00:00Listen to my instructions at all times, watch your head, no low blows and no holding.
00:07When I say brace, step back, okay? Protect yourselves at all times.
00:16So Joshua Frankham's back in the ring here at York, three weeks after his latest win.
00:22And in there with an Ironman from Bulgaria in action.
00:27So far the Bulgarian's only won 11 of 76, but he's only been stopped twice in a 10-year professional career.
00:35What are you expecting here, Rich?
00:37Well, he's just boxed, hasn't he, three or four weeks ago, so he's just got a kick on now.
00:42He's obviously been out of the ring for a while before that.
00:45He's a good kid, Joshua Frankham, but he's just got to get back to being busy again, Fletch.
00:49So this will be another contest back onto that road in his recovery, really.
00:55And to get back boxing and box on a regular basis, and that's when he'll perform better.
01:00So I'm expecting a little bit better than what we've seen three or four weeks ago.
01:05And like I say, it's another one of his comeback bouts.
01:09Joshua Frankham in the white trunks with the red, the all-gold of the man from Bulgaria.
01:1571st fight for a meal of 11 wins and 56 defeats.
01:18Frankham's won all 10 so far with the two stoppages.
01:25And the crowd building nicely here at York Hall, building up to the main event later on.
01:29Sam Noakes is topping the bill before that.
01:31The vacant Commonwealth featherweight title fight between Masoud Abdullah and George Stewart.
01:37And always an interesting night of boxing when we're here at this famous old venue.
01:48I think Emilov also, Fletch, is obviously a very awkward opponent.
01:53He's only been stopped twice, so he's a tough nut to crack.
01:56So Frankham here has got to work for this victory if he's to get the win.
02:01And Emilov, as we know, he's very experienced.
02:04Boxes anyone at the drop of a hat.
02:06And he's tough in these situations.
02:08You've got to stick to your boxing, try and break the opponent down.
02:11Yeah, bring him onto shots like that.
02:13And it's not a bad start now for Frankham.
02:16Just maintaining that gap, which is important.
02:20The referee, by the way, is Amy Pugh.
02:24She's a trialist, so she doesn't score the bout tonight.
02:27She's an amateur herself, and she's in there as the referee.
02:31But the scoring will be done by Mark Bates.
02:33That process is going to work.
02:50Feeling out-processed here, Richie, in the first round.
02:54Yeah, very much so.
02:56That's what Frankham's doing.
02:58Emilov also, just on the outside.
03:00That's it, a slow jab from him.
03:04Just gets punished with that fast right-hand counter from Frankham.
03:08That was a good shot indeed.
03:10Emilov, he got caught there.
03:12It's all due to that slow jab and slow feet coming forward.
03:16Can't afford to make mistakes like that against Frankham.
03:28And there's the end of the third.
03:46If you need business insurance, join nearly one million customers who trust...
04:06So welcome back to York Hall.
04:11In Joshua Frankham's corner.
04:14This is six rounds of middleweight.
04:27Just on the subject of Emilov.
04:29We saw him take a couple of rounds off Carl Thale here last October.
04:33That was the night that Frankham beat George Davies,
04:35a man who spent a lot of his career travelling up and down the United Kingdom
04:39to take on all comers.
04:41He's the lifeblood of this sport in many ways, isn't he, Richie?
04:44Yeah, absolutely. He's a really good German. He's tough.
04:47One of his problems here, though,
04:49he's just coming in a little bit too low behind his jab,
04:51and then he's just inviting that right-hand counter from Frankham.
04:55As he's coming forward, Emilov, he's leading with his jab,
04:59but his hands are very low.
05:02So as he's coming forward, he's trying to dip the head down,
05:05but he's going to walk onto that right-hand counter.
05:08No question, it's an easy shot to throw for Frankham.
05:10He's waiting for Emilov to actually come forward now with that jab,
05:14and then that's when he comes back with that right-hand counter.
05:17And it's landing because of that low lead hand that he's got, Emilov.
05:23So he's got to just tighten up a little bit,
05:25and maybe occasionally just move off to his right,
05:27rather than drifting round to his left and walking onto the shot.
