00:05APPLAUSE
00:31Good afternoon, good afternoon, and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:35Now, if it's design inspiration year after,
00:38you've got ten days to head on down to London to the Ideal Home Show
00:41at Earls Court, closes on the 30th.
00:44Incredible. It's been running for 106 years and everything's there.
00:48All the home tips, turning your loft into an extra bedroom,
00:51your garden into something else, your garage into something else again.
00:55Extraordinary. Stand after stand on, I guess, style and living.
01:01And when it comes to contemporary or traditional, I don't know.
01:05I'm more old-fashioned, as you would expect.
01:08How about you? Do you prefer contemporary buildings
01:11and style and furniture and furnishings?
01:13I think it depends what house you've got.
01:15If you've got a modern house, you tend to put modern stuff in it.
01:18If you've got a period house, you put period stuff in it.
01:21You're right. I've always lived in old houses, actually.
01:24Now, who have we got with us today?
01:26We've got Cliff Lee back with us now on Two Winds
01:29after beating Peter Johnson 93-40.
01:32Casino man from the West End, big lover of London's royal parks.
01:37I'm surprised you ever get a chance to see them
01:39because you work crazy hours, Cliff.
01:42Well, I go running sometimes before or after work around the park,
01:46especially early in the morning.
01:48Not followed by a lot of characters who've lost their money at your place?
01:51No.
01:52All right, and you're joined today by Tom Dixon,
01:54an accounts assistant from Newmill, Homeforth.
01:57Is that how we pronounce it, Homeforth?
01:59Sounds about right, Nick.
02:01All right, and a big Huddersfield Town fan,
02:03loves his hometown of Homeforth.
02:05Very proud Yorkshireman, is that right?
02:07Indeed, yeah.
02:08Well, good luck to you. Good luck to you both.
02:11So, Tom and Cliff, big round of applause, please.
02:15And over in the corner, Susie, of course,
02:19joined for his final day with us today.
02:23Yes.
02:24The great Tim Vine.
02:26Comedian, but also acting, and acting very well
02:29in that great show, Blandings,
02:31alongside Harry Enfield, Jennifer Saunders,
02:34Timothy Spall in that P.G. Woodhouse BBC One show.
02:37He's doing well.
02:38Yeah, well, it's been great fun doing it.
02:40I was quite nervous the very first scene I did with Timothy Spall
02:43because I'm not really an actor, as such.
02:45In this scene, I had to walk up with a tray and say,
02:47very good, my lord.
02:48And I thought, I can't mess this up.
02:50That's all I've got to say.
02:51And I managed to say, very gawd, my lord.
02:54He's a great actor, he's a lovely actor.
02:56Yes, great, very nice chap as well.
02:58You know, you're talking about the home exhibition.
03:00I went there to buy a standard lamp,
03:02and when it was delivered to me,
03:04they've got this, I said, well, will you give me this?
03:06And on the box it said, it comes as a pair.
03:11Ridiculous. Lovely stuff.
03:13But now, serious business.
03:15Cliff, off you go. Letters game.

04:43What?
04:44Yeah.
04:45Very good.
04:46Nebula, what's that?
04:47Don't know what it means.
04:48No.
04:49Have we got better than that somewhere?
04:50It's a cloud of dust and gas in the sky.
04:52You can see it at night time.
04:53Oh, I see.
04:54A cloud of dust and stuff.
04:55So, what have you got there, then?
04:57Just one more eight. Tangible.
04:59Tangible. Of course. Tangible. Well done.

06:20Mooned?
06:21Yes.
06:23Mooned, indeed.
06:24Erm, cheeky.
06:25I, er...
06:27I've got door.
06:28There's a lot of hinging on that, but, er...
06:30It's all right.
06:31Shut it.
06:32LAUGHTER
06:33But there's actually an eight there involving door.
06:35Yes. Susie?
06:36Oh, there's a seven involving a door, which is a doorman.
06:39Oh, seven.
06:40And an eight not involving doors, which is marooned.
06:43Marooned.

