00:00These are unidentified flying objects.
00:29Are they proof that we are being visited by civilizations from other stars?
00:46Or just what are they?
02:16Binda! Binda! Come out here! Grab the camera!
02:38What?
02:40I swear, coming out of the north, going like blazes, I have never seen anything like that before!
02:46Oh, damn!
03:16You did see it, didn't you?
03:26I don't believe it. But we saw it. Sam?
03:31I'm not sure. Ask me tomorrow.
04:16Come in. Sergeant Fitz, permission to enter your quarters.
04:32Yes, sir. Come on in, Captain.
04:34Sergeant Harry. Sergeant, I'm not one to criticize a man's personal habits, but...
04:41Yes, sir?
04:43What is that aroma?
04:44Well, you see, Captain, ever since I've been here at Wright-Patt,
04:48these boys from Ohio keep telling me about the large catfish they catch in Ohio River.
04:52Hauled them in about a dozen. Big around as a telephone pole.
04:56Now my magic bait and I, we're gonna find out if there's any truth in it.
05:05I don't know why I want to know, but what is it?
05:07You being an officer and a gentleman, do I have your solemn assurance
05:15you won't divulge the recipe to anyone?
05:18Harry, I don't think I'm gonna get a lot of requests.
05:21Bullfrog tadpoles. See what you do, you marinate them with about a pound of pig's liver,
05:27and after a while...
05:29I get the picture.
05:31Oh, they really start to grow!
05:32Sergeant Lauders and I rented a houseboat.
05:35Gonna use my three-day pass to defend the honor of South Carolina fishermen everywhere.
05:41Um...
05:44Where am I?
05:46I hate to cancel a pass that's already commenced.
05:49What if it's important, sir?
05:51We got a stack of Twixes from California.
05:53Little town near the coast, Davidson. It's north of Santa Barbara.
05:56Last night, 28 people reported sighting a UFO.
05:59Six different locations.
06:00A mass sighting?
06:02Only one thing.
06:04Now, METRO predicts a dense fog gonna sock in the whole coast.
06:07There's a C-141 leaving for Vandenberg in an hour,
06:09and if we hustle, we might make it before the airport's shut down.
06:12If your catfish can wait.
06:14Well, that's the beauty of this stuff, sir. It just keeps getting better and better.
06:18I bet it does, sir.
06:20This is Bill Gillette, KTNS Radio, Davidson.
06:24I've been told that the Air Force is sending a team from Project Blue Book
06:28to investigate Davidson's unidentified flying objects.
06:32But it has been three nights now since the UFOs were first sighted over Davidson.
06:37Your reporter, Bill Gillette, is wondering, as you must be wondering,
06:41what the hell is going on here?
06:43I don't know.
06:44Over, Davidson. Your reporter, Bill Gillette, is wondering, as you must be wondering,
06:49is the Air Force dragging its feet on this one?
06:52Is there any reason to suspect a cover-up?
07:45Nice landing in this fog, thanks.
07:47No sweat, Captain. Any time you need a hop, give me a call.
07:50Gotcha.
07:52Captain Ryan?
07:54Finally.
07:56Captain Harlan, Public Information Office, Vandenberg.
07:58Hi. This is my partner, Sergeant Fitz.
08:00Welcome to UFO City.
08:02I'll tell you, I've never seen or read of anything like this.
08:05It's the first time I've seen anything like this.
08:08I'm glad you're here.
08:10I'm glad you're here.
08:11Welcome to UFO City.
08:13I'll tell you, I've never seen or read of anything like these sightings.
08:16Just wait.
08:23Captain Harlan, these sightings began two days ago, Monday night?
08:27Correct. Professor Robinson was the first one to see them.
08:30We have an appointment with him first thing tomorrow morning.
08:33That's Professor John Robinson at the college.
08:35The hotel is just a short walk away.
08:42All right, Professor Robinson.
08:44Can we begin with the first time you saw the lights?
08:46Fine.
08:48A friend, Samantha Klein, who's a professor of biology,
08:52was over for dinner,
08:54and we were discussing the problems involved
08:58in teaching our various disciplines.
