00:05APPLAUSE
00:31Good afternoon, good afternoon, and welcome to the Countdown studio
00:35on the very day that, way back in 1941, the great Otis Redding was born.
00:40Otis Redding, my word, great, great soul voice.
00:44His biggest hit, of course, was sitting on the dock of the bay,
00:48which was recorded.
00:50I think, first of all, it was...
00:52He was reminiscing about a time when he lived on a houseboat
00:55in Sausalito on San Francisco Bay,
00:58but the great tragedy of it all was that it was recorded
01:01just a few days, Rachel, before the poor chap and his band
01:05were killed in a plane crash over Wisconsin.
01:08Terrible. He was only 26.
01:10And yet that song, that song went on
01:13and was a number one pretty much around the world.
01:16Extraordinary. A great song about a beautiful bay.
01:20It got me, you know, me to thinking about bays.
01:23There's some lovely little bays on the North Antrim coast.
01:26Very pretty.
01:27Now, come on, you've been off on holiday.
01:30Where have you been and what did you see?
01:32And did you fancy a beach down there?
01:34Oh, absolutely. I've had a great summer.
01:36I went to the Italian Riviera.
01:38And then I went to the French Riviera.
01:40All these rivieras? Absolutely gorgeous places.
01:43Yeah, loads of beautiful bays and you just admire the yachts
01:46that are, you know, worth the size, you know, mansions.
01:49You don't even know how much money's involved,
01:51but there's some incredible, incredible boats you get to see.
01:54Admire from the beauty of the bay.
01:56And where did you go in Italy? Did you say Portofino you went to?
01:59I went around the Portofino coast, yeah.
02:01Beautiful. And France? I did prefer France, actually.
02:04Did you? Yeah, the French Riviera, Cote d'Azur. Gorgeous.
02:07Lovely. Yeah, very nice, very nice.
02:10Excellent stuff. Now, who have we got with us today?
02:12We've got Jamie Islet-Jones,
02:15who came crashing into the Countdown studio yesterday
02:19with a score of 129 first time out.
02:22It's absolutely brilliant.
02:23You're joined by Farhan Ahmed, who lives in London,
02:26works as a social media executive for an online poker website.
02:31Now, what's all this about, Farhan?
02:33Social media's massive these days,
02:35so my role really is just looking at all the different new trends,
02:40seeing if it's something that we can kind of be a part of.
02:43And it's great. I mean, I get paid to go on Facebook,
02:45whereas most bosses would probably fire you for doing the same.
02:48Sure. So then, big round of applause and good luck to you guys.
02:51Farhan, Jamie, big round of applause for our competitors today.
02:54APPLAUSE
02:58Very good. And over in the corner, of course, we have...
03:01we have Susie Dent.
03:04And for the last time, until she comes back again,
03:09which I hope will not be too long...
03:11Yes, because I haven't been on my holiday yet, Nick, unlike Rachel.
03:16Have you got something in store?
03:18I have walked that coast.
03:20She was being a bit poo-pooing round by Portofino.
03:23I've walked all that coast. It's lovely.
03:25But you couldn't walk it in those shoes, Rachel.
03:28No, I did walk around.
03:30Now then, Jamie, let's have a letters game.

13:45But now we turn to Janet.
13:48At the top of the show, we talked about Otis Redding,
13:51and I think you've got something special to talk to us about.
13:55Well, I was...
13:57Otis Redding died in 1967.
14:00He was only 26.
14:02I was kind of shocked when I read that,
14:04because in my teenage years,
14:07I went to see lots and lots of blues bands,
14:10and I saw the Rolling Stones when they first started,
14:13and Jeff Beck and the Yardbirds,
14:15and I always loved Otis Redding,
14:18and I remember going to see him live.
14:21I must have been a teenager,
14:23and I saw him at the Hammersmith Apollo,
14:25and I remember going with a big group of friends,
14:28and I remember the blokes saying,
14:30I don't know what all the fuss is about,
14:32and Otis Redding came on the stage,
14:34and every woman in the place ran to the front.
14:37There was, like, a huge rush,
14:40and those were the days when you had handbags,
14:42and all I can remember is women banging their handbags
14:45on the edge of the stage.
14:47It was so exciting,
14:49and I think I saw him before I saw the Beatles,
14:52so, yeah, it was mid-'60s.
14:55Extraordinary. What was it about him?
14:57His voice, or his looking, or his presence?
14:59Yeah, I've still got the vinyl albums
15:02of Otis Redding's singing soul ballads,
15:04and the other one, which is Otis Redding's Otis Blue.
15:08Those are the two key ones,
15:11and what was he talking about on Dock of the Bay?
15:14Well, that was never really my favourite song of Otis Redding's.
15:17I always thought Chained and Bound
15:19and That's How Strong My Love Is were the best ones.
15:22He was a fantastic singer.
15:24And, of course, as a tortured teenager,
15:26it was just perfect.
15:28There's someone even more miserable than me.
15:30No, he was a fantastic singer.
15:32Ahead of the curve, as ever.
15:34Brilliant stuff. Lovely stuff.

24:13Farhan?
24:14That means I'll go for an eight as well.
24:16Jamie?

24:32Yeah.
24:3365 to Jamie's 61.
24:35Farhan?
24:37Susie? Come.
24:39Rejoice, entertainers.
24:41Well, I was going to talk about the hot dog
24:44because there has been quite a lot of fuss recently
24:47about some new evidence as to where the hot dog comes from.
24:51And word detectives have found this great piece
24:54in the Nashville Tennessean,
24:56so a newspaper from Nashville, from November the 14th, 1886.
25:00And it's worth reading because it's a great description.
25:04It is his cries that greet you as you enter the theatre
25:07and re-greet you as you come out.
25:09He is the creature whose rolls make the night hideous
25:12and whose wares make dreams that poison sleep.
25:15It obviously didn't taste very much. Very nice.

25:39The young men who sell the article are, as a rule, not modest.
25:43But, of course, the question that everyone asks is,
25:46why hot dog in the first place? What's a dog got to do with it?
25:49And it's simple enough. It started out as a joke from the 19th century
25:52and a rumour amongst college students, particularly in the US,
25:55that the sausages were actually made of dog meat.
25:58Brilliant. Good lord.

29:23There you go. Both radios.
29:26And in the corner, Susie and Janet.
29:29Nothing exciting. Afros, that's only five.
29:32I think I've got double Fs. You're going to hate me today.
29:35I may be wrong. No, it's not. It's one Afro.
29:39Sorry, we're having a bit of a bicker.
29:41I had radios as well.
29:44Afro? Yeah, you're right.
29:46It must be at one F, as in Africa.
29:48Afro hairstyle. Exactly, I had one.
29:51Anyway, there we are.

31:11And then I did 100 plus 50.

33:49but I hope it won't be too long, because you're such a good sport.
33:52I have taken it quite well,
33:54the fact that most of my words were not allowed.
33:57But I shall take with me, Nick,
34:00the image of you with an afro.
34:02Indeed.

34:10You're terrific fun. See you tomorrow.
34:12What a shame we won't have Jamie here.
34:14It's a shame that these two great competitors came up against each other.
34:17I know, and they're both good guys, good fun.
34:19In another week, Jamie could have been OctoChamp.
