Motorway Cops Catching Britain's Speeders S01E06
Transcript
00:00It's just another shift for Cheshire Police.
00:04We've had information that that vehicle is transporting money from Manchester to Liverpool.
00:10I'm just going to buy some phones from the shop.
00:13Right. How much money is in that vehicle?
00:15It's about 20, 25 grand.
00:1825 grand and you're buying mobile phones?
00:20Yes.
00:21The motorway cops have heard it all when it comes to keeping the roads safe and crime free.
00:26Don't want to lose sight of that. It's more than the wages. I have to tax that.
00:37With deaths and serious injuries caused by accidents on our roads on the increase,
00:41it's no wonder that around a quarter of all UK vehicles now have dashcams fitted.
00:52It's just crashed. It's crashed upside down.
00:55And the great British public are capturing outrageous driving on camera.
01:03Across the country, motorway cops are relying more and more on the evidence of dashcams uploaded to them.
01:09Cops out, wall. 301 over five.
01:22In this series...
01:23You haven't got dashcams, have you?
01:25Conscious and breathing, being seen to by fire and ambulance, possible spinal injuries.
01:29Whoa, whoa, whoa.
01:30We follow them.
01:33I never saw that. Oh, my God.
01:36As they crack down on Britain's bad drivers.
01:41Tonight, a suspected hit and run leaves a motorcyclist motionless.
01:46No fractures, no open fractures.
01:48It's waiting for the ambulance because it could have a major bleed, we don't know.
01:52Officers are on the hunt...
01:53The car that hit the other cars is down there.
01:56...for a driver who's scarpered from the scene of a terrifying crash.
02:00Three passengers, one unaccounted for.
02:03And a driver's world is about to come crashing down.
02:07Being on your mobile phone will be six points and fine of £200.
02:28Just getting my taser out.
02:30Just going to give him a check, make sure that there's no damage to him.
02:37I've never actually had to use my taser and realistically, I hope I don't have to use it
02:41because, you know, it means that you're in a very dangerous situation should you have to use it.
02:48Perfect, it's all in order.
02:49Stick it in the holster and hope that it stays there.
02:55My favourite part of the job has probably got to be just the freedom.
02:59I don't feel like I'm coming into work, I just feel like I'm, you know,
03:03spending my days doing something that I love.
03:11In 2019, there were around 450 vehicle accidents every day in the UK.
03:20There's something that PC Amy Hollis sees all the time on the roads of Cheshire.
03:26You know, I go home and I've got the same life that everyone else has got.
03:29I've got a mum, a dad, I've got pets, I've got a husband.
03:32I want to know that they're all getting home safe
03:35and that there's not someone on the roads out there who's intoxicated
03:39or is on the phone or is driving in a dangerous manner
03:43which may result in them getting injured and killed.
03:56It literally just happened in front of us.
03:58I've just located the second car.
04:00There's a lot of screaming.
04:01We're going to have to get a couple of cars here, please.
04:04Tire service as well.
04:09The firearms patrol has shouted up and said they've just witnessed
04:12a road traffic collision which they suspect to be quite serious
04:17and one of the vehicles has failed to stop,
04:20but they've found it and they can hear people screaming
04:23so they think that someone's trapped inside the vehicle.
04:26Although it's been witnessed by the firearms police,
04:29as it's a collision, Amy's road traffic expertise is needed.
04:36Not sure if the injuries are serious or not.
04:44A driver fleeing the scene of a collision
04:47will make Amy's investigation more of a challenge.
04:54I'm going to close the road off and we'll see what's going on.
05:02An ambulance and the fire service have already arrived at the accident.
05:07Hiya. You all right?
05:09The car that's hit the other cars is in that hedge down there,
05:12three passengers, one unaccounted for.
05:15Are they still entrapped in that car?
05:17No, everyone's out, but just one unaccounted for.
05:23Nearly half of all traffic fatalities happen at night.
05:29Despite there being 75% fewer vehicles on the roads.
05:39At night, with clearer roads,
05:41many drivers are tempted to put their foot down.
05:44This dashcam from a Mini Cooper
05:46shows an horrific accident near Newcastle.
05:50Thankfully, no-one was seriously hurt.
05:53Moments earlier, the Mini Cooper was driving in excess of 100 mph,
05:58overtaking a silver VW, also speeding, in the inside lane.
06:04It then attempts to undertake a white Seat Ibiza ahead.
06:08All three cars, speeding way above 70 mph,
06:12didn't count on what would happen next.
