00:00:00I don't know if you can see it, but there's a lot of smoke coming out of the back of the

00:01:46No, I don't need nothing from the government.
00:01:50You're acting kind of tough for somebody done time for nothing but not paying your taxes.
00:01:55I'll bet you're going to pay them now.
00:01:59Nope.
00:02:01Farmer's still got an attitude.
00:02:03Didn't you learn anything in Leavenworth?
00:02:06Yeah.
00:02:12Get your stuff out front and get out of here.
00:02:14Sure.
00:02:43Where are you, Dad?
00:02:50I'll drive.
00:02:51Go ahead.
00:03:06So how was it in there?
00:03:09Well, I'll tell you one thing, they'll never get me back.
00:03:16What's new at home?
00:03:18More people are losing their farms.
00:03:21Good.
00:03:23Maybe now they'll listen.
00:03:28Mom had Uncle Bob pay the tax lien on the farm.
00:03:38She shouldn't have done that.
00:03:40You know?
00:03:43She shouldn't have done that.
00:03:52Hi, Daddy.
00:04:22I want you out of here tomorrow morning.
00:04:33The government was going to take it.
00:04:35It's worth more than we owed.
00:04:37Where do you expect me to go?
00:04:40I don't care where you go.
00:04:44Why don't you go to your brother Bob's place?
00:04:55Daddy, are you crazy?
00:04:56She had to go to Uncle Bob for help.
00:04:57The IRS would have taken the farm.
00:05:00You just keep your mouth shut.
00:05:02I'm not going to stand by here while you throw my mother out of our home.
00:05:07You go too.
00:05:21Daddy, are you okay?
00:05:28I want to thank you, how you took care of the guns.
00:05:36You know I wouldn't let you down, Dad.
00:05:40No.
00:05:44I want to thank you, how you took care of the guns.
00:05:51You know I wouldn't let you down, Dad.
00:05:54I want to thank you, how you took care of the guns.
00:05:57You know I wouldn't let you down, Dad.
00:06:00I want to thank you, how you took care of the guns.
00:06:03You know I wouldn't let you down, Dad.
00:06:06I want to thank you, how you took care of the guns.
00:06:11You know I wouldn't let you down, Dad.
00:06:13I want to thank you, how you took care of the guns.
00:06:16You know I wouldn't let you down, Dad.
00:06:19This is the fifth farm sale I've been to in a month.
00:06:22And you know why?
00:06:25Because of the bankers and the federal loan agency, you see.
00:06:30They're in this thing together.
00:06:32They foreclosed on thousands of farms across the United States.
00:06:36What good will it do them unless they know more about farming than we do?
00:06:40No, you don't understand.
00:06:42Just think, once they control the land, they can control the food supply.
00:06:47And once they control the food supply, they can control the world.
00:06:51But it's our government, Gordon. They're our representatives.
00:06:55Yeah, you're right. It's right. It's our government.
00:06:58Our government. Our government that lowers the crop prices.
00:07:01That's our government. It's our governments that raise the taxes.
00:07:04That's our government, and it's our government that took the farm away.
00:07:08Well, now, that's damn sure true.
00:07:11How do you figure on fighting the government?
00:07:14You just don't pay taxes, you understand?
00:07:17That's what I did. I didn't pay taxes, and I went to jail for it, you understand?
00:07:22And I will never pay taxes.
00:07:28Okay, that's enough of that.
00:07:30Now, we got some stuff here I want you guys to look at this material.
00:07:33We got a group. It's called the Pase Comitados.
00:07:36That meets every Sunday afternoon, and we kind of discuss these problems.
00:07:41Only our group is a little different, because I think in my heart, we have solutions.
00:07:56Okay. Excuse me, gentlemen.
00:08:04What do you want?
00:08:06I want to come home.
00:08:09It's been too long.
00:08:14Well, are you ready to repent?
00:08:16Are you ready to conform to the laws of God and His commandments?
00:08:22I just want to be around the children.
00:08:25Please.
00:08:28Let me come home.
00:08:37Okay.
00:08:57Okay.
00:08:59Okay.
00:09:25Can you hear me?
00:09:28Agent Maverly.
00:09:30Yes, sir.
00:09:32I'm Ken Muir, federal marshal here.
00:09:34Pleasure.
00:09:35Good to meet you.
00:09:37Gentlemen, this is Agent Richard Maverly from the FBI office in Chicago.
00:09:42You already know Roger Simms.
00:09:44Good to see you again, Rog.
00:09:45That's Carl Greenwood, deputy marshal here in Fargo.
00:09:49This is Jim Hobson, Bob Chester from our Bismarck office.
00:09:52Pleasure.
00:09:53Sir.
00:09:54Can I get you a cup of coffee or anything?
00:09:56Yeah, I think I will.
00:09:58Drink it at your own risk.
00:09:59These guys make it thick enough to float a horseshoe.
00:10:02We're just trying to keep you on your toes, Bob.
00:10:05Gentlemen, the continuing saga of Gordon Kahl.
00:10:10God has chosen a white man to be supreme.
00:10:12That's my own personal choice.
00:10:14I didn't pay taxes for about five years.
00:10:18This is from a television show he was on in Texas.
00:10:22That just shows you that paying taxes doesn't mean anything.
00:10:27I think any intelligent, superior-minded, white human being, Christian,
00:10:32knows that paying taxes is like giving gifts to the synagogue of Satan.
00:10:41I mean, for me, I feel like...
00:10:43He's already done a year in Leavenworth and he's still preaching tax protests.
00:10:47Ladies and gentlemen, we also have him on probation violation.
00:10:51Wait a minute.
00:10:52You dragged me out to the boondocks for a probation violation on a tax charge?
00:10:56There's more to it than that.
00:10:58He is also a white supremacist.
00:11:00He is stockpiling guns.
00:11:03He also says he's going to kill anybody who tries to arrest him.
00:11:07Sounds like some kind of crackpot.
00:11:08He is a crackpot and he's damn dangerous.
00:11:11I think the only way to settle this thing without bloodshed is to try to negotiate with him.
00:11:16Well, I don't agree with that.
00:11:17Has anybody tried to serve a warrant?
00:11:19Several times, but he's not an easy man to corner.
00:11:22I've been working down there with a local deputy, Leland Winters,
00:11:25but somebody always warns him off.
