00:00You've seen the news by now. Doom is now the villain for Avengers 5, and he's
00:05being played by a really familiar face. The film now has a fresh title, new
00:12directors, and a confirmed villain. But what's really got everyone buzzing is
00:17who's playing the villain. At Marvel's Comic-Con panel, it was announced that
00:21Joe and Anthony Russo are back to direct Avengers Doomsday and Avengers Secret
00:26Wars. And the real jaw-dropper is that Robert Downey Jr. is returning, but not
00:31as Iron Man. He's stepping into the role of Doctor Doom. The Russos are taking
00:37over from Destin Daniel Cretton, who left the movie in November 2023. Michael
00:41Waldron, who's also working on Avengers Secret Wars, is now writing for this
00:45movie too, taking over from Jeff Loveness. Back in February 2024, news broke that
00:51Marvel was reworking Avengers 5, ditching the title Avengers The King
00:55Dynasty. Jonathan Majors, who played Kang, was dropped by Marvel in December 2023
01:00after being found guilty of assault and harassment. Avengers Doomsday is the
01:05first part of a double feature that will wrap up the multiverse saga. But before
01:10we dive into Secret Wars, there's a lot to sort out with Avengers 5. In June
01:152023, Marvel pushed back the release of Avengers Doomsday to May 1st 2026, a year
01:22later than its original May 2nd 2025 date. This shift also moved Avengers
01:26Secret Wars from May 5th 2026 to May 7th 2027. Now for the big news, Robert Downey
01:34Jr. is confirmed to play Doctor Doom in Avengers 5. We're not sure how this will
01:39all fit together yet, but it's possible this Doctor Doom could be from the same
01:43universe as the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. As mentioned, Jonathan Majors is
01:48officially out as Kang, so he won't be reprising his role. Kang was set up as
01:53the new Big Bad of the MCU, but with Downey Jr. taking on Doctor Doom, it
01:58seems Kang might not be coming back. Marvel could still recast him though.
02:02Another familiar face returning to the MCU to write the screenplay for
02:06Avengers Doomsday is Stephen McFeely. He's previously co-written six of
02:11Marvel's biggest hits, including Infinity War and Endgame, and co-created the
02:16short-lived series Agent Carter with his writing partner Christopher Markus.
02:19However, this time he's flying solo for the franchise.
02:23McFeely recently teamed up with the Russo brothers again as a screenwriter
02:27for their 2022 Netflix original The Gray Man, and worked with them as a producer
02:32on the 2023 sequel to Extraction, starring Thor's Chris Hemsworth. But who
02:37will be part of the Avengers team in Avengers Doomsday to take on Doctor Doom?
02:42The original Avengers team is almost entirely gone. Black Widow and Iron Man
02:46are dead, Captain America is an old man, and Thor is busy with his foster daughter.
02:51At Comic-Con, Kevin Feige dropped some exciting news. The casts of The
02:56Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, and Captain America Brave New World will all be part
03:00of the next two Avengers movies. So we can certainly infer that Anthony Mackie's
03:05Sam Wilson might be leading the team. And don't forget we still have heroes like
03:10Spider-Man, Valkyrie, War Machine, Winter Soldier, and Doctor Strange in the MCU.
03:15There might even be more than one Avengers team, especially since the MCU
03:19seems to be gearing up for the Young Avengers. Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop
03:24joined the MCU in the Disney Plus show Hawkeye, and now that TV shows are more
03:28integrated into the universe, it looks like they're setting the stage for the
03:32Young Avengers. Steinfeld reprised her role at the end of the Marvels, and
03:37Kamala Khan seems to be paving the way for the Young Avengers, so they could
03:41definitely have a role in the next Avengers movie. Chris Hemsworth's Thor is
03:45also expected to appear in some capacity. In a Wired interview back in June 2022,
03:50Hemsworth hinted at future projects. Reflecting on the franchise's early days,
03:55he said, I didn't really know, none of us did, if it was gonna work, or if there was
04:00gonna be an extension beyond that first film into Thor 2, 3, 4, or Avengers 1, 2,
04:053, 4, 5. It was all just an idea and a dream, and one that I was on board with.
04:10Sounds like he signed up for more to us. Initially, Ant-Man and the Wasp,
04:15Quantumania, seemed to be setting up Kang as a major villain. The Kang we met in
04:20the Quantum Realm appeared to be crushed to death, but the mid-credits scene
04:24revealed a whole council of Kang's, including the big bad, Immortus. He
04:29rallied them with, they will take everything we built, so let's stop
04:33wasting time. We thought this was the direction the new movie would take, but
04:37with Jonathan Majors's departure and the introduction of Doctor Doom, it looks
04:41like Avengers 5 will take a completely different path. What we do know is that
04:46it's all leading up to Secret Wars. Right now, it's not clear if Robert Downey Jr.
04:51is playing a Dark Iron Man variant who becomes Doctor Doom, or if he's taking on
04:56a more traditional version of Doom. However, bringing RDJ back as a villain
05:00likely connected to Tony Stark in some way. After all, an evil Iron Man would be
05:05exactly how many fans might see it. This might be Marvel's plan, making the idea
05:10of an Iron Man Doom variant just as plausible as a straightforward Doctor
05:14Doom. During the big reveal at SDCC, RDJ emerged from a group of Dooms on stage
05:21before taking off his mask in Hall H. This could have been Marvel's flair for
05:25showmanship, maybe hinting at Doom's Doombot soldiers from the comics. But it
05:30might also tease RDJ's Doctor Doom leading his own army of Doom variants
05:34from across the multiverse, similar to the Council of Kings set up in
05:38Quantumania. In the comics, armies of Doctor Dooms from different universes
05:43have appeared multiple times. One notable example is the Parliament of Doom, which
05:48followed a Doom wielding two Infinity Gauntlets, though he was eventually
05:52overthrown. More recently, Jason Aaron's Avengers Assembly crossover featured an
05:57army of Dooms led by Doom Supreme, who aimed to remake the multiverse in their
06:01image. So an RDJ-played Dark Iron Man variant makes a lot of sense if
06:07Avengers 5 involves legions of Dooms coming together, much like the Council of
06:11Kings was meant to. But even a single Doctor Doom is a formidable foe. Doctor
06:16Doom is one of the most compelling villains in the Marvel Universe, making
06:20his MCU debut, especially with RDJ playing him, something to get really
06:25excited about. The anticipation for the Avengers long-awaited return has been
06:31immense. With the news that Robert Downey Jr. is coming back in a new, darker role
06:35in Avengers Doomsday, our anticipation is through the roof. What about you?
