00:00-"You're in that movie?" -"No! I was!"
00:04Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for film appearances
00:08that were pitilessly left on the cutting room floor.
00:10-"I don't smell trash and feces. I smell pain."
00:21Imagine Aragorn himself, Viggo Mortensen, making an appearance in a whimsical Woody Allen film,
00:26only for his scenes to be cut completely.
00:29Well, that's unfortunately what happened, as Viggo Mortensen's early acting gig
00:33was unceremoniously taken out of the film The Purple Rose of Cairo.
00:36-"What a shame. It was such a good picture."
00:39Mortensen has gone on to describe his time on set as particularly strange,
00:43saying he wasn't given any direction at all.
00:46However, he gave it his best shot.
00:48Unfortunately, once the film was released, he sadly learned he didn't make the cut.
00:53It's a shame, as the cameo would have certainly given fans a sneak peek into his burgeoning talent.
00:58-"Is knowing how to set a broken bone or how to treat severe burn ridiculous?
01:01Knowing how to navigate by the stars in total darkness, that's ridiculous?"
01:10Given that Batman v Superman's theatrical cut ran approximately two and a half hours,
01:15it's understandable that some scenes and characters would be removed.
01:18However, many were incredibly disappointed when Jenna Malone as scientist Janet Clyburn
01:23was cut from the final edit.
01:26-"And this is what makes you such a good reporter.
01:29Stuff like this still shocks you."
01:31Known for her roles in The Hunger Games and Pride and Prejudice,
01:35Malone's performance was rather anticipated,
01:37but her scenes only appeared in the ultimate edition of the film.
01:41Her absence left fans feeling shortchanged, however,
01:44as they missed out on what could have been a valuable addition to the film's impressive cast.
01:48Maybe if she'd played a character named Martha, she would have made the cut.
01:51-"Save Martha!"
01:56Paul Rudd, Bridesmaids
01:58-"What? You were on the show? I love that show!
02:01Oh my God, how did I miss your episode? Which one was it?"
02:03-"It didn't air."
02:04If you're a fan of the ageless Paul Rudd, and frankly, who isn't,
02:07then this cameo removal surely stung.
02:10Known for his impeccable comedic timing, improv skills, and charm,
02:14-"60% of the time, it works every time."
02:18Rudd seemed perfect for the Paul Feig-directed comedy Bridesmaids.
02:21Sadly, all of Rudd's scenes ended up being cut from the final version.
02:26Due to the film's length.
02:27The affable actor's cameo would have seen him in a date gone wrong
02:31opposite Kristen Wiig's Annie at a skating rink.
02:33His nice guy act would be proven a facade when he accidentally cuts a finger with an ice skate.
02:38-"What happened? What happened to you?"
02:39-"My shoulder stings."
02:40-"Oh, you see? It's a big deal.
02:42This is bleeding! It's bleeding! It's bleeding!"
02:47It was a true missed opportunity for comedy gold from Rudd.
02:51Number 7, Sienna Miller, Black Mass
02:54Celebrated actress Sienna Miller had originally filmed scenes
02:57for the Johnny Depp-starring biographical mob film Black Mass,
03:00where she played Catherine Gregg.
03:02As the girlfriend and accomplice to notorious gangster Whitey Bulger,
03:06this surely would have been a great addition to Miller's impressive filmography, right?
03:10Thanks to, quote,
03:11narrative restructuring,
03:13her small role was removed.
03:15Apparently, the filmmakers wanted to focus more tightly on Bulger's criminal activities
03:19rather than his time with Catherine,
03:21which were, quote,
03:21less dramatic.
03:22-"What's your neighborhood, Whitey? Is that right?"
03:25-"What we will make."
03:26The exclusion felt particularly harsh, however,
03:29as Miller's performance reportedly brought further depth and nuance to Bulger's complex life.
03:34And, according to several critics,
03:36the film could have certainly used it.
03:39-"I thought it was a family secret."
03:46-"It's a recipe."
03:47-"No. No."
03:51Number 6.
03:52Jack Whitehall.
03:53Frozen.
03:54-"It's technically my second Disney film."
03:56-"You've been... Sorry."
03:57-"Well, I was actually in Frozen, so..."
03:59-"Oh."
04:00-"Yeah, well, just hold that.
04:02Uh, hold that thought."
04:04He's still not over it, folks.
04:06British comedian Jack Whitehall was reportedly extremely excited about his role in Disney's 2013 animated hit Frozen,
04:13believing he delivered his lines, quote,
04:15perfectly.
04:15-"I had one line. I had one line."
04:17-"Could you do it? We were all waiting. Can you do it tonight?"
04:20-"Yeah."
04:21-"I troll-fully pronounce you man and wife."
04:24-"Whoa!"
04:26He proudly told everyone he knew about his part and eagerly went to the theater to hear himself on screen.