06:15As the lorry ahead starts to pull out,
06:17the white Seat can't avoid a collision.
06:23The Mini Cooper smashes into the back of the HGV,
06:27followed by the silver VW, which ends up on the embankment.
06:32The Mini Cooper driver received a 12-month suspended prison sentence
06:36and a three-year ban.
06:38The other two drivers each received nine-month suspended sentences
06:42and 18-month driving bans.
06:46PC Amy Hollis is attending a collision
06:49involving a silver Peugeot and a blue Golf.
06:52There were two people in this Golf and three in this car,
06:55but its driver has absconded from the scene.
06:58Hiya, sweet, you all right?
07:00We're going to get an ambulance to come and look at you.
07:02I take it you've both come out of that car, haven't you?
07:04OK, have you given the officer the name of the driver of that car?
07:07Is he intoxicated in any way,
07:09cos I can smell some alcohol coming off of him?
07:11We are intoxicated. OK. I don't think so.
07:13Was he intoxicated? I don't think so, to my knowledge.
07:16OK. Has he taken any drugs or anything this evening?
07:18No, no. OK, that's fine.
07:20What type of injuries are we looking at in terms of your bones?
07:23Just a bit bruised. He says he thinks his legs hurt,
07:26but I think he's OK. I think I'm just bruised. I'm fine.
07:30These passengers have had a lucky escape.
07:34But it's no thanks to the driver of the car who scarpered.
07:41OK.
07:44How do you know the driver? The driver's my dad.
07:47The driver's your dad?
07:51With around 450 collisions daily,
07:56when it comes to pointing the finger of blame...
08:01..a picture never lies.
08:05Around one in four UK drivers now have a dashcam fitted in their car,
08:10exposing insane driving.
08:15Idiots behind the wheel.
08:18And unlawful behaviour.
08:30PC Amy Hollis is attending a collision involving two people
08:33in a blue Golf and three people in a silver Peugeot.
08:37But the Peugeot's driver has fled the scene.
08:42How do you know the driver?
08:44How do you know the driver? The driver's my dad.
08:47The driver's your dad?
08:55Amy Sargent is in charge of the investigation.
09:00That was the young lad and the girl and the person we're looking for.
09:07Has anyone been down?
09:09Just one of the firefighters has been down.
09:12The female is the driver's daughter, I think.
09:15So she's confirmed it was him that was driving.
09:17In this one? Yeah, yeah, I think so.
09:21The cops have called in a police helicopter and a dog
09:24to help with the search for the runaway driver.
09:35With the firearms officers seeing the accident as it unfolded,
09:39they are the ideal witnesses.
09:41It had at least three people in it and it was going pretty fast.
09:44The car's going quite quick.
09:46Spin round and have a look at it.
09:48By the time we turned round, it was red and blue down here,
09:51so we haven't even had time to put the blues on.
09:53And at which point, by the time we thought,
09:55is he making off? Yeah, yeah. Is it this car?
09:57We didn't know. We thought he'd made off down there. Yeah, yeah.
10:00It was probably about two minutes later we heard banging
10:03coming from the...
10:05But this one? Coming from the woods. Yeah.
10:09Well, I'm losing everyone. Oh. Do you not have...? OK, so...
10:13You were the driver of this vehicle, is that correct? Perfect.
10:16Can we have a quick chat over here? Is that all right?
10:18The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision
10:21has had a narrow escape.
10:23What's happened? As we were coming down here,
10:25this car that was travelling just turned.
10:28Just turned in front of me.
10:30No warning, no indication, just turned.
10:33OK. Because you've been involved in a road traffic collision,
10:36it's best if we have breath and saliva for analysis, OK?
10:39Can I have a seat in the back of my car?
10:41My car's just here. OK. You have anything to drink tonight?
10:44I haven't had a can yet. How long ago was that? Ages ago.
10:47Ages ago, OK. I'm just going to speak to my sergeant.
10:50This is my sergeant. Just take a seat in there for me, please.
10:55I've got two vehicles, but that's... Yeah.
10:58From what I've got, he's saying that the other car
11:02has just turned right in front of him,
11:04which has caused his car to spin and end up where it is.
11:07The other car's ended up in the bushes over there,
11:10but obviously he's got on his toes for some reason.
11:13So he's still standing, I think.
11:15I can smell intoxicants on him.
11:17I'm going to breath for him now.
11:19He's the driver of the VW.