09:00What problems have you got, Sam?
09:02You're a full professor.
09:04You've got tenure.
09:06You can do any research you want.
09:07Your future's ideal.
09:09The only trouble with the future
09:11is that it gets here so much faster than it used to.
09:14Ha.
09:16Biology's so much simpler.
09:18Oh, you social scientists make it sound so easy.
09:22Okay, if I want my students to explore paranoid neurosis,
09:27now, where do I whistle up a dozen of those on short order?
09:30You could try the faculty lounge.
09:32Come on, Sam. I'm serious.
09:34This is the place.
09:35Sam and I will whip up a salad.
09:37You watch the bird, John.
10:36When it disappeared,
10:38we were practically in a state of shock.
10:41Are you all right?
10:43Am I all right?
10:45Am I all right?
10:52Come on, Sam. You did see something.
10:55All right, I saw something, but what was it?
10:58I, uh...
11:00You know what it was. It was a UFO.
11:02It had to be.
11:05Do you really think so?
11:07First thing I did was call the paper.
11:10But, uh, as I was talking, this great idea occurred to me.
11:15I teach a course in statistical methods.
11:18What a, uh, great opportunity
11:20for the kids to learn interviewing techniques, right?
11:23So I...
11:25I asked the paper to publish my name and my number,
11:29and I asked other witnesses to call up
11:31and tell me what they'd seen.
11:33The response was unbelievable.
11:35They got more real experience in one day
11:38than I could teach them in a whole year of theory.
11:49Isn't this an amazing response we're getting?
11:51It's incredible. I can't believe it.
11:53Can you cope?
11:55Of course.
11:57By the next night, Linda and I had to get out of that house
12:00or we'd go bananas.
12:02Samantha wanted our help with some more precise measurements,
12:05so we set up in a field south of town,
12:09and we hoped they'd come back.
12:11Dad, a little that way.
12:13Uh, down, down like that.
12:17Hold it.
12:20Yeah, that's right. Pound it in.
12:35Okay.
13:06It was as if all of us were looking up into the sky
13:09for some mysterious answer.
13:15Nothing else mattered.
13:17Nothing.
13:19Nothing.
13:21Nothing.
13:23Nothing.
13:25Nothing.
13:27Nothing.
13:29Nothing.
13:31Nothing.
13:33Nothing.
13:35Nothing else mattered.
13:50You're right about these.
13:52They're not much good, except for this set.
13:54Something your people at Vandenberg can get their teeth into.
13:57Right, sir?
13:59Let's concentrate on these for the purpose of detailed analysis.
14:01What do you want to do with the rest?
14:03Well, they're yours for your files.
14:05You can keep them with your service cap in your hand.
14:30Hi, is Dr. Klein here?
14:32Stop! Right where you are. Don't move.
14:33Acceptor, turn around and get out.
14:35Dr. Klein, I have some gentlemen...
14:37Flying saucers.
14:39My experiment is in a very critical stage, Captain.
14:42Dr. Klein, you promised us your negatives.
14:44Uh, second drawer from the end.
14:46It's in the envelope.
14:48I typed up all the data.
14:50Focal length, F-stops, ASA rating.
14:52Anything else?
14:54Dr. Klein, I'm Captain Ben Ryan,
14:56Foreign Technology Division, Wright-Patterson.
14:58What's your question?
15:00The Robinsons told you the story.
15:01My experience is theirs in every detail.
15:03They mentioned you were computing angles
15:05of elevations for distance and time.
15:07Correct. It's all on the sheet.
15:09The objects traversed 120 degrees of arc in three seconds.
15:15Bye.
15:17What do you think it was, Dr. Klein?
15:19Unknown lights.
15:21Lights in the sky.
15:23I'd say she's a rather positive person.
15:26Reminds me of a third-grade teacher I had.
15:29And a master sergeant in pre-flight.
15:47And the second night it came over,
15:49I had a feeling that something was wrong.
15:50And the second night it came over,
15:52I'd just put myself on Code 7.
15:54Pardon me, Sergeant Gomez.
15:56Does Code 7 mean the same?
15:58Meal break.
