00:00How big of an issue was Wink fracturing on that coaching staff a year ago?
00:05Because that's the one thing, Conor, you know, I thought the team, year one, I know success leads the way.
00:11I thought the team was ultra prepared, ready to go.
00:14The coaching staff gave them a distinct advantage.
00:17I didn't get that sense.
00:18And I know they got ravaged by injury.
00:20And I know, I didn't get that sense necessarily.
00:22I'm not telling you the team quit, it didn't.
00:25But didn't get that sense year two like I did year one.
00:28What about this coaching staff year three?
00:29That was definitely a thing.
00:31I mean, Brian D'Abel and Wink Martindale, there wasn't a pre-existing relationship there for them to know each other that well.
00:38But they butted heads just because they're very different people.
00:42I mean, Wink, for all his bravado and what you think of who he is, he's not Rex Ryan.
00:47He's not boisterous.
00:48I mean, that's not.
00:49So when Brian D'Abel would kind of get real hot-headed and heated on the sidelines, you'd see Wink was really even keel throughout the good, the bad, everything.
00:56That's just the type of coach that he is.
00:58Not a storyline that's being talked about enough with Wink Martindale is that he took Giants defenses that really did not have a lot of talent.
01:07And his teams were designed to confuse the opposition so much.
01:11And I'm sure sometimes they confused his own players too.
01:14But he was confusing the opposing quarterback so often that the Giants were able to orchestrate success despite not necessarily having talent.
01:21That is not Shane Bowen.
01:23Shane Bowen is a very basic, go out there and run our defense.
01:27We're not going to be too crazy with our blitzes.
01:29We're not going to be too crazy with our coverage designs.
01:31We're just going to run our defense.
01:33I don't know if the Giants have the talent on defense to do that, and they didn't have the talent the last two years.
01:38But Wink was so creative and unorthodox that he was able to mask some of their flaws.
01:43I think those flaws are going to be on display for the defense, and I don't know if we're talking about that too much.
01:49As far as the chemistry within the coaching staff, that was an issue last year.
01:57If the Giants let Mike Kafka go, he was going to beat Seattle's offensive coordinator.
02:01Brian Dable was going to lose all three coordinators.
02:04They just didn't want the perception of what that was going to look like, so they gave Kafka the promotion to assistant head coach.
02:11Here's a little bump, and here's all that is.
02:15I think storyline is key throughout the year because ultimately moves back to the decision factor on whether or not Dable keeps his job or not.
02:24If that working environment, which from a coaching standpoint, was at times toxic last year, if it's toxic again this year, there's going to be some changes on the sideline.
02:35I think you'll have a new head coach for the Giants next season.
02:37Wow. You think that much pressure is on Dable this year?
02:40Yes, I do. I talked to a couple sources who know Dable personally who told me that he told them,
02:48I know I'm coaching for my job this year.
