00:00We will start off with the National Football League in big news today out of San Francisco.
00:08As it looks like Trent Williams, their great tackle, is about to sign a mega contract with
00:15the 49ers.
00:16He's been holding out for the entire portion of their training camp and also their preseason.
00:21But on social media, his brother released a photo of Williams on a plane to San Francisco
00:27and then ESPN reporting that they are closing in on a deal.
00:31So needless to say, we'll follow this for you, but if Williams does sign, it would put
00:35his eligibility to play on Monday Night Football in some security, meaning that there is some
00:42doubt because again, he hasn't practiced or played, but at least according to the reports
00:46that we're seeing, there is at least a chance he could play against the New York Jets on
00:50one of those Monday Night Football games that are coming up in less than a week from now.
00:53So that's the very latest.
00:55If you played, drafted in fantasy football, worried about Trent Williams blocking for
00:59Christian McCaffrey, I don't think you have to worry about that going into the season.
01:02Now, this is a story that's going to affect everyone moving forward as it pertains to
01:08watching college football, pro football, basketball, and all sports if this continues, because
01:14a lot of people across the country, by the way, including myself, are subscribers to
01:20And as of right now, the Walt Disney Company have pulled themselves from DirecTV's content
01:26and therefore it's a blank screen at the moment.
01:29Just basically saying, thank you for your patience.
01:31We were unable to come to an agreement with the Walt Disney Company.
01:34And the quote basically saying is that the Disney Company is refusing to, refusing any
01:39accountability to consumers, distribution partners, and now American judicial system.
01:44This is from DirecTV, by the way.
01:45Disney is in the business of creating alternate realities, but in this is the real world.
01:49Wow.
01:50Where we believe you earn your way and must answer for your own actions.
01:53They want to continue to chase maximum profits and dominant control of the expensive consumers,
01:58making it hard for them to select the shows and sports.
02:02They wanted a reasonable price.
02:04That's from DirecTV, but it doesn't stop there.
02:06ESPN fighting back saying DirecTV chose to deny millions of subscribers access to our
02:11content just as we head into the final week of the U.S. Open and gear up for college football
02:16and the NFL season.
02:18While we're open to offering DirecTV flexibility in terms which we've extended to other distributors,
02:23we will not enter in an agreement that undervalues our portfolio and it goes on and on and on.
02:30What's the bottom line?
02:31The bottom line is a lot of you are not going to be able to watch ESPN if you have DirecTV
02:35at the moment.
02:36They have not come to an agreement.
02:38This is going on about 48 hours now.
02:40The only good news is the ABC, if they're owned and operated by your local affiliate,
02:44those will still be on the air.
02:46But if they're owned by the Disney company, then you're going to see that on your screen.
02:50Now, fortunately here in South Florida, I was able to watch USC LSU because my local
02:54affiliate is owned and operated by a local company.
03:00But if it's owned by the Disney company, it's out.
03:02And what's going to happen here, folks, I hate to say it, DirecTV, a lot of people are
03:07going to move.
03:08A lot of people are going to move to that, to YouTube TV, if they haven't already.
03:13And yeah, this is not good news for them.
03:16All right, let's get to some other news and notes from college football.
03:19The Mountain West and Pac-12 conferences, no agreement before Sunday's deadline to extend
03:23their football scheduling beyond the 2024 season.
03:27So no deal for the Mountain West and Pac-12.
03:29The Pac-12 has two teams, Mountain West has several, trying to get this figured out, but
03:34they haven't and no word in the future if they're going to be able to do this.
03:38But needless to say, they're trying to fix a conference that is broken in the Pac-12.
03:42Okay, now in college football, as I mentioned over the weekend, some insane finishes to
03:47say the least.
03:48One of the games that went right down to the wire was that game between USC and LSU.
03:52USC, as the polls come out, have made a big jump.
03:56They're now, of course, moving into range of a potential playoff spot if they continue
04:00to win, long way away from that.
04:02But they beat LSU 27-20, we'll hear from Brian Kelly later in the show.
04:06Georgia Clemson, this game was just awful.
04:08No score for like a long time in this one, until like the half.
04:13But Georgia beat Clemson 34-3.
04:15We thought that Georgia's defense was the best in the country, they definitely were,
04:18and then eventually Clemson's defense got tired and Georgia rolled them 34-3.