11:23OK, sorry about that, love.
11:25Have you ever done a breath test procedure before?
11:28You have, so you know what it entails and everything, do you?
11:32So, big, deep breath.
11:34And blow, blow, blow, blow, blow. Perfect, stop.
11:38So that'll just analyse.
11:40Right, and that's a fail, so that's 42.
11:43The OK drink drive limit is 35.
11:45So the time is now 23.25
11:48and you are under arrest on suspicion of drink driving.
11:52Hotel Tango, 46.
11:55Tango, 46. Go ahead.
11:57Can I have a personal DL check on the driver of the VW Golf, please,
12:00who is under arrest on suspicion of drink driving?
12:04So he's under arrest at the moment for drink driving.
12:06So we're going to go to custody to do the breath test procedure.
12:13We've got a bloke that's done a runner on his daughter
12:16and her boyfriend and left them upside down in a ditch.
12:22We've got another bloke who's drink driving
12:25and we've got the helicopter and the dog out looking for the driver.
12:31The preliminary breath test at the roadside
12:34has given Amy a good indicator that the driver has been drinking.
12:38Do you agree to provide two specimens of breath for analysis?
12:41Yes. We'll take the lowest reading, OK.
12:43Once in custody, a breath test needs to be carried out
12:46by a device called an intoximeter
12:49to provide a specimen for evidence.
12:51When you're ready.
12:53The result will determine if the driver is to be charged or not.
12:57I just got you that time!
12:59So the lowest specimen's 30, so you'll be released without charge.
13:03The driver, who had a borderline positive test at the roadside,
13:07is now under the drink driving limit and will not face any charges.
13:12It's been a close call.
13:14Looking at the state of the cars and what's happened,
13:17we've come off very lightly.
13:19So food for thought, don't do it.
13:21The other driver who left the scene wasn't found on the night.
13:26He was, however, contacted by post a few days later,
13:29then interviewed and served with a notice of intended prosecution.
13:42To keep the roads safe,
13:44it's not just drivers that need to be fit to drive.
13:47Cars need to be too.
13:49In 2020, more than 300 were seized
13:53for being too dangerous to be on the road.
14:15Motorway cop PC Ian Cosgrove
14:17keeps a close eye on Cheshire's motorway network
14:20and makes sure that all vehicles adhere to the rules of the road.
14:24So a vehicle's just gone past us.
14:26Looks like it's been in an accident.
14:28The boot's all caved in.
14:30We'll have to get it off at the next junction,
14:33have a word and inspect it.
14:35We'll take him up to the top of this sleigh.
14:43Hello, sir. Are you all right?
14:45Do you know why I've stopped you?
14:47What's happened?
14:49My car hit the back of me.
14:53Where? Coventry.
14:56Right, have you got your driving licence?
14:58You haven't got it. Is it your vehicle?
15:01Courtesy. Courtesy.
15:03Where did the accident happen?
15:05It happened in London.
15:07So you had a bump in London
15:09where someone's gone into the back of you.
15:11You've driven up north to where?
15:13Liverpool. Liverpool.
15:15With it like this? No, no, it wasn't like this.
15:17It only became like this.
15:19Let me come out and talk to you.
15:21I must have tried to take this...
15:23I was trying to take this bit off
15:25because it started hanging out a bit low.
15:27When I tried to take this bit off,
15:29then this obviously came up.
15:31This was like this before.
15:33I mean, just in the time that I followed you for a junction,
15:37that was flapping like a wing, that.
15:39It's just the fact that chances are that's going to come off.
15:42I know you've put the tags on, but...
15:44Erm...
15:48I don't know.
15:50The whole thing's just going to collapse, innit?
15:52The car was involved in a bump in London.
15:54Initially, it was in a good condition to drive,
15:57the driver claims,
15:59but it has deteriorated during the journey up and down to Liverpool.
16:03That won't shut either.
16:07Right. OK.
16:09Long and short of it is,
16:11I'm going to be seizing this car
16:13for being driven in a dangerous condition.
16:16So I'm going to take it off the road.
16:18Now, I appreciate when you set off, it wasn't in that condition,
16:21but it is now.
16:23For Ian, this car poses a major concern.
16:27The issue with the stretch that we're at now
16:29is it's the four lanes running.
16:31If that falls off, then you've got people behind
16:33going 70, 80 miles per hour
16:35that are either going to go straight into it
16:37and cause damage to their own vehicles
16:39or start swerving out of the way,
16:41and then that would have been another call for us
16:43to go and retrieve that, which would have been a whole block,
16:46stopping the home mates to retrieve the bumper, basically.