06:46Very good.
06:4840 all for Cliff.

07:00Six, two, seven,
07:03another six and five.
07:06And the target to reach, 281.
07:08281.
07:34MUSIC STOPS
07:41Well, Cliff?
07:42Too awful.
07:43How about Tom?
07:44Two, seven, seven.
07:45So, Tom, in that case, tell us what you've got and how you got there.
07:49Erm, six times five equals 30.
07:51Six times five is 30.
07:53Seven plus two is nine.
07:55Yep.
07:56Times 30 is 270.
07:58Yep.
07:59And add on the seven.
08:00And add on the other seven. Two, seven, seven.
08:02Two, seven, seven.
08:04Rachel, 281.
08:06Er, yes, you could have said six times seven is 42.
08:10Minus two is 40.
08:12Times by the other seven is 280.
08:15And then you've got another six left.
08:17Five for one to add on for 281.
08:19Very good. Well done, Rachel.
08:21APPLAUSE
08:23So, a bit of a lead there for Tom.
08:2521 to Cliff's 14 as we turn to a teatime teaser,
08:28which is Late Tram.
08:29The tram and the clue.
08:30The tram might be late, but you shouldn't abuse the driver.
08:34The tram might be late, but you shouldn't abuse the driver.
08:46APPLAUSE
08:52Welcome back. I left you the clue.
08:54The tram might be late, but you shouldn't abuse the driver.
08:58And the answer is you shouldn't maltreat him.
09:00Maltreat him.

10:17Eight.
10:18Tom?
10:19Cried.
10:20And, Cliff?
10:21Grouched.
10:22Grouched.
10:23Such good words.
10:24Grouchy.
10:25Grouch means to grouch, to voice one's discontent ill-temperedly.
10:30It's to grouch, to grumble, in other words.
10:32Very good.
10:37Don't be such a grouch.
10:39Now, Tim.
10:40Yes, well, I got rogue, and I wonder whether you could have rogued...
10:44It wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference to the scores.
10:47It's only a six if it's allowed.
10:49But for me, it'd be a personal triumph.
10:52Yeah, you can.
10:54I'll tell you what I think it means.
10:56It's to remove inferior or defective plants or seedlings from a crop.
11:00Yeah, of course it is, yeah.
11:02That's what I had a feeling it was, to remove that, seedlings, etc.
11:06Well done, Tim. Lovely.
11:07And that was only six, but have you got something else there?
11:10Coughed for seven.
11:11Coughed.
11:12Coughed.
11:13Coughed.
11:14Cough it up.