00:11:28Well, the posse comatose has done a good job of keeping him away from us.
00:11:31His prison profile says he's a religious fanatic with schizophrenic characteristics.
00:11:36He's also a crack shot with a high-powered rifle.
00:11:41Then we proceed with care, gentlemen.
00:11:45But we proceed.
00:11:50Posse comatose is in 23 states, 78 separate chapters.
00:11:56How big is it out here?
00:11:58It's growing.
00:12:00We've also got KKK right-wing survivalist neo-Nazis.
00:12:04I know the type.
00:12:05Little men with big ideas.
00:12:08Guys like them are all cut from the same cloth.
00:12:10They all preach hate and they all got guns.
00:12:13Well, you know, it's been hard times for the farmers out here.
00:12:16The whole world's hard.
00:12:18Everybody wants to blame their problems on somebody else
00:12:21instead of taking responsibility for themselves.
00:12:24Look, I'm not condoning their actions.
00:12:26I'm just telling you the root of the problem.
00:12:28These farmers ought to make up their minds.
00:12:32They complain about big government, but they still want their price supports.
00:12:37My parents came to this country to make a better life for themselves and their kids.
00:12:41They didn't blame their problems on anyone.
00:12:49There's a shop right here looking possible.
00:12:52Scott, you want to be at the posse meeting in Medina?
00:12:56Yeah, Gordon, I thought I would.
00:12:59I'll see you there.
00:13:00Yes, sir.
00:13:01Would it be all right if I come along?
00:13:03I'd like to see Ellen and visit a while.
00:13:18All right.
00:13:20Come on.
00:13:47Hello?
00:13:48Bob, Leland Winters.
00:13:50Gordon Call is here.
00:13:52He's in town for a posse meeting.
00:13:54He's down at Dog Hardens Clinic out on the edge of town.
00:13:57Just started.
00:13:58Should be here two or three hours.
00:14:01I'll get a hold of Ken Muir and Fargo.
00:14:03You stake them out until we get there.
00:14:05Got you.
00:14:10Hello, Ken Muir.
00:14:13Hi, Bob.
00:14:15Okay.
00:14:18That's good.
00:14:19Remember what they said last year?
00:14:23Hello?
00:14:24It's Ken Muir.
00:14:25Yeah, Ken.
00:14:26Hi, Roger.
00:14:27Listen, one of our deputies down in Medina
00:14:29has got a line on Gordon Call.
00:14:31And since you've been head-to-head with him,
00:14:33I thought maybe you'd like to come along for the ride.
00:14:35Nope.
00:14:36And I gotta tell you again,
00:14:37I don't think this is the way to go after him.
00:14:39Call Maberly?
00:14:41No, he's been called back to Chicago for the weekend.
00:14:43Listen, Call's not gonna wait for us.
00:14:44We gotta move fast on this.
00:14:47Okay.
00:14:48Good luck.
00:14:50Thanks.
00:14:55Sorry to disturb you, Chief Douglas.
00:14:57Can I borrow a two-way radio?
00:14:59Sure, Leland.
00:15:00Come on in.
00:15:01I was gonna go to my office,
00:15:02but you were closer,
00:15:03and I need this thing for a stakeout.
00:15:06Oh, what stakeout?
00:15:07I didn't hear anything about a stakeout.
00:15:09It's federal.
00:15:10It's U.S. Marshals out of Bismarck in Fargo
00:15:13coming to arrest Gordon Call.
00:15:15They want me to keep an eye on them before they get here.
00:15:17They're crazy.
00:15:18They try and take Call in there for a world of hurt.
00:15:21Call them back.
00:15:22Tell them not to come.
00:15:24They're not gonna drop it.
00:15:28Can I borrow that radio?
00:15:31Okay.
00:15:32Just a minute.
00:15:34Here you go.
00:15:38Here we are.
00:15:39Oh!
00:15:40Oh, beautiful.
00:15:48Thanks.
00:15:49You wanna ride with me?
00:15:51I don't wanna get mixed up in this.
00:15:54I don't think I could shoot somebody I know
00:15:56if it came down to it.
00:15:58Okay.
00:15:59We'll take care of it.
00:16:01Thanks a lot.
00:16:03Sooner or later,
00:16:05outsiders will threaten our way of life.
00:16:07That is why we must agree to our new charter.
00:16:10Yeah, well, I'm not gonna agree on a charter like that.
00:16:12No way.
00:16:13Gordon, your racist views
00:16:16run counter to the religious nature of this organization.
00:16:21Maybe you, uh...
00:16:23Maybe you should just get out of the posse, Doc.
00:16:26Look, Gordon.
00:16:29The posse may mean racism to you.
00:16:32It doesn't to me.
00:16:33As far as I'm concerned, we're here to help our neighbors,
00:16:36not make them fear us.
00:16:39If the posse ever stops standing for local justice,
00:16:42that'll be the day
00:16:44that this organization and I part company.
00:16:47Now, can we get on with it?
00:16:49Sure.
00:16:51Sure, Doc.
00:16:52You, uh...
00:16:54You get on with it.
00:17:02Okay.
00:17:21Leland, we're in position here.
00:17:23Ken Muir is on his way down from Fargo.
00:17:26Sit tight.
00:17:28Got you.
00:17:32Let's go.
00:17:51It has been moved and seconded.
00:17:53Doc?
00:17:54Sorry for interrupting, Doc, but we're being watched.
00:17:58We better get a look.
00:18:02You better give our friend a call right away.
00:18:27He said it's a federal operation, the Marshals.
00:18:30It's just Leland Winters, local deputy.
00:18:32He's always watching things.
00:18:34You want me to go up there and see what he's up to?
00:18:36No, I know what he's up to.
00:18:40Give me the gun.
00:18:49Yeah.
00:18:50What is it? What's going on?
00:18:52Nothing's going on.
00:18:54Bob, they're on the move.
00:18:55My guess is they're headed back toward Eaton.
00:18:57I'm gonna come to you.
00:19:01Come on, Gordon. You can ride with me.
00:19:03She's gotten out. I'll ride with Yuri.
00:19:30Here we come.
00:20:00Bob, this is Ken Muir.
00:20:01We're right behind the subjects and we see you at the bottom of the hill.