04:23Notre Dame went on the road, they were trailing late in this one, came back to win, and they
04:28beat Texas A&M, the final in that one.
04:3133-13 over the Aggies, 107,000 people showed up for that game, but it was not meant to
04:37be.
04:38And then it is painful for me to have to tell you that the Gators just got crushed by the
04:44University of Miami on Saturday.
04:45That was really hard to watch as a Gators fan at home.
04:48You don't often see Florida lose that badly to anyone.
04:52And I think most people feel like I'm a Hurricanes fan, because I live in South Florida, but
04:55I graduated from the University of Florida, folks.
04:58I'm a Gator.
04:59My Gators got killed.
05:01All right, let's get to the National Football League.
05:02As we mentioned, Trent Williams is back with the 49ers.
05:05Christian McCaffrey is back on the practice field.
05:08He had a strained calf, didn't play in the preseason, but it looks like he is full go
05:12and will play for the 49ers on Monday night.
05:14I don't know if you caught this over the weekend, speaking of the Gators, their former player
05:18Ricky Pearsall, he's a wide receiver on their team.
05:21He was shot in the chest near San Francisco's Union Square on Saturday afternoon after a
05:2717-year-old male attempted to rob him.
05:30He's been released from the hospital, but naturally not going to play.
05:33Just wish him the best of health for the time being.
05:34Also, Clyde Edwards-Hilaire, this was a surprise, was placed on the non-football illness list
05:39by the Kansas City Chiefs.
05:41He has recently detailed some battles with PTSD, and the Chiefs did sign Samadji Pirine
05:48to backup Isaiah Pacheco.
05:50So Pirine will probably be the backup moving forward there.
05:52And also, nothing on Jamar Chase.
05:54The Cincinnati Bengals get ready to play against New England Patriots on Sunday.
05:59If I'm not mistaken, Frank, you'll correct me, I think they are the biggest favorite
06:03in the NFL this weekend.
06:04So it may not need Chase for this week, but they're going to have to have him moving forward,
06:08I would say.
06:09All right, the White Sox just keep losing.
06:12Every record going to be broken for futility in Major League Baseball.
06:1611 games in a row now, 13-3, they lost to the Orioles.
06:19And Chris Flexen has now lost a record 20 straight games while starting for the Chicago
06:26White Sox.
06:27Chase is 36-126, would be the second most defeats behind the 1899 Cleveland Spiders.
06:35And no one that is watching was around for that season.
06:38Willie Adamas is homered in five straight games, chasing history, still needs a couple
06:42of more to make it interesting, but he has homered in five straight.
06:45Shohei Otani is chasing 50-50, and folks, it looks like this is going to happen.
06:49He's got 44 home runs, 46 stolen bases.
06:53And so stolen bases just seems academic at this point.
06:56Can Otani hit six home runs in the rest of September?
06:59I guess we'll wait to see.
07:00I mean, this is a huge, huge history coming potentially for him.
07:03Also Fernando Tatis has been activated, he's back for the Padres.
07:06U.S. Open delayed due to an issue with a line-calling system on Monday.
07:11The tournament's electric line-calling system, it just stopped working in a building because
07:15of a fire alarm, how about that?
07:16Yannick Sinner took down Tommy Paul in straight sets.
07:19He's going to play Medvedev in the quarterfinals.
07:23Also three-time defending U.S. Open men's double champions, Rahm and Salisbury, were
07:28eliminated in the third round by 13th seed Nathaniel Lemons and Jackson Withrow on Monday.
07:36And also today at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Taylor Fritz, Alexander Zevrev, also Zhang will take
07:41on Sabalenka.
07:42Those are some of the matches there.
07:44Over in the WNBA, Phoenix Mercury guard Natasha Cloud is going to serve a one-game suspension
07:49after reaching the league's technical foul limit.
07:53She reached her seventh technical foul on Sunday.
07:56Going to have to take a one-game suspension.
07:58Indiana Fever, Red Hot, Kaitlin Clark, 28 points, 12 assists, 100-93 the final.
08:03As they keep rolling in the WNBA, the Clippers, they have center Ivaka Zubac.
08:09He's agreed to a three-year, $58.6 million contract extension.
08:15And also Indiana Pacers guard TJ McConnell has agreed to a four-year, $45 million contract
08:21extension through the 28-29 season.
08:24Welcome back to Newswire here on Sports Grid.
08:26Craig Misch back with you.
08:27And we're joined by Matthew Waters from Legal Sports Report.