16:52Can I get recovery, please, to my location?
16:55He's tied it up with ties,
16:57but he's obviously seen that it shouldn't be driven
17:00and just tried to put a bit of a plaster over it.
17:03It hasn't worked.
17:06You've obviously stopped and you've seen it.
17:08When you've got out and thought,
17:10right, I need to tie this bumper up now,
17:12that was the point where you should have thought
17:14this isn't safe to drive now.
17:16It'll be a minimum of a tour, so traffic offence report,
17:19so that's why I've called you.
17:21I'm going to fill that out now.
17:23I've asked for the recovery to come now.
17:25It'll just be a matter of time.
17:27Driving a car in this dangerous condition,
17:29there's no option but to seize it.
17:31I'll just grab the keys off you.
17:33Vehicles on our roads come in all shapes and sizes.
17:37He's put it back in, but when he was going to flap it around...
17:40I've never seen anything like that, have you?
17:43No, not that bad.
17:45Right, I'll let you crack on, then.
17:47Yeah, I'll get it for you now.
17:49So, PC Turner's come.
17:51He's come to prohibit the vehicle because of the condition,
17:54but with the driver, he'll be getting a ticket
17:57for driving a vehicle likely to cause danger.
18:06So if you don't get that letter, ring that number.
18:10Once he's got the paperwork,
18:12we don't like to keep people stranded on the side of motorways.
18:15My colleague's going to run him down to the local train station
18:18so he can carry on with his day.
18:27Vehicles on our roads come in all shapes and sizes,
18:30but of the 38.5 million licensed vehicles in Britain,
18:34under 1% of them are motorbikes.
18:37We've had a bit of rain and it's not a real proper downpour
18:42because if you get a lot of water, it cleans the roads.
18:45Because over a period of time of dryness,
18:48you get lots of deposit on the roads of oils, fuels,
18:53and a little bit of rain just brings those to the surface
18:56and can make the roads quite slippery.
18:58Like this morning, I decided to leave my motorbike at home
19:01and go in the car.
19:03If it had been a proper downpour, I'd have been quite happy to go on my bike.
19:07So now I'd have got a better grip on the road.
19:12Being a motorcyclist himself,
19:14PC Andy Doran knows first-hand the dangers of the roads.
19:18Sirius RTC coming in.
19:20It's a motorcyclist allegedly going at the back of a vehicle
19:24and then a motorcyclist is currently on the ground.
19:27Yeah, we've seen that route.
19:30There you go.
19:31What's that about motorbikes?
19:33Sirius RTC, motorbike, vehicle.
19:37Just to confirm, it would appear the motorcyclist has been run over
19:41by another vehicle who's now driven off.
19:44Confirming failed stop.
19:46It would appear so, yes.
19:51What I'm going to do is put road closure on this junction.
19:57No, no, no, no.
20:00Stay, go back.
20:1275 road closed at Dean Road Road Junction, Manchester Road.
20:17Until Andy gets to the accident and investigates what's happened,
20:21the road will remain closed.
20:23The last thing he needs is traffic going through the scene.
20:26There's no ambulance at the scene at the moment.
20:31Andy is the first emergency responder at the scene
20:34and the first impressions are not good.
20:41There are 1.25 million licensed motorcycles,
20:44scooters and mopeds in the UK.
20:47The image of having the freedom of the road may sound idyllic,
20:51but with nearly 15,000 motorbike casualties every year,
20:55motorcyclists are far more likely to suffer a fatal accident
20:59than a car driver.
21:03In Wilmslow, Cheshire, PC Andy Doran
21:06is at the scene of a serious motorbike collision.
21:11No fractures, no open fractures.
21:13We haven't removed any of the levers because that is protocol,
21:17you don't touch levers. Yeah.
21:20Has he been unconscious at all?
21:22No. OK.
21:26Were you behind him?
21:28We've got the information the vehicle's failed stop.
21:31All right, well, then it is failed stop, isn't it?
21:34How are you doing, mate?
21:36As you've come off your bike,
21:38you've been clipped by another vehicle, we're being told.
21:41Do you recall that?
21:44You didn't know how it happened, did you?
21:48So you're just coming down the road and you don't remember anything?
21:53Anything different, let me know. I'm just going to my car.
21:56Just so you're updated, we do have a doctor on scene
21:58who is a member of the public and a nurse who are here.
