00:17:12So
00:17:27Italy has so many beautiful towns. It's hard to pick among them and rank the best
00:17:33But very often bellagio
00:17:35Sits on top of that list
00:17:38Located in the lake district in the north of italy on lake como
00:17:44It is one of the world's most beautiful destinations that you would really enjoy visiting
00:17:50The poet shelley called it the loveliest town in the world
00:17:54And mark twain described it as a beauty out of heaven itself. It is a picturesque wonderland
00:18:02most famous for its staircase streets
00:18:05And they lead up to a upper level shopping street so you can go up across back down again
00:18:13Just wander at will
00:18:15It's a little bit of effort, but the steps are pretty shallow
00:18:18Quite easy to climb these steps
00:18:20You'll find many scenic places for those all-important selfies
00:18:26It's a small village just 200 meters from one end to the other but within that area
00:18:32There are many little lanes to go wandering on
00:18:36Bellagio is considered one of the most picturesque places in italy
00:18:41Often referred to as the pearl of lake como due to its stunning natural beauty and charming atmosphere
00:18:49The old town is characterized by narrow streets and picturesque winding alleys
00:18:55Most of them staircases lined with charming shops cafes and restaurants
00:19:00It's a great place to wander and explore the town's layout is reminiscent of a typical medieval village
00:19:08With steep and irregularly shaped streets that climb up the hillside
00:19:13With rounded cobblestone paving that is quite easy to walk on
00:19:18the bellagio waterfront promenade
00:19:20Offers stunning views of lake como in his line with more of these charming shops hotels and restaurants
00:19:28There are these lovely cafes along the arcades of bellagio. You want to sit down and have a snack maybe have lunch right here
00:19:37Great place to take a break
00:19:40Adding to the allure of bellagio town is this scenic location along the shores of lake como
00:19:47Surrounded by mountains you can get here by a boat and the boat can take you to other villages around the lake as well
00:19:54But certainly you want to spend a lot of time here in bellagio
00:19:58The lakefront promenade through these porticos is one of the most important streets with many shops and restaurants
00:20:06If bellagio was only another typical italian town with a pedestrian zone
00:20:12With pretty pastel colored buildings and a flat terrain. It would be just another picturesque village
00:20:20However with the staircase lanes going up the hill it makes it something very special
00:20:26magical
00:20:27unique
00:20:28You do have to put in a little effort to climb those steps, but it's easy
00:20:34If you cannot climb there are some streets that will take you gradually around to the top
00:20:41On the map we see the two main streets one along the waterfront and a parallel street inland
00:20:47We'll walk along them during the program
00:20:49But for now a quick preview the porticos along the waterfront and the upper lane garibaldi the main street of town
00:20:58These two lanes are connected by nine pedestrian lanes that are mostly staircases
00:21:05Salita serbaloni is the busiest
00:21:07And most picturesque. So if you only have time or energy for one staircase make it this one
00:21:15And there are two more of the main staircase streets
00:21:19Salita mela and monastero both of them quite lovely to walk on
00:21:25That's five main lanes altogether
00:21:28So if you don't have enough time in your visit to see everything focus on those main streets
00:21:34However, you'll find that all of those lanes are a lot of fun to walk on
00:21:39If you cannot handle staircases then take via roma for a more gentle route that will bring you up the hill
00:21:46And then you could easily walk down one of those scenic staircases
00:21:51These winding hillside lanes are so beautiful
00:21:55You would probably enjoy walking every bit of them
00:21:58With a complete route covering about two kilometers and the hill is not very steep
00:22:04however to take full advantage of your visit, I suggest that you
00:22:10Walk each of those major lanes round trip. Yes back and forth
00:22:15uphill and downhill
00:22:17That way you'll have twice as much fun
00:22:19And after all the sites that you'll find along a street always look a little different when you return back in the opposite direction
00:22:26Making it a round trip
00:22:29If you walk back and forth on each staircase, it doubles your distance to four kilometers
00:22:35or two and a half miles
00:22:37Which means you could see all of town in about two hours in this wonderfully
00:22:42Complete route in that way you are getting the most out of this opportunity to explore such a magical place
00:22:50Of course you'll want to add in some more time for popping into the shops and having snacks and then maybe having lunch
00:22:57So you can look forward to a wonderful half day at least to discover bellagio
00:23:04We are now walking along that upper lane via garibaldi