05:32I mentioned he's something of an iron man.
05:34He's only been stopped twice in his career.
05:36The last time he was stopped was by Sam Maxwell back in 2017.
05:40So the fact he fights often,
05:43he's always a man that gives younger fighters,
05:47fighters hoping to be on the way up rounds, experience,
05:51the kind of fighters that the likes of Joshua Frankham need to be in with
05:55as he tries to rise up the sports rankings.
05:58Just finding his range now, Frankham, with those straight shots,
06:01which is good to see.
06:02So he's adjusting his feet just to maintain that gap
06:05and bring Emilov onto the punches,
06:08which is good stuff from him.
06:12Very often you see boxers throwing shots
06:15and then fall in and smother their work, they get too close,
06:18but here he's just maintaining that gap.
06:20Good boxing you see there, good one-two there, right hand,
06:23and then just maintains the gap again by just taking a step back
06:27rather than going forward.
06:30He's got a few here supporting him tonight, Joshua Frankham.
06:34Into the final minute of the second round here.
06:39He's eight years younger than Emilov, slightly taller.
06:45He's been the more accurate of the two in there so far.
06:49Not a bad response though there from Emilov.
06:53Occasionally he gets an opportunity on the inside,
06:55and he did there, throwing three or four shots.
06:58So he's taking advantage of that.
07:00A bit of a lapse in concentration maybe from Frankham there.
07:20Wrestle the ropes.
07:21Very, very untidy.
07:23A little smile on the face of Joshua Frankham
07:26in what's turned out to be a pretty untidy end to round two.
07:31LAUGHTER
07:43What's wrong with the car?
07:44It's OK, lads. I'm with the AA.
07:48Ah! Bombay mix.
07:50Because the AA has more expert patrols across the country,
07:54you'll be back on the road in no time.
07:57No wonder more people choose the AA.
07:59Join today.
08:05So welcome back to York Hall.
08:08The start of this car tonight that has Sam Noakes at the top of it,
08:12Masoud Abdullah fighting George Stewart.
08:15Two unbeaten fighters for the Bacon Commonwealth featherweight championship.
08:19You'll see Stephen Cairns and Luke McCormack,
08:21Charlie Hickford as well tonight.
08:24Frankham, who's in there now, is from a fighting family.
08:27His uncle Gypsy Johnny Frankham was the British light heavyweight champion,
08:31once sparred with Muhammad Ali, Tyson Fury's cousin,
08:35and also Richie, which is a significant motivation in the current climate.
08:40He's got a wedding to pay for, so that has to be top of the bill.
08:43Absolutely.
08:46He's just thrown the best shot of the contest for me, Frankham.
08:49That right uppercut, there it is there.
08:51That wasn't too far away.
08:53He just threw one earlier, it was a cracking shot,
08:56so showing good variation.
08:58And Emilov, as we've said, coming forward,
09:01his head dipped a little bit and Frankham has just changed the angle there.
09:05Not the right hand, the straight right hand,
09:08but the uppercut now is paying dividends for him.
09:11There it is again, look, not too far away.
09:14So he's thinking about Mrs. Frankham and he's experimenting
09:17and he's getting through with some good shots.
09:19They're starting to have more and more success,
09:21power shots starting to land on the bulk area.
09:24It's extremely durable.
09:41See, good work from Frankham there,
09:43but they're just an example of just getting a little bit too close
09:46after he's landed the shot.
09:48So a couple of good shots have gone in,
09:50but he's just got a little bit too close
09:52and allowed Emilov then to come back at him.
09:54So he just needs to try and maintain the gap after he's punched
09:57and move off to the side occasionally.
09:59And if he maintains that gap,
10:01then that really reduces the risk of getting caught
10:04after he's landed his own shot.
10:19One thing we can confidently say
10:21is that Emilov isn't a fighter that gets deterred easily.
10:25Happy to come forward and soak up whatever comes his way.
10:30Yeah, he's a tough nut, isn't he?
10:32And very often in these situations, Fletcher,
10:35you have to just vary the attacks and maybe target the body.
