00:00Foul-mouthed kids, zombie mayhem, and an actual Wolverine?
00:04Deadpool and Wolverine is packed to the brim with jokes and cameos, but there could have
00:07been way, way more.
00:09In an early Deadpool and Wolverine scene, Wade Wilson meets up with Happy Hogan in the
00:13hopes of joining the Avengers and bringing meaning to his life.
00:16The two of them discuss Tony Stark, who doesn't show up in the film, except through archival
00:20footage on the monitors at the Time Variance Authority.
00:23Including Happy was a nice touch, but a lot of people wondered if the scene was ever meant
00:26to include Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man.
00:28Is the man not going to be joining us?
00:30The man?
00:31Yeah.
00:32I should save this if he's gonna…
00:33He doesn't do this kind of thing anymore.
00:34Cameos?
00:35Meetings.
00:36Well, apparently, there was at least a chance it could have happened.
00:39Co-writer Rhett Reese told The Hollywood Reporter,
00:41"[Ryan wrote a Downey scene, and it was the two of them.
00:44And then the feeling was, if Downey either decides not to do it, or if Marvel decides
00:48not to have him do it, or for whatever reason that doesn't work out, it would then be tailored
00:52for Happy Hogan."
00:53It isn't clear exactly why the Downey Jr. cameo never materialized, but it likely had
00:57something to do with Downey Jr.'s upcoming MCU return as Dr. Doom for Avengers Doomsday.
01:02The cameos in Deadpool and Wolverine tickled just about all the sweet spots, but one notable
01:06absentee is Vinny Jones, who played the Juggernaut in 2006's X-Men The Last Stand.
01:12Juggernaut does show in Deadpool and Wolverine, but this time he's played by Aaron W. Reid.
01:16Was Jones ever set to put on the dome-shaped helmet again?
01:18According to director Sean Levy, there were talks, although they didn't last very long.
01:23Jones confirmed as much in an interview with Yahoo! in March 2024, when he revealed,
01:27"...I spoke to the director, and I just said, it's such a drama putting that suit on mentally
01:31and physically.
01:32I mean, it had its mental toll as well, because you're in it and you can't do anything all
01:35day.
01:36You can only drink through a straw."
01:37He said there were negotiations to make it happen, but ultimately, they couldn't strike
01:41a deal.
01:42I really wanted to do it, but they didn't have the budget to do, to put me in the suit.
01:49Marvel Comics fans love a good fastball special, a move invented by Wolverine and Colossus
01:53in which a super-strong hero tosses a comrade at high speed.
01:57This move made its way onto the big screen in X-Men The Last Stand, with the brawny metal
02:01X-Men hurling Logan at a Sentinel during a Danger Room training simulation.
02:04The maneuver also almost showed up again in Deadpool and Wolverine, as revealed in a behind-the-scenes
02:09video of the battle sequence in which the title heroes face off against Cassandra Nova's
02:13many goons.
02:14Ryan Reynolds posted the clip on social media and wrote in the caption,
02:17A few people asked if we were tempted to try a fastball special.
02:20The answer is yes, except instead of throwing Deadpool or Wolvie, we chucked this guy.
02:25The scene features Wade and Logan grabbing ahold of one of the nameless villains and
02:28launching him into the air, all set to the tune of Celine Dion's,
02:31"'It's All Coming Back to Me Now."
02:33It would have made for a nice full-circle moment, as Dion also memorably contributed
02:37to the Deadpool 2 soundtrack.
02:38Are they real?
02:39The boobs?
02:40Yeah, I'm a bit of an anachronist cop, but uh…
02:45Mine too.
02:46In 2019, a Change.org petition to make Danny DeVito the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Wolverine
02:51received over 63,000 signatures.
02:54So when rumors surfaced that variants could be appearing in Deadpool and Wolverine, the
02:58internet ran wild with the possibility that a DeVito-style Wolverine could become a reality.
03:02In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, co-writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese dispelled
03:06and confirmed a few rumors about what fans could have seen.
03:09Wernick mentioned that DeVito was indeed considered for the sequence that sees Deadpool traveling
03:13the multiverse and meeting the various Logan variants.
03:15He would have played the smaller, more comic-book-accurate version of the character that was ultimately
03:19achieved by putting Hugh Jackman's face on a body double.