22:01He is conscious, breathing, there's no obvious injury to the head,
22:04so at this moment in time, until paramedics arrive,
22:06we'll leave him in the same position.
22:08Waiting for the ambulance to check on the condition
22:11of the motorcyclist, because even though we have a doctor here,
22:14who's passed by, and a nurse,
22:16we don't want to disrupt anything internally
22:19once the leathers start getting cut off,
22:21because it could be a fracture that's been held together
22:24by leathers and clothing.
22:26We don't want to disturb those,
22:28because, you know, we could have a major bleed, we don't know.
22:36In the UK, police forces face a daily battle
22:39to stop dangerous drivers.
22:42And dashcams are aiding them.
22:49With hundreds of videos submitted to UK police forces every week,
22:53around a quarter of them result in fines,
22:56a court summons or a warning.
22:59Helping to deter reckless driving on our roads.
23:04What the...
23:10Earlier, PC Andy Doran responded to a call
23:13about a motorbike collision in Wilmslow in Cheshire.
23:16His foot looks a little bit disformed.
23:19The motorcyclist was thought to be the victim of a possible hit-and-run.
23:24You've been clipped by another vehicle, we're being told.
23:27Do you recall that? No idea, mate.
23:30With the ambulance on its way
23:32and the motorcyclist in a stable condition,
23:34Andy turns his attention to investigating the cause of the collision.
23:38Have you talked about the slippy road?
23:40Can you feel it under your...?
23:42Did you witness anything, Tulsa?
23:45So you were travelling directly behind this bike?
23:50Behind that car?
23:55Yeah.
23:59OK. Was it while he was in the air or once he was on the floor?
24:03Can I just sign there, mate?
24:08So you've stopped because of that part there.
24:10Did you see him coming behind you?
24:12Did you think the speed was too great for you stopping?
24:14Yeah, I think he wasn't paying attention, he didn't see me stop.
24:18Right, OK.
24:19It appears that as the VW Golf pulled in
24:22to make way for traffic coming in the opposite direction,
24:25the motorbike went into the back of it.
24:30Following the eyewitness accounts, Andy needs to investigate further.
24:34Has he got any dashcam on that?
24:36That's it there, so is it there?
24:39No dashcam, no dashcam.
24:43Has he tried to brake beforehand?
24:47Sometimes when you stand back and you look at the road,
24:50the road's wet, if he's applied the brake,
24:52the heat generation of the tyre will create a dry patch.
24:56At this moment in time, I can't see any dry patch,
24:58which would indicate he hasn't applied the back brake.
25:01Look at the tyre, there's no obvious skid mark on there,
25:05so I think the bike's gone straight down,
25:07which is why you can see the scraping on the tarmac.
25:11It's gone down there, it's gone down.
25:14I'm happy with that.
25:16But there's also the matter of the suspected hit-and-run.
25:20There is some confusion.
25:21A witness says from behind, says there's a car's come up,
25:24that's hit him while he's been on the road.
25:27But then, obviously, your injuries will be able to tell us that.
25:30Yeah, that doesn't seem to be the case from what we can see.
25:32Yeah, it's no injuries at all.
25:34No injuries?
25:35Other than a bruised finger and a bruised lip.
25:38No injuries.
25:39Oh, right.
25:40So he's not had any major impact.
25:42OK, that's brilliant, then.
25:43Yeah.
25:47I'm happy that no vehicle coming the other direction has hit him.
25:50There is no injuries.
25:51You know, he's just overreacted to the vehicle braking in front,
25:54and he's come off at the ground, and he's been very lucky.
25:59Hey-up, Ken.
26:00How are you doing?
26:01How are we doing, pal?
26:02Every time I'm on shift, I seem to meet you.
26:05Stand it up.
26:08There you go.
26:10Could be worse, yeah, it could be my bike.
26:13There you go, we'll even repair it.
26:17There we go.
26:18There you go, done.
26:19Morning, mate.
26:28At the heart of the north-west motorway network
26:31lies the Thelwall Viaduct.
26:33Towering 28 metres high above the River Mersey
26:36and the Manchester Ship Canal,
26:38its two bridges are not for the faint-hearted.
26:44Yeah, this is not very nice to be driving in.
26:47This is where you have to be careful,
26:50because people still drive like idiots in here.
26:54Around 170,000 vehicles cross its eight lanes daily,
26:59and in bad weather, it's even more daunting.
27:06Right.
