00:00It's an election where the youth vote will be crucial.
00:04Young people make up more than half of Algeria's population of 45 million, and many are anxious
00:10for change.
00:13Whether it's these elections or the last ones in 2019, it's really the same thing.
00:19Nothing has changed.
00:22Promises are made during the campaign, but then we discover they're just lies.
00:28Incumbent President Abdelmajid Tabun only faces two challenges, centrist Abdelaye Hassani-Sherif
00:35and Youssef Aouchish, a former journalist running for a centre-left opposition party.
00:41Tabun was elected in 2019 amid a meagre turnout of around 40% following Hirak pro-democracy
00:47protests, a movement which has since waned.
00:50But electoral authorities this year are hoping for more people to head to the polls.
00:58The real issue will be the turnout, popular support.
01:04Will Algerians head to the polls in large numbers in this election?
01:11Although Algeria's economy has grown at an annual rate of around 4% over the past two
01:15years, it remains heavily dependent on oil and gas.
01:19Today it stands as Africa's third largest economy, but many voters say plenty of issues
01:23still need to be addressed, notably high youth unemployment in the country, where one in
01:28three young people are out of work.