10:39A lot of these Germans, they've got good chins,
10:41then the body shots, sometimes they come undone
10:46with the shots downstairs.
10:48He's been with some good fighters as well, Emilov,
10:51the likes of Harlem Eubank, Jack Flatley, Brad Pauls, among others.
10:55Brad Pauls, of course, who we saw beat Nathan Heaney
10:58to become the British middleweight champion a few weeks ago.
11:01He's not too bothered who he's in with,
11:03he's always ready to turn up for work,
11:05and we're seeing that again tonight here at the York Hall.
11:07Yeah, and he's tough, isn't he? And he's fairly dangerous.
11:10He's having a good little spell here,
11:12but Francombe's just allowed him to get a little bit close.
11:15So when he's up close and he's making it rough and tough on the inside,
11:19and making it scrappy, that's part of his game plan.
11:22If he's up close to you, then he can have some success, Emilov.
11:27BELL RINGS
11:39Next up tonight, we're going to see that man, Luke McCormack.
11:43Second professional fight, won his first one via stoppage,
11:47working on the pads in there with Ben Davidson.
11:50He is a destructive and talented individual,
11:54a man who's made for this sport, Rich.
11:56Yeah, he is indeed.
11:57Obviously, I've worked with him in his Olympic cycle,
12:00and he was unlucky, actually, in the Tokyo Olympics,
12:03cos he went out to the events with gold medalist Andy Cruz of Cuba,
12:07and who was, as we know, he's a top-class pro now himself.
12:12But yeah, he was a good fighter, Luke McCormack,
12:14as an international GB boxer.
12:16He'd take on anyone, really strong and very skilful.
12:19I can tell, by the way, he's pounding that body belt
12:21around Ben Davidson's ribs that he's ready for work.
12:24Seek and destroy tends to be the motto.
12:26You wouldn't fancy that pledge, would you?
12:28Not at all, no. I'm quite happy sat next to you.
12:33So, the fourth of six at middleweight,
12:35the unbeaten Joshua Francom against the journeyman from Bulgaria,
12:39Ankel Emilov.
12:45I think it's fair to say the win he had against George Davy here last year
12:48is the best we've seen of Francom.
12:50Both unbeaten on the night.
12:51Francom had to pick himself up off the canvas in the sixth
12:54before earning a points victory.
12:56Just wonder whether he'd like to be a little bit more active, Richie,
12:59have a few more fights and be in the ring a little bit more.
13:01That's the one thing that's really been missing for him.
13:03Yeah, indeed.
13:04But Emilov's experience is actually showing here, Fletch,
13:08because you can see that he knows that if he gets up close to Francom,
13:13he's having a little bit more success.
13:15So, he's gambling a little bit because he's coming forward
13:18and he's probably open to a few more shots.
13:20But nevertheless, he hasn't come here to lie down
13:22and he knows that if he gets up close,
13:24he'll have a little bit more success than what he's had at long range.
13:27And that's what he's doing now, Emilov.
13:29He's coming forward, trying to close that gap down.
13:33There's that short right uppercut that Francom was able to land
13:36as the Bulgarian came in.
13:38It's been a good punch for him so far tonight.
13:46Yeah, that's good work there from Francom.
13:48In these situations, you've got to try and avoid the ropes, Fletch.
13:51Ropes and the corners.
13:53Try and box in the ring space.
13:54See, Francom doesn't need to be there.
13:56That's when your feet will come square
13:58and that will bring Emilov really into it.
14:01So, yeah, boxing from there.
14:02That's where you're boxing and make your movements circular.
14:06And then Emilov will struggle more.
14:16Nice body shot there.
14:18And again.
14:19Nice uppercut too.
14:20Richie just sneaked through, didn't he?
14:22Switch the angle then.
14:24Switch of attack.
14:25Body to head.
14:26Good sort of right hook downstairs
14:28and then whip that right uppercut through the middle.
14:30Good work.
14:33Yeah.
14:34Yeah.
14:35Yeah.
14:36Yeah.
14:37Yeah.
14:38Yeah.
14:39Yeah.
14:40Yeah.
14:41Yeah.
14:42Yeah.
14:43Yeah.