27:11Right, we're going to speak to this gentleman while he stops.
27:15Spray's that bad, you can't see anything.
27:17Still have a chat with him. Out the car already.
27:25Have you got a recovery coming to you?
27:29Yeah, give him a call.
27:30MH Mike Oscar 14.
27:32Can I give you details of a breakdown, please?
27:34M6, southbound, on Thelwall, 301 over five.
27:41Roger.
27:42Is there anybody with him?
27:44Yes, yes, I'm with him now.
27:46He's got a foot near side flat tyre.
27:49He's on the phone to recovery now.
27:51This driver has broken down on one of the most perilous spots
27:55on the northern stretch of the M6.
27:58And being so exposed to the elements
28:00makes it even more dangerous.
28:0310% of all accidents are thought to happen during heavy downpours.
28:09Bad weather means slippery roads.
28:12Combined with torrential rain and reduced visibility,
28:16driving at speed is a recipe for disaster.
28:23On the M61 in Lancashire,
28:25this highway's traffic officer attending an accident has a close call.
28:30He leaps over the barrier to avoid a red Nissan Micra
28:33that's lost control in heavy rain.
28:35It skids backwards across the carriageway,
28:38hitting the central reservation,
28:40before ploughing into the stationary patrol vehicle.
28:54PC Ian Cosgrove has come across a driver
28:57stranded on the Thelwall viaduct on the M6 near Manchester.
29:01I'll let highways know where you are.
29:03Just carry on with your recovery.
29:05We know where you are, we've got CCTV.
29:07The only thing I'll say, I know it's horrible,
29:09but the safest place for you is to be out of the car,
29:12standing to the near side.
29:14But that's just advice, OK?
29:16And I'll leave it with you.
29:22Is he arranging his own recovery?
29:24Yes, yes, he's doing it now.
29:27And just while I've got you, the spray around Thelwall,
29:31it's reducing visibility quite a bit.
29:33If we could just set something on the main bridge.
29:36Switching on the overhead motorway signs
29:38to alert drivers to reduce their speed
29:41could prevent vehicles from skidding in the wet conditions
29:44and prevent serious accidents.
29:50It's the spray.
29:52When it's raining a little bit, you just get soaked.
29:55So I've never been so dirty until I've started working on the motorway.
30:01Where we are now is one of the most dangerous places that we cover.
30:05You've got four lanes of traffic and we're really high up
30:08and it gets really windy here.
30:10You don't want to be stopping on here for too long if you don't have to.
30:16The stranded driver was eventually rescued by a recovery truck.
30:25For Ian, pulling onto the hard shoulder was the easy part.
30:30We're going to be here a while.
30:36The issue is, we've got...
30:38There are gaps that we could probably get out in,
30:41but you don't want to be the root cause of another accident.
30:49There we go. We're out.
31:00North of Crewe, in Cheshire, PC Dave Reid is on routine patrol.
31:05I just want to talk to you about being on your phone.
31:08Having been in the force for eight years,
31:10he's heard a load of excuses for breaking the rules of the road.
31:14You've been a banana, haven't you?
31:16It could have been, I know, I know.
31:18Since 2021, the law has got tougher
31:21when it comes to the use of mobile phones whilst driving.
31:24Every day, 35 drivers are caught using their phones.
31:28It's on the phone.
31:33There we go. I'll pull in front of her and...
31:37She's still talking on it.
31:41We are obsessed with our phones.
31:44They're at our sides 24-7.
31:46No matter what the situation,
31:48many of us just can't seem to put them down.
31:51Yeah, still on it, looking at him.
31:53He's just seen me and he's just put the phone down now.
31:56Using covert vehicles, UK police forces run year-round operations...
32:01He's got TV on or he's got something on his screen.
32:04..to crack down on drivers at the wheel using their mobiles.
32:08He's on WhatsApp.
32:11..catching them in the act.
32:13He's on the phone, yeah. It's in the...
32:15Oh, here he comes.
32:19Mate, he's on the phone. He's almost clipped us.
32:22Very nearly took us out.
32:26This driver in Warwickshire...
32:28And he's on his phone. And no seatbelt.
32:30..is more focused on his phone than his driving.
32:33Still no reaction to you from behind him.
32:35He's still got no lighting for you now.
32:37He's completely oblivious to the police lights and sirens.
32:43Still no reaction.
32:45Eventually, it took two police cars to stop him.
32:49On the M6, just south of Manchester Airport,
32:52PC Dave Reed has clocked a motorist using her mobile.