03:22As Reese said,
03:23"'Ultimately, it was thought it was just funnier to see Hugh.
03:25A short version of Hugh was funnier, and that was inspired, obviously, other than by the
03:29comics.
03:30That was inspired by Tim Conway's Dwarf on Golf.'"
03:34Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have been glued at the hip ever since they purchased
03:37the Welsh soccer club Wrexham AFC in 2020.
03:40Now we're business partners, friends, and yes, sometimes lovers.
03:44So naturally enough, many fans speculated that McElhenney might appear in Deadpool and
03:48Wolverine, perhaps even as a Deadpool variant.
03:51The rumors of McElhenney's participation in the film did turn out to be true, though he
03:55was ultimately cast as a TVA agent rather than a variant.
03:58Unfortunately, viewers didn't get to actually see him on screen, as his scene was cut.
04:03McElhenney confirmed as much on social media when he posted a picture of himself in TVA
04:07agent attire holding Wolverine's claws while Hugh Jackman smiles at him.
04:10As he joked in the caption,
04:11"'I traveled 6,000 miles to shoot my cameo.
04:14I hope you enjoyed it because the theater I was watching in had mistakenly cut it out.'"
04:18In an interview with Variety, McElhenney said that he didn't know the exact reason why his
04:21scene was cut, but he hoped that Marvel Studios would give him and Reynolds permission to
04:25use it on Welcome to Wrexham.
04:27Percy Jackson and The Olympians star Walker Scobell collaborated with both Ryan Reynolds
04:31and Sean Levy on the 2022 sci-fi action comedy The Atom Project.
04:35During their time together, Scobell made no secret of his love for Deadpool, even showcasing
04:39his ability to quote the dialogue effortlessly.
04:41"'First, he rides my coattails with the R-rated, then the hairy motherf----- upsie anding by
04:47dying and —'
04:48"'I'm dying.
04:49I'm dying.'
04:50"'What an s----.'"
04:51He also made it clear that he wanted a part in Deadpool and Wolverine.
04:54Considering that he played a younger version of Reynolds' character in The Atom Project,
04:56it wouldn't be too hard to picture him as a younger Deadpool variant, such as Kidpool.
05:00Ultimately, though, Scobell didn't appear in Deadpool and Wolverine, as the role of
05:04Kidpool was filled by Reynolds and Blake Lively's daughter Inez.
05:08In August 2024, Levy told Entertainment Weekly that Scobell had been in the mix for Kidpool,
05:12but he outgrew the part.
05:13As the director explained,
05:14"...it was his dream.
05:16Ryan and I reached out to him once we realized he was now going to be too old, both too tall
05:20and with his voice too low.
05:21Puberty is what it is, and all the Hollywood dreams in the world can't stop it."
05:25So he did call Walker and explained why he couldn't be Kidpool, and he was completely
05:29understanding.
05:31Deadpool's debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes with a brand new, brighter suit than
05:34the one he wore in his previous big-screen adventures.
05:38He receives his new threads from a questionable tailor and demonstrates the costume's sleekness
05:41by posing seductively as an elevator door opens.
05:44However, there was a different version of the scene in the teaser trailer.
05:47In the alternate version, Wade unveils his costume's flexible qualities by doing the
05:51splits before expressing his sheer delight about the suit.
05:54Or so it seems.
05:55Maybe his joy has nothing to do with the elasticity and is perhaps instead a subtle tribute to
06:00Jean-Claude Van Damme.
06:01After all, Wade does seem like the kind of guy who would appreciate Van Damme's style.
06:05I can do the splits no problem."
06:11If we were to rank every MCU movie's opening scene, it would be hard not to put Deadpool
06:15and Wolverine at the top, thanks to Wade Wilson's inspired dance moves to the tune of NSYNC's
06:19Bye Bye Bye.
06:20Unfortunately, though, Wolverine doesn't receive the same opportunity to show off his happy
06:24feet, which is a shame considering Hugh Jackman's musical theater pedigree.
06:28However, there actually was a plan to let Jackman get footloose in a scene that didn't
06:31make it to the final cut.
06:33At a press conference promoting the film, Jackman discussed some of the wild rumors
06:36surrounding the movie, jokingly saying that Wolverine was meant to sing and dance in the
06:40nude.