00:20:05There they are, Gordon. They've got a roadblock.
00:20:09This is where it's gonna be.
00:20:12So be it.
00:20:30Let's go.
00:20:49Earl?
00:20:50Earl, there's police lights out on the road.
00:20:54Tar Nation? Hello?
00:20:57Dana, get away from the window.
00:20:59Kids, come on. Let's go.
00:21:08Give me my gun.
00:21:09No, Yuri. It's not you they want.
00:21:11They want Dad. I gotta help.
00:21:12No, Yuri!
00:21:13Get out!
00:21:14U.S. Marshals, put down your weapons.
00:21:19Go ahead.
00:21:27Not like I'm going to miss.
00:21:29You better back off.
00:21:32Put down your weapons.
00:21:35Look, there's no need for anybody to be killed over anything like this.
00:21:57Ken, we need more units.
00:22:00We don't have more units.
00:22:02What do you want?
00:22:03I want him. Gordon, call.
00:22:06I thought I told you.
00:22:09You better back off.
00:22:12Damn it, Ken. We're face to face with these guys.
00:22:14We're in deep here. Move up.
00:22:16Coming down.
00:22:27Yuri!
00:22:33He's breaking for the trees. Go.
00:22:57Put your weapons down, and we'll talk about this.
00:23:01This isn't worth a life, Cole.
00:23:27Get down!
00:23:35Get out of the head!
00:23:37Go!
00:23:55Officer down!
00:24:01Let's go, guys. I'm hit bad.
00:24:04Move in!
00:24:07Move in!
00:24:16Officer down!
00:24:18Let's go, guys. I'm hit bad.
00:24:37Let's go.
00:25:07Let's go.
00:25:37Come on.
00:26:07Oh, God.
00:26:09Oh, it burns.
00:26:17Oh, God.
00:26:18Oh, my God.
00:26:29Get down.
00:26:31Kill those bastards!
00:26:32Come on, take it easy.
00:26:38Please, Cole.
00:26:43Gordon!
00:26:49Gordon!
00:26:51Oh, baby. You're going to be all right.
00:26:54All right, get him in the car.
00:26:56Come on, get him in the car.
00:26:59Let's go. You're going to be all right.
00:27:01Get him in the car.
00:27:02Wilbur!
00:27:03You okay?
00:27:05Get out of the way.
00:27:06Yeah, I'm all right.
00:27:11All right, go, go, go, go, go.
00:27:13Go, go, go.
00:27:35Just get down there and help the others.
00:27:43Oh, God.
00:27:45Get me water and sponges.
00:27:46There's lots of them.
00:27:48He's going to die. He's going to die.
00:27:52Doug, is he going to die?
00:27:53I'm doing what I can.
00:27:54You have to leave, Joan.
00:27:56Let me work.
00:27:58Joan, come on.
00:28:01Who's afraid this is going to happen?
00:28:04I want to work.
00:28:14Watch your back.
00:28:18Keep it in line now.
00:28:19Okay.
00:28:24Well, Scott?
00:28:44We got to get them both to the hospital.
00:28:46And Jamestown.
00:29:00We could have talked this out instead of shooting.
00:29:04Well, it's a little late for that.
00:29:06Leland, what are you doing out there with the federal marshals?
00:29:10Did you forget you were raised in the military?
00:29:13I was raised in this town.
00:29:15You've gone too far.
00:29:17You're killing people?
00:29:19I could have killed you.
00:29:21I know that.
00:29:23Get that gun out of here.
00:29:25It's a heck of a thing to do, Gordon,
00:29:27to shoot at people over a little income tax.
00:29:31It's a little more than taxes.
00:29:33Is it worth getting your son shot?
00:29:40To me, it was.
00:29:43Okay.
00:30:14Agent Maverly!
00:30:15Right!
00:30:16I'm Dan Cripps with the U.S. Attorney's Office here in North Dakota.
00:30:21I go away, all hell breaks loose!
00:30:23We have two officers, Fuhrer and Kesher, dead.
00:30:26Three of them are wounded.
00:30:28We got one perpetrator, Uri Paul.
00:30:31He took a shotgun blast to the chest.
00:30:33They're working on him.
00:30:44Here, baby.
00:30:49You all right?
00:30:51Yeah.
00:30:54It was Gordon Call.
00:30:55Son, Uri.
00:30:57Scott Fall.
00:30:58Wilbur Lundy.
00:30:59Guy named Lester Tompkins.
00:31:01All members of the posse.
00:31:03Call did the most damage to Uri.
00:31:06He shot Bob Kesher point blank.
00:31:09He executed him.
00:31:14You're sure it was Call?
00:31:16Hell yeah.
00:31:17I talked to him at the clinic after.
00:31:19What?
00:31:21The ambulance took us all to Doc Ernst's clinic in Medina, and there he was.
00:31:26All of you were there?
00:31:28That's the closest doctor.
00:31:30Uri was there, and I guess Call came to see how he was.
00:31:34What is it with this place?
00:31:36You guys shoot the hell out of each other, then get together later for a beer?
00:31:40Why didn't you take him right there?
00:31:43He was armed.
00:31:45Mister, he killed Bob Kesher.
00:31:48Don't you think I would have gone for him if I could have?
00:31:52Where'd he go?
00:31:54Out the door.
00:31:57Out the door?
00:31:58We got warrants. We're already moving on Lundy and Tompkins.
00:32:14Get in the house.
00:32:22Federal Marshal, open up!
00:32:26Get this door open!
00:32:28No!
00:32:29No!
00:32:33What are you doing?
00:32:35Let him go!
00:32:37Back in the house!
00:32:38He didn't do anything!
00:32:39Get him in the car.
00:32:41He's right there.
00:32:43Where are you taking him? Bring him back!
00:32:45Prisoner walk in!
00:32:57No!
00:32:58Please, don't kill him!
00:33:00Oh, no, please!
00:33:03Stop your squalling, Lester. You sound like a stuffed pig.
00:33:07Shut up, will you? Shut up!
00:33:13Shut up!
00:33:29What are we going to do?
00:33:31I think what we'll do is go to my place. It's about a half mile down the road.
00:33:35It's true.
00:33:36Mrs. Gordon Call?
00:33:37Yes.