08:30We'll dive into the very latest on a company that Matthew covers a lot at LSR called Camby,
08:35a new partnership in tow.
08:36We'll talk about that.
08:37Also the latest, if you've ever heard of this company called Clutch Bet.
08:40Updates on that as well.
08:41Matt, welcome back and hope you had a nice Labor Day.
08:44Thanks for coming on Newswire.
08:45Sure did.
08:46Thanks, Craig.
08:47Just happy that we can finally say NFL football's back.
08:50It's been too long.
08:51It is.
08:52It is.
08:53I'm happy to say college football is back.
08:54That didn't last long for me, though, just one week before my team bowed out a little
08:58bit here.
08:59Okay.
09:00So with the NFL coming back, we get all kinds of announcements, new shows, new media, new
09:03TV, new betting.
09:04I mean, this is just natural, first week of the NFL.
09:07An announcement coming over the last couple of days from the state of Ohio where they're
09:12taking a closer look at responsible gaming in terms of making sure that people are doing
09:16the right thing, betting the proper amounts.
09:19You can tell me a little bit more as to what the state of Ohio is doing to make sure responsible
09:24gambling and betting occurs.
09:26Yeah.
09:27You know what, Craig?
09:28This is really interesting from the state of Ohio.
09:31And I've come on here plenty of times and sung the praises of Ohio.
09:36I think they've done a great job regulating the industry for their state.
09:39And they've had a larger impact on the industry in the U.S., right?
09:45They've made a couple of changes.
09:46The free bets, not being able to say that anymore.
09:48That started in Ohio.
09:50And one other thing that Ohio has been worried about is part of responsible gambling is athlete
09:56harassment, Craig.
09:58We see this a lot on social media with the NCAA athletes.
10:03And so the responsible gambling push for Ohio this year is called More Than a Bet.
10:08And it isn't just focused on betting responsibly.
10:12Now, when you go to More Than a Bet, the website, it does include your standard, you know, take
10:17a quiz to see if you are at risk for, you know, gambling problems and whatnot.
10:23But they're leaning heavily on respecting athletes, Craig.
10:28And it's pretty powerful what they have on the website.
10:31They have athletes reading tweets that were sent to them saying that harm should come
10:36to them, their parents, their families, their pets, because of how they underperformed in
10:41the game and did not win a prop bet or help the team cash on a bet that these people online
10:49have made.
10:50And, you know, you could say it's an internet problem, right?
10:53I mean, social media has given voices to plenty of people that don't deserve them.
10:58But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what the problem is.
11:02These athletes are still facing that backlash.
11:05They say one in three high-profile athletes receives abusive messages from someone with
11:10a betting interest, and nine out of ten times it's done on social media.
11:16And they say now that up to 25% of it is all based on betting.
11:22So Ohio, again, is being a leader in what they're doing to regulate sports betting.
11:28Now they're not just worried about if you're gambling correctly, but if you lose, how are
11:32you acting?
11:34They had floated around potentially banning you from all sportsbooks in the state if you're
11:40caught doing something like this.
11:42So Ohio is taking this seriously.
11:45You know, this is a push.
11:47The Ohio Responsible Gambling Organization is a push between the casino and sports betting
11:52regulators, the lottery regulators, and the Department of Mental Health and Addiction
11:56Services.
11:57So kudos to Ohio.
11:59I wish we could see more like this from all the other states, Craig.
12:02I think everybody would benefit from it.
12:04Yeah, no, I agree.
12:05And it's really good to see at least one state getting out in front of it.
12:08Now, a company that you've covered a lot over at Legal Sports Report and still continue
12:12to do so is a company called Camby Technology Company that's had a good little run here
12:17over the last couple of years, Rush Street Interactive.
12:19And it's another, I mean, I wouldn't call them a little company, but they do have BetRiver,
12:23some other sports betting operators here.
12:26And a new partnership has been, I guess, achieved here.
12:29Tell us the latest over at LSR.
12:31Yeah.
12:32Camby and Rush Street Interactive have agreed to continue their multi-year partnership.
12:38Craig, this was one of the first deals that was signed after PASPA fell back in May 2018.
12:44I want to say they signed this, they announced it like three days after the Supreme Court
12:49ruled against PASPA.
12:50So this is one of the longest partnerships that we have in U.S. sports betting.
12:54And for Camby, it's interesting.