12:26Tom?
12:27Only a six.
12:28And that's six.
12:29Ravens.
12:30Ravens.
12:31Cliff?
12:32Surname.
12:33Surname.
12:34Excellent.
12:35Very good, yes.
12:36Yeah, very good.
12:37Surname is one that Susie got as well.
12:39We also had manures.
12:40Seven.
12:41Manures, not bad.
12:4229 to 21.
12:43Cliff in the lead.
12:44Tom, your numbers game.
12:46Can I have one large and five small, please?
12:48You can, thank you, Tom.
12:49We've got five out of the other ones.
12:51And for this round, the numbers are...
13:00And the target, 660.
13:02660.
13:19CLOCK TICKS
13:36Tom?
13:38Erm, 660.
13:40Cliff?
13:41660.
13:43Tom?
13:44Nine times 75 is 675.
13:46975, 675.
13:48Six is 18.
13:50Yep.
13:51Take that away.
13:52Take it away for 657.
13:56And add on the eight.
13:58And...
13:59Oh, no, that's gone wrong.
14:00Add on the eight and take away the five.
14:02Add on the eight, take away the five. Lovely.
14:04Well done.
14:05Cliff?
14:06975.
14:07975, 675.
14:09And then five times three is 15.
14:11Yep, well done.
14:13660.
14:14Very good.
14:15APPLAUSE
14:18Close one thing here, 39 to Tom's 31,
14:20but now we turn nervously to Tim Vine.
14:24Tim?
14:25Yes, I know the feeling.
14:26But, you know, I was at a cashpoint machine the other day,
14:28I put my credit card in, and it said authorising.
14:31I looked round, there was JK Rowling going up in a hot air balloon.
14:34She was authorising.
14:36Look it up.
14:38Authorising.
14:39I can leave longer pauses if that'll help you.
14:41But I think it's important in life to push yourself, isn't it?
14:44Unless, of course, you've broken down in your car,
14:46you will need someone to do the steering for you.
14:49But, you know, I...
14:51An extraordinary thing happened the other day.
14:53I was parked on the side of a hill,
14:55and suddenly I was overtaken by three trees,
14:57a bollard, and a woman screaming,
14:58put your handbrake on.
15:00When you watch television sometimes,
15:02do you not think to yourself...
15:03When they say stunts, they have their stunts,
15:05and you think, well, they say, do not try this at home.
15:07But what we want, don't we, viewers,
15:08we want some easy stunts that we can do at home.
15:11And that's why in my book,
15:12the Tim Vine bumper book of silliness, there it is,
15:14is there are some easy stunts you can do at home.
15:16Let's have a look at some of them, shall we?
15:18Here's one here.
15:19Hoovering with one eye closed.
15:22Open a door just using your foot.
15:25Hold your hand in the fridge for one minute.
15:27That's quite a hard one, that one.
15:29Really, really gently tap one of your teeth with a rolling pin.
15:32I mean, there's loads of these.
15:34We could really go on for a lot longer than I'm willing to right now.
15:37But the other thing that I think is important to do
15:40is dot-to-dot.
15:41And here we are, dot-to-dot for beginners.
15:43There you are, join the dots to draw a washing line.
15:46Join the dots to draw the London to Glasgow train line.
15:50And join the dots to draw some Raivita.
15:53LAUGHTER
15:55There we are.
15:56But I'll just leave you with this.
15:58I was in the car with my girlfriend,
16:00we stopped at some traffic lights,
16:02and who should put alongside but a jeep being driven by a panda?
16:06And as he came up alongside, he knocked off a wing mirror.
16:09So I lent out, I said,
16:10''You clipped us?'' He said, ''No, thanks. You got any bamboo?''
16:13LAUGHTER
16:14End of anecdotes.
16:16Very good.
16:21Lovely stuff, lovely stuff.
16:22Cliff, letters game.

19:05Colder.
19:06And?
19:07Caloried.
19:08Caloried.
19:10I was thinking exactly the same thing,
19:12whether you could add the D to calorie,
19:14and unfortunately you can't.
19:16It's just there as a noun.
19:17Sorry, Cliff.
19:18Bad luck.
19:19But what can we have?
19:20Radical.
19:21One more seven.
19:22Radical with the CLE ending
19:24rather than the normal radical that we think about.
19:27It's a botanical term,
19:28and it's the part of a plant embryo
19:30that develops into the primary root.
19:32Very good.
19:35And that's it?
19:36That's it.
19:37That's quite enough.