16:00At the Adobe restaurant,
16:02Webster and Vallejo Way.
16:04And I got a funny feeling.
16:06Hard to describe.
16:08I just knew it was gonna happen again.
16:10So I stopped,
16:12looked up,
16:14and I swear,
16:16there it was.
16:21No...
16:23No...
16:25No...
16:27No...
16:29No...
16:31No...
16:33No...
16:35No...
16:37No...
16:39No...
16:41No...
16:43No...
16:45No...
16:47No...
16:48No...
16:58It was...
17:00truly wonderful.
17:02Almost...
17:04like being in church.
17:07It's nothing I'm ashamed of.
17:09I know a cop is supposed to be hard-nosed,
17:12factual,
17:14not talking about things being wonderful, right?
17:15Just because we put on a uniform, officer,
17:17doesn't mean we leave our feelings behind.
17:21I was an air traffic controller
17:23at Los Angeles International
17:25for five years.
17:27The objects I saw on the nights
17:29of the 16th and 17th
17:31were luminous blue-green
17:33traveling at great speed
17:35at approximately 12,000 feet.
17:38In your experience, sir?
17:40In my experience,
17:42I've never seen anything quite like it.
17:44But I, uh...
17:46I expect to see it again.
17:48Tonight.
17:50I know they're from another civilization.
17:53Outer space.
17:56Well, poking around Vandenberg,
17:59all those rocket chutes
18:01and stuff like that,
18:03I'm sure I've seen them before.
18:04Poking around Vandenberg,
18:06all those rocket chutes going off,
18:08I've seen B-52s.
18:10I've seen experimental craft
18:12out of Edwards.
18:14These UFOs don't look anything like that.
18:16And they sure go a heck of a lot faster.
18:19They don't resemble
18:21any ordinary aircraft at all, ma'am.
18:23My pictures look like conventional planes.
18:28And I never knew our planes
18:30flying around here
18:32made the Cusacks so funny.
18:34Coots.
18:36Fancy name for them is scoters.
18:38All us natives call them coots.
18:40Like a duck.
18:42No bird sounds
18:44when the UFOs went over.
18:46Then soon as they made
18:48that big sharp turn,
18:50the coots all started
18:52screeching and quacking.
19:05The coots know they're
19:07from another planet, too.
19:35Ever play that game
19:37when you were a kid, Sergeant?
19:39See how many people
19:41you can make look up?
19:43Yes, sir.
19:45They named it the power of suggestion.
19:47They weren't just fooling around.
19:49It's hard not to get caught up
19:51in that mood of suggestion.
19:54You feel it, don't you?
19:56Sure do.
19:58What the heck?
20:04Sergeant Gomez.
20:16The city council voted.
20:18Turn off the street lights
20:20so the people can see the UFO better.
20:35Captain, I'm sorry.
20:37This old fool is my Uncle Carlos.
20:39He lives in a blind arroyo
20:41north of town.
20:43Makes a little money
20:45with his drawings
20:47that he sells to the tourists.
20:51It's not bad.
21:01I told him that I'd talk to you experts
21:02and he insists that I tell you.
21:04About two nights ago
21:06at his shack,
21:08this time of night,
21:10he was drinking coffee.
21:12I think a little cerveza, too.
21:14No cerveza.
21:16Okay, no cerveza.
21:18Tell him I saw
21:20a huge, gigantic machine
21:22like the wing of a hawk
21:25and it made sparks
21:27and it screamed like a snake.
21:31He says he saw a giant machine that night
21:34that looked like a hawk's wing.
21:37It was spitting fire
21:39and hissing like a snake.
21:48How big was the machine?
21:57He says big,
21:59like six freight cars.
22:01That could be, what,
22:03300 feet wide?
22:05How high was it?
22:07He says big,
22:09like six freight cars.
22:11That could be, what,
22:13300 feet wide?
22:15How high was it?
22:17He says big,
22:19like a church bell.
22:22He says like the steeple of the church.
22:25He has a drawing of it.
22:48Hello?
22:49Captain Ryan, I'm Bill Gillette.
22:51I'm a reporter for the Valley Journal.
22:53I also host a local radio show.