12:56Camby is a technology provider.
12:58So you go to them for whatever your sports book doesn't have, right?
13:02And they had bigger partnerships with DraftKings and a Barstool sports book at one time.
13:07But those guys didn't renew.
13:09They went and they bought their own technology.
13:12And BetRivers isn't really interested in doing that.
13:15They're focused more on casino first.
13:17And you're right, Craig.
13:19It's easy to look at the market share, how it breaks out in the U.S., and call BetRivers
13:23a smaller company.
13:25But I think they would tell you that they are a right-sized company for what they want
13:29to do.
13:30They lead with casino, but then they also build on top of the product that they get
13:35from Camby.
13:36They have a really cool Prop Central that I'm in Delaware, so I bet with BetRivers.
13:41And it's great to have something like that, to open up the app, be able to find all your
13:45props in one space.
13:46And they said that's done great for them.
13:49So I think 70% more same-game parlays because of that this year than the same time period
13:56last year.
13:58So it's really working out well for both of the companies.
14:02And like I said, for Camby, this is the only U.S. partnership, the biggest U.S. partnership
14:07that they've had, that have renewed.
14:10And while the remaining states out there are kind of slow to legalize sports betting, we
14:17still have, you know, what is it, 36 states and Washington, D.C.?
14:22So there's still plenty of market out there as those states continue to grow and ramp
14:27up from their launch phases.
14:29And Camby wants to be, they want to be there.
14:32They want to be in the U.S.
14:33They want to be part of that.
14:35Their other bigger partnership is with BallyBet.
14:39And Craig, that is one that I would call small.
14:41And Camby was even disappointed with BallyBet when they came out of the gates, and they
14:46really weren't pushing too hard.
14:48They weren't really marketing too hard.
14:49I think Camby thought that was going to be a bigger horse for them than it has turned
14:53out to be so far.
14:55But definitely a great sponsor, partnership here between Camby and Rush Street.
15:00Yeah.
15:01I would agree.
15:02And really worth noting that some of these smaller companies are able to do a really
15:06good job and stay active on the sports betting front.
15:09The unfortunate part of this is that, let's just be honest, you know, Matt, some of these
15:13companies don't have millions of dollars in promos and parlays to give out.
15:19And it seems to me that that could be the demise of some of these smaller sports betting
15:22operators.
15:23And that's what we're going to touch on here.
15:25ClutchBet is the first sports betting operator shutting down in the United States.
15:30And then we'll get to Betsafe, another company out of Colorado.
15:33So I mean, Matt, it just tells you how poorly things must be going if you can't make it
15:39to the football season.
15:42That's what really shocks you, right?
15:44It's right before the football season and you would think this is where you make your
15:47money for the year.
15:48And Craig, they're just too small.
15:51They're too small.
15:52Now, with ClutchBet, their parent company, BlueBet, is from Australia.
15:56They actually just merged with another Australian betting company.
15:59So they're just taking their dollars and they're focusing on it there.
16:03And they basically said, you know, look, the U.S. operators that are at scale right now,
16:09it's just simply too hard for the smaller operators to compete with that.
16:14And Betsafe is the same.
16:16They are operated by a company called Betsin.
16:18And Betsin has a ton of European sports betting knowledge.
16:24They've been doing it for years.
16:25But it just didn't work out in Colorado.
16:28There were some people on social media that I saw that didn't even know that Betsin had
16:33a sportsbook in Colorado called Betsafe.
16:36So, you know, these smaller companies, it's interesting to see when the smaller companies
16:42are building out their technology and they have something tangible to offer, they're
16:46getting bought up.
16:47When it's smaller companies like this and they only have their player lists, you know,
16:52a lot of those players are probably with DraftKings, FanDuel, whoever already, right, if you're
16:55signing up with a ClutchBet or a Betsafe.
16:58So there may not be a whole lot of value in those player databases and they just kind
17:02of fold up and we're seeing it continue and it's going to keep going, Craig.
17:08Yeah.
17:09No, I think so.
17:10And again, it's just the nature of the beast with sports betting.
17:13Some companies will survive, some won't.
17:16And again, some reorganize.
17:17That's all fair.
17:18All right, Matt.
17:19Great to catch up with you.
17:20Thanks for coming on Newswire.
17:21We'll talk again later in the week.
17:22Is that accurate?
17:23Thanks, Ner.
17:24Yes, I appreciate it.