00:23:08With those staircases coming up to it from down by the lake shore
00:23:12And this street is really the longest and most important commercial street in town it has the most shops and restaurants
00:23:21And it's quite level easy to walk from here. You can plunge down any of those little side lanes back to the lakefront
00:23:29Let's take a stroll down silica mela
00:23:32One of those three main staircase streets pointed out earlier and here we see at the upper level rather than a staircase
00:23:40It's a gentle ramp
00:23:41You've got cobbles on the sides and a nice flagstones in the middle for very secure footing
00:23:47With outdoor cafes offering food and wine and just ahead a little shopping alcove
00:23:54showcasing the boutique of perangelo massadri featuring scarves ties accessories
00:24:01With fashion as a vehicle to transmit cultural messages
00:24:05There are a few more shops scattered along selita mela and some private homes and apartments
00:24:11Some of which are available for rent on a short-term basis
00:24:16And now towards the bottom of selita mela. We've got steps
00:24:20It's become that staircase street and it's still very easy to walk on with excellent cobblestone paving
00:24:27If we're following my advice we could turn around and walk back up selita mela gaining that reverse perspective
00:24:34Which we'll do a little bit later
00:24:37But first we're heading back down to the promenade along the lake and then up the main staircase street
00:24:43I imagine there are some timid visitors who only stay down here at the lake level along the porticos
00:24:50They'll take a look up at the staircases and go. Oh, no
00:24:53I'm not climbing that but one of the main reasons to come here is to enjoy these wonderful staircases
00:25:00When you arrive in bellagio the first staircase street
00:25:03You're going to see is the biggest and best of all of them selita serbolone
00:25:09If you're only going to walk one staircase, let this be the one
00:25:14the town's layout is reminiscent of a typical medieval village with steep and
00:25:20Irregularly shaped streets that climb up the hillside
00:25:23But here it's somewhat unique with that lakefront setting
00:25:27And the large number of staircase streets
00:25:31It makes a great place to just wander and explore
00:25:35The lake como area is famous for silk production of silk has a long and storied history in the city of como
00:25:43Located nearby on the other side of the lake
00:25:46It has been a center of silk production since the early middle ages when silk was introduced to europe via the silk road from china
00:25:55The legend says that silk worms were smuggled out of china and brought to the eastern mediterranean
00:26:02By two merchants who were disguised as priests
00:26:05However, it was not until the 16th century that silk production in como began to flourish
00:26:11The duke of milan had planted vast amounts of mulberry trees to feed those hungry worms
00:26:18And there was abundant lake water to help in the processing
00:26:21Making como the silk capital of italy and one of the world's major producers
00:26:28Salita serbaloni is just 125 meters long
00:26:32So you'll soon arrive at the top good place for pictures and a nice view looking back down the steps
00:26:39Here we have a typical scene with a wine bar on the left and a restaurant across the street from it
00:26:45Trattoria san giacomo perched right at the top of the staircase with a nice view looking out
00:26:51The restaurant gets good ratings in social media
00:26:54And it's very popular, but they don't take reservations
00:26:57So you might have to wait a while maybe over at that wine bar or go in a non-peak time
00:27:03Or just pick one of the many other restaurants available
00:27:06This lady and her dog must be experienced staircase walkers. Otherwise, it could be a bit of a tangle on a trip with that leash
00:27:15As we walk down that same salita serbaloni in the opposite direction
00:27:19We can test my proposal its streets look different when you're returning along that same route
00:27:25And the passing parade of people is always filled with variety as you walk along
00:27:31For the devoted shoppers, you might want to walk up and down this same street several times to make sure you didn't miss anything
00:27:40You might notice the cobblestones are wet after a brief passing shower, but they're not slippery
00:27:46They're so well made you'll have great traction even after the rain
00:27:51With smooth round surfaces very comfortable underfoot
00:27:56You can get to bellagio on your own by driving or from the city of nearby como you could take a boat
00:28:03Or a bus they each take about 45 minutes with a price under 10 euro
00:28:09Or you could take a one-hour train ride from milan to verena on the shores of lake como
00:28:14And then a 15-minute ferry ride to bellagio as we'll show you in our other video about verena
00:28:44So
00:28:46So
00:29:16So
00:29:46Here
00:30:16And
00:30:46So
00:31:16Oh
00:31:47So