22:55I'm sorry, Mr. Gillette,
22:57we're just on the way out.
22:59Ah, that's too bad.
23:01Well, I thought maybe you'd like to see
23:03an advanced copy of today's paper.
23:05Anyway...
23:07Well, you get an A for accuracy.
23:09And for snappy headlines.
23:11We're not trying to sensationalize
23:13this thing, Sergeant Fitz.
23:15As a matter of fact, Captain,
23:17that's when flying saucers
23:19begin to influence city councils.
23:21You mean turning off the streetlights last night?
23:24That's a story right down page three.
23:26I would like to know, Captain,
23:28what are your findings so far?
23:30We have nothing for you at this time.
23:32All right.
23:34You know, usually you do make some effort
23:36to inform people involved in a sighting
23:38what your conclusions are.
23:40I understand you've been crying
23:42Air Force cover-up on your radio show, Mr. Gillette.
23:44I can assure you that's not happening here.
23:45We're opening up.
23:47We're investigating a multiple sighting
23:49and the investigation isn't complete.
23:51And I am simply submitting, Captain,
23:53that you owe these Davidson people some answers.
23:55We'll be pleased to take it to the people.
23:57I can plan on having a news conference.
23:59We'll consider it.
24:01That's all I can promise.
24:03Well, that's all I wanted to hear, Captain.
24:07Will you also make sure
24:09that your listeners hear it, too?
24:11Ah, I'll consider it.
24:13That's all I can promise.
24:24First of all, we plotted the locations
24:26of about 50 witnesses on this map of Davidson
24:28and its surroundings.
24:30Based on that information,
24:32we've developed a fairly accurate line of flight
24:34for the UFOs marked here in red.
24:36Now, this course changed.
24:38If the object was flying at high altitude,
24:41this turn would have had to have been
24:42a right angle made almost instantaneously.
24:45That's consistent with other sightings.
24:47So, we're down to Samantha Klein's pictures.
24:51With no radar confirms,
24:54no research or weather balloons in the area,
24:57Vandenberg didn't have any launches.
25:00These are the only bit of solid evidence we have.
25:12It's good that she got this transmission tower
25:14as a reference point.
25:16I see.
25:18The Vandenberg technicians break down
25:20any estimates of speed, sir?
25:22Well, within limits.
25:24It could be a vehicle
25:26traveling at an altitude of 12,000 feet,
25:28about 250 feet in width,
25:30with incredibly bright lights,
25:32traveling at speeds in excess of 3,000 knots.
25:35Or, at the bottom end of the scale,
25:38it could be something at an altitude of 150 feet,
25:40traveling at 35 miles an hour.
25:43Some scale.
25:45Sir, you saw it out at the strip.
25:47What altitude did you estimate?
25:49I would have guessed at least 10,000 feet,
25:51with amazingly bright lights.
25:53But, I'd be the first one to admit
25:55the fog is darn misleading.
25:57I could only follow them a few degrees
25:59within sight of my zenith.
26:01Is this a recent-issued geodetic survey?
26:03Correct.
26:05And these are the high-power transmission lines?
26:07Right. One of the towers she happened to get.
26:08What are they?
26:10The standard is 40 meters.
26:12130 feet.
26:14Assuming the UFO was at the minimum altitude,
26:16this right-angle turn here
26:18could have been the result
26:20of its avoiding this tower.
26:22That's an interesting theory, sir.
26:24But let me fill you in
26:26on Samantha Klein's negatives.
26:28Ten of them numbered 1 through 12.
26:31What's missing?
26:33Uh, 9 and 10.
26:35Marked personal.
26:36Personal?
26:38What does she mean, personal?
26:40Why don't you ask her?
26:57Captain.
26:59Dr. Klein, can we talk to you
27:01for just a minute, please?
27:03Haven't got a minute.
27:05It's very important, Doctor.
27:09Captain, you'll have to forgive Sam.
27:11She's so absorbed
27:13in this series of experiments.
27:15It's a thesis.
27:17Look, we had to drag her out
27:19of that lab for lunch today.
27:21Perhaps Linda and I could help.
27:23There are two negatives
27:25missing from the roll she gave our photo team.
