00:00Jey Uso has been one of WWE's hottest stars since 2023, the reactions he has when he comes
00:23out are getting only even better.
00:26Yes, maybe some of you watching this video are already saying yeet yourselves, it feels
00:32like more has changed for him in 3 years than it did in the previous 11 years of his career,
00:38which was already an outstanding career.
00:41He was a popular good guy, he consistently gets the best reactions, everything is good
00:46right?
00:47Maybe, maybe not, let's get into the current issues with Jey Uso in WWE, we'll break
00:55it all down, let us know what you think of Jey Uso, are you for the yeet or against the
01:02yeeting?
01:03Let us know in the comments below, I'm Kevin Kellum, this is Sportskeeda Wrestling, stand
01:08back, there's a new wrestling quiz coming through, check out Brain Buster, the daily
01:13quiz that tests your WWE knowledge with winning strengths, stats and more, it's time to
01:19see if you're up for the challenge.
01:22In the highly competitive landscape of Monday Night Raw for WWE, which is bound for some
01:27even bigger things with the upcoming move to Netflix, it seems like Jey Uso could be
01:32at risk of maybe getting lost in the proverbial shuffle of a constantly spinning circus that
01:38has many many different people that want to take the spotlight, and it can happen quicker
01:43than you think.
01:44So what exactly is the Jey Uso problem that WWE might have, and we're just speculating
01:50here.
01:51Let's take a deeper dive into all of this.
01:53To understand the Jey Uso issue WWE has, it's worth rewinding a few years to get full context.
02:00It just so happened that Jimmy Uso's knee, that's right, Jey Uso's brother, won half
02:04of the Uso's tag team in arguably one of the greatest tag teams of their generation.
02:10That injury would hinder the team right as the pandemic was getting going, and would
02:14keep him out for the rest of 2020, making Jey somewhat a circumstantial beneficiary
02:21of this, while his cousin Roman Reigns was doing something fresh and new with his character.
02:27During the pandemic they reinvented Roman Reigns as the tribal chief, and that whole
02:32bloodline story got going, and he needed someone to spin his maniacal hubris change into an
02:39ego driven monster, and that person was the supporting player, main event, Jey Uso.
02:46And this took a lot for the audience to get used to, this was someone we were never used
02:50to seeing without his brother far away from him.
02:52He was virtually seen as inseparable from his brother to WWE fans, and all of the jokes
02:58were there about how people couldn't tell the difference between them, but that's
03:01your dumb fault because, I don't know, you can't tell twins apart.
03:06Then they went away for the first time, and he was suddenly put in that position to challenge
03:10the newly won WWE Universal Championship by his cousin Roman Reigns, with Paul Heyman
03:15at his side pulling the strings.
03:18It was all mind games, that's right, Jey Uso did not want to fall under the command
03:22of his maniacal cousin Roman Reigns, and a match he had to win to become the number one
03:28contender was put in place.
03:30Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman pulled the strings to make that possible, and when Jey faced
03:34Roman for the Universal Championship, he would be the first of many victims.
03:39And he was also the first victim to be transformed, molded in the vision of the one Tribal Chief
03:46Roman Reigns, you will be what I need you to be because I'm the leader of the family,
03:52blah blah blah blah blah, yeah, he was a real evil guy, that Roman Reigns, when he was doing
03:57the Tribal Chief thing, yeah, and when Jey's brother Jimmy returned, they were once again
04:02a tag team, but Jey made a mark during that time.
04:06He came out of the shadow of just being one half of the Usos, and when they were reformed
04:12as a tag team, they were now a fresher, reinvented version.
04:16They became more than just the two brothers, they became a vicious, very meaner version
04:21of themselves.
04:23Even though he was a part of the tag team again, they started to reign upon the tag
04:28team division and have one of the longest reigns ever as WWE Tag Team Champions in the
04:33company's history, and he was still main event Jey Uso.
04:38He was still the right hand man, but there was always a feeling that he could be more
04:42than that.