00:33:38I'm Agent Richard Maberly, Federal Bureau of Investigation. Do you know where your husband is now?
00:33:43No, I don't.
00:33:45You're going to have to come with us, Mrs. Call.
00:33:46I can't. My son's been hurt. I have to stay here with him.
00:33:50Lady, you're under arrest for murder.
00:33:54I want every officer I can get by dawn.
00:33:57I'm sorry.
00:33:59I'm sorry.
00:34:01I want every officer I can get by dawn.
00:34:04We underestimated this guy once. We're not going to do it again.
00:34:31At his car?
00:34:33One of them.
00:35:01We're in position, sir.
00:35:04Gordon Call.
00:35:06This is the FBI. Come out with your hands over your head.
00:35:14That damn dog.
00:35:18Call!
00:35:21Call!
00:35:23Call!
00:35:25Call!
00:35:27Call!
00:35:28Call!
00:35:43Gordon Call.
00:35:45This is the FBI. You're under arrest.
00:35:53Dammit, who fired?
00:35:56Hold your fire!
00:35:58Hold your fire!
00:36:01Okay, get some tear gas in there.
00:36:25Send in the assaulter.
00:36:26Alright, squad!
00:36:28Let's go!
00:36:29Let's move up!
00:36:30Let's go!
00:36:31Let's go! Let's go!
00:36:56Let's go!
00:37:27We're going down here.
00:37:30Alright, we're going to load it up and get out of here.
00:37:34Somebody give me a hand, please.
00:37:35Call's not in there.
00:37:37There's a stockpile of weapons and a bunch of these plastic comatose pamphlets.
00:37:57Call got away?
00:37:58Yeah, he did.
00:38:00He wasn't there.
00:38:02Alright, let's talk, gentlemen.
00:38:05Gordon Call, where is he?
00:38:08What are you asking us for?
00:38:13We don't know nothing.
00:38:16Drop dead.
00:38:18I want a lawyer.
00:38:20Drop dead.
00:38:22I want a lawyer.
00:38:33I gotta go back.
00:38:35My family's there.
00:38:37My wife, my kids.
00:38:40It's my whole life.
00:38:44Well, you go back and they ain't gonna never leave you alone.
00:38:47I got no place else to go.
00:38:53We killed them, Gordon.
00:38:57They were like us.
00:39:01It doesn't make any sense.
00:39:02They were Federals, but they were like us.
00:39:07You wanna go back, you go back.
00:39:10But let's not go around whining.
00:39:11Let's not go around whimpering.
00:39:17Sooner or later, you're gonna have to learn to stand up to them.
00:39:21I don't know what to do.
00:39:27You know, World War II, I was a tail gunner on a B-25 bomber.
00:39:34And we were coming back from a mission when all of a sudden,
00:39:43our own planes, they came down on us.
00:39:46Now they, they must have thought that we were the enemies.
00:39:53And they started shooting.
00:39:57So I shot them down.
00:40:01You killed them?
00:40:12But that's because it was self-defense.
00:40:17And that's what this is, this is self-defense, you see.
00:40:25And that's what, that's what this note tells them.
00:40:31Self-defense.
00:40:46Self-defense.
00:41:09James Wickstrom, director of counterinsurgency for the Posse Comitatus
00:41:13and a former U.S. Senate candidate,
00:41:15told his followers the shootout between Gordon Call and federal marshals
00:41:19indicates the government has declared war on the people of this country.
00:41:23Wickstrom's firebrand speech in Bismarck today
00:41:26included a threat to Deputy Sheriff Leland Winters,
00:41:29who was wounded in the shootout.
00:41:31We hold Deputy Winters directly responsible for this.
00:41:34He's a local officer and should not be working with the federal marshals.
00:41:38He knows he can be punished at any time by the Posse Comitatus.
00:41:41Local police chief Larry Douglas
00:41:43criticized the federal marshals' attempt to arrest Call.
00:41:47I know Gordon Call.
00:41:48He's always been a God-fearing man and a good neighbor.
00:41:51And what do those federal lawmen do? They shoot his dog.
00:41:54Deputy U.S. attorney Dan Krebs,
00:41:56who will be prosecuting those involved in the shootout,
00:41:59responded to Douglas' criticism.
00:42:02The marshals tried to arrest Call because he broke the law.
00:42:04It was their duty. That's the kind of men they are.
00:42:08I don't get it.
00:42:09I don't get it.
00:42:10Call guns down two marshals,
00:42:12walks up to one and shoots him point-blank in the head while he's wounded,
00:42:16and the people here turn against us because somebody shoots a dog.
00:42:20Shooting that dog was stupid.
00:42:23But you've got to understand what you're dealing with here.
00:42:25These people are in a crisis,
00:42:27as deep as the Great Depression.
00:42:29They asked Washington for help,
00:42:31and all they get is the suggestion they give up their farm
00:42:34that they've had for generations.
00:42:36There's not much I can do about that.
00:42:40Don't hold it against these people that they're vulnerable.
00:42:44These people are going under.
00:42:46Why don't we try our reward?
00:42:47Maybe even one of his posse buddies will turn him in.
00:42:50We'll try it.
00:42:52The public's getting the perception that a grandfather in bib overalls
00:42:56outsmarting the best law enforcement officers in the country.
00:43:01Until we find him, they're right.
00:43:04Great.
00:43:05Thank you.
00:43:06Come on, Wenders, let's you and I wrap this thing up.
00:43:18Are you Scott Faulk?
00:43:20I don't want to turn myself in, but it was self-defense.
00:43:23There was nothing we could do about it. They came at us.
00:43:25You're under arrest.
00:43:26He'll have to come back.
00:43:27You're under arrest.
00:43:28You're under arrest.
00:43:29You're under arrest.
00:43:30You're under arrest.
00:43:31They came at us.
00:43:32You're under arrest.
00:43:33He'll have to come with us.
00:43:34I've got a note.
00:43:35Warden Cole gave me a note.
00:43:37My wife has got it.
00:43:38She has it.
00:43:39Shawna?
00:43:42People were killed out there, but nobody was murdered.
00:43:45This was self-defense.
00:43:47Go on home, ma'am.
00:43:49It was self-defense, Leland.
00:43:51Don't give us that self-defense crap.
00:43:53You gunned them down.