27:26We wanted to see them, too.
27:28I think that she took
27:30a couple of pictures of us that night.
27:32Remember, honey?
27:34Yes.
27:36I don't think Wright Patterson
27:38gained very much UFO information from them.
27:40Isn't her set really impressive?
27:42They're still being analyzed.
27:44Well, you have to forgive Sam.
27:46I've got a seminar.
27:48It's nice to see you both.
27:50Dear.
27:52Dr. Robertson, one more minute, if we may.
27:54Newspaper interview this morning?
27:56Oh, boy.
27:58Don't blame me.
28:00Good old William Shakespeare Gillette
28:02makes me sound like a revivalist or something.
28:04We must turn on the lights
28:06so that they know we're here.
28:08I said that as a joke.
28:10Look where it gets quoted.
28:12He didn't say anything
28:14about my concern over the mass hysteria
28:16that this town is locked into
28:18or how that kind of thing can grow.
28:20I am a laughingstock of the faculty.
28:23Just wait till I see that guy.
28:24John.
28:26Right.
28:28Gentlemen, anything that we can do to help,
28:30please give us a call.
28:36So a flying saucer flies overhead.
28:39Dr. Klein starts taking snapshots of her friends.
28:55I didn't ask for a drink.
28:57Well, I just thought that you...
28:59Oh, I know.
29:01I thought I needed one.
29:03What's next?
29:05A little bit of analysis?
29:07Maybe a sleeping pill?
29:09I wish you would.
29:11Maybe then you...
29:13get some sleep.
29:15Does it matter that much?
29:19I'm sorry.
29:22This problem is really
29:24driving a wedge between us.
29:27If I could just get this to work,
29:29we could have what we've always wanted.
29:31We could be equal partners.
29:33We could be committed teachers.
29:35You and me.
29:37You and me.
29:39You and me.
29:41You and me.
29:42We could be committed teachers.
29:44You and me.
29:46We can be secure.
29:48You must have enough data by now.
29:51What you're doing is not scholarship, it's...
29:53It's what?
29:55Manipulation.
29:57Well, manipulation's the way of the world.
30:00Well, I don't want it the way of my marriage.
30:13And the first night,
30:15it was just as John had taped it for you.
30:18Except for a few small details.
30:21We weren't just talking idly about teaching.
30:24John was feeling bitter.
30:26I had just received my tenure at the college.
30:29My position was secure, but John's...
30:32Are you gonna let me go? I know it.
30:34Don't talk like that.
30:36All they insist upon is tangible evidence
30:38that you're contributing.
30:40Contributing to the grand march
30:42of American psychology, ta-da.
30:44Oh, stop crying in your margarita, John Robinson.
30:47You knew when you chose this profession
30:49that your advancement in the system
30:51would be dependent upon publishing articles,
30:54doing recognized research.
30:56Those are the ground rules for tenure.
30:59Publish or perish.
31:01That's what it's called, yes.
31:03Well, it helps to be female.
31:05That's nonsense.
31:07Is it?
31:13We did see the things.
31:15And it was amazing, as you know.
31:18But afterward...
31:21Are you all right?
31:23Am I all right?
31:25Am I all right?
31:27Ha, ha, ha.
31:37I'm sorry.
31:39I'm sorry.
31:40I'm sorry.
31:51Night desk.
31:53This is Dr. John Robinson,
31:55and this is not crazy.
31:57I have seen a flying saucer.
31:59John's specialty is crowd hysteria,
32:02mob psychosis.
32:04You could see the wheels turning in his head.
32:06He was going to be the first psychologist
32:08to study the effects of a UFO encounter up close.
32:13We know the rest.
32:15They mobbed us the next day.
32:17He was on his way.
32:19A breakthrough paper, tenure,
32:22maybe even a job at a bigger university.
32:26Nothing was going to stop him.
32:29Not even the truth.
32:32We discovered the real truth the next night.
32:39Just center on the bubble while sighting the object.
32:42And then I take my reading?
32:44Right.
32:46You ready with the stopwatch?
32:48Yes.
33:08Ah!
33:10Ah!