04:43We would go so far as to argue that the run he had before Jimmy came back still paid dividends
04:49to this day, it was still under their surface the whole time they had this monumental tag
04:54team run.
04:55It came at a bit of a weird way though, because it followed Jimmy leaving the bloodline abruptly.
05:02Fans wanted to see Jey Uso come out on his own as a single star, and he would finally
05:07get that opportunity in 2023, and when Jey was the first one to pin Roman Reigns after
05:13almost 1300 days at the Money in the Bank event, it was a big Civil War tag team match
05:19that set up a big blockbuster main event between Jey Uso and Roman Reigns again.
05:24In the twist, it still makes no sense a year later that Jimmy Uso his brother would return
05:31and betray his brother even though Jimmy Uso betrayed Roman Reigns, showing his alliance
05:36to the bloodline.
05:42At first Jimmy seemed like he was still against Roman Reigns, and was all personal against
05:48Jey his brother, but it ended up that he was rejoining the bloodline anyway, and since
05:53Jey was never going to be the one to dethrone Roman Reigns, although many argue he should
05:59have, it made sense for him to be in a I quit WWE situation and be brought simply back over
06:06on Money in the Bank to get away from the family and start a journey on his own.
06:10The reaction he got at Payback when he returned was massive.
06:16Fans were ready to see Jey Uso take that next real formidable step in his career and set
06:23a real path under his own name, not just the family name, and the betrayal at Summerslam
06:29while making no actual freaking sense did serve the purpose of having the Jey vs. Jimmy
06:34Wrestlemania match down the line.
06:37There were a few problems for Jey a few months into his run as a singles guy on Raw.
06:42Just a month in, he won the undisputed tag team championships with Cody Rhodes.
06:47What's the problem?
06:48It immediately begged the question, was he brought over to Raw just to be a tag team
06:52champion again?
06:53That's not a bad thing, but obviously this is something he was already familiar with.
06:58How was this too different than what fans had for him in their hopes?
07:02Yes, people that want a fantasy book were getting their tweezers out for that one to
07:06pluck a hair or two.
07:07Yeah, in only 9 days, he and Cody lost the titles back to Finn Balor and Damian Priest
07:12of the Judgment Day, but it did serve one purpose.
07:14For one, Cody got to go to Smackdown and have a silent face to face confrontation since
07:20If you were the tag team champions at the time, you could do so, and he got to have
07:24that face to face with Roman Reigns and set up their rematch half a year later.
07:30Even after that, Jey was still technically in one of WWE's biggest storylines.
07:35He was teaming up with Cody Rhodes, Seth Rollins, Sami Zayn, and Randy Orton against the Judgment
07:40Day at Survivor Series War Games in front of a sold out, rocking all state arena in
07:46Chicago.
07:47I was there.
07:48It was awesome.
07:49Overall, it was so far so good kind of situation, but the problems began to emerge in late 2023.
07:56The main issue was that Jey, while useful and very popular, was lower on the priority
08:01list.
08:02There was a lot of people getting over around this time, and sometimes people get shuffled.
08:07Sometimes some people usurp their position or overperform expectations.
08:12He wasn't going to be the one to dethrone Gunther for the WWE Intercontinental Championship
08:16that he had an iron grip on, and his title reign was breaking records.
08:21Even his feud against Drew McIntyre, the idea was to turn Drew into a vicious bad guy at
08:27the expense of Jey Uso.
08:29So WWE couldn't have Jey besting him in the match, but Jey still did the right thing
08:34by helping to get a character ready for WrestleMania season.
08:38So he was kind of in a weird position where he was used as a utility player, but was still
08:43very credible and could be a championship challenger whenever called upon.
08:47But seemingly never the guy that could win the big one on his own.
08:52Honestly, WWE wasn't really wrong about that, sometimes having that depth is clearly
08:57good for such a broad roster with so many spinning plates.
09:01Would it have made sense for him to dethrone Seth Rollins and become the World Heavyweight
09:05Champion when they faced off at Raw in December?
09:07I don't know, because then there's so many different things you couldn't do with
09:10Seth Rollins going into WrestleMania 40 season.