00:43:55I already told you.
00:43:56They came after us.
00:43:57That was their job.
00:44:00Cole was wanted on a federal warrant.
00:44:03We don't recognize the federal government.
00:44:18You're married, aren't you?
00:44:19Yes, sir.
00:44:20Got a bunch of kids?
00:44:22Yes, sir.
00:44:23You work, you farm, you make a living at it.
00:44:25Yes.
00:44:26You're not a farmer anymore. You're a killer.
00:44:30You're going to prison and never see those kids again.
00:44:40You're not going to get anywhere that way.
00:44:43Why?
00:44:44People around here, they look at you and they see big government.
00:44:48They don't think what happens in their lives matters to you.
00:44:52I've been an FBI agent nearly 20 years now.
00:44:55You know what that means?
00:44:56That means I'm the guy who gets called in when the local law won't do what has to be done.
00:45:01I'm not here to run for office. I'm here to find a killer.
00:45:05Well, if you'll slow down a little, people will be more inclined to help.
00:45:11How do you figure that threat the posse put on you?
00:45:15Well, they just want to remind me that I am local.
00:45:19And I ought to be listening to them instead of the feds.
00:45:22So, are you listening?
00:45:24That's a funny thing.
00:45:26They shot my finger off, I became hard of hearing.
00:45:32Come on, I'll buy you a cup of coffee.
00:45:34Sure, okay.
00:45:54Hi.
00:45:56Do me a favor, would you tell your father that Sam Evans is here, alright?
00:46:02Emma, up on the porch. I'll take care of it.
00:46:10I need a place to stay.
00:46:12Sure. Come on in. We've always got room for a Christian patriot.
00:46:24Are you telling me you didn't agree with your husband?
00:46:28Gordon just went crazy over this tax thing.
00:46:31Why was that?
00:46:33I don't know.
00:46:36He'd sit up till three o'clock reading pamphlets and books.
00:46:41He just got on a track against paying taxes and he couldn't get off it.
00:46:46We almost lost the farm to the IRS for back taxes.
00:46:49What happened?
00:46:51I had my brother pay off the lien.
00:46:55Gordon went even crazier, threw me out of the house.
00:47:01I had to beg him to take me back.
00:47:05Why did you do that?
00:47:07I love Gordon.
00:47:10And I didn't want to lose you or him either.
00:47:14I don't know.
00:47:15And I didn't want to lose you or him either.
00:47:20I'm freezing.
00:47:23Oh. Here. Help yourself.
00:47:33Yuri always idolized Gordon.
00:47:38It was Gordon who taught Yuri to hate.
00:47:42What does a little boy know about those things?
00:47:45Nothing.
00:47:50When did your husband get involved with the posse?
00:47:53It was later. Gordon believed these things before the posse came along.
00:47:57When it did, he just fit right in.
00:48:00After that, it was hopeless.
00:48:03He thought there'd be trouble.
00:48:08I just didn't want them to get Yuri.
00:48:16Mrs. Call, maybe we can help each other.
00:48:27Mrs. Call would like to make a statement.
00:48:30She will take no questions, but I will afterward if you wish.
00:48:33Mrs. Call?
00:48:38I would like to appeal to my husband, Gordon Call.
00:48:41Gordon, please turn yourself in.
00:48:46Our son is hurt, two men are dead, and others are going to be if you continue this.
00:48:50I don't want you dead, too.
00:48:53Please, Gordon, they won't hurt you if you come peacefully.
00:48:56Please, Gordon. I love you.
00:49:12Mr. Starkey, I'm Richard Maberly, and this is Leland Winters.
00:49:18I'm sorry to disturb you, sir, but there have been reports that this man was here recently.
00:49:33I'm sure you've seen his picture in the paper.
00:49:36His name is Richard Maberly.
00:49:38I'm sure you've seen his picture in the paper.
00:49:41His name is Gordon Call. He murdered two federal marshals in Medina.
00:49:45Mister, I wouldn't tell you where he is even if I knew.
00:49:53All right, sir. Thank you for your time.
00:50:02These people wouldn't tell you if your foot was on fire.
00:50:04It's the reward offer. We're getting tips from all over.
00:50:08Kansas, Virginia, Wisconsin.
00:50:11We even have a woman up in Billings, Montana, who says she's personally seen Call.
00:50:15Okay, let's put teams on each one of these.
00:50:17I want to use all resources to track each lead as fast as possible.
00:50:21Is there a Gordon Call here?
00:50:24His tax accountant wants to talk to him.
00:50:34Sure did. I saw him with my own two eyes.
00:50:38When was this?
00:50:40Last Thursday morning, about 6.45. He had eggs, toast and milk.
00:50:47How do you know it was Gordon Call?
00:50:50I seen his picture on TV that night and in the papers the next morning.
00:50:55It was a darndest coincidence. I told my niece right away and she said I should call the FBI.
00:51:01And you're sure it was the same man?
00:51:04Could be. I served him on that corner stool. The one right there. He was sitting right next to Elvis.
00:51:09Elvis?
00:51:11Elvis Presley. He was drinking a malt.
00:51:17That's great.
00:51:35Right leg.
00:51:42Looks like we've got company, fellas.
00:51:46Look alive.
00:51:50One more. One more.
00:51:52What do I do with these here?
00:51:54Go ahead and stow that.
00:52:13What are you doing here?
00:52:15Are you Ben Hastings?
00:52:17I am.
00:52:18You own this farm?
00:52:20I do.
00:52:21FBI, we have a warrant to search this place. We've been informed that Gordon Call is hiding here.
00:52:26He's not here, but I'd be proud to have him. He is a great man.
00:52:32What are you running here?
00:52:34Nothing. We just like to get together once a month for a bivouac.
00:52:38Search him!
00:52:41Excuse me, Hastings.
00:52:43If you ask me, that shootout up there, Medina, was just a planned assassination attempt by the government.
00:52:48They shut Gordon up because of his beliefs.
00:52:51I'm not asking you.
00:52:53Excuse me.
00:52:55Okay, sit down.
00:52:57Okay, I want the base. We're going to hold off on target presence. Please stand down the way.
00:53:02You want this base, that's copy.
00:53:04Ben says to incorporate her if you can.
00:53:06Ben says to incorporate her if you can. Over.