00:32:05Coming here on a day trip from milan with our guide taking us for an orientation walk
00:32:11What we do now is to make a tour in bellagio
00:32:14So follow me and we make the circle
00:32:17We are right in front of the town now
00:32:20and now i'm
00:32:22in the lake
00:32:23Oh, no, sorry. I'm no more in the lake. But until a couple of centuries ago here we had the lake
00:32:29Because we are right in front of the portico
00:32:32You see this long tunnel here. This is the famous portico bellagio a portico was the
00:32:39the center of the life of the town
00:32:41in the portico
00:32:43the fishermen they were
00:32:45Collecting their boats here the fishing boats. They were selling the fish to the people
00:32:50And you know, they were repairing the nets the boats and everything so they would spend the whole day here
00:32:55So the portico has been always the center part of every town
00:33:00Not just of bellagio every single town every single village we have on our lakes
00:33:06Have a portico or had the portico
00:33:08In many towns now it's disappeared
00:33:11In bellagio it's still there but as you can see now it's full with shops
00:33:16But originally just think maybe they had their small rooms where they were living or they had their tools for the fishing
00:33:24And so on and maybe they had animals donkeys were very popular here
00:33:28And they still had cows until about one century ago
00:33:33We walked along with our guide from the boat and bus station area into the town
00:33:38So these are some of the first sights you'll see upon arriving in bellagio
00:33:43Rows of shops with a few hotels and restaurants along the waterfront promenade
00:33:50So as you can see we have steps many steps steps steps
00:33:54The people here live on steps from the cradle to the grave we say yeah
00:33:58And maybe that's one of the reasons why the people I have got this longevity here
00:34:03People live longer or maybe because we drink a lot of extra virgin olive oil
00:34:09We put it everywhere, you know
00:34:11We came across one of the smaller staircase streets salita grande not many shops on this one
00:34:17But there's the hotel bellagio a boutique property with 30 rooms
00:34:22No connection with the giant hotel bellagio in vegas that has
00:34:273,500 rooms
00:34:29And that vegas property has no resemblance to the town of bellagio whatsoever
00:34:35At the end of the promenade you'll reach the grand hotel villa serbaloni
00:34:40One of the most prestigious historic hotels in the area and the only five-star luxury hotel in bellagio
00:34:48now celebrating
00:34:50150 years in business
00:34:53First constructed as a private villa in 1850
00:34:57And converted to hotel in 1873
00:35:01Just next to it you'll find via roma that easier more gentle way to walk up the hill mentioned earlier
00:35:08bypassing the staircases
00:35:10And leading up to one of the main piazzas of town the piazza della chiesa
00:35:16with the main church of bellagio
00:35:18Basilica di san giacomo
00:35:20So in the main square, we have the fountain that was originally the well of the town now
00:35:25It's the fountain you see that it's a church from the 11th century following this
00:35:31architectural style that's called romanesque
00:35:34Or romanico in italian or spanish and it's an architectural style that developed and spread everywhere in europe
00:35:41Of course, this one has been modified many times during the centuries
00:35:45So now you may see inside some baroque elements you will see some side altars
00:35:52This is a huge church
00:35:54Why?
00:35:55Because we are in bellagio
00:35:57Bellagio in the 11th century was already the most important
00:36:01Economic and fishing center on the lake the most important town on the lake. So that's why they needed a big church
00:36:09because of the importance of the church and large size of the open area
00:36:15This is generally considered the most important piazza in town
00:36:19With a medieval tower on the other side that was once part of bellagio's now disappeared defenses
00:36:26And at the base of the tower is a very popular restaurant people line up to get in here
00:36:32the piazza also has a casual cafe and
00:36:36There's a few shops around it
00:36:38And some vacation rental apartments are also available right here on the piazza
00:36:43The town's busiest commercial street extends out from here the via giuseppe garibaldi
00:36:50Extending for 300 meters with shops cafes and restaurants along both sides of it
00:36:56On a path with beautiful cobblestone paving and a level terrain to enjoy a casual stroll
00:37:04Notice up in front of us just ahead of that dog
00:37:07There is a little restaurant called diviga fresh pasta and a delightful place to have lunch
00:37:15homemade noodles with friendly service and an efficient system where you go to the counter and choose from the different types of
00:37:23pasta and sauces
00:37:25All made fresh this day right in that little kitchen
00:37:28Place your order then sit down and they will bring it to you pretty quickly
00:37:33Mmm, I had the rigatoni bolognese