32:57It annoys me. It really annoys me just to sit there like that
33:00and have it on loudspeaker and talk.
33:03She'll get a ticket for being on her mobile phone,
33:06which is a £200 fine of six points on a licence.
33:09It would mean that I'd end up taking her over to 12 points or more.
33:13I'll end up having to just sit there and talk.
33:17I'll end up having to just send her to court instead
33:19and summons her to court for the offence.
33:22Well, she can follow me off into the services now.
33:25Dave has put on his follow-me sign
33:27to guide the driver into the nearby services.
33:30Take him to here.
33:38Hello.
33:40Cheers. Are you happy sitting in my car?
33:43Well, bear with me.
33:47Right. Let's check the details, then.
33:52Being on your mobile phone would be six points.
33:54Oh, God. And a fine of £200.
33:56Might lose my job.
33:58But we'll check how many points you've got already on your licence.
34:02I've never been so stupid.
34:05You say you're a wreck.
34:07You say you travel the country up and down for sales.
34:11And I've always got my Bluetooth on in my car.
34:14I know.
34:16What we'll do as well, prior to you leaving,
34:19we'll set up Bluetooth for you as well, so it's all set up.
34:22But, yeah, let's have a look.
34:26Go ahead.
34:29Oh, God.
34:38Roger. Many thanks.
34:40Already having six points, the additional ones for this offence
34:44will bring her to the maximum of 12 points,
34:47meaning she could be banned from driving for a minimum of six months.
34:51I've got to still deal with the offence,
34:53but I can't give you a ticket, then.
34:56I'm going to have to summon you to court, unfortunately.
34:59Because if I do it now, that takes you to 12 points, doesn't it?
35:03Can I still lose my licence, then?
35:06There's always a possibility of losing your licence if you get 12 points.
35:11I don't want to give you false hope, but for someone like yourself,
35:15obviously a decent, hard-working person...
35:18I've never broken the law in my life!
35:20No, no, I know. You're not known to police for anything at all.
35:23My fingers will be crossed for you that the courts will be lenient,
35:26because you need your licence for your job,
35:28otherwise you lose your job, you lose everything else, don't you?
35:31And it could be that they just give you the points,
35:33but you keep your licence, but you have to pay a fine still.
35:36I don't care about the money! I know, I know, I know.
35:39As long as you keep your licence, you're not a bad person.
35:42You've just been on your phone, doing your job.
35:44You haven't answered him! I know, I know, I know.
35:48We'll sort it out, we'll sort out your Bluetooth for you before you go.
35:53I'll come with you.
35:55Yeah, I know, stop all the baddies running away, you see!
35:59Right, I'll let you out.
36:01Can I sit in this seat, then, if you jump in your driver's seat?
36:04Right, so, settings. That's the one there.
36:08So, your phone's set up now, on the car.
36:12But honest to God, try not to worry too much about it.
36:16I really, really strongly suggest you have a cup of tea here at the services
36:20before you go anywhere else.
36:22Promise you'll be all right. Thank you.
36:24I'll leave you be. No, don't worry about it.
36:27All right, take care.
36:30Bless her.
36:32Oh, God, if you're sorry for her.
36:34You do get a handful of people that really, it hits them hard
36:39and they just really get really upset about it.
36:42Not just women, but men.
36:44She's been a part of the job, trying to deal with someone who's actually a decent person.
36:48You know, all she's doing, she's out working hard, doing her job,
36:53and she's just been a little bit daft.
37:06There it is. Bit of debris.
37:09Looks like somebody's lost their worldly goods.
37:22Yeah, it was a toaster.
37:30Having dealt with the toaster on the carriageway,
37:33Andy's getting news of a more businesslike solution.
37:36Andy's getting news of a more burning issue.
37:39A collision between two cars, with possible injuries.
37:50The accident is on the outskirts of Crewe, near Nantwich.
38:07Obviously not being there and seeing the damage,
38:10but if the airbags had gone off,
38:12it has, like, gas and air and makes a mist in the car,
38:16so she's got out of that.
38:18You know, some kind person has said,
38:20oh, come and sit in my car, which she has done,
38:23and now she's worried that she can't move.
38:31Road's closed already.
38:3330 minutes later, Andy's arrived at the scene...
38:36Here we are.
38:37..where the work of the other emergency services is well under way.
38:43Hi there, guys, you all right?
38:45What's the score?
38:47It's a rear-end shunt.