00:53:10You want the base, huh? We've got two teams doing a recon exercise in the woods.
00:53:15I'm going to send a squad up to tell them what's going on. Over.
00:53:20That's a good idea, Juan. Be sure to call in before you leave the perimeter.
00:53:26This is Unit One-Niner. Do you need assistance at base? Over.
00:53:31Thank you, Feed and Army. They got everything here.
00:53:34Everything except Call.
00:53:36Over.
00:54:06Over.
00:54:36And there it is, folks, calling Gordon Call by special request for all you listeners here in Studsman County.
00:54:43Can you believe it?
00:54:45To tell you the truth, I never could abide Gordon's hatred of blacks and Jews.
00:54:50As far as I can see, people are people.
00:54:52But you're in the posse comitatus with him.
00:54:55That doesn't mean we see things eye to eye.
00:54:58The posse comitatus, in its purest sense, doesn't recognize authority above the county level.
00:55:04And I believe that.
00:55:06I'm in the posse because I believe we have to be self-reliant at the local level.
00:55:11Because no pack of bureaucrats in Washington is going to do anything more than talk us to death.
00:55:18I work for Washington. You don't have to tell me about bureaucracy.
00:55:23Well, maybe you ought to get out of government work and get yourself a real job.
00:55:28Meeting took place at your clinic?
00:55:31That's right.
00:55:32What happened before everybody left?
00:55:35Fall saw Winters out on the road.
00:55:38I was going to ask Winters what he was up to, but Colin said he already knew.
00:55:44Wait a minute.
00:55:46Call knew?
00:55:48That's what he said.
00:55:49Do you have any idea where Call went?
00:55:53I can't help you there.
00:55:56I will tell you this. Call is probably in the posse's underground.
00:56:01Maybe you can smoke him out, but he has a lot of help.
00:56:07The posse knows every move you make.
00:56:10How's that?
00:56:13I don't know.
00:56:14The posse knows every move you make.
00:56:17How's that?
00:56:19Posse comitatus is everywhere.
00:56:28Winters?
00:56:30Where?
00:56:32I'll be right there. About ten minutes.
00:56:45Margaret, this is Leland. I'll be headed south on a route of ten by the interstate.
00:56:50If Maverly calls, tell him to meet me out there.
00:57:14Shit!
00:57:44Shit!
00:58:14Shit!
00:58:35I'm okay.
00:58:41I was just on my way to pick you up. What the hell happened?
00:58:45Guess I had a blowout.
00:59:09I used to go hunting out here.
00:59:12Never gonna be the same now.
00:59:17You ever go hunting?
00:59:18No, I was a city kid.
00:59:20I like it. Being outdoors, walking the fields, taking your time.
00:59:27You ought to try it sometime.
00:59:32That's where he killed Bob Tischer.
00:59:38Muir got it up there.
00:59:41I ran up the hill to the ambulance.
00:59:47What you doing out here, Winters?
00:59:50Hi, Earl.
00:59:52This is Agent Maverly, the FBI, and we just came out to have a look around.
00:59:58FBI?
01:00:00I'd like to ask you some questions, Mr. Mackey.
01:00:05We didn't have nothing to do with this.
01:00:07Come on, Earl. We know that.
01:00:11Okay.
01:00:13Come over to the house. We'll get some supper.
01:00:25Muir don't want to be any trouble.
01:00:27It's no trouble. It's nothing fancy, but you're welcome to it.
01:00:34Go ahead and sit down, Mr. Mackey.
01:00:42You know what really teed me off?
01:00:45Is that no one told us what was happening until it was too late.
01:00:49It just started going too fast.
01:00:52Yeah, but they put us in danger.
01:00:55The walls of this trailer ain't thick enough to stop a bullet.
01:00:59Kids were just sitting down to supper. I was holding the baby.
01:01:03They didn't call us till it was happening right outside.
01:01:08You could have warned us, Leland.
01:01:09I didn't know it was going down right here.
01:01:13Those marshals ran the show. I was just along for the ride.
01:01:18Yeah, well, no one from the government ever apologized either.
01:01:23If it's any consolation,
01:01:26I'm from the government, and I'm sorry you were put in danger.
01:01:40Have a biscuit, Mr. Maberly?
01:01:43Thank you.
01:01:50I'm sorry those men were killed.
01:02:00Tell me something. Did you call the ambulance that came that day?
01:02:04No. There was no time.
01:02:06We were busy getting out of the way.
01:02:09When did the ambulance arrive?
01:02:12Right after the shooting stopped.
01:02:22Smacky?
01:02:24It's great.
01:02:31Who do you think tipped Cobb?
01:02:34Who do you think tipped Cobb?
01:02:39You think I did it?
01:02:41No.
01:02:43Did anybody else know what was going down?
01:02:46Larry knew. Chief Douglas.
01:02:49How did he know?
01:02:51I told him. I had to go by his house to get a radio for the stakeout.
01:02:55He didn't want to have anything to do with it.
01:02:57Really? How did the ambulance get there?
01:03:00I suppose Larry ordered it. He was with it when I came over the hill.
01:03:05Why did he do that?
01:03:07I don't know. I was just glad it was there when it was.
01:03:11Is Douglas in the posse?
01:03:16Maybe.
01:03:20I never thought about it.
01:03:25You want me to go in and get him?
01:03:27Yeah. Ask him to come out here a minute.
01:03:55What do you want?
01:03:58I want to know your connection to the posse Comitatus.
01:04:02I don't have any connection to the posse.
01:04:05How did you know to take the ambulance out to that shootout with Cobb?
01:04:09Are you accusing me of something?
01:04:12No, sir.
01:04:14Then you get the hell out of my face.
01:04:17Because I got nothing to say to you. Nothing.
01:04:27Come on.
01:04:57Fill her up one more time while I hit the can.
01:05:00You talking to me?
01:05:02Yeah. Fill her up.
01:05:09I'm sorry, sir.
01:05:11I'm sorry.
01:05:13I'm sorry.
01:05:15I'm sorry.
01:05:17I'm sorry.
01:05:19I'm sorry.
01:05:21I'm sorry.
01:05:23I'm sorry.
01:05:25I'm sorry.
01:05:28I'm sorry.
01:05:41Okay. Okay.
01:05:44Just stop washing right now.