14:44Yeah.
14:45Yeah.
14:46Yeah.
14:47Yeah.
14:48Yeah.
14:49Yeah.
14:51That really needed to say that the classier stuff in there
14:54has been from Joshua Francom,
14:56which as you'd expect,
14:57against the level of opposition that
14:59he's in there with tonight .
15:02It doesn't detract, though, from the determination
15:04that Emilov always brings with him
15:06when he steps through the ropes.
15:07Gives anyone a good fight, doesn't he?
15:09And what Francom is doing there with that little.
15:11little, he just puts his foot down as a little feint, there it is there, because he wants
15:15Emilov to actually lead, so he's trying to trigger the attack and then come back with
15:19the counter, just feinting with that front foot and the front hand, so he wants his opponent
15:24to come at him.
15:34So let's have a look at some of Joshua Francom's work in the previous round.
15:37There, nice little long left hook there, wasn't it?
15:42This was a good move, right hook downstairs and then whips that right hook through the
15:46middle, there it is there, different angle, nice bit of work that was.
15:52Right, keep popping that jab, pop, pop, then down, round the side, then step back, then
15:58come again, boom, do the same again.
16:01So I'm hitting you to put you in shots, and then you're stepping into it.
16:04What's happening? Feels like I'm missing everything.
16:06You're not, throwing the jab, right hand to the body, round the back of the elbow, yeah?
16:10Step back, finish it now, one step back, one step to the side, don't go back to the straight
16:15line, keep popping that jab.
16:17So two to go.
16:38Just looking at the work that Emilov's done, Richie, over the years, he's crammed 77 fights
16:44into a 10-year professional career, he fought 11 times last year, 11 the year before, I'm
16:48not quite sure what's gone off this year, this is only the second time that we've seen
16:51him in 2024, and that kind of inactivity must have driven him mad.
16:55Yeah, incredible.
16:57Like I say, he's a real decent journeyman, he's tough, he's awkward, he's only been stopped
17:04twice, and always gives a good account of himself and comes to win, comes to have a
17:11go, and that's what you want, he will learn off this, Joshua Franken.
17:17Good learning fights, and that's what this is for Franken, most definitely.
17:32Tends to have to go the distance, Franken, in his fights, his last stoppage was against
17:35Dario Barroso in March of 2022, and he's never really had Emilov in any kind of trouble
17:42in there, even though he's been landing the better stuff.
17:45I think Emilov is starting to feel the pace a little bit here now, Fletch, and I think
17:50it's because Franken's landed a couple of good shots here and there, and that naturally
17:54slows your opponent down when you're hitting them with some clean shots, and that's what's
17:57happening, and Emilov just slowing the tempo down, and that's probably suited with Franken
18:03a little bit better.
18:08Suspect if Franken is going to find the big shot tonight, it may well be this uppercut
18:12that he's had a lot of success with.
18:19Moving towards the final minute of the penultimate round.
18:22And that may be, Fletch, why Emilov is so reluctant to come forward, because a couple
18:26of rounds earlier he was really going at Franken, trying to get up close, but he's been caught
18:31with that uppercut several times now, and I think it's, yeah, it's definitely had an
18:36effect on him.
18:38He's naturally slowed down, he's tiring a little bit, and that's just allowed Franken
18:42now to pick his shots a little bit better.
18:57Franken landing to the Emilov body, still nice and patient in there.
19:01Joshua Franken, final 25 seconds of round five.
19:06Looks very, very tired, the Bulgarian now, those body shots will start to take their
19:11toll, and he's going to become easier and easier to hit in there for Joshua Franken.
19:16Just missed there with that flashing uppercut again, Rich.
19:19Yeah, and just maintaining that gap.
19:22See, that's where Emilov does his best work in its short range.
19:52Throw your hands from the centre of the ring, don't let it go back to the ropes, don't let
19:56it get close.
19:57Here you go again, step back, back to the centre, do the same again, but let your hands
20:01go more.
20:02Yeah?
20:03Double jab right hand to the body, double jab straight hand, throw that right hand to
20:05the body a couple of times, just switch it to the end.
20:07Yeah?