33:12Ah!
33:14Ah!
33:16Ah!
33:18Ah!
33:20Ah!
33:22Ah!
33:24Ah!
33:26Ah!
33:29Ah!
33:31Ah!
33:33Ah!
33:35Ah!
33:36Ah!
33:38Ah!
34:07Here's number 10, gentlemen.
34:10You'll understand why John didn't want you to know about it.
34:17It's a new one, isn't it, Kevin?
34:31Ladies and gentlemen,
34:33the experts have come to the conclusion
34:36that the secrets of Blue Book are always full of surprises.
34:39They are surprising us today by actually showing up.
34:43Captain Harlan, thank you very much.
34:46Would you come this way, please?
34:48Captain Ryan and Sergeant Fitz.
34:57I hope you investigators come clean with us citizens for once.
35:02Now, I saw those UFOs with my own eyes.
35:04I sent in a whole roll of film to the Pentagon,
35:08and they never even acknowledged it.
35:11Pictures of the UFOs.
35:14I wish them luck.
35:17Ladies and gentlemen of the community,
35:20ladies and gentlemen of the press,
35:22Captain Harlan, Frank Stout,
35:24is Washington trying to slough us off
35:27just sending a captain out here?
35:29I mean, aren't the Davidson UFOs worth at least a lieutenant colonel?
35:33The area of Davidson was overflown
35:36on the nights of the 15th, 16th, and 17th
35:40by unidentified objects
35:42emitting a very bright blue-green luminescence
35:46traveling from northwest to southeast.
35:49I assume all of you here saw at least one flight?
35:53Right so far, Captain.
35:55I'm afraid so.
35:57I'm afraid so.
35:58I assume all of you here saw at least one flight?
36:01Right so far, Captain.
36:03How are we doing, Sergeant?
36:05Ought to be it, sir.
36:09These are photographs
36:11taken by you and your neighbors.
36:14The excellent enlargements were taken by a member of the college faculty,
36:17almost professional.
36:21As you know,
36:23always the blue-green color,
36:25the objects, all of them V-shaped,
36:26boomerang-shaped, if you will.
36:28Generally the shape of the Northrop flying wing,
36:31which some of you may recall.
36:33Flew out of Edwards.
36:35But don't try and tell us those UFOs were your experimental aircraft.
36:39You're always saying that.
36:41Well, we're not saying that, sir.
36:43Sergeant?
36:45Regarding other possibilities,
36:47exhaustive search of radar logs
36:49from all monitoring stations,
36:51thorough checks of flight plans
36:53show no aircraft in the area at time of overflight.
36:56We were convinced
36:58that these glowing objects were indeed real.
37:01Real what, Sergeant?
37:03Air Force photo analysis
37:05showed that these objects
37:07weren't necessarily flying at high altitudes.
37:09They might be as low as 150 feet.
37:12Now remember the blue-green color,
37:14which is the hue, roughly,
37:16projected by your city street lamps,
37:18which are mercury vapor.
37:20Now as you recall,
37:22the city council turned off those street lights
37:24on the night of the 18th,
37:26which makes perfect sense.
37:28Okay, Captain, we know all that.
37:30Fine.
37:32Here's something that none of us knew
37:34until a little while ago.
37:39A model of a white-winged scoter,
37:41Malonita de Glandi.
37:44The scoter, or a coot,
37:46as he sometimes called it,
37:48is a migratory sea duck
37:50whose annual flyway passes very close to Davidson.
37:52Now they migrate at this time of year.
37:54When they do,
37:56the air secretes a heavy oil
37:58onto the feathers,
38:00which makes any light area on the bird's body
38:02highly reflective.
38:04Captain, are you trying to tell us that...
38:06In our judgment,
38:08what passed over Davidson on those nights
38:10were flights of the white-winged scoter.
38:12The oily white feathers picked up the glow
38:14of the mercury vapor street lights
38:16and reflected them back
38:18in the shape of paired trapezoids,
38:20which is exactly what one looking up would see.
38:22Well, talk about razzle-dazzle cover-ups.
38:24The pulsations you saw
38:26were caused by the ducks flapping their wings.