23:03And you've only got two.
23:04Oh, yeah.
23:05Bad luck.
23:06It's the right spelling, though, Tom.
23:07Bad luck.
23:08Yeah.
23:09Good shot, good shot.
23:10And in the corner...
23:12Got isolates.
23:13Are there enough S's?
23:14Yes, there are enough S's.
23:15Isolates.
23:16That was one of Susie's special, that one.
23:18Very good.
23:19Eight.
23:20Anything else?
23:21Tassel for six.
23:22Tassel.
23:23Perfect.
23:24Well done.
23:25Seven. Cliff.
23:26Letters game.
23:27Consonant, please, Rachel.
23:28Thank you, Cliff.
23:29T.
23:30And another.
23:32D.
23:33Another.
23:35P.
23:36And a vowel.
23:39E.
23:40Another vowel, please.
23:41O.
23:43Another vowel.
23:45I.
23:47Consonant.
23:49F.
23:50Consonants.
23:52T.
23:56And a consonant.
23:57And lastly, N.
23:59Clock time.
24:01CLOCK TICKS
24:25CLOCK TICKS
24:31Cliff.
24:32Seven, but it's not written down.
24:34What about Tom?
24:35So far, seven as well.
24:36Right.
24:37Cliff.
24:38Pointed.
24:39N.
24:40Same.
24:41Same.
24:42Have a little look there, Cliff.
24:43Lovely.
24:44Happy.
24:45And in the corner, what have we got there?
24:46Tim, Susie.
24:47Well, Susie found a very good seven of tiptoed.
24:50Yep.
24:51I saw potted. I think potted was in there.
24:53It's potted.
24:54A six.
24:55Reminds me of when I went to the garden centre
24:57and I said, what do you call those flowers from Amsterdam?
24:59He said, tulips.
25:00I said, what do you call those flowers from Amsterdam?
25:02LAUGHTER
25:04Thank you, Tim.
25:06Anything else?
25:07No.
25:08That's quite enough.
25:09Thank you very much.
25:10All right.
25:1170 plays, Tom's 54.
25:13As we look to you, Susie,
25:15and your wonderful origins of words.
25:18Prepare to be amazed, Tim.
25:20I'm going to. Prepare.
25:21I'm not sure about that.
25:22But you might remember a little while ago
25:24I told you about how once upon a time
25:27sons of local families would have lessons,
25:30would take lessons with the sons of the royal family
25:34to keep them company and maybe to spur them on
25:37if there was a little bit of competition.
25:39But if one of them did something wrong,
25:41particularly if the prince, the royal prince,
25:43did something wrong, it was against the law
25:46for him to be punished.
25:48And so the poor local boy,
25:50even if he'd done absolutely nothing wrong at all,
25:52would be punished, often quite harshly, instead.
25:55And he was the original whipping boy.
25:58And it got me thinking about Minions,
26:00because I don't know if you've seen the film Despicable Me, Nick.
26:03No.
26:04It's a kids' film. It's very, very good.
26:06And Minions in the film are not the kind of subservient people
26:11that we think of today,
26:12but they're lovable, cylindrical, yellow creatures.
26:15And they approach the world with a great sense of fun
26:18and wide-eyed innocence.
26:20And they're treated, importantly, with great respect and appreciation
26:23by their mastermind, their boss, Gru.
26:27And you might think that gives a new definition to Minion,
26:30to make them someone appealing and someone nice,
26:32but actually it goes right back to the early times
26:35when a Minion was a king's favourite subject.
26:38And it could even be his lover. It was such an endearing term.
26:41And it comes from the French mignon, meaning cute or sweet.
26:44And for centuries after, Minion was a term of endearment.
26:47It's a little bit like bully.
26:49Bully in Shakespeare's time meant friend or a lover as well.
26:54So that's flipped as well.
26:55And it wasn't until the 18th century that Minion began to turn up
26:58in a negative light, probably because of jealousy for a teacher's pet.
27:03You know, that sort of hatred.
27:05But we need to watch this space, because you never know,
27:07Despicable Me might have turned it round again.
27:09Whipping Boy will always be a whipping boy,
27:11but I'm not sure about Minions. They might become nice.
27:13Very good. Well done. Lovely.
27:1670k, 54, Tom. Letters game.

28:31Upstager.
28:33Upstager.
28:36Are you happy with that, Susie?
28:38Upstage, definitely, Ian.
28:40Extraordinary.
28:43While you're looking for that, I can say that repeats was there for 7.
28:47And also, repeats was there for 7.
28:52I'm really sadly, because it would have been fantastic,
28:55upstager is not there. You can't be an upstager,
28:57at least not in the dictionary.
28:59Crucial moment for both of you two.
29:01Very good. Anything else?
29:04We had pasture and reputes as well.
29:07And repeats is there for 7.