00:37:36A still steaming with express service right from the kitchen counter
00:37:42It's a casual friendly place and they also serve wine beer or a spritz
00:37:48You can eat in or take the food away open from 11 a.m. Until 9 p.m
00:37:55Another food option right across the street is this deli type traditional salomeria
00:38:02There you'll find all sorts of cheeses and cold cuts and beverages to go
00:38:07Hams mushrooms truffles all in this traditional food store that's been here for more than 50 years
00:38:14Continuing along via garibaldi also called il borgo
00:38:19As the main street of downtown with numerous stores and boutique selling local merchandise with apparel and perfumes
00:38:28food and leather goods
00:38:30Beware of the tiny cars coming at you on this narrow street
00:38:34And sometimes you'll notice a little side alley leading into a courtyard with more shops
00:38:40This same street name via garibaldi is found in nearly every town in italy because giuseppe
00:38:47Garibaldi was the great military leader who unified the country during the second italian war of independence
00:38:56And in 1859
00:38:58Garibaldi's troops actually arrived in bellagio and at that point it became part of the kingdom of italy
00:39:05We've reached the effective end of this street having arrived back at the staircase called selita
00:39:12Cerbaloni, which we've already walked up and down
00:39:16So at this point i'm turning around and walking back along the same via garibaldi in the opposite direction
00:39:23Following those suggestions that I had earlier that the street will look a little bit different when you walk back the same way
00:39:30And it's so nice. You don't want to just come through here once and that's the end of it
00:39:35By this point we have seen most of town and you might be getting a little bit tired after all this walking
00:39:42Like this dog wants to just take a break
00:39:45But it's an easy glide along this smooth paving and we find ourself back towards the piazza della chiesa
00:39:53If you wanted the easy route going back down the hill without dealing with a staircase just keep going through the piazza
00:40:01Around that via romo where we came up earlier
00:40:04Or maybe you're still tired. You want another break like this dog?
00:40:08Since we're now on the upper side of town. It should be quite effortless to pick a lane and walk downhill
00:40:15We're going down selita monastero
00:40:18Which has that lovely smooth cobblestone and flagstone paving typical of the town
00:40:24You'll see it's sometimes a staircase and other times a gentle ramp depending on the terrain
00:40:31About halfway down monastero. There is a cross street called via centrale
00:40:37And this has a few more restaurants and it connects over to the adjacent staircase lanes on both sides
00:40:45Called centrale because it's right in the middle of the town
00:40:49At one end of this little lane, you'll find hotel centrale which dates back to 1922
00:40:57And was completely restored in 2005
00:41:01By the same family that founded it
00:41:04It has 18 elegantly furnished guest rooms and a breakfast room and a small garden
00:41:10Via centrale does make a few zigzags as it cuts across town
00:41:16And it actually connects seven of those staircase streets that run perpendicular to it
00:41:21The green line shows the route that you could take if you really wanted to walk every one of those staircase streets up
00:41:29Down and around in a complete exploration of bellagio
00:41:33Now we're continuing our walk down selita monastero and then we've got one more hill to climb
00:41:39up selita mela
00:41:42These have to be some of the nicest outdoor staircases you've ever seen
00:41:46They are so well made and easy to walk on
00:41:50There are no elevators in town and no escalators. So it's all muscle power. You walk up and down
00:41:58It's the challenge and the fun
00:42:01It's a good feeling when you see the bottom of the staircase is not far away. You're almost back down to ground level
00:42:09Some people looking up wondering if they should make the climb go for it
00:42:15Connecting through the porticos to get to our final staircase climb up selita mela, which we saw briefly earlier
00:42:23Now we'll climb it to the top
00:42:26As we walk along i'm going to share with you a brief summary of the history of the area to put everything in context
00:42:34It's such a beautiful place that it's believed that humans have lived here from as far back as the paleolithic
00:42:4130,000 years ago
00:42:43But the first known human settlement was about 500 bc
00:42:48A celtic tribe perhaps living in huts held up on stilts over the lake as was common in this northern
00:42:55italy lake district
00:42:57Next came the gauls and by 200 bc the territory was occupied by the romans
00:43:04And then fully absorbed as a roman province in the year 80 bc
00:43:09They brought thousands of fellow romans to colonize the area which became a mixture of races and cultures
00:43:17They introduced many mediterranean food crops, including the olive and chestnut