01:05:46What is this?
01:05:48Never mind what it is.
01:05:50Now you get down.
01:05:52Come on. Now get down on your knees.
01:05:54Down, down. That's it. Good.
01:05:58Don't shoot.
01:06:01I wouldn't hurt you.
01:06:05I wouldn't hurt you for the world.
01:06:13That's for the time I spent in Leavenworth.
01:06:18Bro.
01:06:28Come on.
01:06:49Ben! Come out here!
01:06:58Come on.
01:07:09How you doing, Gordon?
01:07:11Well, I'm a little tired and I'm cold and I've been running around just a little bit.
01:07:25You want a place to stay?
01:07:28I appreciate it.
01:07:30We'll have to find you someplace else.
01:07:33FBI was here.
01:07:35They know we're friends.
01:07:37Oh, no, I...
01:07:38No, no.
01:07:40I got a friend they know nothing about.
01:07:44We can always find a safe place for you here in Arkansas.
01:07:48Thank you. Thank you very much.
01:07:57You're welcome.
01:08:18You girls run in the house. Come on, run. Quick.
01:08:25How's my girls?
01:08:28Hi, Dad.
01:08:30Karen, you know Ben Hastings, and this is Sam Evans.
01:08:33Hi.
01:08:35Sam's going to be staying with us for a while. We were just going out to visit some friends.
01:08:40Okay, you better get in the house before you get wet.
01:08:45Karen, I want you to promise me something.
01:08:48Don't mention to anyone that Sam be in here.
01:08:51Why? Who is he?
01:08:53He's just a friend of Ben's.
01:08:54Okay.
01:08:56Thank you.
01:09:12Come on in.
01:09:21Hello.
01:09:23Well, I... I may have some good news.
01:09:27Lester Tompkins has plea bargained.
01:09:30He's agreed to cooperate with the investigation and testify against the others.
01:09:36I offered the same deal to Lundy.
01:09:38He told me to take a hike.
01:09:40He wants some posse comitatus lawyer to defend him so he can trash the IRS.
01:09:46I'm going to pan fry his ass.
01:09:48When can I talk to Tompkins?
01:09:50Anytime.
01:09:51Okay.
01:10:00How did Carl know the marshals were coming after him?
01:10:05Leland Winters.
01:10:08He was out on the road watching us.
01:10:10Winters is not a marshal. He's local.
01:10:12Gordon knew Winters was with him.
01:10:15How could he have known that?
01:10:18Lundy told him.
01:10:20Lundy made a phone call and found out.
01:10:22Who'd he call?
01:10:25I don't know.
01:10:27Could have been Larry. He wasn't at the meeting.
01:10:30Larry?
01:10:32Douglas?
01:10:34The police chief?
01:10:36Yeah.
01:10:39Gordon and Larry go way back together in the posse.
01:10:49What do you two want now?
01:10:51Same thing. Gordon call.
01:10:54Well, last time I heard, he wasn't around here.
01:10:58Well, you hear a lot, don't you?
01:11:01What's that supposed to mean?
01:11:03I'll tell you what that means.
01:11:05That means it was you who tipped Gordon Call that we were coming to get him.
01:11:10That's a load of bull.
01:11:12We know you were on the phone to Wilbur Lundy before those officers went out there.
01:11:16They were fellow officers, Larry.
01:11:19You could have gotten me killed.
01:11:22We could pull you in as an accessory to murder.
01:11:27At the least, we could get you for conspiracy.
01:11:39But I want to put an end to all this.
01:11:47I've been up here a while.
01:11:51I know times are tough for the people here.
01:11:54And I know the government hasn't made it any easier.
01:12:01If I was a farmer,
01:12:04I'd probably be the leader of your damn group.
01:12:12What do you want from me?
01:12:14What do you want from me?
01:12:17I want to send a message to Call.
01:12:19I can't get to Call.
01:12:21I suspect you know people who can.
01:12:24Tell them we can make it easier on Yuri if Call gives up.
01:12:44Cut.
01:12:48Ladies and gentlemen,
01:12:56despite what you've read in the newspapers or seen on television,
01:13:01this is not a trial in which income tax is an issue,
01:13:04nor is it a trial in which Christian righteousness nor any sort of satanic evil is an issue.
01:13:11Murder is the issue.
01:13:14It's the sole issue.
01:13:17Where are you from, Sam?
01:13:19North Dakota.
01:13:22Well, what are you doing down here?
01:13:26I don't know, I guess.
01:13:29I guess I don't have any other place to go.
01:13:34I mean, the commies and the Jews,
01:13:37they ran me out.
01:13:43You miss your family?
01:13:45I miss my son.
01:13:48They live in North Dakota.
01:13:52They sure do.
01:13:55Why didn't you just go back?
01:13:59I don't know.
01:14:02Maybe,
01:14:03maybe because my name is Gordon Call.
01:14:27Better listen to what this man has to say.
01:14:30Better listen to what this man has to say.
01:14:33We've had word from some of our people.
01:14:35They say the FBI might be willing to make a deal in this case.
01:14:43That's what they're saying.
01:14:45They'll go easier on your boy.
01:14:49I'm not going to do it. I'm not, uh...
01:14:53I'm not going to make a deal with the servants of Satan.
01:14:57It's your son.
01:15:00I know that.
01:15:10I know, I know it's my son.
01:15:15God bless him.
01:15:18And he's an upright soldier of Christ.
01:15:22I'm not going in there and I'm not going to make a deal.
01:15:25I'm not going in there and I'm not going to make a deal with the government.
01:15:29Period.
01:15:30Period.
01:15:54You should take some muffins.
01:15:56Yes, if you don't I serve you.
01:15:57Ben, I want Mr. Call out of here.
01:16:02Someday the law is going to come for him. My family lives here. I don't want them hurt.
01:16:08What if I can do that, Karen?
01:16:10You heard him. I think he wants a fight.
01:16:13He may not care about his family, but I care about mine.
01:16:19Okay.
01:16:21Let's see what I can do.
01:16:28Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, have you reached your verdict?
01:16:33We have, Your Honor.
01:16:37We, the jury, find the defendant, Joan Call, not guilty of all charges.
01:16:42We find the defendants, Yori Call and Scott Fall, guilty of second degree murder in the deaths of Ken Muir and Robert Cheshire.
