00:09:04Isola Madre
00:09:10For the traveller arriving in Stresa from the southern start of Lake Maggiore, the first
00:09:15island of the Gulf of Porromeo to appear is Isola Madre, once called Isola San Vittore,
00:09:21due to the presence of a chapel dedicated to the saints, and then Isola Renata.
00:09:26In 1501, the diocesan administration of Novara, the owner of a large part of the island, sold
00:09:33it to Nancillotto Borromeo, on condition that he kept the church open for worship.
00:09:39In 1502, the church was demolished, with the obligation to rebuild it on Isola Inferiore
00:09:45or Isola Bella.
00:09:47From that time onwards, the island began to change.
00:09:50Work began on construction of a palace as a summer residence of the Borromeo family,
00:09:56while in the garden olive trees, vines and citruses were planted, and in 1603 it was
00:10:01already described as a delightful and salubrious place, due to the quality of the air, which
00:10:08is exceedingly temperate.
00:10:10For the modern visitor, the island is still a delightful spot.
00:10:15The garden is exquisite throughout the year, especially in the spring, when hundreds of
00:10:19flowers, azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, magnolias, wisteria and many others are in
00:10:27bloom.
00:10:28Strolling around this garden full of surprises, with white and multicolored peacocks, silver
00:10:34and golden pheasants, ducks and moorhens appearing unexpectedly, is a memorable experience.

00:16:47The island's history dates back to the 16th century, when it was acquired by the Borromeo family.
00:16:53Over the centuries, the family transformed Isola Madre into a lavish retreat, adorned with magnificent gardens and palazzos.
00:17:01Today, the island remains a testament to their horticultural, expertise, and artistic vision.

00:28:18Is it a pescatore?
00:28:20The only island in the Gulf of Borromeo that does not belong to the Borromeo family is the Israeli pescatore
00:28:27Until about 50 years ago. It was a fishing village
00:28:31Then with the economic boom it became an important tourist destination, but it is still home to 50 or so inhabitants
00:28:40By day it is bustling with tourists, but in the evening the inhabitants regain possession of the island
00:28:46Despite this the atmosphere of the village remains the same
00:28:50The 15th century frescoes in the church a part of which is the original Romanesque construction
00:28:56Narrate how important it was for the inhabitants of the past the small symmetry always neat and tidy
00:29:03Reminds the islanders of the hard lives of the fishermen and their families
00:29:07The school where the children of the island received their first education the alleys and main street illustrate the importance of space

01:03:56The jewel in the crown of the gulf of baromeo between stresa and verbania
01:04:06Isola bella
01:04:08when in 1630
01:04:11Count carlo baromeo iii decided to build a palace in a berg style
01:04:16The style that was fashionable at the time. He chose isola inferiore now called isola bella
01:04:23Count carlo immediately changed the name of the island to isola isabella the name of his wife
01:04:29From isola isabella. It then became isola bella
01:04:32The island bought by the baromeo family was a rocky crag occupied by a tiny fishing village
01:04:39In 40 years carlo baromeo iii and his son vitaliano vii
01:04:44With the help of many of the important architects of the time