09:13Would it have made sense for him to dethrone Gunther and face off in early 2024?
09:18Not exactly, you got to have that big moment with Sami Zayn and Gunther at WrestleMania
09:2240.
09:23Since WWE was running for Jey vs. Jimmy match, brother vs. brother, a match that both brothers
09:29have professed they wanted for years, it made sense that he would be hunted and hunted by
09:36his brother.
09:37When came WrestleMania season, his match against Jimmy Uso, his brother, was one of the more
09:42highly anticipated bouts, and unfortunately it just fell flat for a variety of reasons.
09:50One of them being time, they simply didn't get enough time.
09:55The expectations for this brother vs. brother match were very, very high.
10:00Would it be better than Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart at WrestleMania 10?
10:05Since the bell rang, it was far from that.
10:07It circles into one of the bits of criticism that Jey Uso was slowly receiving from a certain
10:13portion of the WWE fanbase.
10:15He didn't get the time, the match wasn't positioned on the card, maybe it should have
10:19been one of the opening bouts of either night, that's also some nitpicking, but a minority
10:24of the WWE fanbase, we should emphasize a minority, were of the opinion that Jey's
10:29in-ring quality wasn't very good.
10:31He doesn't meet the 5 star standard of Dave Meltzer, and where is his moveset being varied
10:38from when he's a tag team performer?
10:41Calm down, shave your neck beard, go touch some grass, okay?
10:45It was an age-old argument of him having a limited moveset and overusing superkicks and
10:50splashes, well, that's a very thin argument because there's probably some other wrestlers
10:54you love that do probably the same thing with different moves, so that's a shallow paper
10:59thin argument.
11:00It was pointed out that he didn't have many bangers, which isn't true at all, come on,
11:06this guy was main eventing Wrestlemania 39 for the first time with a tag team match to
11:10say he couldn't pull off a singles match is just so limited in your thinking, just
11:15come on, just really try and use more than just the selfish impulsive part of your brain,
11:21just all of your brain.
11:22Also we can argue to the same segment of the audience that Jey's in-ring skills are not
11:26a part of the main thing that he does.
11:29There have been plenty of megastars in the past who weren't exactly the definition
11:32of technical in-ring wizards, but they made it big anyway, and they made us care telling
11:38stories that matter.
11:41After losing unfortunately and predictably to Damian Priest in that title shot at the
11:46Backlash event, he replaced Drew McIntyre in the King of the Ring tournament, but once
11:51again faced the roadblock of the chopping Gunther.
11:55The next month he was in a very stacked and impressive Money in the Bank ladder match,
11:59but found himself falling short again.
12:01Now obviously he wasn't the only one, he's had a good relationship with Sami Zayn, his
12:06former honorary ooze in the bloodline, now his buddy once again at Money in the Bank,
12:10he even teased going after the tag team titles with him, but once again we found ourselves
12:16coming back to the same issue with Jey Uso.
12:18Is it best for WWE to utilize him as a tag team specialist and give him another tag team
12:23reign with another tag team partner, or really run with this entire YEET thing and make it
12:29special?
12:30Yeah, they know they have a hot star who the crowd is getting behind and they can't deny
12:37him a spot on television, but the way he's being handled seems to indicate that the main
12:42decision makers within WWE either don't feel he has what it takes to be the top guy,
12:49or there's simply too many other options to choose from.
12:52Yes, WWE has a wealth of very talented, very over-talent to go put in those positions.
13:00The latter is a bit of a bitter pill to swallow, but certainly a wealth of riches and a wealth
13:04of problems that WWE is going to face when they produce a show that's on TV 52 weeks
13:10a year.
13:11It's not hard to see WWE's point of view from that perspective.
13:14They have a roster with guys like Seth Rollins, Drew McIntyre, CM Punk, Gunther, Damian Priest,
13:19Sami Zayn, so many others on Monday Night Raw and names that are rising up the ranks
13:23very fast that could join that class as well.