38:49Yeah, was it the airbags had gone off and just all smoke?
38:52That's why she got out? Yeah.
38:54She's got out of that vehicle, and for safety, he's very kindly said,
38:58sit in our car, because of that.
39:00So they're cutting this roof off this car?
39:02Yeah. Oh, dear.
39:04The owner of the gold car the woman ran into
39:07kindly offered her a seat in his car,
39:09but paramedics are now worried she has a possible spinal injury
39:13and to remove her, have only one option.
39:15Oh, is it a brand-new car?
39:1721-plate.
39:19Oh, dear.
39:20Not good news for the car's owner.
39:23The motorway car's owner, Andy,
39:25says he's got a problem with the airbags.
39:29The motorway cops are back new next Monday at eight.
39:32Experience real crime in real time
39:35as we spend 60 minutes on shift with police hour of duty
39:39starting new Wednesday at nine.
39:41And tonight, chest pains have put the holiday plans on hold
39:44for one worried patient in new casualty 24-7 every second counts.
39:52Targeting the behaviour that plays a part in vehicle smashes
39:57F*** me!
39:59causing chaos on the roads.
40:04Watch, watch, he's being really aggressive now.
40:11Near Nantwich, just outside Crewe,
40:14PC Andy Dolan is attending an unusual accident.
40:18She's got out of that vehicle,
40:20and for safety, he's very kindly said,
40:22sit in our car.
40:24So they're cutting this roof off this car?
40:26Yeah.
40:27Oh, dear.
40:30Not only is the roof being removed,
40:32but it's coming off the stationary car the woman drove into.
40:37Yeah, I was just sat in traffic,
40:40vehicle started moving again,
40:42I went to take my handbrake off
40:44and I just felt impact from the back.
40:46Lady was in a bit of shock,
40:49so I sat her down in my car
40:51and so now I've got to take the roof off.
40:54What's more, the car is only three months old.
40:58Only been 2,000 miles for me,
41:00but no, the most important thing is that the lady's found,
41:04so it's the right thing to do.
41:07It's painful to watch, though.
41:10The good Samaritan is taking his car being refashioned
41:13into a convertible rather well,
41:16all things being considered.
41:22Board down the back.
41:25And then get her up the board, drop the seat, yeah?
41:28No update on any injuries as yet,
41:30but, you know, I'll give you a shout as soon as we know.
41:36There's not a great deal for us at the moment.
41:38We'll leave the paramedics and the fire
41:40in assisting getting the injured person from this vehicle.
41:45And once she's in the ambulance and properly assessed,
41:48then we'll have a word with the paramedics
41:50and just see where we're up to in relation to her injuries.
41:59Do we know any extent of any injuries as yet?
42:01Not wearing a seatbelt.
42:03Unknown speed. She can't recall the event.
42:06OK, no worries, I'll just update my supervisor.
42:09Brilliant, cheers, thanks.
42:12I know it sounds a bit petty, but that was, like...
42:15That was, like, 70 quid.
42:18Anything you want out of it, take.
42:20Cos you won't see it again?
42:22If you like the floor mats, you can have them.
42:24All right, OK, yeah, then. Oh, yeah, take anything.
42:29Where's your dangling dice?
42:31I've had many of these. Say again?
42:33There's not many of them, it's a limited edition.
42:35This is? Yeah.
42:37It's even more limited now.
42:39There's only four in the 70 plates that I'm holding.
42:41Wow.
42:45There you go.
42:46Looks like some out of James Bond there, doesn't it?
42:49Just clear the road now and we'll be on our way.
42:52Hey, it took four fire officers to do this.
42:55Don't scratch paintwork.
43:00Don't scratch the paintwork.
43:02All looking good. All cleared away now.
43:06Thankfully, the Good Samaritan's customised car
43:09has now been replaced with a brand-new one.
43:12Happy days.
43:14Cheers, Paul. See you later.
43:18A bit excessive with the old, er,
43:20likes to rip it to shreds type of thing.
43:22A braver man than I, that, was cutting my car down.
43:25I'm not going to do it again.
43:27A bit excessive with the old, er,
43:29likes to rip it to shreds type of thing.
43:31A braver man than I, that, was cutting my car down.
43:34I think I would have, er, not been as relaxed, let's say that.
43:42If you have any dashcam clips you think could feature
43:45in the next series of Motorway Cops,
43:47Catching Britain's Speeders,
43:49send them, along with your contact details,
43:52or contact us at...