01:17:12We find the defendant, Wilbur Lundy, not guilty on the seven assault charges and guilty on charges of conspiracy and harboring a federal felony suspect.
01:17:31Mr. Krems, are you disappointed with the second degree murder verdict?
01:17:35Nah, murder is murder. As far as I'm concerned, justice was done and it was done fairly.
01:17:39Agent Maberly, were you disappointed?
01:17:42No, sir. When Gordon Call is brought to justice, it will be first degree murder.
01:17:50Federal Building.
01:17:52I need someone in the FBI.
01:18:00Maberly?
01:18:02Yes, sir.
01:18:04Glass and Game with the Little Rock office.
01:18:05What do you know about this woman who turned in the tip? Is she on the level?
01:18:09You'll have to decide for yourself. She'll only talk to the agent in charge.
01:18:36Mrs. Robinson?
01:18:38Yes.
01:18:40I'm Richard Maberly.
01:18:44Sir.
01:18:48Maybe we should sit over there.
01:18:51You girls sit here quietly. I'll be right back.
01:19:06Um, this man, Sam, stayed with my father until just a few days ago.
01:19:14I don't want my father involved. I want him to have immunity.
01:19:19That's not something I can guarantee.
01:19:24Um, there's a reward, right?
01:19:27Fifteen thousand dollars.
01:19:31We'll order in a minute.
01:19:36How do you know this man, Sam, is Gordon Call?
01:19:40He told me he was.
01:19:42Do you have some proof?
01:19:45Something with his fingerprints.
01:19:47A letter.
01:19:49Here's the book he read while he stayed with us.
01:19:56You're one of them. You work for the Jews.
01:20:00What? One of whom?
01:20:01That's the Masons' ring.
01:20:03The Masons are controlled by the rich Jews who want to bring this country under the control of their one-world government.
01:20:10This ring is from my college fraternity.
01:20:16I'm a law enforcement officer.
01:20:19I work for the FBI, not the Jews, Masons, or anyone else.
01:20:25If such a conspiracy exists, I'm not aware of it or a party to it.
01:20:32My job is to find Gordon Call and arrest him for the murders of two U.S. Marshals.
01:20:40Please, I can't do it alone.
01:20:44He thinks you're closing in on him, and he's going to fight.
01:20:47I'm scared we're going to be in the way when you do.
01:20:51I won't.
01:20:52What do you want me to do?
01:20:55I want you safe and alive.
01:21:00I want Gordon Call safe and alive.
01:21:06Where is he now?
01:21:14He must be with Ben Hastings.
01:21:23Ben Hastings?
01:21:39The problem is he's holed up out there with an arsenal.
01:21:42From everything I hear, he likes to shoot.
01:21:45He does, and he's one wily old bastard.
01:21:48Jane, want you to meet Richard Maberly.
01:21:49Ah, so he's chased your bad guy down into our neck of the woods.
01:21:52Yeah, sorry for the inconvenience.
01:21:55Okay.
01:21:57You're going to be staged here while the SWAT team surrounds the house from behind.
01:22:02State troopers back us up on the highway.
01:22:05Once we've moved in, we'll order the people out of the house with a loudspeaker.
01:22:10If they won't come out, we go to the tear gas.
01:22:12They're already making T-shirts with Call's picture on them.
01:22:15If we kill him, the posse will make this hometown hero a martyr.
01:22:17So I want to take him alive.
01:22:19The bottom line is, we take him.
01:22:22Okay, guys, let's go!
01:22:47Move in!
01:23:17Move in!
01:23:47Move in!
01:23:58All we need now is a dog.
01:24:01What's that?
01:24:03Nothing.
01:24:17We're going to take the driveway.
01:24:48Turn it off.
01:24:50Where are you going?
01:24:52Check on my cattle.
01:24:54Leave the gun and get out of the truck. Now!
01:25:04Who else is in the house?
01:25:06Just my wife.
01:25:08Yeah, well, let's see.
01:25:17Let's go.
01:25:39Tell her to come out.
01:25:41Sally!
01:25:43Come on out!
01:25:48Now hi-hat.
01:26:07We're going to search the house.
01:26:09You got a search warrant?
01:26:11Yes, we do.
01:26:18I run a special edition every day until the convention is over.
01:26:21And now, if you will please step out of your office,
01:26:24and look your pretty ears, because there's a photographer standing there.
01:26:26You'll be nice, sir.
01:26:28Well, don't get it.
01:26:44Is this the man in the house?
01:26:47It's him.
01:26:49Gordon called.
01:26:51We got a man down!
01:26:59Enough of this crap.
01:27:01It's Carl. Let's go!
01:27:12Here, get these people out of here.
01:27:18Get out of the way!
01:27:27Open fire!
01:27:29Come on, stay alive!
01:27:31I said come on!
01:27:35Open fire!
01:27:47Open fire!
01:28:17Open fire!
01:28:48Open fire!
01:28:53Open fire!
01:29:18Come on!
01:29:34Open fire!
01:29:36Open fire!
01:29:47Open fire!
01:30:17Open fire!
01:30:47Open fire!
01:31:18Open fire!
01:31:32How are you doing?
01:31:34All right.
01:31:37I heard he killed another officer in Arkansas.
01:31:40Shot him through a seam in his vest.
01:31:43Well, at least you got him.
01:31:46The others are convicted.
01:31:48I didn't get him alive.
01:31:51I wanted a trial.
01:31:53I wanted a conviction.
01:31:55He wanted to be a martyr.
01:31:58He got what he wanted.
01:32:04Well, let me get you to that plane.
01:32:16So, what are your plans now?
01:32:19Thought I might run for sheriff.
01:32:23Do.
01:32:25You'd make a good one.
01:32:29Ben and Sally Hastings were convicted of conspiring to harbor a federal fugitive.
01:32:33Ben was sentenced to five years in prison.
01:32:36Sally's sentence was suspended.
01:32:38Yori Call and Scott Fall remain in federal prison.
01:32:42Joan Call continues to reside in North Dakota.
01:32:46Robert Cheshire and Ken Muir were the 55th and 56th U.S. Marshals killed in this century.
01:32:54Gene Matthews was the ninth sheriff in the state of Arkansas to be killed in the line of duty.
