Corey, and I like Brian Cole.
18:57But when I hear somebody in the corner
19:01constantly having to remind a fighter that they are not tired,
19:06all that does is tell me that fatigue, conditioning,
19:09these are issues.
19:17One of the last edicts in the Spencer corner
19:19was to make this a little bit dirty.
19:21You see Spencer not afraid to grab a hold there a moment ago.
19:31Quick combination there from Manes.
19:33Yeah, and there's Spencer just sort of getting out work.
19:36They were at a stalemate there for a second.
19:38Each one sort of seemed to be waiting for the referee to break them.
19:41But their hands were free and Manes got busy.
19:45And Spencer still was waiting for some reason.
19:52Speed left hand there from Manes.
19:57Right there, like that, that sequence right there.
20:00Well, Manes was first.
20:03And Spencer responds by sort of bullying her to the ropes, which is fine.
20:07You know, imposing her size on Naomi Manes, but it's not scoring.
20:12Naomi Manes has dreamt about these moments her whole career.
20:17She said in an interview with Jackie Lee Price a couple of years ago
20:20that she was raised by a single mother.
20:22She's used to being able to exist with less money.
20:26And she said, the only thing I care about in boxing,
20:29can I fill my fridge?
20:30Can I make my rent?
20:31And she's been able to do that,
20:33but certainly has even bigger dreams here tonight.
20:35That sort of sounds like freelance writing for you.
20:38Can I fill my fridge? Can I pay the rent?
20:40That's right. We are kindred spirits.
20:48That'll do it for round seven.
20:58To give all you've got, you want this?
21:11How bad? How bad do you want it?
21:14Well, it's time to go now. It's not in the dressing room.
21:17It's right now.
21:18So now you go and you put your punches together.
21:19Every time she throws, I want you right back at her.
21:22You got me. Come on.
21:24Stop covering up and just survive it,
21:26because that's what you're trying to do.
21:28Be first with your jab.
21:29Put your punches together.
21:31Put everything off your jab. You're going to be fine.
21:34Don't let her outwork you. Don't let her outwork you.
21:38We all want this, but you need to go there and show us.
21:41Come on.
21:51It's a fascinating interplay in Mary Spencer's corner
21:54right now, because her coach, he's talking about ...
22:00He's coming from the perspective of what he would like
22:02Mary Spencer to be.
22:04Brian Cohen, the manager,
22:06sounds a lot more like what is actually happening.
22:10And so the coach wants full offense, full aggressiveness,
22:14asking her how bad she wants it.
22:16Brian Cohen says, stop covering up and trying to survive.
22:20Right. Yeah, Brian Cohen providing the even tougher love.
22:24In that corner right now.
22:26Don't wait for her.
22:29And I don't know if the people watching on television
22:33can hear it. We can hear it here.
22:34You can hear Brian Cohen saying, stop waiting for her.
22:39Take a look at Matt Kacieval's scorecards.
22:42He has Naomi Manez ahead,
22:44scoring that seventh round for Manez,
22:46giving the sixth round to Mary Spencer,
22:48and that was a better round for Spencer,
22:50but one I think that you could understandably score.
22:54For Manez, and if you do, then, you know,
22:58this is still potentially a winnable fight for Mary Spencer
23:03if she can bank these rounds.
23:04Yes, and that's a big if.
23:07And the rounds that Manez is winning,
23:09she's winning more definitively.
23:11Like, you're still not necessarily winning by a bigger margin
23:14because they're all one-point rounds
23:15unless there's a knockdown,
23:17but the rounds that Manez has won, she has won more clearly.
23:22That's a counter right hook over the top there for Manez.
23:26Sorry to cut you off there, Morgan.
23:27No, it's okay.
23:27You saw Mary Spencer land a check left hook
23:30as Manez sort of bored her way in.
23:32But again, this has been the pattern of this fight
23:35with Mary Spencer is that for flashes,
23:38for five-second spurts,
23:40she does exactly what her corner wants and needs her to do,
23:43but she's had trouble sustaining it,
23:46frankly getting outworked in a lot of these sequences.
23:51Oh, Mary.
23:59Up!
24:01My right hand is working, gotta follow up.
24:04Come on, Mary.
24:06We've got two rounds to go.
24:07You need to show me your heart.
24:09You need to show me that you wanna knock her out,
24:11but you cannot knock her out if you don't throw any punches.
24:13Put them together.
24:14You need to punch every time you're on the inside.
24:17The right hand is there.