04:31However, when he watched, his character, a troll named Gothi, was about to speak,
04:35but was cut off by Anna's song.
04:37-"I was shouting at the screen, Jimmy. I was like,
04:39"'Oi! Excuse me! Elsa! Zip it, b****! Gothi had something to say!'
04:43Confused, he called his agent, who revealed that Disney had reduced his role.
04:47-"He goes, "'Hey kid, calm down. You gotta just let it go.'
04:50I was like, "'Don't give me let it go!'
04:52"'Don't! Don't! Don't say let it go!'
04:55"'Don't you dare!''
04:58A frustrated Whitehall said his agent then told him to, quote,
05:01"'Let it go.'"
05:02But he clearly hasn't.
05:04-"Let it go, let it go.
05:07I am one with the wind and sky.
05:11Let it go, let it go."
05:18Yep, you heard that right.
05:20Harrison Ford was to appear in Steven Spielberg's sci-fi classic, E.T.
05:24Heck, he even filmed all his scenes.
05:26-"I see you find young people from good homes,
05:31every advantage your whole life laid out in front of you."
05:36Ford played Elliot's school principal, but sadly, it was all for naught.
05:40Spielberg himself says the decision was a very tough one
05:43given his working relationship with Ford.
05:45-"Snakes? Why did it have to be snakes?"
05:49And while he says he did what was right for the film, the cut still stings.
06:03Ford's unique appearance would have definitely added gravitas to the picture,
06:06considering his immense popularity at the time.
06:09However, we suppose when you've got that much star power,
06:12it can overshadow the rest of the film,
06:14even if it is just a cameo.
06:33Deadpool and Wolverine is celebrated in part for its plethora of amazing cameos.
06:38Unfortunately, not everyone made the final cut.
06:42However, Rob McElhenney's cameo, which was set to reunite him
06:45with his Welcome to Wrexham co-star and friend Ryan Reynolds,
06:48is perhaps the most brutal axing.
06:54Despite flying to London to film his scenes,
06:56McElhenney's appearance was removed because, as Reynolds explained,
07:00quote,
07:03In a behind-the-scenes image shared on social media,
07:06McElhenney can be seen dressed as a TVA soldier,
07:09hinting at what could have been.
07:10Here's hoping that his appearance features in some sort of future director's cut.
07:21A major player in the Spider-Man mythos is Mary Jane Watson,
07:25and the actresses who have played the role on film have been
07:27Kirsten Dunst, Zendaya, and Shailene Woodley.
07:31Er, scratch that last one.
07:32You see, the Divergent series heroine was originally cast as MJ
07:35in the sequel to the Andrew Garfield-led Spider-Man franchise.
07:41That's all they talk about every day these days.
07:44However, filmmakers decided to streamline the story
07:47to focus solely on Peter and Gwen Stacy's arc instead.
07:50I didn't get love back last night.
07:51I got more of a want to kill me with his electricity vibe.
07:54That's actually kind of what it's like to love you.
07:56This meant the MJ cameos would be scrapped altogether.
07:59While Woodley says she understands the reasons behind it,
08:02it no doubt broke the hearts of countless comic book fans
08:05who wanted to see the beloved character on screen again.
08:07It really didn't make sense to introduce such a vital character
08:10to the comic books in a movie that had so much else going on.
08:14Number two, Mickey Rourke, The Thin Red Line.
08:17The Terrence Malick-helmed World War II epic The Thin Red Line
08:20features an absolutely stellar ensemble cast
08:23that includes the likes of Sean Penn, Nick Nolte,
08:26George Clooney, and Adrian Brody, among others.
08:30You've been in the army, what, six years now?
08:33Ain't no bad time you smartened up and stopped being such a punk recruit.
08:36However, other prominent actors were meant to be featured in the film,
08:40but had their scenes reduced or removed.
08:42Mickey Rourke was one of them, and he was none too pleased about it.
08:46Rourke was particularly offended as he believed he gave some of his best work during filming.
08:51The actor was also quoted as saying he believed the axing was over, quote,
08:54political reasons.
08:56I don't think you understand what's going on down here, sir.
08:58To say it left a sour taste in the actor's mouth would be an understatement.

09:23The DC Universe faced turbulent times amid shifts in direction and leadership
09:27behind the scenes prior to the release of 2023's The Flash.
09:30The film would ultimately serve as a love letter to on-screen DC characters of yore
09:35and feature some surprising cameos.
09:40The Flash
09:47Two highly anticipated cameos, however, were ultimately cut amid the corporate restructuring.
09:52Superhero A-listers Wonder Woman and Superman, played by Gal Gadot and Henry Cavill respectively,
09:58ended up on the chopping block.
09:59The filmed cameos were reportedly to appear at the movie's close.
10:03Alas, the last-minute axing resulted in further disappointment and disillusionment for DC loyalists.
10:09You're not Batman.