00:43:23and planted cypress tree forests
00:43:26After the romans the barbarians invaded and after that the lombards came in settling in what is now lombardy
00:43:34Following them the franks arrived in the year
00:43:38773
00:43:39We've made it to the top of selita mela at via garibaldi
00:43:44And now we're going back down to the promenade and stroll through the porticos to finish up our quick history
00:43:51Because of lake como's strategic location in the north of italy near france germany and austria
00:43:58It was a place of contention that was fought over for many centuries
00:44:02including invasion and
00:44:04Domination from the nearby city of como then milan took over in the 13th century
00:44:10And during the 16th century the spanish took control and dominated for more than a hundred years
00:44:17Then came the brief rule of napoleon
00:44:20And years later the arrival of garibaldi to unite bellagio
00:44:25with the kingdom of italy in
00:44:271859
00:44:29Throughout these centuries bellagio's culture and economy actually thrived with its ideal location
00:44:36Giving it a military and strategic importance
00:44:40And various industries flourished notably candle making and silk weaving
00:44:45The romantic discovery of landscape was changing how the italian lakes were seen
00:44:52Stendhal wrote
00:44:53The sky is pure the air mild a land beloved of the gods
00:44:58I lift my gaze to the most beautiful view in the world
00:45:03In the early 19th century the noble families of milan began constructing elegant villas and gardens
00:45:11Luxury shops opened in the village and tourists began arriving
00:45:16The golden age of tourism had begun
00:45:20Bellagio hotel was the first to open in 1825
00:45:25And several more splendid hotels sprang up in a short time
00:45:29Many of which are still open today run by the founding families
00:45:33such as hotel du lac
00:45:36Hotel della gran battagna and that grand hotel villa serbaloni
00:45:41Today there are more than a dozen hotels operating here and many more vacation rentals
00:45:47Our visit to bellagio is coming to an end. It's time to get on board and continue our journey
00:45:56we're going to be
00:45:57Crossing lake como heading over to verena
00:46:01In another video these ferry boats are a wonderful way to get around the lake and not expensive
00:46:07It's so easy to travel this way
00:46:10You can purchase your ticket right on the dock before departure
00:46:14You'll have a grand view looking back at the town
00:46:18With that sweet sorrow of departing
00:46:21Knowing that you have experienced such an incredibly magical and wonderful place
00:46:28There is nothing exactly like bellagio in the entire world
00:46:39Everybody's welcome to the dance floor
00:46:58Is
00:47:19Oh my
00:47:27by the grave
00:47:29in these dreams of salvation
00:47:31well sometimes

00:48:46What does it mean the weapon I need?
00:48:50Why do the doorsteps of doors are in need of installation?
00:48:55When will the time, in an unimportant line,
00:48:59Turn around, wait for a promotion?
00:49:04Don't you know, talking about a revolution sounds
00:49:10Inexcusable
00:49:12It's finally the tables of star and children

00:49:41I think that a dream like this will never come back
00:49:45I was painting my hands and the face of blue
00:49:50Then suddenly I came from the inside
00:49:56And I started to fly from heaven to infinity
00:50:03To fly
00:50:07And to sing
00:50:11To sing

00:51:12But all the dreams in the dawn ring for you
00:51:16When the moon looks at them and carries them with her
00:51:20But I keep dreaming of those eyes, your skin
00:51:25That are bluer than a sky between points of stars
00:51:30To fly
00:51:32To fly
00:51:35To sing
00:51:41In the blue of the blue of the blue
00:51:44Happy to be up there
00:51:47And I wanted, I wanted to be happy
00:51:49I had not yet seen the sun
00:51:52While the world was slowly disappearing down there
00:51:57Your voice is a sweet music that plays for me
00:52:01To fly

01:11:51From the walls to the air
01:11:55It's far from up there
01:11:59Do you think you can tell?
01:12:01Do they get you today?
01:12:05You're heroes by color
01:12:09She's got three ears

01:12:15Welcome her to change
01:12:17Into a change
01:12:21Welcome her to the world
01:12:25We all make her rich
01:12:39How I wish, how I wish you were here
01:13:08We're just two little souls who made a fishbowl
01:13:12And we threw our raft together
01:13:16And we know they're the same old plan
01:13:19Oh, they're the same old fish
01:13:24I wish you were here
01:13:38How I wish, how I wish you were here
01:14:06We're just two little souls who made a fishbowl
01:14:10And we threw our raft together

01:14:33Can you tell if you can hear me?

01:14:56Hot air for her corneas?
01:15:00How can people change?
01:15:03If you had changed
01:15:06We'd all come back together
01:15:09And we'd all make the change
01:15:23How I wish, how I wish you were here
01:15:52We're just two little souls who made a fishbowl
01:15:56And we threw our raft together