13:26Would it be the right decision to actually have Jey in that spot instead of someone like
13:30Gunther or Damian Priest?
13:32You can let us know in the comments below.
13:34Jey Uso is falling into a bit of a slippery slope.
13:37The whole YEET thing is still very catchy.
13:40You can see people bouncing their hands in arenas that are sold out coast to coast in
13:45unison and some are claiming though that maybe that's a comedic role?
13:48I don't know if that's exactly the case at all.
13:51But if his momentum is falling flat, it isn't, then he might be slotted back into the tag
13:56team situation and if he gets to go and have tag team banger matches, well then what about
14:01all you people that said he doesn't have banger matches?
14:04You really played out that word banger by the way.
14:06Find another way to say a match is good.
14:09That's all well and good.
14:10A lot of history there, a lot of personal motivation, all of the bloodline family stuff.
14:14We have a ton of content diving into that on our channel.
14:17Go check it out.
14:19But we can't help this feeling that is undeniably present.
14:23Could WWE do a better job with Jey Uso as a solo superstar?
14:29We're not talking Sokoa.
14:31Now Braun Breaker is the WWE Intercontinental Champion.
14:34There's almost no way that someone like Jey is going to prematurely end his reign right
14:40now.
14:41There's simply too much magic behind everything that Braun is doing.
14:44There is some that could say Gunther or the World Heavyweight Championship could be Jey's
14:49next destination and pursuit.
14:51The only solution at this point is simply putting Jey Uso in a very, very important
14:56storyline that doesn't need a championship.
14:58Maybe a personal issue, a grudge if you will.
15:01It's hard to create a hot non-championship storyline without a good backdrop, but actually
15:07this is WWE.
15:08It's not that hard, and you can do it with someone who has the clear ability to project
15:13all of the emotions on screen that Jey has.
15:17Two of the hottest non-title stories right now are Punk and McIntyre, Roman Reigns and
15:22the new Bloodline.
15:24Context is key.
15:25You can make a personal issue and then propel that into a big payoff at a big event with
15:30a big match.
15:31Two men, real issues, ring the bell, let's find out who wins.
15:35For CM Punk and Drew McIntyre, they had a freak injury moment in the Royal Rumble 2024
15:40that could completely play off into a furthering of their storyline.
15:44It did.
15:45For Roman Reigns, we don't need to explain the Oolafala feels and more prestigious things
15:51he's pursuing that aren't a championship.
15:53He's pursuing the legacy of his family and who runs that role as tribal chief.
15:59There's magic there that they can certainly play with.
16:02That's power.
16:03That's different things.
16:04That's consequence.
16:05Jey Uso needs his own consequence to fight for.
16:09There's definitely the opportunity for that to happen when Jey is in a position where
16:14he's hot, he still is, because he needs the story that gets him to that next breakthrough
16:21level that levels him up.
16:24Either that or WWE fans will have to accept the unfortunate reality that Jey Uso may never
16:30be viewed as the top guy, but the guy who's right by him.
16:36We would argue that he deserves a shot at it all in WWE, but WWE needs to navigate that
16:42and how to handle that with him is just beyond only saying yeet.
16:48Yeah, there's more to yeet here than simply just yeet.
16:53And if you're in the camp where you're saying, oh, the yeet thing is getting old
16:56quite fast, you're fickle, and you just live within a Twitter timeline of trends and
17:02memes that grow older and faster than milk sitting in a fridge.
17:06This isn't that.
17:08There are new casual fans that are yeeting right now, and they're not watching this
17:12video and arguing with you in the comments, but that's okay.
17:16Jey Uso is over with them.
17:18Jey Uso is over with the diehard fans arguing in the comments.
17:22But it doesn't matter.
17:23If he's over, where does it go from here?
17:26Does he still have the momentum to get to the next level and be main event Jey Uso again?
17:33Yeah, that's the real yeet of the situation here.
17:37If it doesn't happen, WWE could be risking another major potential single star slipping
17:43through their fingers as the stardust is glimmering off of them.
17:49What do you think?