24:19The right hand is there every time.
24:20Winning this fight, not necessarily with power,
24:24but with timing and tactics and hustle.
24:27A lot of these stalemates,
24:29she's just outworking Mary Spencer.
24:31This is a right hand by Mary Spencer
24:33and immediate answer from Naomi Madness.
24:36In the rope, they break you,
24:38then you go again, back line.
24:39All right?
24:40On the inside, boom.
24:41Go, over the top.
24:42Wake up, wake up.
24:44Come on.
24:45Two more times.
24:50We heard the corner of Mary Spencer.
24:52They believe they need a knockout,
24:54or at least that's what they're conveying
24:56to their fighter right now.
24:57And Morgan, I think whether that's true or not,
25:00that might be what Mary Spencer needs to hear right now,
25:02because going at these rounds
25:05as if you're just trying to win the round,
25:07clearly is not working for her right now.
25:09Absolutely.
25:11The sense of urgency grows from round to round.
25:14You hear it in Mary Spencer's corner.
25:17And this is the first time we've heard them
25:19raise the specter of a knockout.
25:21After this fight goes in the distance,
25:22there are five and a half minutes left to fight.
25:27But in the seven and a half rounds
25:29that we've seen up until now,
25:31we haven't seen Mary Spencer land the kind of punch
25:33that makes us think that a clean knockout is an option.
25:38And so her only option now is to do,
25:41what she's doing now is try to outwork Naomi Madness.
25:45Even though Mary Spencer has been outworked
25:47to this point in this fight.
25:50Trying to bully Madness against the ropes,
25:52trying to push off, create a lane
25:54for that left hook to the body,
25:56which she did land there.
25:57Spencer corner likes that shot.
25:59And here's Madness now looking like a sharper puncher,
26:01looking like a much sharper puncher
26:03than the fighter we saw against Hannah Rankin
26:05a few months ago.
26:06That's counter shot there from Spencer.
26:08Beautiful left hook in between Madness's punches.
26:11It has Madness holding on.
26:15And if Mary Spencer could do more of that,
26:18I think she would lower their collective blood pressure
26:20in her corner right now.
26:24Final 30 seconds of round nine.
26:35Madness once again with that hustle to the body.
26:37Right, here's Spencer again, imposing her size and strength,
26:41leaning on Madness, pushing her backwards,
26:42but that doesn't score points for her.
26:46And here's Madness flurrying at the end of the round,
26:48maybe stealing another round.
26:53One round remains in this interim world title fight.
27:01A career-changing moment for both Spencer and Madness.
27:05Get back, get back, no, you need to be first.
27:11You need to give everything, it's the last one.
27:14We're slipping, we're letting the round go
27:15because you look at her.
27:16Last round with Madness Ling.
27:18I want you to put your punches together.
27:20Every time you're inside, no, I don't give you water.
27:22I want you to go there and win that fight.
27:25You stand up, look at me.
27:27I want you to go there and give all you've got.
27:29All right?
27:31You gotta walk her down the whole fucking round.
27:33The whole round.
27:34And you need to dig that body inside, be dirty, punch her.
27:37You can beat me in the elbow, whatever you want.
27:40Walk her down.
27:45It's now or never, it's now or never.
27:47All you've got, all you've got, man.
27:50All you've got, now or never.
27:54The energies in either corner
27:57and the body language of both fighters, Morgan,
28:00could not be any different right now.
28:02Absolutely, and Mary Spencer now
28:06on top of everything she's going through in this fight,
28:09she's having to consolidate a lot of information
28:12in that corner.
28:13A lot of talk from a lot of different people,
28:15each of them saying something sort of the same,
28:16but slightly different.
28:18But Brian Cole probably gave her the best advice
28:19is you have to walk her down.
28:22But it's also what she should have been trying to do
28:24for the whole rest of the fight.
28:29Oh my goodness, has that scored a knockdown?
28:33Do we have instant replay in this program?
28:35Oh my God, I would be very interested to see the replay.
28:37That is very helpful for Mary Spencer.
28:40That is extremely helpful.
28:42I didn't know that that was an appropriate call.
28:45Madness now has to score a knockdown
28:48if we want to absolutely dominate the rest of this round,
28:51just to keep this round sort of close.
28:53Right, and if the scorecards reflect
28:56how Matt Kassabaugh is scoring this,
28:58that might've been a fight changing moment.
29:00Yes.