38:28And when the lights were turned off...
38:30I've been living in Davidson all of my life,
38:32and I'm telling you,
38:34scoters never flew over here.
38:36They fly down the coast
38:38and they fly in long, stringy lines.
38:41Never like that in tight patterns like geese.
38:44Look, I've been living here for 30 years
38:46and I've never seen it either, sir.
38:48But as a professor of biology,
38:50I can tell you,
38:51scoter do sometimes fly in tight formation.
38:54Their flyway is down the coastline.
38:57But that's no superhighway in the sky.
39:00Their migratory paths vary.
39:03And with the drought and the heavy rains,
39:06it's possible...
39:08probable, in fact,
39:10that the patterns would change.
39:12Where, Captain Ryan, is any proof?
39:14I mean, where is the evidence?
39:16I think the blue book just struck out.
39:18The proof we have satisfies us, miss.
39:21Thank you, Mr. Gillette.
39:23I mean, are these not Dr. Klein's photographs,
39:25the large ones?
39:27Does anyone here see eyes or a beak?
39:33Where's Dr. John Robinson, Captain?
39:35I mean, what kind of cover-up is this?
39:37I'd like to know what Dr. Robinson has to say.
39:39What if I told you
39:41that I had five witnesses
39:43who saw more UFOs on the night of the 18th,
39:46the night the vapor lights were turned off?
39:49I'd say your witnesses were lying, Bill.
39:52Anybody who saw a UFO on the 18th
39:54would certainly have told me about it, I think.
39:59As well as the authorities and you, Bill.
40:04Captain Ryan, I'd like to thank you
40:06for trying to convince these people of the truth
40:09without going any further.
40:13I'm sorry, Captain.
40:15I don't know what to do.
40:17I don't know what to do.
40:18I'm sorry.
40:22Because, you see, there is a cover-up here.
40:27But it's my cover-up.
40:34I've known since the second night
40:36what the UFOs were
40:39because a scoter did hit the transmission tower
40:43and the apparent UFO
40:46did seem to explode
40:49and the bird fell at our feet.
40:51Dr. Klein even took some pictures
40:54and I begged her not to release them
40:56because I wanted to milk the mass hysteria
41:02of the UFO
41:04for as long as I could
41:06for my own selfish reasons.
41:14Captain Ryan has those photographs.
41:16I suspect he even has the carcass of the bird.
41:21Ladies and gentlemen,
41:23Blue Book does have the proof.
41:27Well, there goes my byline in the New York Times.
41:31Not yet. I mean...
41:33Mr. Gillette, you don't have five witnesses, do you?
41:37Nope.
41:39But didn't you ever try to run out of bluff in a poker game?
41:43Yep.
41:44And I've been nailed by the guy with better cards.
42:09Excuse me, Captain.
42:11Ryan, sir.
42:12I'm Rear Admiral Smith,
42:14retired Flying Space A.
42:16Pleased to meet you, sir.
42:18This is my partner, Sergeant Fitz.
42:20Sergeant Fitz.
42:22Admiral Smith.
42:24How are you, sir?
42:26Sergeant.
42:28I'm Black Shoe Navy,
42:30although you fellas probably can't tell
42:32with this crazy shirt I'm wearing.
42:34Far cry from gold-braided Navy blue, eh?
42:36You on vacation, sir?
42:38Extended.
42:40After ten years of humping a cruiser
42:42with some land under my feet for a while,
42:44two weeks of complete isolation in the mountains,
42:47and now I'm off to the Great Plains.
42:51I did want to ask you something tough, Captain.
42:54I'm not up to date on experimental aircraft.
42:57Does the Air Force have anything like...
43:00I'm going to reveal my age now...
43:02like the old flying wing?
43:06No, sir. It's only the X-24.
43:09It's a one-man research vehicle lifting body design.
43:12How big is that?
43:14Just about fit in the cabin with us.
43:17Well, let me tell you something.
43:19I saw the strangest thing last week.
43:24I don't know what time it was.
43:26I don't even know what day it was.
43:28Like I said, complete isolation.
43:31It was foggy, and I was playing my harmonica
43:33just before going to bed.