20:08All the way to the switch, mate.
20:10All around.
20:11Stick to the centre.
20:13Yeah, bully him from the centre, but keep the distance.
20:15Yeah, that's quicker.
20:17Come on.
20:23Centre, six, final round.
20:26So all set for the final round, fourth successive fight at York Hall for Joshua Franken.
20:31The previous three were all points victories.
20:34Unless he can find the stoppage, the big punch in this sixth round, and it looks like he
20:39might have to go the full distance again.
20:42Yeah, he's just got to finish the show now, Franken, with some good boxing.
20:47Maintain that gap.
20:48Concentrate on those straight shots and try and bring Emil over that front foot and bring
20:53him onto that odd right uppercut occasionally.
20:55We'll just see this one out now.
20:57It's been a good, decent workout.
20:59Again, he's needed it, remember.
21:01He was in about three weeks ago, so this is another comeback contest for him.
21:09And again, he probably needs to box in the next four or five weeks, Fletcher, if he comes
21:14through this one okay.
21:16Oh, and as I say that, he's got a little cut on the left.
21:21It looks like the left eyelid.
21:24And that's...
21:26Just before the blood started to flow, Richie was pouring at it.
21:29He realised, Joshua Franken, that something had gone wrong, knew what had happened, and
21:34he can see that the blood now started to flow down the left side of his face.
21:38I mean, he shouldn't be a factor at this stage of the fight.
21:41No, it's terribly unlucky.
21:42You know, we'll have to see if it was a blow, whether it was a head clash.
21:46But when the heads do come close, these things can happen.
21:49But that's terribly unlucky, that is.
21:51Well, it's also encouraged Emilov to try and find a big finish from somewhere.
21:55He's being spurred on by the side to the cut.
21:59Still half of this round to go.
22:01Round six at middleweight.
22:03What a really disappointing situation that's developed here for Joshua Franken with the cut.
22:09A fight that he was in complete control of, and that's the last thing that he would have wanted to see.
22:13But he's rallied here, cleared his head, and started to put his punches together again.
22:17Yeah, some lovely work there.
22:19You see him maintaining that gap as he's doing it.
22:21Two's, three's going in from Franken.
22:24And just keeping his distance, boxing mid to long.
22:29And obviously when you're boxing like that, there's less of a risk of you actually getting caught, heads clashing.
22:37So yeah, lovely boxing again from Franken there.
22:52No surprise here that Franken's on the back foot towards the end of this final round.
22:5730 seconds to go.
22:58Fully aware of the cut.
23:04And that cut will keep him out a little bit longer now as well.
23:07Obviously he's got a heel.
23:10But a decent six rounds for Josh Franken this has been.
23:15And a typical performance from Angel Emilov.
23:20And he's still in there, throwing leather right at the end, despite the fact he's been outclassed by the unbeaten man tonight.
23:27And there's the bell.
23:30So it's going to be a successful night for Joshua Franken in many ways.
23:34And he's going to be so disappointed by the fact he's picked up that cut right on the eyelid it would appear, Richie, at first viewing.
23:43Let's have a look where it happened.
23:44We think this is it.
23:45That clash of heads there.
23:46Yeah, that's it. There you go.
23:47And that's what can happen.
23:49What a shame that is, because up until then, this has been a good performance from him.
23:53I think it's been a good performance anyway.
23:55He's just terribly unlucky.
23:56But that's what can happen when you're in against an opponent like Emilov.
23:59And that's right on the eyelid.
24:00That's going to take a while to recover.
24:03And so that will just hinder his comeback plans really.
24:06But nevertheless, a good six rounds for him against a decent opponent who made it awkward.
24:11And who was in there who came to win and give a good account of himself.
24:15So I'd be pretty pleased with Josh Franken overall.
24:18Just very unlucky to get that cut.
24:25OK, we're all set then.
24:26Let's get the official result from MC Devsani.
24:31Ladies and gentlemen, after six rounds of boxing, your scoring referee, Mark Bates,
24:37scores the contest 59-55 to your winner,
24:42Joshua Franker!
24:47So Joshua Franker moves to 11-0.