30:21Cliff.
30:22Janitor.
30:23Tom.
30:24Brandiest.
30:25Brandiest.
30:26Oh, great word, but no S.
30:28Oh, Tom.
30:29I haven't written down one.
30:31Oh.
30:32I had Cliff a little bit rattled there for a second, I think.
30:35Now then, the corner. What news?
30:37I think it's ironic that we get to the end of the week
30:40and I'm just beginning to get the hang of this.
30:43I have offered, entirely under my own steam and intellect,
30:46you know, grasping around for it,
30:48Ordinate. Eight.
30:50Well done.
30:51Ordinate. Brilliant.
30:53I got that one, did you?
30:55Very good.
30:57Repeats is there for seven.
30:59LAUGHTER
31:01What else have we got?
31:03What else have you got there, Susie?
31:05Ordinate was brilliant. Rationed and derationed.
31:08All right, 77 plays 54.
31:10We're into the final knockings of this countdown show.
31:15Numbers for Tom.
31:17Can I have one large and five small, please?
31:19You can indeed, thank you, Tom.
31:21One large, one five, little ones, four, the last time today.
31:24And these numbers are four, one, four, two, six,
31:29and the large one, 100.
31:31And the target, 527.
31:34527.
32:05Yes, Tom?
32:07529.
32:08Sorry, nine.
32:10And Cliff?
32:12526.
32:14526. So, Cliff?
32:17100 plus six.
32:19100 plus six, 106.
32:21Four plus one is five.
32:23Yeah.
32:24Multiply those.
32:25Well, 530.
32:26Take away the other four.
32:28And take away the four, for one away, 526. Well done.
32:30Well done. But, Rachel, down to you.
32:33You could have said two times four is eight.
32:36Add the other four is 12.
32:39100 minus 12 is 88.
32:42Multiply that by six for 528 and take away the one for 527.
32:46Yes, brilliant.
32:48Well done, Rachel.
32:50As ever.
32:52So, as we go into the final round, conundrum time,
32:56it's 84 to Tom's 54.
32:58So, gentlemen, Cliff, Tom, fingers on buzzers,
33:01let's reveal today's countdown conundrum.
33:08Tom?
33:10Punishing.
33:12Punishing.
33:13Very rapid. Let's have a look.
33:16Good man.
33:18Very good.
33:22Well done.
33:23Very good indeed. Pretty close-run thing, actually.
33:2584 to 64, Tom.
33:27You kept his score down, I think.
33:29Very well done indeed.
33:31But it's Cliff's day and so it's back to Home Firth
33:35with your goody bag and our very best wishes.
33:37Thank you very much.
33:39Brilliant stuff. Cliff, we'll see you tomorrow.
33:41You're having a good old run now. That's three wins.
33:44I struggled on that one.
33:46Do you know, these scores are slipping down gently.
33:48Soon I'll get it going back the other way.
33:50Early to bed tonight. We'll see you tomorrow.
33:53See Susie tomorrow, but sadly we have to release Tim
33:56so that he can get back into the wild.
33:58Oh, well, that's true. I've got to go to Melbourne.
34:00No, you've got to be there. You've got to polish up some of those jokes
34:03before you confront the Australian audience in Melbourne next week.
34:06Well, exactly. That's what I'm hoping to do.
34:08And I understand next week this seat's going to be taken up
34:11by a singer who navigates at the same time. It's Tom Tom Jones.
34:16Actually, it's not. It's our very own Maureen Lipman
34:19we'll be welcoming tomorrow.
34:21So she'll be in your chair tomorrow.
34:23Anyway, have a great trip and a great success in Australia.
34:27Excellent stuff. See you tomorrow.
34:29See you tomorrow. Rachel, see you tomorrow.
34:31See you tomorrow.
34:32Join us tomorrow, see how Cliff Lee is getting on
34:34and welcome the wonderful Maureen Lipman.
34:37Good afternoon.
34:49Tonight we head inside Rolls-Royce, special behind-the-scenes access
34:52to find out how far they go in their quest for perfection
34:55and how the big price tag is justified.
34:57That's at nine.
34:59Next up this afternoon, it's Deal or No Deal.