06:41Ryan Reynolds chimed in to add that there actually was some truth to this, minus the
06:44nudity.
06:45As he revealed,
06:46In an earlier pitch of the film, there was a dance number with Jackman set to Elton John's
06:49— I guess that's why they call it the blues.
06:53Considering Deadpool's wacky and unpredictable nature, it should come as no surprise that
06:56he's faced off against brain-hungry zombies.
06:59Specifically, in the comic series Night of the Living Deadpool, the Merc with a Mouth
07:02finds himself in the middle of the zombie apocalypse.
07:05This was part of the Marvel Zombies subsection of the Marvel Universe, in which pretty much
07:09every character transforms into a member of the undead.
07:12And as it turns out, before Hugh Jackman returned as Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds wanted to battle
07:16some zombies in the third act of Deadpool and Wolverine.
07:19As Paul Warnick revealed to The Hollywood Reporter,
07:21He pitched this idea of Deadpool versus zombies, and he pitched this final scene — the climax
07:25of the movie being Deadpool — going down the line into Madonna's like a prayer and
07:29wantonly killing zombies.
07:31As the script progressed, the zombie concept developed into the big battle against the
07:34Deadpool Corps.
07:35However, a piece of Reynolds' original plan remained intact, as the Corps includes a bodiless
07:40zombie variant known as Headpool, who's voiced by Nathan Fillion.
07:43Hold your fire!
07:46After Wade Wilson and Logan escape from Elias' wrath and traverse the Void to look for members
07:50of the Resistance, Wolverine sniffs out an abandoned diner where they stop for some food
07:54and drink.
07:55It's a memorable scene, but the final cut lacks a hilarious part that appeared in a
07:58trailer released on Best Friends Day.
07:59You mind putting your mask back on?
08:01It's super hard to eat while I'm wearing it.
08:03It's super hard to eat when you're not.
08:05Then, for what appears to be the first time in his life, Wade is speechless.
08:09The exchange allows Logan to hit Wade with an absolute zinger.
08:11Ultimately, though, it's not like this moment is sorely missed in the final version, as
08:15Wolverine has more than enough opportunities to deliver plenty of verbal jabs elsewhere.
08:20Deadpool and Wolverine pulls out of all the stops with its parade of cameos.
08:24With Wesley Snipes as Blade, Chris Evans as Johnny Storm, Jennifer Garner as Elektra,
08:28Daphne Keene as X-23, and Channing Tatum's debut as Gambit, there's no shortage of mind-blowing
08:33surprise appearances.
08:34I think I'm about to make a name for myself here.
08:37But even with that thorough lineup, comic book movie fans' thirst for cameos can never
08:41be fully quenched.
08:42So there were a lot of people who were wondering where in the world Nicolas Cage was as Ghost
08:46Rider in the midst of all this chaos.
08:48In an interview with Collider, Ryan Reynolds confirmed that Deadpool and Wolverine indeed
08:51planned to uncage Johnny Blaze and let the spirit of vengeance ride once more.
08:55While Reynolds remained coy about the finer details about why it didn't happen, he did
08:59offer,
09:00"...it came to a conversation, for sure.
09:01Yeah, but no."
09:03And this cameo may actually have been closer to reality than you might imagine, as evidenced
09:07by poster concept art that Rodney Fuentembea made for Deadpool and Wolverine and posted
09:11on his Instagram.
09:12It features Deadpool, Wolverine, Blade, Elektra, the Human Torch, and Ghost Rider battling
09:17against a horde of Deadpool variants.
09:19And among the multitude of red costumes, eagle-eyed fans can also spot another familiar face — Ben
09:24Affleck's Daredevil.
09:26Deadpool's search for the perfect Wolverine variant sees him encountering a number of
09:29different Logans, who viciously beat him up along the way.
09:32But it turns out these multiversal battles could have taken another radical turn if there
09:35had just been a little more time available.
09:38During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Sean Levy explained how everyone
09:42grappled with the decision over which specific variants to choose for the scene.
09:45There was one idea that they all particularly liked, but they ran out of time to actually
09:49put it in the final product.
09:51As Levy recalled,
09:52We really, really wanted an actual Wolverine, the animal, and that he would maul Deadpool,
09:56but we came up with that idea too late to do a convincing digital Wolverine.
10:00So that one's in my back pocket, should I need one for any sequels.
