00:00Amno's Council of Ulama says Muslim-owned eateries should not be required to obtain

00:08halal certification from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department.

00:13In a Facebook post, the council's deputy president, Khairuddin Aman Razali, said Muslim-owned

00:18establishments should be excluded from the proposal as Muslims are already personally

00:23bound by Islamic rules on halal and haram.

00:27However, he agreed that halal certification could enhance confidence in the halal status

00:32of Muslim-operated establishments.

00:35On Thursday, Religious Affairs Minister Naeem Mokhtar said JAKIM was considering a proposal

00:41to make halal certification mandatory for restaurants and food companies not serving

00:46pork or alcohol.

00:48Seputih MP Theresa Kok opposed the proposal, saying it could impose significant burdens

00:53on small businesses and embarrass Malaysia on the international stage.

00:58The Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia said that Kok's claim that the rule would make

01:02Malaysia a subject of ridicule is unfounded.

01:06Its president, Nur Shahreen Hamidun, said since Malaysia is recognised as a leader in

01:11the halal industry, the mandatory halal certification of eateries that do not serve pork and alcohol

01:18would further strengthen the country's position as a global halal hub.