29:06And if that is a fight changing moment, Morgan,
29:10you know what the discourse is going to be
29:12after this fight with an advantageous call
29:15for a home fighter, and you know exactly
29:17what's going to be discussed.
29:19Yeah, and we're going to blame Mary Spencer
29:22as if she was the referee making that call.
29:25But all Mary Spencer can do is fight.
29:26And this has been a better round for Mary Spencer.
29:32Even if it's not clean,
29:34she's doing what she needs to do
29:35in terms of walking Naomi Madness down,
29:38taking the initiative, not getting outworked.
29:43But minus that knockdown, I wouldn't know,
29:45I wouldn't be sure if it was enough
29:47to swing the round.
29:48Now if Madness is landing
29:50some of her best shots in the fight this round as well.
29:55A terrific round of boxing, potentially marred
29:59by a knockdown call that in real time was very questionable.
30:04I am very interested to see this replay.
30:07I didn't see a clean punch lead to that knockdown,
30:10but I don't have the same point of view
30:12that the referee has.
30:20So a scorecard nail biter here
30:23between Spencer and Madness.
30:27A lot of uncertainty in the Spencer corner right now.
30:34Let's take a look back at the highlights.
30:36Let's see if we can get a look at this knockdown.
30:44There's sort of a cuffing left hook.
30:47Oh boy.
30:50A cuffing left hook and a right hand to the body.
30:53That punch missed.
30:56Right hand to the body.
30:57Oh man.
31:00I mean, that looked like a fighter, Morgan,
31:02that was on her way down because of the clinch,
31:06because of the downward pressure.
31:09Giving the benefit of the doubt to the referee,
31:12it might've looked like in real time,
31:15Spencer landing a body shot and Madness taking a knee.
31:19Right.
31:20So it did sort of have that look.
31:23So from that perspective,
31:25I could see maybe why it looks like a knockdown
31:27when you scored a knockdown.
31:28And of course, you have to make these calls
31:31very quickly.
31:32You have to make that decision.
31:34We have the advantage of looking at it
31:36from the television point of view,
31:37from a hard camera, looking at a replay.
31:40Repeatedly.
31:41Repeatedly.
31:44So within like a quick flare up of action,
31:47that could very well have looked like a landed body shot
31:50and a hurt fighter taking a knee.
31:52So will that knockdown be the difference on the scorecards?
32:07Tense moments here in the Montreal Casino.
32:17A lot of Mary Spencer fans in attendance here tonight.
32:20They were kept quiet for large portions of this fight.
32:24But was Spencer able to grind this one out?
32:41We await the scorecards.
32:43Nervous moments for the 29 year old Naomi Madness
32:47and the 39 year old Mary Spencer.
33:01And it appears the scorecards are entering the ring.
33:05Let's send it down to find out the winner.
33:10Ladies and gentlemen, after 10 rounds,
33:12we go to the scoreboard for the decision.
33:14Ladies and gentlemen, after 10 rounds,
33:17we go to the judges scorecards for the decision.
33:20Les juges remettent des cartes identiques de 96 à 93,
33:25tous en faveur de la gagnante par décision unanime.
33:29All three judges score the fight 96-93
33:34for the winner by unanimous decision.
33:37And now the WBA Interim Super Welterweight
33:42Champion of the World, Mary Spencer!
33:47Mary Spencer!
33:51So some quick boxing math will tell you
33:54that every judge had that fight,
33:56six rounds of four with Mary Spencer,
33:58giving her the extra point for the knockdown
34:02in the 10th round.
34:06Let's say at 96-93 for Spencer
34:09are going to be scorecards that will be hard to digest
34:12for some people.
34:12Yes.
34:13To be perfectly honest,
34:14even the look on the faces of the audience here
34:18and the look on the face of the people
34:20in the ring.
34:21Affiliated with Mary Spencer.
34:22Yes.
34:23It's somewhat muted celebration right now.
34:26That was the thinnest of thin decisions,
34:32like an actual margin of victory,
34:35regardless of what the scorecards say,
34:37regardless of the extra point that Mary Spencer got
34:41for scoring that knockdown in the ninth round.
34:43Because otherwise we'd have a 96-94,
34:45which is as close as you can get in a 10 round fight.
34:47That's not a draw.
34:48And again, those rounds that Mary Spencer won,
34:52she did not win by as much as the rounds
34:56that Naomi Moniz won.
34:57But again, as our man Russ Amber often says,
35:00we're really dealing with sort of a two-point system.
35:03Right.
35:05Because every round is decided by a one point unless.
